BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana senior forward Kyle Taber will undergo surgery on his knee Wednesday and is expected to be out for 10 weeks.
Coach Tom Crean said Tuesday that Taber injured the knee last week.
Neither the nature of Taber's injury nor which knee was injured was disclosed.

2008-09 Big Ten Basketball Crystal Ball

By Corrie Trouw

It's the first week of autumn. Across the Northeast and Midwest, leaves are changing. The air is getting its first hints of crispness. The first conference football matchups hit Big Ten campuses this weekend. So this is a perfect time to take a look into the crystal ball and see how the Big Ten will shape up ... on the hardwood.
Believe it or not, college hoops practice starts up next month. So let's take a break from hearing from SEC fans about how weak our conference is on the gridiron and look forward to November ? when we can hear from ACC fans how they've owned the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Here are my predictions for the Big Ten roundball season.

1. Michigan State will miss graduated Drew Neitzel much more than anyone thinks. The Spartans can talk-up their rebounding and toughness all they want, but it was amazing how many mistakes No. 11's sharpshooting covered up. Tom Izzo always brings in highly rated recruiting classes, but the Spartans will not evolve into a national title threat because they will miss having a reliable go-to guy.

2. For the third year in a row, Ohio State will pin its hopes on a seven-foot freshman. The next in the line of Thad Matta blue-chippers, center B.J. Mullens, is probably a little closer to Kosta Koufos than Greg Oden in the immediate impact department, but the 2008-09 Buckeyes have a much stronger supporting cast returning than what Koufos worked with in 2007-08. The exodus of Mike Conley, Jr. and Daequan Cook, along with Oden and some key seniors, left the cupboard relatively bare for Matta last year. This year, David Lighty and Evan Turner return and will propel the defending NIT-champs to a first-round win in the big tournament.

Pretty good article and I agree with the author stating the fact that MSU will miss Neitzel more than anyone thinks.

I do not think that the writer is giving Mullens enough credit because he will be more of a force around the basket then KK was during this past season especially on defense.

He doesn't even write about Purdue which I think is a mistake and I'm not sure if Indiana will even make it to the NIT.

He makes some good points but I just don't think it gives the Big 10 much credit. I guess we shall see.

Michigan State, Purdue and Wisconsin should be considered the favorites to compete for the title........tOSU has a question mark at point guard.......if we can get solid play, we could make a run this year.........Indiana will be lucky to make the NIT with that group.........Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Iowa, Penn State and Minnesota are all rebuilding..........

I think you could lump Indiana with the final six. I don't even see them making the NIT this year. Bloomington is not going to be a very happy place this coming season.

Agree with your assessment on the Buckeyes. I think if we knew how our PG was going to play we would be able to better judge if the team could make a serious run at the championship. I just don't see us beating MSU or Purdue. I think we have a shot at sliding past Wisconsin.

Expectations low at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Kyle Taber spent last October sitting quietly secluded from reporters on Indiana's media day.
Back then, the Hoosiers were considered a Big Ten favorite, a possible Final Four team and there were plenty of other big-names to tell stories.
Oh, how things have changed for Taber and his brand new teammates.
"It's a lot different," he said Wednesday. "Everyone picked us to win it last year, now everyone is picking us last. But it's a good thing because there is no pressure on you, and we know what we have to do."
Like trading phone numbers and learning names, studying coach Tom Crean's scaled back playbook and getting acclimated to a different practice style.

wow - just looking at the pics in ozone of the team...

BJ is huge! Dallas Lauderdale looks about 6 4 next to him....

Read a nice article in Dispatch I think it was... about the team chemistry this year, how the guys are all living in the same dorm, etc.

For basketball, that's great chemistry. Guys who KNOW each other can adlib better.

It's going to be an awesome year for Buckeye hoops!!!!

Sorry, Bernini, but I don't see the Badgers finishing above the Buckeyes this season.

1st Team All-Big Ten

(POY) Corperryale "Manny" Harris, Michigan No way. He might be 1st team, though.
Robbie Hummel, Purdue
Raymar Morgan, Michigan State
B.J. Mullens, Ohio State Again no way. Can't put a frosh on 1st team myself (unless his initials are G. O.)
E'Twaun Moore, Purdue

2nd Team All-Big Ten

Kevin Koble, N'Western Coble is the best player on a horrific team. Can't see him as 2nd team at all. Probably replace him with Krabbenhoft.
Kalin Lucas, Michigan State I'd have Lucas on my first team.
Trevon Hughes, Wisconsin
Marcus Landry, Wisconsin
Evan Turner, Ohio State

Hard to argue with that.......
