His 40 was a 4.81 today at the Nike Sparq combine in cleveland one of the espn analyst told me that. He scratched it

Hopefully this rumor scares off a bit of the competition. Neither Micheal Irvin nor Anquan Bolden ever ran under 4.65 at the peak of their athletic prowess. Their careers turned out okay.

I have always thought these 40 times in high school are a bunch of hogwash. You see almost every reciever and DB running a 4.4 or better these days. Then they get to the NFL combine four years later, after working with a speed coach, and run 4.55 or 4.6. I'd be willing to bet, when a kid has 4.35-4.4 beside his name, nine times out of ten 4.5-4.6 is more accurate.

Also think of the difference between a 4.8 and a 4.6. Even between a 4.4 and a 4.8. It's a half step or a step. In a foot race to the end zone it makes a difference over a hundred yards. But in these combines, if the kid gets a bad start or has an awkward step, his time is going to drop .2 or .4 seconds. In high school I ran a 4.9 and then five minutes later got a better start and then had a much smoother run and ran a 4.6. It only takes one slightly bad step to throw off your technique and drop "quite a bit" of time in a straight, forty yard run. I'm betting he's more of a 4.6 guy. Maybe even lower on a good day. Either way, though, his film shows a playmaker, and I'll take that over a track star nine times out of ten.

he first three steps of a 40 yard dash are the most important part. Usually a guy only gets 18 steps in the race, and the first three steps are the difference between 4.8 and 4.5. If a WR runs great routes and creates separation using his body and hands, he can make up for those first three steps. A big guy like Stanford especially can make up for a slower first steps because he is going to be so strong up top and harder to jam. If he knows how to cut DBs off he will get deep routes too. I think it's a stat that is worth paying attention to for a guy with just an ok work ethic. For Stanford, who sounds like he is a good kid, it will be overcome with hard work and patience.
