Well, the Army All American game is on January 6th, and OSU's Winter quarter begins on the 3rd. Last year, the winter quarter started on January 3rd, and I believe the game was played on the 8th; so it wouldn't be unheard of.

he could enroll in spring qtr also, keep in mind that theosu is on quarters not semesters, so two grading periods are left after the first of the year in the academic year...

Wells enrolled for Spring quarter last year... not winter (according to OSU bio). ditto for Coleman. Rose wasn't early at all... that's how he was able to play in the N-S game.
