Because NY football just isn't very good. Having said that, we've plucked some good ones like Will Smith and Worthington from NY.

I agree, I grew up in NYC and there aren't too many HS football teams, or teams with a football field for that matter. And the school where this kid is from is especially known for their basketball players. Specifically Stephon Marbury, Sebastian Telfair and Lance Stephenson. There haven't been too many football players that went to major D1 schools from there. The only one I can think of is Nyan Boateng and he was even a star bball player with Telfair. Coney Island where the school is a breeding ground for bball players, but it's cool to see some high level football talent as well. It'd be interesting to see this kid at some camps to see how talented he is. Has he announced when he's visiting Cbus?

I was going to say something about He Got Game being filmed there too and forgot to update it, lol! Good looks though.
And Matacar, Will Smith and Worthington weren't from NYC, they were from upstate, that might as well be in another state or country as far as people from the city are concerned. Upstate NY is far more rural, and has a lot more football teams. NYC is mostly known for its basketball, and there aren't many HS that have been able to afford football fields. Good to hear that there is some talent coming out of the city, but I'd still be a little skeptical too about NYC talent. But if he was able to secure an offer from our staff and some of the top schools in america, I guess this kid has the goods.

Yeah, I know that those guys are from upstate NY. My comment is that, regardless of location in NY, there is relatively little football talent in the state. Having lived in Long Island for several years, I get that NYC doesn't give a crap about upstate, but having also lived elsewhere, I can tell you that few outside of NYC give a crap about NYC football or NY state football for that matter...'cause it doesn't yield a great deal of talent.

Back to Ishaq, here's hoping we get a closer look at him.

There are a lot of good players around NYC even if tOSU doesn't offer them -- Dominique Easley was the #2 ranked DT in the last class, and he is from Staten Island; 2007 1st team All Big Ten DE Mo Evans is from Brooklyn; current PSU RB Stephfon Green is from the Bronx. Long Island has produced a few players you may have heard of like Jim Brown, Vinny Testaverde and Boomer Esiason, and more recently 2008 1st team All Big Ten OG Rich Ohrnberger who is now with the Patriots. Those are just a few off the top of my head.

Sure, the number of players isn't high given the population, but that's no reason to be skeptical of their talent -- I've seen a lot more highly ranked recruits coming form the "down state" area than upstate as you claim.

I think you blew my statement out of proportion. I know there's talent that comes from the city. Talent can come from anywhere in America. But my point is that Williams isn't playing top tier talent every week. Yes there can be some talent come out of there, but I'm sure a lot of coaches would like to see him up close against some more elite competition as well. I hope he chooses the good guys in the end, he does look talented in the film

For the record, I was mad about Maurice Evans...but playing with guys from NYC and seeing them, I get the feeling that the city is more underexposed than anything it is a lot of talent as any major metropolitan area

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- It started in 2006 with Maurice Evans, picked up some traction with Dominique Easley in the last recruiting cycle, and now Ishaq Williams (Brooklyn/Abraham Lincoln) is about to make it a full-fledged trend of New York City producing great defensive linemen.

Evans, who attended Christ The King in Brooklyn, went on to Penn State and then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Easley, a 2010 Under Armour All-American who attended Curtis High School in Staten Island, will play for Florida this fall. Williams has the talent and work ethic to be just as good as either of them.

"One thing that sticks out to me about him is his businesslike approach to preparing for everything," Abraham Lincoln coach Shawn O'Connor said. "Everything from how he prepares academically to the entire recruiting process and on the field out at practice. I am starting to see more of his verbal leadership this offseason. Last year, as a junior, we wanted him to step up as a verbal leader, and now he's bringing the team along."
