Game Thread #1 Texas at #2/#3 tOSU, Sat. Aug. 30th, 12pm ET, FOX

Just want to say the xichgan game plan was probably fine, except for some reason we didn't have a competent backup QB... I really hope Kenholtz is legit, cause I can't watch another "The Game" with a concussed qb.

The scUM game plan was not "probably fine". We did the exact same stupidity that caused USC and Minnesota to lose to them in the end as well. We played into their literal one glaring strength by constantly trying to run right into their 2 first round DTs.

Not afraid at all. I would be more afraid if it were an old RB doing the calling. Seriously, if Hartline goes 70% passes with that WR room, would we be disappointed?

I dont expect anything like that because he has plenty of experienced guys to lean on and the talent will dictate the day.
I would be. Balance is still critical, even with all the receiving weapons, especially with a brand new QB.

Hartline can call whatever he wants and it will work 95% of the time against our schedule. We need that joker to call an even better 5% when the chips are on the line against a stud team. Chip, during the playoffs, went savage mode. For that…I thank him.

So yes, that is my worry, the 5% and we will see the 5% right out of the gate.

Yeah I get the concern over the new coordinators though. There’s going to likely be growing pains because of how much talent we lost. Just have to hope we don’t lull too much and we learn from mistakes quick.

I think we matchup very well vs Texas to be honest.
The new coordinators could actually be to our favor with it being the first game of the season. Can't wait for the game to be played. Go Bucks!

What has me confused is arch being tabbed as the best QB in college football. He might be good but wtf is that? I get it’s likely due to his name but I just don’t get that.

He’s got 4 new starters up front, lost his three best WRs and his best RB yet he’s so kind of QB gift from heaven after having played back up snaps as a gadget QB for 2 years?

I don’t get his hype and man I’m tired of hearing about Texas being a given proven thing. Why is no one accounting for all the starters they lost? They may have lost more than we have.

Agreed! Typical hype machine. Though I do expect that he's a really good QB. But as you said, losing four starting OL, especially with it bei g the first game of the season, is really going to be a challenge for their Offense, IMHO.

Bring on the hype! Plays into our hands. More pressure on the all back of the jersey player to live up to.

31-17, or worse.

Our lines are going to beat them to death
I was just thinking about this today and my number was 28-17. I don’t think that it’s out of the question for it to be more. Considering that they are rebuilding their o-[line, even given that we are replacing four staters on our d-line, with the defense generally being ahead of the offense early in the season, I like our position on that front. From there, I trust what we’re hearing about the OL considering what we saw from 3 of the projected starters in the post season. I think the OL will be a strength for us. If they are what we hear them to be, an accurate QB who makes good and quick decisions with the receivers + TE we have will be a lot of fun to watch. Combine that with a RB room that has one of the presumed ‘pair’ (and a spare) is being compared to JK Dobbins… That’s not even to speak to what we might see out of a Matt Patricia defense… I’m looking forward to that defense as much as any I can remember. Yeah, I’m bullish for this game. I’m pretty bullish for the season.

Agreed.

Their o line is brand new and banged up which isn’t great vs a defensive line that returns more experience than most think. Then you add in Atkinson, Hicks, and the LBs in pressure? Uphill battle for Texas here.

Then you move to their defensive line vs our offensive line. They couldn’t get pressure last year so why would that all the sudden be an issue this year with an offensive line returning 4? You add in the fact that they are a smaller bunch (and two smaller linebackers) that’s not exactly great news for them. Credit to Texas for basically taking every transfer DT out of desperation but Texas is even in worse shape in this matchup IMO.

Either way it’s about the trenches and I’d be shocked if we don’t own both LOS. Personally I don’t see where they have an advantage.

I’m trying not to be a homer here but where is Texas’ advantage? It’s not their OL, their DL is at best a push, laughable with their secondary vs our skill, and I think their WR skill isn’t what it was either.

So where is their advantage?

If Texas is going to win they’ll have to run the ball, create turnovers, and capitalize. Otherwise I don’t see how this is a problem for OSU.

The Manning hype is what they are about this year. You are 100% correct and that's how I see it also.

Which I don’t get as I said already.

I’m sure he’ll be good but if he was elite he would’ve been the starter last year.

You add in that new OL (which again is banged up), with losing their two best WRs, their best RB, and one of the best TEs? Sort of hard to be dominant if you’re running for your life.
