Adonis Thomas, who was a key player on a USA squad that won the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina last summer, will travel to Germany this summer to battle for the FIBA U17 World Championship.
Already a nationally recognized basketball commodity, Melrose senior forward Adonis Thomas will take his game to the world stage for the second straight summer next week in Germany as part of the 2010 USA Under-17 World Championship Team.
The 6-6, 205-pound Thomas was one of 12 prep standouts selected Monday for the USA U17 Team, which will compete July 2-11 in Hamburg, Germany, in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship for Men.
"It's great, just knowing that I was going to be able to come back out and hopefully try to do the same thing we did last year, which was get a gold medal," said Thomas, one of 19 high school stars invited to San Antonio last weekend to try out for the team.
Last June, Thomas, rated a five-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com, averaged 13.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists over five games to help the USA U16 Team capture gold in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina.
Thomas led the U16 team in scoring in two of his five starts. He grabbed 10 rebounds and had a team-high three assists in the USA's 101-87 gold-medal victory over tournament-host Argentina.
Nine of the 12 players named Monday to the U17 Team played on last year's U16 Team.
"Basically I knew who was going to get picked (beforehand)," said Thomas, who has yet to narrow a college list that includes Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio State, Tennessee and Memphis.
"I'm going to try to do the same thing (as last year) -- bring the same type of defense and play the same way (offensively)."
The U17 Team will continue training in San Antonio this week before departing Friday for Lithuania, where it will play exhibition games against Russia's U18 Team and Lithuania's U17 Team.
The USA U17 Team opens tournament play in Hamburg next Friday against Argentina in a rematch of last year's U16 gold-medal contest. The gold and bronze medal games are slated for July 11.

HAMBURG, Germany -- Adonis Thomas arrived in Hamburg at the beginning of July on a mission -- to become a world champion.
And the Melrose High star achieved his goal by helping the United States to the gold medal at the 2010 FIBA Under-17 World Championship with a convincing 111-80 victory over Poland in Sunday's final.
Thomas collected eight points, eight rebounds and three steals as Team USA won its eighth straight game at the inaugural event.
"I feel honored to have a world gold medal around my neck. It's a great feeling," said the freshly crowned world champion.
And the Americans showed their class by beating their opponents by an average margin of 33.6 points.
"Coming here we didn't think we'd beat all the teams by a big margin. But we played hard in all the games, and that's what we wanted to do," said Thomas, who shot 4-of-12 from the field in the final against the previously undefeated Poles.
"We wanted to send out a statement to the world that the USA has a lot of good young players that some day will be great players."
Thomas, who averaged 8.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals for the tournament, went scoreless in the first quarter on Sunday.
Like he always does, Adonis Thomas used his strength and athleticism to make a lot happen on the glass and in transition. The 6-foot-6 wing has really be under-rated as a passer and sees the floor very well. He listed Memphis, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, UCLA and Oklahoma and says he'll chop it down to five sometime in the next month or so.
The 6-foot-6 Thomas confirmed after the game that his interest level from Kentucky had picked up. His list includes Memphis, Florida, Tennessee, UCLA, Ohio State, Mississippoi, Arkansas, Duke and North Carolina. Only Duke and UNC have not offered.
Memphis star gets a call from Cal
One of the big standouts this week at the two AAU basketball events in Sin City has been Memphis Melrose wing Adonis Thomas.
A big-time athlete, the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Thomas has a lot of major colleges - including the University of Kentucky - tracking his progress with the Memphis Magic.
UK coach John Calipari and assistant Orlando Antigua have been watching Thomas, along with coaches from North Carolina, Memphis, Tennessee, Ohio State, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, UCLA and Duke. Calipari recently made a call on Thomas.
"I'm still wide open but I want to start narrowing it down soon," Thomas said. "There are still a lot of schools calling and showing interest. I'm just trying to focus on winning now."
Thomas said he has a relationship with Calipari from his days in Memphis and noted his father "has always been a fan of his and I love his style. He puts players in the league."
But while he had been staying in touch with Antigua, Thomas said the interest from Calipari started to get stronger after his showing with the USA Basketball team that won the gold medal in Germany last month.
