'08 OH RB/LB Devoe Torrence (Akron signee, transfer to ??)

I was just reading a past article about Devoe, after his Pitt combine, where he talks about he and Devon wearing jerseys with "D.Torrence" on the back. Do they need their whole names? And, could they each wear th same number, say #22, since one plays offense and one pays defense? They could play some mind games on people with that... :).
Don't know about the names, but they could wear the same jersey #. Just not 22...

Well, yeah obviously not #22 with that being Horvath's and all. I just think it would be pretty cool unless the staff wants to use Devon at WR occasionally or both on special teams.

By Bill Greene...Devoe talks about being at Massillon and his goals for the upcoming season. Also talks about which schools are still recruiting him (nothing to worry about there) and the other commits/recruits he talks to.

The numbers speak for themselves. Devoe Torrence carried the ball ten times 112 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 11.2 yards a carry. His first TD came when he took a handoff to the right, slipped a tackle in the backfield, reversed field and beat the entire defense down the left sideline, striding over the last attempted tackle at the goal line. His acceleration once he has the ball is uncanny and it?s easy to see why Ohio State has already offered.

There?s certainly no question what the offense can do, especially with the three-headed monster of K.J. Herring, Torrence and Justin Turner running the ball. All three backs had at least one scoring run of at least 50 yards, including nifty runs by both Turner and Torrence where they started one way, stopped on a dime, reversed field and ran for a long score.

?We have some tailbacks, there?s no question about that,? Stacy said. ?The thing with DeVoe is, he just has to learn how to be an ?I? tailback. He?s used to playing in the spread, and he?s not used to hitting those seams out of the I. Once he gets that down, he?s going to be light?s out.?

Torrence finished the night with three scores, two of which came in the controlled portion, on runs of 53-, 7- and 17-yards. Herring broke off a 50-yard touchdown run, while Turner scored from 63-yards out. Kevin Massey also caught a 17-yard touchdown pass for the Tigers from Chris Willoughby.

Three star backs draw crowds
Monday, August 20, 2007

Three star running backs should prove to be big draws at the box office of Stark County football theaters this fall. Massillon's DeVoe Torrence, Perry's Eric Magnacca and Jackson's Carlin Isles make up one of the best crops of senior running backs this county has seen in some time.

Devoe Torrence

Yes, the product of Canton South High School made headlines this year when he transferred to Massillon. But he made those headlines because he is one of the best players in Ohio this season.

Kind of OT, but how big is Carlin Isles? His speed is pretty sick. Could he be anything like Yamon Figurs, rookie WR/return man for the Ravens (who seems to have the dropsies every time Troy throws it to him). He was the fastest guy at the NFL combine.

Torrence leads Tigers to victory
Saturday, August 25, 2007
By Todd Porter

MASSILLON On a night as warm as a kitten's purr, Tom Stacy had a litter. Before night's end, Washington High School's head football coach watched cubs grow into Tigers.

No one felt more welcome in the jungle that is Paul Brown Tiger Stadium than DeVoe Torrence. The new kid on the block - Torrence transferred to Massillon from Division III Canton South - had to wait to taste the Tiger experience. When Torrence finally hit the end zone midway through the third quarter, he felt like a bonafide Tiger and more than 10,000 Massillon fans showed appreciation.

Never mind that after Massillon pasted Middletown, 42-21, Torrence didn't know the words to his new alma mater.

"Hey DeVoe, just wave your arms," someone said.

"I didn't know all the words. I didn't know most of the words," said Torrence, who ran the ball 20 times for 157 yards. "I didn't know about the fireworks, either. I ain't never saw fireworks at a high school football game."

I was at the Tigers/Middies game tonight... Frankly Devoe look amazing in my opinion. Once they stopped trying to run everything up the middle (Middletown had 9 in the freakin box) Devoe was able to make something happen. The Tiger linemen did a decent job, but they were undersized with the Middies DL being larger.

Something that won't show on the stats is the 30+ yard bubble screen that went for a touchdown. However there was a noticeable yet insignificant hold (You could see the jersey stretch so you had to call it, but it didn't look like it slowed the kid from my vantage) that got the played called back. The run on that screen might have been his most impressive of the night. He showed great hip movement and initial accelaration.

He was having a problem following blockers, only because he was so much quicker. I know there is no official time for him but I'd estimate probably 4.4-4.5 as far as looking at game speed. A good first game for him at Massillon.

And just to clarify. I am not a Massillon Tiger fan. Yes I do love good football, but this is not written with a home team bias, and I really tried to watch it as an impartial football fan

Massilon got off to a rough start against Hamilton who ran the 4 4 D (which they definitely had the talent to run)But in the 3rd Quarter they got the O rolling.

Torrence is a workhorse and the Massillon people are absolutely ecstatic about him. 4th Q - He was taken to the locker room and his parents were called in which looked bad but it was just cramping and he returned to the sideline.

They also have a live game streaming talk show after the game. Next week they will broadcast from Rockne's. You can call in 330-388-3197.
