Not to go OT, but I have a serious problem with this application of the registered sex offender status. If he was having sex with a 12 year old I wont argue that was wrong. But it was teenage hormones and very poor judgment. There is almost certainly nothing in this incident that would indicate he is a risk to commit forcible rape or molest a child at a later age.

Yet he will pop up in the database right along with the 40 year old man who molested his 8 year old nephew and the 50 year old who surfs the net looking for 16 year old girls. It is not remotely how the designation should be used.

Today the guy goes to prison.

Agree 100% with the statements of the sexual predator label being applied to someone in this situation. I worked at Childrens Services for 10 years and dealt with countless situations similar to this one, wehre a 16-17 year old gets strung up for having sex with a more than willing 12-13 year old that you could put on a college campus and she would fit right in. Never did, and never will condone such actions, but would be very hesitant to crucify as well. Sexual predator labels should go to true pedophiles or criminal rapists who force an unwilling or underage person.

I'll use myself as an example. There are 6 years age difference between me and the Mrs. Looking back at what she looked like when she was 14-15 years old, your damn right I'd wanna get on that when I was 20-21. Realistically, that could have happened, I could have gone to prison for 2-5, registered as a sex offender, began dating her, and ultimately marrying her and having a family, and I'd still be wearing the offender tag right on my forehead.

Anyway, my best wishes to the Torrence family and glad that things turned out well for DeVoe. I'd still love to see him in the S&G, but more importantly, would love to see him see this whole ordeal as a learning experience, and LEARN from it. DeVoe has his whole life in front of him, and it should be a very good one if he chooses the right paths.

Peace.

RAPE TRIAL Judge David E. Stucki listens as Massillon police detective Bobby Grizzard testifies at DeVoe Torrence's trial Wednesday in Stark County Family Court. Torrence hopes to play college football after being acquitted of a juvenile rape allegation involving a 12-year-old girl. REPOSITORY JULIE

CANTON A one-time Ohio State recruit from Massillon hopes to resume his dream of playing college football now that he has been cleared of a rape charge involving a 12-year-old girl.

Stark County Family Court Judge David E. Stucki ruled there was not enough evidence to convict DeVoe J. Torrence following a one-day trial.

Torrence, 18, and his family rejoiced after the ruling, hugging and shaking a Bible outside the courtroom.

"God is good," a family friend exclaimed. At least one family member wailed.

"I feel great," a smiling Torrence said afterward.

The former Washington High School running back denied having sex with the sixth-grade girl at his house Sept. 23.

He was one of a dozen teenagers charged in March for sexual conduct allegations involving three girls, ages 12 to 14. The other cases have been resolved.

None of the defendants forced, threatened or coerced the girls. The charges were based solely on the girls' ages.

"He has a chance to redeem his life, to put his life back together," said Torrence's stepfather, Joe Waters.

The Buckeyes pulled their full-ride scholarship offer in January due to unspecified off-the-field issues. It is unclear if the rape allegation contributed to lost scholarship.

Torrence said he plans to contact colleges and let them know he is now available to play football.

"I liked Ohio State. But, unfortunately, I wasn't able to go there," he said. "Hopefully, another school will pick me up."

CANTON, OH ? Former Massillon Tiger football star DeVoe Torrence has a message he wants to send to major college programs: he?s available.
Torrence, a former Ohio State University recruit, was found not delinquent ? the juvenile equivalent of not guilty ? of rape Wednesday in Stark County Family Court by Judge David Stucki. The charge alleged Torrence had sex with a 12-year-old girl last September. In Ohio, having sex with someone under the age of 13 is considered rape.

?I feel great,? Torrence said minutes after his acquittal.
Torrence, who paid homage to the Buckeyes by wearing a dark red shirt and silver tie, said he?s ready to move on with his life.

?It?s been hard. I just put my faith in God,? Torrence said. ?The type of person they were portraying me to be was not true. I felt pretty confident coming in.?

Torrence faced the possibility of a minimum of one year in a state juvenile prison if he had been convicted. He also would have been required to register as a sex offender for life. Torrence was tried in juvenile court because he was 17 at the time.

After the verdict was read, a flood of emotions spilled over into tears, hugs and shouts of ?praise to God? among Torrence?s family.

?I?m just excited, you know, that DeVoe can get his life back,? said Wanda Perrin, DeVoe?s mother. ?I?d like to see him go on to college and play football. This has been tough. There?s been a lot of stress and strain. I think it?s going to make him a stronger person.?

Vindication was the word Joe Waters, Torrence?s father, used to describe his reaction to the judge?s verdict.

?I think he?ll make better judgments and not put himself in that position again,? Waters said. ?Sometimes celebrity status can hurt you. I think he was targeted because he was on the front cover of a magazine.?
In issuing his ruling, Stucki said prosecutors failed to prove their case and cited a lack of credibility in the victim?s testimony.

?I did nothing with her,? Torrence said.

The victim and a second girl allegedly went upstairs to Torrence?s bedroom during a party at his home after he had fallen asleep. Justin Turner, a teammate of Torrence?s, had introduced Torrence to the girls earlier in the evening.

?I had dozed off for maybe 10 or 15 minutes and then they came knocking on the door,? Torrence said. ?We didn?t go to the bed or nothing like that.?
Turner testified that Torrence showed him a condom following the alleged incident.

Torrence said Turner was mistaken.

?He must have been speaking about another time,? he testified.

Source: Devoe Torrence to join team

A reliable source tells me that Devoe Torrence, the nation?s No. 6 athlete who was recently acquitted of rape charges, will join the Zips for fall camp which starts Sunday.
If true, Torrence would be the most touted recruit ever to play for Akron. He had scholarship offers from Ohio State, Michigan and other BCS schools before his legal issues arose. Torrence committed to Ohio State, but never signed a letter of intent in February because the Buckeyes retracted their scholarship offer.
Torrence was charged with having sex with a 12-year-old girl. The judge declared that evidence was lacking, mainly because the victim admitted her tendency to lie.
Torrence, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, played running back at Massillon Washington High School. Although some colleges felt he?d make a terrific linebacker, Torrence was slated to play running back for the Buckeyes, too.

Scholarship awarded to DeVoe Torrence

One newcomer of note for the University of Akron football team is former Canton South and Massillon standout DeVoe Torrence, a summer signee who was ranked one of the top prospects in the nation last year.

Torrence played three years at South before transferring to Massillon as a senior. Before his final high school season, he orally committed to join his brother, Devon, at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes rescinded their offer when Torrence's name surfaced as part of a scandal involving Massillon student-athletes allegedly having sex with underage girls.

In early July, Torrence was found not guilty of all charges. He then accepted a scholarship offer from Brookhart.

''We always stayed in contact with him,'' Brookhart said. The coach added that Torrence was not signed in the fall because of the alleged incident, but ''the United States declared him innocent.''

Brookhart said talks with Torrence, his family and others led to his signing.

''He came in with his mother and brother. We sat down and had a lengthy discussion,'' Brookhart said. ''We were comfortable with him. We investigated him and we feel very good about him.''

Torrence, 6-foot-2, 210-pounds, took part in the Zips' first workout of the season Monday.

I've heard alot of GREAT things coming out of Akron visitors lately. I hear the campus is coming along very nice and the stadium is going to be a huge addition to the program. The campus used to just be in the thick of everything but now I guess the campus is pretty closed off from the town itself now so it feels more like a College Campus.

I can definately see Akron pulling in some talent such as Torrence or maybe those tweener between BCS/Mid Major recruits.
