100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock

"I know just what my claw is for...." You either get Lemmy, or you don't. Hard to rank things that produce such disparate opinions in chronological order, but hey, they tried.

You could say Horton Heat or Op Ivy should get a mention, but who cares...it's VH1!

Another opinion here of course, but they are a way better band than most of the ones in front of em. If Layne doesnt ruin himself with Heroin, they are still pumping out cd's, and proabably alot higher on the list. Might get slapped for this too, but oh well..........MUCH better band than Nirvana :)

You'll get no argument from me. I suspect Mothra would also agree.

Much like scUM in most preseason polls I've seen, Van Halen is way overrated.

I Love AIC, but I thing Nirvana gets the props for the fact that they were the genesis for a whole new genre. I loved that whole scene. Most people will credit Nirvana for being the most influential band, but in my opinion if you take a look at all of the music that has come since then, there are so many Alice rip offs out there its comical. Most of them suck, and GodSmack even took their name right out of one of their songs.

I would like to have seen Tool up there a little higher, but was happy to see the Pixies and Husker Du get their props, as they are probably as influential on modern music as anyone on the list.

Its funny, when Lonesome started that thread the other day about 80's music, and I took a look back at some of the music of the 80's. Its no wonder I latched onto Grunge, and the whole alternative scene so much when it finally came around. The 80's fucking sucked.

Both Soundgarden and Alice In Chains should be ranked ahead of Nirvana. I hate the VH1/MTV revisionist history that Nirvana started the "grunge scene," whatever the hell that means. I owned Soundgarden's Louder Than Love and Ultramega OK years before Nevermind was recorded, and Badmotorfinger was beginning-to-end better than any greatest hits compilation Nirvana could assemble. Hell, I'll listen to Foo Fighters over Nirvana, as I think Grohl's songwriting is far better than Cobain's, and Grohl was never given the chance to fully show his talent in Cobain's (and Courtney's) shadow.

I saw Soundgarden in concert with Faith No More and Voivod in the late 80s. I'd take any of those three over Nirvana any day of the week.

Iron Maiden is, IMHO, a Top 5 band. Iron Maiden took the pyrotechnics and over-the-top stage performances of KISS to a whole different stratosphere, and is among the top grossing live acts of all time. The majority of Americans have always undervalued Maiden. In Britain, Iron Maiden has had more #1 singles than any other performer aside from the Beatles. Even more than Ozzy has in his entire career, including his time with Sabbath. I'd put Maiden's Live After Death album down as the greatest live recording ever. When they were at their peek from '82 - '86, they couldn't be touched.

That list is a travashamockery. Suicidal Tendencies aren't on it. Danzig isn't on it. Hell, for better or worse, the pioneers of hair-metal glam-rock, Poison, aren't even on it!

Yep, as I said in a different thread. Europe (England specifically) has MUCH better music taste than this country. Agree on the Danzig comment as well.

Soundgarden definitely did start the "Grunge" era, which I kinda look at sideways as being an "era". Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP ran with it.
AIC released Facelift in 91........Nevermind came out in 92. Soundgarden was the original, AIC was the second, although as much as I love Soundgarden, think AIC was a better band. Cornell's solo stuff is brilliant as well. If you are a soundgarden fan, and havent heard it, I highly recommend.

So, Dryden, are you saying that you don't really like Nirvana all that much? :)

Actually, Nirvana's Bleach album came out in 1989 - it's still their best work, IMO. More metal, and not as "grungy" as Nevermind, but the roots are there.

BTW, the pioneer of hair-metal glam-rock was David Bowie; he was also a huge influence on English punk, believe it or not....

OK, for the record, the first great grunge album was Mudhoney's self-titled release from 1987/1988. It came before "Touch Me I'm Sick" and it is easily a top-50 album of all time even if everything else Mudhoney did afterwards was mediocre. Soundgarden with the Asian bassist could make a good argument, as well, but the nod goes to the unmentioned fuzzy-tuners.

Best post of the thread...

It seems like a few of us agree that Suicidal Tendencies and The Germs being left off is a crime. I agree to that maybe the Deftones just haven't been around long enough or have a large enough catalog, but I still think they are pioneers in the metal world. I guarantee any list of this sort 10 years from now will include The Mars Volta. They are the most innovative band out there right now (in my opinion), and while it took the death of At the Drive-In to get us to this point, they are simply amazing...although I am not sure if they are commercial enough for VH1.

I will agree with you on VH III, but Halen was a MUCH more successful band with Sammy. In fact, Sammy is a much much better artist than Dave could ever hope to be. Now mind you, i am not talking about my ass, I love Halen with Dave and Sammy.....but you could see so much more talent with Sammy as the front man. Roth + Halen = better party band. Sammy + Halen = Much more organized and talented band.
I followed Halen with Roth and Hagar but my interest dropped off after the Carnal Knowledge album. IMPHO I felt their music was all the same after that.....a formula if you will. I still love Fair Warning, II and Women and Children.....it was a lot rawer then. The Hagar stuff was too pop for me - lot's of ballads and love songs. Eddie was so much better before Hagar....I think the bad relationship between he and Roth pissed him off so much that his outlet were the great riffs and creativity. The music was different. Arguably, one could see the difference in their last 3 albums (with Roth) Women and Children, Diver Down and then 1984. They sounded different - all three of them. I still love 'Top Jimmy' - my favorite song from 1984.

I totally agree with you about the Roth + Halen being a better party band. Even though Van Hagar had "bocephus mode" it never compared to Roth saying at the '83 US Festival "They (the police) asked me if I expected more trouble this weekend during the Van Halen concert. I said you bet your ass baby....."

Or how about this Roth one-liner (A fan squirts him with water and he yells down) "Watch it pal, or I'll fuck your girlfriend" Typical pompous DLR but it was great stuff.

I could see that. Just depends on your taste in music I guess. I loved 5150, and I actually was a big fan of Balance.

I like Sammy's solo stuff much better than anything he did with Halen.
I have seen VH with Hagar 3 times. F.U.C.K. is my fav album with Hagar and 5150 sounds Awesome in a car with a really kick ass system.
