SCRIMMAGE GROVE CITY

BIG WALNUT 60+-GROVE CITY 0

STUDLEIN ROLLS OVER GROVE CITY

Edit: Definitely a smaller school with less talent. Nothing to brag about here. Next week at Thomas Worthington. That will be a true testament to Will's domination of high school football. Will has two super stars with him in his quest in Ethan Wetzel and Jared Suvak. This is going to be a great year for Big Nut. Studlein's brother was all state in 2002 when Big Nut went to state.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying that Thomas Worthington is a better test than Grove City? If you are basing it on the fact that it was just a scrimmage against GC and that scrimmages mean nothing, then I'm in agreement 100%, but TW isn't close to the program GC is. BTW, Joe Reed and Colton Griffis are two other top notch defenders for Big Walnut who could get some D-IA attention.

You are right on... and no i am not really saying anything. i was just caught up in celebration. Big Walnut did not play Grove City but Central Crossing. Both schools are tough programs(GC and Worthington) as well as Central Crossing's up and coming program. It will be a major player in the future. I also know scrimmages don't mean anything. I apologise if I offeneded anyone as that was not my intent. I am just so happy football is back, it makes me go into a frenzy.

In any case, Will did great. Very stingy D. And I agree with you about Reed and Griffis. They definitely compliment the team.

Big Walnut faces rugged schedule in bid to return to State Playoffs

We face four Division I schools (Thomas Worthington, Delaware Hayes, Olentangy, Westerville Central) in our first five games,” he(Coach Wetzel) pointed out, adding, “three of our five OCC Capital Division opponents made the playoffs last season and all five are Division II schools,” listing Watkins Memorial, with whom the Golden Eagles shared the OCC Cap title, Liberty and New Albany.

Juniors returning are split end-defensive back Jacob Deltedesco (5-10, 165), tight end-linebacker Brian Dillion (6-2, 190), split end-defensive back Nick Heiden (6-0, 175), runningback-defensive back Patrick Daugherty 5-9, 155), tight end-defensive lineman Colton Griffis (6-6, 280), offensive lineman-linebacker Will Studlien (6-3, 225), offensive lineman-linebacker Nate Scarbury (6-2, 225), lineman Logan Mead (5-10, 205), lineman Kalven Baer (5-11, 230) and lineman Travis Mead (6-2, 230) who lettered last fall as sophomores.

Big Walnut opens with a win over Thomas Worthington.

Again very stingy D. Will was in on almost every play. Every kid on the team played great. Will is surrounded by talent. No stats available yet but it was an awesome sight!

Big Nut - 41

TWHS - 6

Many kids got to see play time and the only Worthington TD came when 2nd and 3rd Teams were in.

Big Walnut fans basically overtook the area and the spirit definitely played a factor.

My son and I attended the first half of the TW game to check out Will. Here are my less than informed assessments of Will, FWIW:

1. TW was a typical TW team. Short on talent and - as a team - short on competitive spirit. I don't know why, but TW has been the polar opposite of WK over the years.

2. Studlien looked a bit shorter to me than his listed height, but determining that accurately is impossible from the stands. Will played well in the half I watched. Notable strengths were his pursuit to the ball (relentless), effectiveness at contact (no one got away from him) and reading/nose for the ball. I was very impressed the way he read a screen play that was fairly well disguised. He made his initial read, quickly diagnosed the screen and got out there and broke it up. I noted also that Studlien was reading and reacting more than blitzing every play. IMO, that is very important. A lot of stud HS linebackers in effect blitz every play, which does not translate well to college. Studlien more often than not played straight up - reading and reacting. Very impressive nose for the ball.

3. I wouldn't say Will is a step slow, but speed is not his strongest asset at this point. He rarely was late to a spot, so he has sufficient speed for HS. Another step faster, however, and he would be a no brainer for OSU. As it is, I can see why the staff may wait to offer him. There is every reason to expect he will pick up that step over the next year. He apparently is aware that this is something he has to work on, so with his work ethic I think he will get where he needs to be.

4. Will played a significant amount of OG in the first half. After the first series I noticed him on O, he sat the next series out on D. Later in the quarter, however, he was in on both O and D and to my eye he looked like he was getting a little fatigued by half time. He did an excellent job at OG, which is clearly NOT his position in college. I liked what I saw though because some of the physical skills he showed at OG translate well to LB. He pulled on a number of plays and on each one made a nice kick out block on the DB forcing the sweep. Making contact with a DB in space is a tough assignment for an OG, but Will had no problem making solid contact. That showed me his agility. On pass pro he used good technique, set up well with a good punch. He kept his feet moving VERY well, again a reflection of his agility.

5. Overall, I was very impressed with Will. If things go as I think they will, I believe he will get an OSU offer. But I would not be surprised if that offer does not come until next summer's OSU camp.

P.S. The other inside linebacker - #22 -looked pretty good as well. However, he got points taken off with me when - after making a nice play behind the LOS - he did a sort of pelvic thrust to his sideline in celebration. The officials immediately threw a flag as they should have and I saw no more of that out of him. I don't think the BW HC was amused. :)

Before anything goes further, the listed height is correct and will be verified before you know it.

the delay was due to him missing camp with an ankle sprain. had he made it to camp he would have got an offer with Storm Klein. He will get an offer all things stay the same or improve. As far as speed goes how do you think he is in on almost every tackle? It is his speed. That is what God gave him.

Will made the transition from LB and as far as him being fatigued, no way. He was pulled out of respect. BW was blowing out TW and BW put in their 2nd and 3rd string.

I agree. The kid was caught up on a big play. He is forgiven.

No matter how much you downplay the quality of football at TW, they are D1 and BW is D3. TW was the only school to beat this BW senior class when they were frosh. They were undefeated as 7th and 8th graders. This game was payback and if TW looked sub par it was because of the heart and determination of Big Walnut.

Last Year Studlien, who led the team with 124 tackles, made the transition to guard almost seamlessly...This year Big Walnut's winning tradition will get tested early. Four of its first five opponents are Division I schools before it attempts to defend its shared OCC-Capital title.

I am not going to get into a detailed tit for tat with someone who obviously is a big BW fan. My opinion is just that. I could be wrong, could be right. Anyone who follows OCC football knows about TW's history and they are generally pretty sorry, period. I am not trying to downplay BW by saying that, I am giving other posters some perspective about the competition in this particular game. I don't get your comment about pulling Studlien "out of respect." I was referring to the FIRST offensive series he played and the next subsequent defensive series. That happened late in the first quarter. I don't think that respect had anything to do with it. Finally, if you believe Studlien is a gazelle, so be it.
