'08 FL CB Patrick Johnson (LSU signee)

Top-rated DB recruit tackles ACT again- NOLA.com

LSU's top-rated football recruit, cornerback Patrick Johnson of Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Fla., said he still plans to join the Tigers even though he was unable to begin school this week as expected after his ACT score was questioned by the NCAA.

Johnson, the nation's top-rated defensive back and No. 2 overall defensive prospect by Rivals.com, said he took the ACT again Thursday and is awaiting results in hope of registering for the spring semester by the deadline next Thursday.

"I'm still coming to LSU," Johnson said Friday via telephone from his Pompano Beach home. "(ACT officials) are trying to get me out and get everything cleared up. I was good to go regardless. I just had to take it again for the writing portion."

Johnson said he took the ACT three times before Thursday, scoring 22 in October after 16s on his first two.

Johnson said Florida, one of his top three choices (along with Florida State) before he settled on LSU, questioned his academic eligibility with the NCAA. ACT officials subsequently reviewed his test results and "flagged" the October score.

"I'm not upset," Johnson said. "Florida made an issue about the ACT score. They're cowards. They had to go behind my back. But that's OK. We play them this year (on Oct. 11 at Florida)."

Johnson, who committed to LSU on Jan. 5, had expected to arrive in Baton Rouge by Wednesday to begin taking classes and participate in spring practice with an eye toward earning a spot on the two-deep depth chart.

If Johnson does not meet Thursday's registration deadline, he still can sign with LSU on Feb. 6, national signing day, in anticipation of joining the Tigers in the fall.

"Everything is going to be cleared up," Johnson said.

That really is sad for urban to do that...he is quickly becoming known as the scumbag of the sec, and that is by all the teams, not just lsu. Brent Beard from rivals said that the Florida coaches were bragging about flagging PJ's score. It is wrong to put your agenda ahead of the wellbeing of the kids. I'd like to hear gatorubet's opinion on the situation as he seems like one of the few classy gator fans but doubt he'll read this thread.

Didn't hear that, most say that going from a 16 to a 22 should be flagged because that is very hard to do. I say not if you finally study for it. Sounds like they only wanted him to redo the written portion anyway and he will be able to enroll this spring reguardless. All of these short term gains that Urban is goiing for are going to hurt him in the long run though imo, because is going to burn some bridges with area high schools with all of these shenanigans.

I studied my butt off from junior to senior year and only improved by 1. 16 to 22 isn't unbelievable but it would be a huge jump.

What to what did your score go? If it went from like 27 to 28 then that's understandable, at the higher scores it's a lot harder to improve your score by a lot. But at the lower scores you can improve tremendously from one test to another just by taking a Kaplan or Princeton Review course for example.

A 22 to a 23. Another question is if that's the composite score or with Writing? With Writing my score was a 26 but unfortunately that is not taken into consideration by colleges for some odd reason. Another shame of the ACT is that it doesn't include history (or the writing), which was my best subject. Anyways, enough about how bad the ACT sucks...what really sucks is Uran Liar reporting the score. I highly doubt he did that before he knew Johnson was picking LSU. It is certainly possible for Patrick to raise his score that much and hopefully he can get that kind of score when he re-takes it.

Do all parts of the country take the ACT? I only took the SAT.

Just about every school will accept either but certain parts of the country seem to prefer different tests. When I was recruited by some California schools for wrestling, they all wanted me to take the SAT. Depends on where you live it seems.

Thanks for the nice words. Much like Nigerian bank stories, this one is a hot rumor. There is simply no proof that UF got his record flagged as sour grapes. One, he is not that important to burn bridges. Two, PJ saying "UF flagged me" is not possible. His 6 point increase is an auto flag, no matter what we did. Third, and I can not answer this, there is no way that UF lets an EE come in with a 6 point ACT jump when the kid in question fails his fcat (Florida h.s. required graduation test) and then jumps from a 16 percentile to a 65 percentile on a test he suddently takes away from home.

I am sorry, but if you believe that we'd go around in public chuckling about torpedoing some high school kid then we'd be dumb enough to not suceed in recruting at all. We do well. Urban is liked. Assuming he is ***** enough, he is not dumb enough.

I won't turn this into another flame Urban Meyer fest. I'll just say LSU fans are extremely happy with getting Patrick Johnson because we needed a top level CB in this class to replace two outstanding senior CBs (Jackson and Zenon). With him, Jai Eugene, Phelon Jones and some other young guys, we should be set at that position, which is a tough position to recruit.

As for the ACT question, I believe it is more of a southern thing. At least based on my experience, most of the southern schools I applied to had the option of giving ACT or SAT scores, and most of the northern ones required SAT.
