2010 Dave Wannstedt Team Passing Camp Notebook: Update on Mike Caputo's recruiting process

As I was watching North Allegheny and West Allegheny go at it during the 2010 Dave Wannstedt Team Passing Camp Sunday afternoon, I got engaged in conversation with Mike Caputo?s father, Rich. Rich provided me with a little insight on his son?s recruiting process.
Rich Caputo said his son has four top schools out of the more than 10 that have offered scholarships. In no particular order, mind you, Rich Caputo said his son?s top four schools include Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, and Pitt.
The Caputos recently made a visit to Wisconsin and have made several visits each to Ohio State, Penn State, and Pitt.
?Mike?s been playing it low-key,? Rich told me. ?He?s all about the team first and really tries to shy away from the limelight.?
But shying away from the limelight is kind of hard when #7 was such a featured and integral part of West Allegheny?s 12-3, WPIAL championship season last year. Mike Caputo ran for more than 2,600 yards, scored 38 total touchdowns, led the Indians in tackles and interceptions, and was a force on special teams too.
In addition to his top four schools, Caputo also has scholarship offers from schools like Boston College, Michigan, North Carolina State, Purdue and West Virginia.
During the 7-on-7 scrimmages this past weekend at Wannstedt?s passing camp, West A. head coach Bob Palko was rotating passing attempts Caputo and Dylan Bongiorni (who transfered from Burgettstown). Perhaps that means Caputo will throw the ball a little bit. Mostly, when Caputo took snaps in the shotgun last year, he ran the ball the vast majority of the time.
Interesting as I assumed he was all PSU. Guess we'll see very soon!cdiddy70;1744663; said:Mr. William (The Bank Greene), esq is reporting he will decide tomorrow 8/10/10.
Do any of the boards recruiting consigliares have any optimism?
Conventional wisdom suggest Wisky which, not to be condescending, begs the question of how hard we were recruiting him.
Based on what I've read, Ohio State, Penn State, and Pitt have all made it been known they prefer other targets. I think he'll end up at Wisconsin.matcar;1744665; said:Interesting as I assumed he was all PSU. Guess we'll see very soon!

SweetBuckeye;1744947; said:Pulling an offer means - OSU is no longer an option for you
"Perfer other options" means - we like you, but you are forth on our list. We have others that we've either offered first, or we feel better fit what we are looking for. If those other 3-4 go elsewhere, we want you to be a Buckeye.

Caputo's intangibles as impressive as his stats

ALLEGHENY, Pa. -- When Mike Caputo transferred to West Allegheny from a rival school before his junior year, he was joining a team that didn't qualify for the playoffs the prior season.
The Indians promptly won a district Class AAA title and made a state semifinal appearance.
As much as Caputo's 2,615 yards rushing and 38 touchdowns had to do with that, West Allegheny coach Bob Palko said the 6-foot-1 1/2, 205-pound running back/linebacker's intangibles were just as instrumental in the team's turnaround.
"One of his best qualities is raising the level of play and raising expectations," Palko said. "He's gotten the kids to buy into things and believe in things they didn't before."
Caputo said he wants to try to get everyone to buy into becoming a team and working toward accomplishing the same goal.
Caputo, on The Associated Press East Region 25 list of top recruits, chose Wisconsin over Ohio State, Penn State and Pitt. He was recruited as an athlete and was told he will ultimately play at strong safety. Initially, Caputo's skills lend themselves as an ideal special teams player.
Defending WPIAL Class AAA champion West Allegheny lost superstar running back/safety Mike Caputo, to a dislocated ankle in the Indians season opener against South Park.
That means Friday's Parkway Conference opener between Hopewell and Montour takes on even more significance. Hopewell is the defending Parkway Conference champion and WPIAL runner-up. Montour placed fourth in the conference with a young squad.
"[Caputo's injury] is a real shame," Hopewell coach Dave Vestal said. "I met him during the offseason and he's a terrific kid. He's a very exciting player. [West Allegheny] will be fine until he comes back. In fact, I expect him to be back for week nine."
