'10 OH OL Matt James (Notre Dame Signee - RIP)

I don't think it is Kelly locking them down, I think it is assistant Coach Coombs -- he is a legend in Cincinnati high school football, especially on the west side, and will be the next UC head coach.

He is a legend in Colerain football, and that is it. Coombs would not be able to lock down Cincy recruiting more than any other coach would. But yeah doubt he'll be the next HC.

Regardless, it looks more and more like BK to ND which doesn't look good for James.

Sepia, I was actually working on this when your post came in....

Since 2004....

Rivals lists 316 recruits from Cincinnati....

Ohio State has offered 13 of those 316 (4.11%)....

Ohio State has signed 5 of those 13 (Schoenhoft, Smith, Moeller, Clifford, Posey), and has a verbal commitment from one other (Norwell)....

Notre Dame has signed one of those 13 (Rudolph), and has verbal commitments from two others (Hendrix, Welch)....

Michigan has signed one of those 13 (Mixon)....

Tennessee has signed one of those 13 (Martin)....

LSU has a verbal commitment from one of those 13 (Ware)....

One of the 13 is still undecided (James)....

UC has signed none of the 13.

I do not know of a single case where a recruit has signed with UC while holding an offer from tOSU. It may have happened at some point in the distant past, but I rather doubt it. Of course, Matt James may do so this year, so I guess that it's still possible for tOSU to lose a recruit to UC.

In any event, if there "aren't many Cincy players heading to cbus," it has nothing to do with Brian Kelly doing a "decent job of keeping some of the local talent going to UC" ... but rather it has everything to do with big-time programs signing a kid here and there.

Excellent post, LJB...

as I stated on other 'UC' threads, the key for success in UC recruiting is not trying to win battles with OSU...it is winning battles against Purdue, UK, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State, etc...

So far, Kelly has done a good job of winning his share of recruiting battles with those schools.

Powlus visited St. Xavier today
Posted by mdyer December 2nd, 2009

Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Ron Powlus told St. Xavier football coach Steve Specht today that he assumed Notre Dame will want to fill the job as quickly as possible but he didn?t know what the Notre Dame timeline will be.

Notre Dame is one of the schools St. X senior OL Matt James is considering. James scheduled an official visit to Notre Dame Dec. 5, but that is up in the air at this point.

James, who is 6 feet 7 and 290 pounds, has also scheduled official visits with Ohio State (Dec. 12), Florida (Dec. 19) and UC in January.

Specht said James will wait until a new coach is named at Notre Dame before he makes his official visit.

James, one of the nation?s top recruits in the 2010 class, will certainly have plenty of attention in the upcoming weeks with his scheduled visits. The initial signing period begins Feb. 3.

?At this point, he may end up committing on signing (day),? Specht said.

Notre Dame football: ND program won't fall far
By BOB WIENEKE

The way Tom Lemming sees it, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick's coaching search doesn't have to end with a superstar hire.

...
Matt James, OT, Cincinnati. Notre Dame, at, best had a 50-50 shot with Cincinnati (where James' father played and where one of his teammates is committed) and Ohio State. Probably lower than that now, although if Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly gets the job, those odds change.
