Sam Webb: What about Centerville, Ohio, linebacker Ifeadi Odenigbo? Ohio State was arguably the team to beat for him. He is goods friends with incoming Buckeye freshman lineman Mike Bennett and Ohio State is probably the school that he is the most familiar with. I know Notre Dame and Stanford are particularly strong, as well. But might there now be a real opportunity for Michigan State to make a move up his list ? especially when you also take into account that they recently picked up a commitment from his teammate, lineman Benny McGowan?
Dave Berk: I think it does improve it. I know from our talking to him, academics are going to play a very key role. Also, comfort level will be key. I think that is where Michigan State might have a slight advantage. The fact that Benny McGowan decided to give his pledge to Michigan State back at the spring game is definitely significant. I know Michigan State is doing a good job of trying to build a relationship with him without going too fast, but right now I really think the schools that have maybe the best chance to get him will be (renowned) on the academic side, like Stanford, maybe Cal and Notre Dame.
Allen Trieu: I think there always was kind of opening simply because he is a kid who has never really followed college football. It has always been more about the school and the academics. He came into this with a blank slate. It is hard to judge how much of this Tressel stuff now is going to affect him because I do not get the impression that it is something he has really followed. It is something schools try to use against Ohio State in recruiting a kid like him, but he is such a unique kid in that he didn't grow up following college football. That said, Michigan State has a chance there. McGowan's presence is big because things like that are important to him. It is not about football tradition. Having a familiar presence like Benny there in addition to what the school can offer academically are going to be the factors for Ifeadi.
