(12) OHIO ST 79, (16) MICHIGAN ST 68
EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Terence Dials' ability to outplay Paul Davis allowed Ohio State to return a favor.
Dials played through some foul trouble to score 19 points and grab 10 rebounds as the 12th-ranked Buckeyes ended No. 16 Michigan State's 15-game winning streak at home with a critical 79-68 Big Ten Conference victory.
With the win, Ohio State (20-4, 9-4 Big Ten) avenged its only home loss of the season, a double-overtime setback to Michigan State on January 15. More importantly, the Buckeyes moved into a first-place tie with Iowa atop the league standings.
Dials was a force inside for much of the contest, making his first six shots en route to a 9-of-11 showing. After his first miss, he had back-to-back layups to pull Ohio State within 47-46 with 14:49 left and forged the first tie of the second half at 54-54 with a jumper at the 11:09 mark.
Je'Kel Foster followed with a 3-pointer to give the Buckeyes their first lead of the stanza and added another with 7:47 left to make it 63-58. Shannon Brown buried a shot from the arc to cut Michigan State's deficit to 67-66 with 3:50 left, but Jamar Butler needed just 14 seconds to answer from long range for Ohio State.
Butler's 3-pointer was part of the Buckeyes' 11-of-24 (46 percent) effort from the arc and started a 10-0 run that carried into the final minute of play. Twice during the surge, Ohio State missed a shot from outside but was able to corral the offensive rebound and burn more time off the clock.
The Spartans held a 22-15 rebounding advantage at halftime but finished with a 33-32 deficit on the boards. Davis, who scored 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting, had just five rebounds, nearly five below his average.
Dials won the matchup with his counterpart underneath and recorded his fourth straight double-double, making him the first Buckeye to accomplish the feat since Brad Sellers in 1985-86.
Foster had 17 points, Ron Lewis added 13 and Butler chipped in 12 and seven assists for Ohio State, which won for just the 14th time in 52 games here.
Maurice Ager paced the hosts with 26 points, scoring 16 in the first half when Michigan State claimed a 37-34 lead.