"He talked to my high school head coach and told him that he saw something in me," Thomas said. "I am trying to get them right back in there."
Standout players
Adonis Thomas (Memphis, Tenn./Melrose)
2011 (6-foot-6, 210 pounds) | AAU Team: Memphis Magic Elite
Thomas, who seems to be a bigger version of NBA standout Jason Richardson, may be the most explosive athlete in the country. His overall game is rough around the edges, but in the open court he is a handful to shut down. He can rebound in traffic and lead the fast break, and his explosiveness to the rim is peerless. His handle is solid. and he has a fairly tight crossover to separate from defenders. His jump shot is playable. and he gets great elevation, but his shot selection needs refining. Far too often he takes bad shots and forces his way to the basket when the paint area is flooded with defenders. Once Thomas slows down and allows the game to come to him, his upside will be very promising.
Adonis Thomas (Memphis, Tenn./Melrose), a 6-6 senior, continued his dominating summer as he turned in three terrific performances at this event. His offensive game needs refining, but he is a menace to stop in transition, and he even knocked in a fair share of 3-pointers.
Adonis Thomas, 6-6 small forward, Memphis. Thomas entered the summer ranked No. 10 by Scout.com, but college coaches were raving that his outrageous athleticism and uncommon humility eventually could separate him from others in the 2010 class. Memphis would like to keep him home; a legion of others want to prevent that.
"I know what I have to do when I get in the gym: Constantly work on my outside shot," Thomas said. "Sometimes I shoot it one way and it's a good shot, sometimes I shoot it a different way and it's not. I've got to get more accurate."
Most Memphis kids stay home, but been told Ohio St. & Florida strong. RT @madison1329: @goodmanonfox where do u think Adonis Thomas ends up?
Thomas moves to the head of the Class of 2011

The basketball recruiting class of 2011 lacks the sort of big men and big scorers necessary to make it truly exceptional.
If it is to produce any players who can have the sort of transformative effect on a team that we saw in recent years from Chris Paul or Kevin Durant or John Wall, some players must ? either suddenly or gradually -- turn breathtaking potential into extraordinary production.
That?s why Sporting News? list of the top 10 recruits the 2011 class might look different than some others. Because the best of this group almost certainly is yet to come:
1. Adonis Thomas, 6-5 SF, Melrose (Memphis). No player in the class has as much potential to impact the game in the long term as Thomas, who possesses the kind of size and athleticism at his position that evokes such stars as Vince Carter, Grant Hill and, dare we say, Michael Jordan
Thomas is not as highly rated by others because he has not been statistically overwhelming at the high school level. His high school team, his AAU team and the U.S. junior national team all won major championships with Thomas willing to fill whatever role was necessary. Eventually, he will embrace that it means him becoming a superstar.
He made a step in that direction with the Memphis Magic squad this summer, frequently dominating at the Super 64.
?It was a whole new team with only one returning guy, so I had to lead,? Thomas said. ?I know I?ll still have to gain some more weight, work on my outside shot ... I?ve got to get more accurate.?
Dime: You?ve travelled a lot this summer and you?ve seen some of the top talent in the nation. Who would you say are has had their stock rise the most this summer?
ED: Antwan Space out of Texas has really helped his stock. He is a guy that was unknown to many college coaches and now he is being recruited by a number of high-major colleges. He is at least a top 75 player. Dominique Pointer is a riser who plays for the AAU team called The Family. He?s a 6-5 athletic wing who is a really good defender. Similar to Space, he has a lot of high-majors jump in the picture. The third guy would have to be Adonis Thomas, despite the fact that he?s already a top 10 guy. You can tell that he has improved a number of aspects of his game. I think that he is going to be a very good college player and a future pro.
Tigers' top target, Thomas, to cut school list this weekend
By Jason Smith on August 27, 2010
Melrose senior forward Adonis Thomas, the Sporting News' No. 1-ranked player in the Class of 2011, is slated to participate in tonight's Boost Mobile Elite 24 dunk contest from Venice Beach, Calif., at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
Thomas told me this week he plans to cut his school list to five during the dunk contest if ESPNU can make room for him to do it . If not, he's hoping to do it during Saturday's Boost Mobile game, which is also to be televised by ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
