Article says a "written offer from Ed Orgeron". This is why some schools send out 75-90 scholarships. They can back out claiming the head coach is the final say or the recruit is "slow played". This tactic is called an early interest sniff test. OSU typically evaluates in April and May after spring ball. Camp helps them determine new offers. I'm sure our strategy is the same. Focus on a smaller number.

Good bit of information. Thanks

Scout $ - Harley 'Ecstatic' Over USC Offer
By Bill Greene
Posted Feb 10, 2010

The Southern Cal offer has Harley thinking about delaying his decision from before the season to after... That way he can take all 5 OVs including one to USC... With having more options now, he's also considering bypassing the camp circuit this summer... Wake & Colorado may be close to offering as well...

OSU had indicated they wanted to see him at camp before offering. It will be interesting to see how this affects OSUs efforts...

But you've been around long enough to realize that it's still very, very early in the evaluation process...

I've also been around long enough to see the same situation play out before. I think we all know i'm one of those guys who will defend the staff until he's blue in the face. I trust the staff and how they go about things, that doesn't mean i'm going to always agree with them though. This is an offer that needs to go out sooner rather than later.

Duane's take, fwiw:

2011 - wheres the beef?

He comes off the ball like he is shot out of a cannon but he cannot play inside at 265. What happens to that explosiveness when he is 285 or 290? A very recent offer from USC has fans worked up again. I wonder if the staff has seen Harley up close. I would not offer him unless I saw him in person. Get a look at his body and see if he can handle the weight before I would offer.

I get wanting to see him in camp, but by that time the situation very well may have changed. The staff got a look at Donnal too, and I know DL was a bit upset about how that situation played out. I'm not knocking his opinion whatsoever, just saying that he should be the first to understand that people aren't always going to see eye-to-eye with every choice the staff makes.

Camp is ideal to see a recruits true height, weight and athleticism. In the end film never lies. 98% of the player evaluations are done via film. I'm sure the staff has seen something that has caused them to pause. There may be other recruits simply ranked higher on their board.
