Strengths:
Young is a very expolsive athlete. He has the ability to play above the rim. James has a strong body that allows him to shred the defense and get to the rim. He is strong right handed on his drive. He is a streaky shooter with range to 20 feet. Young is an able rebounder with his strong body and athletic ability. He has the ability to take over games offensively and has a solid skill package.
Weaknesses:
James needs to be more consistent with his effort. He has the ability to dominate games in his age group at will but often is too passive. He needs to continue to improve his skills. Right now his strength and athletic ability are generally too much for his opponent but that can change as players get older, bigger and stronger. Young has the physical ability to be a top 20 player in his class.
Bottom Line:
James Young is one of the better physical prospects in the class. He has high level athletic ability and solid skill. As he continues to mature and improve the sky is the limit for his potential.

Talented 2013 Trio Discuss Recruitment
by Alex Schwartz
James Young, Moses Kingsley and Jordan Bell are already fairly well-known despite having yet to even begin their junior years of high school. Young was ranked #43 in the Northstar Basketball Pre-July 2013 Top 50, while Kinglsey was at the prestigious LeBron James Skills Academy and Bell is regarded as one of the top rising juniors in California.
All three players were were in North Augusta, S.C. for the Nike Peach Jam/EYBL Finals. Young was there were The Family's U16 squad, while Kingsley was with the U17 Arkansas Wings and Jordan Bell ran with the California Supreme U16 team.
James Young, a 6'5 small forward out of Troy (MI), told Northstar Basketball that he is hearing from Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, Louisville, and Georgia Tech. Surprisingly, Young said he did not think he had any scholarship offers.
"I like Kentucky a lot and Michigan State and Ohio State," said Young, who has yet to take any unofficial visits.
"Yeah, hopefully Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State . . . and Louisville," Young said of who he would like to visit. He has yet to schedule any trips, though.
On who is recruiting him the hardest, Young remarked, "Michigan State is showing me a lot of love and Ohio State called me a couple times."
Young, who said location will "not at all" be a factor in a decision, noted that he grew up rooting for Michigan State and Kentucky.
If both MSU and UK were to offer, how tough of a decision would that be for him? "Yeah, it would be really tough," Young said. "Yeah, I don't know, that would be real tough."
