'10 OH RB Erick Howard (Ohio U Walk-On)

If those r honestly the 2 options u see viable, then I wouldn't see this kid coming to Columbus, and why should he? If I'm one of the top RBs and recruits in my state why grayshirt. I know getting Howard may be kind of a pipdream at this point, but I just prefer the method of bringing in the top talent(especially if a kid has outright said he wants to be part of your team) and letting them settle it on the field. Many schools haven't had problems with this method, didn't the U have Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, and najeh Davenport on the roster(not to mention at least 3 other RBs) and they seemed to do alright. I just wouldn't want to pass up Howard and he goes to say MSU, or Cincy and tears it up and all of us r saying, "What if". I know we can't get every recruit, and we're fine if we sign him or not, but this kid just seems like a special talent.

You take a grayshirt because you really want to be a Buckeye and the current class is full. With the depth at running back the likely hood of a redshirt season is high. If he takes care of business off the field, he's got scholarship offers to other schools to enroll in August or a scholarship to enroll at OSU in January. In both cases he's still got a full ride scholarship to college.

Here's my 2 cents:

Saine is listed at 6'1" 217. He holds the state record for the 100M. At least as physically blessed as Beanie, Brandon is now a Jr and has yet to develop into an elite RB. Yes, he has had some very good games and could blossom his SENIOR year, after which he's gone.

Boom is listed at 5'11" 193. He does not have beak away speed. Boom finds the hole well, IMHO Boom is a serviceable back but will never become an elite player in the Big Ten. Love him dearly, but talent wise he should be a back up at tOSU.

Hyde: Academic issues, no guarantees this will not continue once he gains admission. Also, has never played a down of CFB, so who knows if he is a better RB than Howard.

Berry: Already had one bout with off field issues, please see above. Berry has at least as much talent as Eugene Clifford.:(

Rod Smith: Again is he a better back than Mr. Football, who knows until spring practice.

That leaves Martin, recruited as a fullback, and Jordon Hall. However it
turns out with Howard it isn't that big a deal. I'm still in the camp of sign Howard if we can.

And everything you said is reiterating my points. Boom and Zoom aren't cutting it. Hall is the only true RB that we know can tote the rock, and we need someone else(at least 2 other RBs) to help with the load. Many kids have had academic problems and get it together, and I hope Hyde does. Berry is looking pretty injury prone already. even though I'd like to give him some time. And we don't know what we're getting with Rod Smith, just like we don't with Howard, and that's why u look at them both, for those just in case reasons. Boom and Zoom have had a myriad of injuries, and now it's looking like so does Berry. I think Martin's going back to FB so I don't even count him. So Boom will more or less be a backup, as would Zoom if he keeps going with the injuries. So that leaves a bunch of hungry young RBs to prove themselves. And I think Howard is like an Ethiopan kid with flies on his, he's so hungry! That's what makes me like this kid. If he's given a chance, I think he makes the most of it! But of course that's just my opinion.

I don't have anything new to add right now, and I am clearly biased since I have watched Erick play since his freshman year, which he began on the freshman team before moving to varsity after three games. Those were an amusing three games because, every time he touched the ball he scored. He had something like 18 touchdowns in three games. But I digress. Anyhow, if you have not had the opportunity to watch him play, his game will be televised on STO (at least locally) at 7 PM tomorrow. Massillon held St. Ignatius to 26 points in a 5 point loss, so they appear to be fairly talented this year. It should be a tough game. With temps in the 50-60 range and a clear sky, it should be a fast track as Tiger Stadium has real-turf. Howard is worth the price of admission when he gets it going, which is usually every game that doesn't involve Louisville.

Maybe I do have more to add. My stepdad taught at Buchtel, so I watched Ricky Powers play a lot of football when he dominated the state of Ohio in the late 80's on the way to back-to-back state titles. I watched Antonio Pittman play. I watched Chris Wells play several games. Howard has looked every bit as good, or better, than any of those backs, and has done it against much stiffer competition. No offense to anyone from Akron, but they have some really bad football teams and a couple of average ones in the city series. Buchtel was a D2 contender for quite a while, and Garfield is decent from time to time, but that is about it. Howard runs in a league that sends multiple D1 schools to the playoffs every year, and against schools that send multiple players to big time schools every year and still puts up big numbers. I understand not wanting to sacrifice depth at other positions by overloading on rb, but I don't think you pass on elite talent at any point. As I recall, Jim Brown was still in his hay-day when the Browns took Ernie Davis. Just saying. Will Howard turn out to be an elite college back? Who knows? Powers certainly didn't (although UM screwed him), but Howard sure looks like a rare breed on the field.

I think Ohio State is plenty talented at running back as it is. You're saying we aren't stockpiling now? But if we add one more guy, we are? Our running back depth next year is going to be insane. And so many of these guys are completely different style runners and that is sweet. We're even bringing in a guy like Corey Brown who can really make a big impact at both running back and at receiver. Then you have Saine, Herron, Hall, Martin, Berry, Rod Smith, Corey Brown, and Carlos Hyde. Tell me that isn't stockpiling!! Wow.

Massillon hangs on to beat Hoover, 17-10

MASSILLON An angry group of Massillon Tigers took the field Saturday night.

A loss to their rival a week ago left them that way. If that wasn?t enough, the Tigers also were playing a Hoover High School team that ended their season a year ago.
. . .
A crowd of 6,898 watched Massillon take a 17-3 lead into halftime and hang on from there. Hoover pounded away with Erick Howard, the state?s reigning Mr. Football and Stark County?s first player to eclipse 6,000 rushing yards.

But as hard as Howard ran, the Tigers hit and tackled with an equal power. They limited him to 99 yards on 38 bruising carries.
. . .
Hoover got within 17-10 after Howard scored on a 1-yard run with 6:42 left in the third.

Youre saying it like stockpiling is a bad thing! All of the best teams in CFB do it and have been quite successful! I just don't think you should turn away a very talented kid who really wants to be a buckeye! Besides look at the injuries we've had this year and tell me that you wouldn't want several RBs back there waiting. Saine is constantly injured, Herron is a backup, Martin should be put back at FB, Corey Brown is a WR. So you'll have Hyde, Berry, Hall, Rod Smith and hopefully Howard to duke it out(along with Zoom and Boom of course) for a solid rotation of 3RBs with several others waiting in the wings in case the injury bug hits. And it usually does, because this is football and not patty-cake. USC has been decimated by injuries to their RBs and they went 8 deep! I wouldn't want to go into Big 10 play next year again with only 2-3 healthy RBs.
