'08 VA OL Kyle Long (Florida State baseball - Saddleback College - Oregon signee)

With Shugarts to verbal tomorrow and Jenkins possibly in the bag(that's the word anyways), I think it seems as if the staff may go a different direction.
Maybe I'm way off base, but I just don't see JT pulling an offer from Howie Long's son.

I agree. They won't pull the schollie, but they may recruit him a little less. Has anyone seen a recruit quoted as saying, "I haven't heard from them in a while." However, I don't think they will slow down on a very athlectically gifted kid like Long. The coaches are intent on recruiting Virginia and getting a guy like Long can help make inroads. The coaches are especially good at getting kids with football lineage.

This is a really tough kid to read. Everybody just assumed that OSU was the favorite for a long time, and rightfully so, but it seems now that he's got other options on his mind (baseball, UVA, FSU, USC...). I don't see us slowing his recruitment at all. If Howie Long's kid wants to play football at your school, you take him, period. Kyle will be a great player whichever position he chooses to play.

The nice thing is that the coaching staff doesn't need to make any more of a push than they already have, yet they still need to show interest. If he does choose football rest assured Block O will be all over him.

I don't think we would pull an offer from him either...if he really wants to be a Buckeye, there should be room. However, Long has kind of lost some interest in OSU due to baseball and seems to love the warm weather of USC and FSU. The staff has 2 tackles in Adams and Shugarts, a center/guard with Brew, and a guard with Jenkins if we get him. We are looking to take 4 OL and if/when we get Jenkins, I believe we're done. I just think we will stop pursuing Long that much, not pull his offer. Good move imo because with 3 in and 1 seemingly close, I think the focus needs to shift to other prospects like Pryor, Floyd, Tate, Hale, etc.

There is a lot of chatter about FSU and Long right now...it may not matter whether the staff pulls the offer or not. As of right now it is looking very good to land Adams, Brewster and Shugarts. Jenkins is still a big question mark to me, Mealer has slipped away and Long could be doing the same. I hope the staff is as confident about Jenkins as they appear to be, otherwise I would have had an offer out to Mealer by now. If Mealer sticks with his UM commitment and Jenkins sticks with WVU, Marc Stevens could end up back in the picture real quick...if it's not too late to charge after Long or Shaw.

With Adams, Brewster, and (apparently) Shugarts already in the fold, Ohio State can spend the next nine months looking for a fourth and possibly fifth offensive lineman. Quite a nice position for the staff to be in - they can continue to work on Long and Jenkins, while at the same time looking for sleepers and late-developing prospects. No need to panic and offer kids who aren't OSU caliber.

Hey LJB- Do you think it's possible that the coaching staff may have tried to get a verbal commitment from Long early and the staff may be heading in a different direction? Because to me, it seems he's heading in different directions than he was just a few weeks ago and it seems we've picked up a lot of steam with Jenkins.

Exactly...with Adams, Shugarts, and Brewster in, we really aren't in a big hurry to figure out who we will take. Long is a possibility for sure, though we are pursuing Jenkins more and we have a better shot at him right now. Plus camp is coming up and I have a feeling it will be hard to pass on offering Greg Shaw. But BuckTwenty...not LJB and I can't really confirm this for sure, but the vibe and word going around that I have heard has been that Long is leaning towards baseball or a warm weather school and playing both. I do think the staff has relented quite a bit on Long, especially with 2 tackles in the fold. Long would be icing now, not the cake.

Makes sense to me. Thanks RB
