'08 PA LB Shayne Hale (Pitt signee)

I honestly see Hale playing DE in college. The kid is huge. He's already 6'4, 240 and he's only going to get bigger. Reminds me a bit of Brandon Graham who was actually a little bigger at the same stage, he was 250. Hale is a real big kid with a big frame, and I would put money on him throwing on 20-25 pounds by the time he's a rs frosh in college and playing with his hand down at DE.

I think Hale would definitely be a LB before Williams would be, if only because of frame.

I actually think Hale would be better suited for the Carp role than Williams would be. I think he's a natural linebacker with the instincts, size, and athletic ability to put his hand in the dirt when needed. Williams could also serve in that capacity, but he's already so large, and he's so good at rushing the passer that I just see him being a terror off the end.

Either way, I hope we have to decide which positions Williams and Hale will be playing. It would certainly be a nice problem to have. :)

The package deal is also a bit complex in that I highly doubt UM would honor their offer to Saddler if Hale verbals elsewhere.

I don't know about that. I think they actually would honor his schollie. Michigan needs LB'ers desperately, not DE's, and IMO Hale is probably going to wind up playing DE in college. Besides, Saddler is an explosive player who could field KR/PR and that is a position of need for UM with the graduation of Steve Breaston and Marquis Maze going to Alabama. Saddler might only be 5'7 and in the 160's, but the kid has got a sick shuttle time and ran legit back to back low 4.4's in the 40 at a recent NIKE combine. Kids got good testing numbers and it shows on the field as he's one of the most explosive return men in the country.

I'm sure UM would love to land Hale, but they wouldn't just throw out a scholarship to Saddler to try and entice Hale. This is UM we're talking about, they don't just throw out offers. UM wouldn't offer Roanld Johnson's brother Corey during the RoJo saga, and I think they wanted Ronald more than any other player in a long, long time. I think they definetly wanted him more than they want Hale right now.

Good point Super Mario. Cameron Saddler would be a great pickup as a kick returner for Michigan. I've been waiting for Michigan to try to get a recruit that was mainly focused on returning kicks. If Saddler is as good as advertised in the returning game than Michigan would be happy with a commitment.

The recruitment of Shayne Hale is in my opinion going to come down to UM and Osu. I know Michigan definitely wants him as a linebacker, even if he grows into a DE. I hope Osu gets the kid out of Florida and Hale is then swayed to UM. Osu already has two maybe three linebackers this class. (sweat, williams, and maybe torrence)

Torrence won't be a lb IMO. After people see what he does at runningback this year at massilon, I don't think anyone will want him a linebacker anymore, and that's not saying anything bad about his linebacking skills.

I think Hale will be a Carp type LB here, if he comes here. I don't see him moving down to DE fulltime. He's the type of talent that coaches try to use in incredibly versatile ways, such as Will Smith, Carp, Gholston, etc... I think he'll be that type of player here.

How big was Carp as a HS junior? Was he 6'4, 240+ pounds? Hale isn't exactly carrying around baby fat that he could trim to get down either. The kid is pretty solidly built. Hale is just a big kid and you know he's going to grow and do so pretty rapidly once he's on a college level S&C program.

I really see the kid playing DE in college, especially if he decides to go to an ACC/SEC school. They play DE's who are seniors at 245 in the ACC/SEC. Hale is pushing 245 and he isn't even a high school senior yet.

I'm not sure, but I don't see Hale getting much bigger than 260, which is around Carp's weight his senior year, and when you add in the fact that Hale is an elite athlete with linebacker skills, I don't see why it's crazy to see him in that role.

I see him staying Big Ten, and in the Big Ten, linebackers are usually 240 and ends are usually 260-280, so Hale couldn't definitely play a Carp role.

Edit: As a freshman at Ohio State, Carpenter weighed 240 pounds. Hale could easily play that role IMO, or he could easily play MLB. If Schlegel could play MLB, considering his size, there's no reason to think Hale couldn't.

Point taken, and I guess it's more about the individual than it is about size.

I just have a hard time seeing a kid who is only a JR who is pushing 245 pounds play LB'er in college. Saw it happen to Michigan twice with Woodley and Graham. They were both excellent athletes who put up great testing numbers at combines as juniors- Woodley ran a 4.01 shuttle at 245 pounds at an MSL combine, Graham ran a 4.63-40 in tennis shoes at a Nike combine at 250 pounds- which lead many a UM faithful to think both would stay at LB'er in college and be our MLB'er of the future. Turns out kids who are 245-250 as HS juniors won't stop growing!
