'13 FL WR Tony Stevens (Texas A&M Decommit; Auburn Verbal)

OSU offers ESPN 300 WR Tony Stevens
August, 1, 2012
By Brad Bournival | ESPN.com

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer loves speed on the edge and he dipped into the state where he became a legend Wednesday with an offer to Florida State commit Tony Stevens (Orlando, Fla./Evans).

Ranked No. 173 in the ESPN 300, Stevens said he is still committed to the Seminoles, but was taken aback by the offer from the Buckeyes.

?It means a lot,? Stevens said. ?Coach Meyer is a pretty good coach. I loved what he did with Florida when he was down here.

So, uh, is ESPN trying to make it seem like Ohio State is "poaching" a committed player by pretending like they just offered- or are they just incompetent and don't know that Ohio State offered back in February?

247 $ Tony Stevens excited for FSU jr day

2/20

By Josh Newberg...Excited by his recent OSU offer

I assume contact was re-initiated after Stevens opened up his recruitment and they re-affirmed the initial offer which is the source of his excitement and the potential cause for confusion.

Either way, throw Stevens in with Gibson, Allen, Foster, Quick and Whitfield as candidates for one of the remaining WR spots in the class.

It's possible that he received a written offer today.

Oh yeah, that too. Perhaps I am being oversensitive.

I wonder if committing to a school to hold a spot while you wait for written offers is going to become a trend.

FSU WR commit Stevens to take visits
August, 26, 2012
By Derek Tyson | ESPN.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Four-star Florida State wide receiver commit Tony Stevens and his Orlando Evans teammates lost a disappointing preseason game to Jacksonville Sandalwood 29-27 on Friday night, but the talented 6-foot-4, 184-pound receiver accounted for three receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns in only one half of action.

Stevens, whose two touchdowns went for 30 and 13 yards, said after the game that he is planning to take all five of his official visits in the fall.

"I'm going to take all of my visits because it's my senior year," Stevens said. "I know I'm going to visit Ohio State, FSU, Louisville, South Carolina and USF ... but I'm still solid to Florida State."

I really like this kids film. Lots of talk on here about James Quick, but Tony is right with him in my book. I'm trying not to get ahead of myself but seeing a class finish with Gibson and another elite WR doesn't seem too far fetched. I'd love it to be a Gibson/Stevens finish.

Evans coach Chip Gierke says status of Tony Stevens' FSU commitment 'tabled,' for now

Evans football coach Chip Gierke was greeted this morning when he started work with a phone call from Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett, the recruiter for the Seminoles in the Orlando area.

Reports surfaced late Wednesday night that top receiver Tony Evans had decommitted from his commitment to the Seminoles, and Trickett wondered what was up, having yet to discuss the situation with Stevens. Coaches are currently not allowed personal calls to potential recruits, but they can call their high school coaches and players can call them.

"Coach Trickett called me and that was the first that I had heard of it," said Gierke, who then caught up to Stevens to discuss the situation."Tony told me that he wanted to take his other visits and I asked him if that's what he thought decommitting means, and he said, 'Yes.'

"We're a day away from a very important district football game tomorrow night and so I asked Tony if he could table it and we would discuss it with his mother this weekend."

Gierke said he was not sure how solid FSU's scholarship offer was to Stevens at this time. Stevens committed to the Seminoles on Feb. 25, along with teammate LB Ro'Derrick Hoskins, during an FSU junior-day event.

Another teammate, WR Dominic Walker, decommitted from his pledge to Vanderbilt earlier this week after taking a trip to Nebraska.

Evans faces Class 7A, District 4 foe East Ridge on the road Friday night. The Trojans played East Ridge twice at home last year, routing the Knights in the regular-season district game, but then East Ridge came back to eliminate Evans in the state playoffs region semifinal.

Stevens told ESPN's Corey Dowlar on Wednesday night that he had decommitted FSU and, "I'm going to take all of my visits because it's my senior year. I know I'm going to visit Ohio State, FSU, Louisville, South Carolina and USF ... but I'm still solid to Florida State."

Gierke and Stevens are hoping to sort everything out this weekend. Gierked is a veteran of more than 30 years in the coaching ranks and has always had good relationships with college coaches, including Trickett.

"I don't tell these kids they should go to Florida State or any other school," Gierke said. "But I do think that when a person gives his word he needs to stand by it. These guys need to make sure they know what they're doing before they start talking about things like decommitting."
