Final Four a father-son story
Conley Sr. among those who know all about glory
Saturday, March 31, 2007 3:45 AM
By Todd Jones

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ATLANTA -- If they had a different relationship, one forged by the son trying to live up to the father, then this would be an appropriate place for Mike Conley Sr. to pass his family's athletic torch to his namesake.

After all, this is the city where Mike Conley Jr., at age 8 in 1996, watched his father triple-jump in his third and final Olympic Games.
So the temptation is to focus on a metaphoric circle being completed today when Mike Conley Sr. watches his son, Ohio State's freshman point guard, start on college basketball's biggest stage against Georgetown in the Final Four.

Bob Hunter commentary: Eyes will be on Oden-Hibbert matchup

Saturday, March 31, 2007 3:44 AM
By bob hunter

ATLANTA -- Greg Oden was asked every conceivable question about being matched up against Roy Hibbert, and he handled each the way he does a reckless 6-foot-7 center, deftly swatting the feeble offerings into the stratosphere.

It's not a one-on-one matchup, it's five-on-five. ? There's one post player out of the five guys on the floor, so most of the scoring is going to come from someone else. ? I'm just going to play my game. ? I'm just going to work hard.
Hibbert was a little more open to discussion on the topic, but there was none of that Joey Dorsey I've-been-waiting-to-get-a-hold-of-this-overrated-chump stuff.
Apparently when there is a real matchup for the ages -- and this could be just that -- it stands tall (sorry) on its own.
Ohio State's 7-foot Oden vs. Georgetown's 7-2 Hibbert is the first Final Four matchup between two pure star centers since Hakeem Olajuwon met Patrick Ewing in 1984, which says something about how rare this is.

ATLANTA -- His teammates learned to play without him, and play well enough to win without him.

But with only four teams standing, now is not one of those times when Ohio State wants to show the college basketball world what it can do without Greg Oden.
"That's the way teams have been hanging in with Ohio State, getting him in foul trouble," Georgetown forward Jeff Green said.
That likely is what Georgetown will try to do, and what Ohio State will try to avoid when the teams meet tonight in an NCAA national semifinal in the Georgia Dome. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:07 p.m.

Keys to the game

Saturday, March 31, 2007 3:41 AM

Box out the big guy

Roy Hibbert, the Hoyas' 7-foot-2 center, is the leading rebounder in the NCAA Tournament (11.5 per game). That's nearly five more than his regular-season average. However, Hibbert has disappeared in five of Georgetown's six losses. He surpassed his average only once in those defeats and collected three rebounds or fewer in four losses. Hibbert had 14 rebounds in last year's tournament win over the Buckeyes.

ATLANTA -- Ohio State fans might remember Georgetown's Jeff Green from last year when he scored 19 points in an upset of the Buckeyes in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. What does he remember most?
"Rebounds and assists," he said.
Green had eight rebounds and six assists that afternoon in Dayton. Keep that in mind tonight during the national semifinal. Many of the faces have changed, especially on the Ohio State side, but the challenge remains the same: The Buckeyes want to find a way to neutralize Green, a 6-foot-9 junior. But that won't be easy.

Difference could be who's better at foul line
Ohio State, Florida have most experience
Saturday, March 31, 2007 3:38 AM
By Ken Murray

The Baltimore Sun

National championship on the line. Two free throws, one-point deficit, three seconds left. Who do you want to take the shots?

If you're Ohio State, you probably want Ron Lewis, who hasn't missed in four NCAA Tournament games and is a 78 percent foul shooter this season. You might not want Greg Oden's 64 percent; he shot left-handed much of his season while recovering from surgery on his right wrist.
If you're Florida, you want Taurean Green, who stroked 85 percent at the line. You don't want Lee Humphrey, who has taken just 12 foul shots in more than 1,100 minutes this season, none in the tournament.

Ron Lewis, pressuring Xavier's Drew Lavender, is the second-leading scorer in the NCAA Tournament at 21.8 points per game. Lewis will need to overcome a size mismatch against Georgetown.

Matchup to watch

One of Georgetown's forwards, 6-foot-9 Jeff Green or 6-8 DaJuan Summers, will give the Hoyas a size mismatch against 6-4 Ohio State guard Ron Lewis. Green was Big East player of the year. Summers has averaged 17.5 points the past two games. Lewis is the second-leading scorer (21.8) in the NCAA Tournament. As they did in a tournament loss to Georgetown last season, the Buckeyes may play zone to try to neutralize their size disadvantage and limit Greg Oden's exposure to foul trouble.

'It's crunch time'
Saturday, March 31, 2007
By NANCY ARMOUR
AP National Writer

ATLANTA Greg Oden stood at center court, checking out clips of Ohio State games on the Jumbotron while fellow freshmen Daequan Cook and Mike Conley stole glances around the cavernous Georgia Dome.

This whole season has been one new experience after another for the Baby Buckeyes, and they've managed to handle them all with poise and maturity. But the Final Four, well, there's nothing that can quite prepare them for this circus.

When the top-seeded Buckeyes (34-3) play second-seeded Georgetown (30-6) tonight, it's going to be louder, more crowded and more intense than anything they've ever seen.
