'07 OH DE Ben Martin (Tennessee signee)

Ya, I wasn't there this year, but my boys from Elder and Moeller who were there told me that they had their QB still throwing the ball late in the game with a big lead and that's how the kid got hurt.

Go Bucks!!! In Tress We Trust.
Yup. I was with a bunch of LaSalle parents after the game Saturday and they were all scratching their heads why he was in the game that late. Sure enough the kid gets hit hard and goes down. The parents are pissed at the coaching staff for that screw up. No reason to have him in when you are up that big.

These are just a tiny FEW noteable football players from the GCL that did NOT go to Catholic universities.

Ben Marin is a flat out stud...he's going to play on Sundays in six or so years...he's a MUST get for the Buckeyes, IMO....

and, no, LaSalle is not dismal...just their coaching staff...ask Tyler Sheehan about that...:roll2:
OK, I understand there are players from Cincy Catholic schools that went to OSU and other non Catholic schools. Yet I went to St. X. Everyone of the staff there pushes Jesuit Universities bigtime. Other Catholic Universities next. I went to Ohio St. for a good education for the money, but I definately thought about Georgetown because of my teachers and advisors. It happens. I know plenty of guys that went to Jesuit Universities simply due to the fact that they were Jesuit. I also know plenty of guys that went to Catholic Universities because of their faith. The schools really push it, and it cannot be discounted. It just makes me think because I know the situation. May not be true in this case, and people make up their own mind. Yet it is still a factor.

Martin stands 6'5 and is lean, he can put on some weight at the next level. Reportedly runs a 4.6 forty. Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas and Cincy are a few of his favorite schools. Ben has no offers at this point.

LaSalle will play Clayton Northmont (OSU verbal Kurt Coleman) this Friday.

Northmont (1-0) vs. Cin. La Salle (1-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Lancer Stadium

2004 result: Did not play.

Outlook: Instead of a showdown against La Salle QB Tyler Sheehan, Northmont's Clay Belton will trade passes with junior Brian Jacob. That's because Sheehan (152 yards and four TD passes) broke his collarbone late in a 35-7 win over Sycamore. While Sheehan sits 8-10 weeks, Jacob will try to lead the Lancers back to the playoffs. Jacob will throw to Michael Reed, who had five catches for 97 yards against Sycamore. Lancers FB Bobby Burger (6-3, 235) and TB Isacc Green combined for about 200 yards. Northmont won its 10th straight regular-season game by defeating C-J 28-14. Belton had four TD passes and 347 yards passing and while A.J. Combest had 72 yards rushing. DB/WR Kurt Coleman was slowed by an ankle injury but should be near top form. Belton will want to stay away from DE Ben Martin, who had two of the Lancers' five sacks last week.

The Brian Jacob era at La Salle opened with a resounding thud Friday, as the Lancers, No. 7 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, were drilled by Clayton Northmont.

Jacob, a junior quarterback, was 3-for-11 passing for only 36 yards and three interceptions. Jacob is playing in place of Tyler Sheehan, who will be out six to eight weeks after breaking his collarbone last week.

But with Northmont's Clay Belton torching the Lancers for 341 yards and six touchdown passes, quarterback was the least of La Salle's concerns.

"Tonight we got beat by a better team," said La Salle coach Tom Grippa. "They just kicked our butt."

The Thunderbolts (2-0) jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead on four touchdown passes from Belton.

The 6-foot-6 lefty authored a 16-play, 76-yard scoring drive to open the game before a pair of catch-and-runs from 56 and 36 yards.

Northmont's Justin Watkins had 11 catches for 195 yards and a score, while A.J. Combest (six catches for 45 yards) and Andy Wittman (five for 93 yards) had two touchdowns each.

The Bolts' offensive line did a fine job of keeping LaSalle defensive end Ben Martin off of Belton.

"We've never been in fear of the Cincinnati schools," said coach Lance Schneider. "La Salle's a great team, I know they're hurting a little bit, but ... our kids just executed the game plan to perfection on both sides of the ball."

The Bolts didn't punt until the final 30 seconds of the third quarter, while Jacob didn't complete a pass until the fourth quarter.

The lone bright spot for La Salle was senior fullback Bobby Burger, who had 14 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown.

"I thought our offense would do more, and we didn't," said Grippa. "They shocked us with their offense, and once we got behind, we weren't ready to come from behind."

Xenia at La Salle

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today at La Salle HS, 3091 North Bend Road.

RECORDS: Xenia 2-0, La Salle 1-1.

WHAT TO WATCH: La Salle will rely on RBs Bobby Burger (173 yards, one TD) and Isaac Green (167 yards, one TD) while QB Brian Jacob gets acclimated. Jacob was intercepted three times in last week's 42-7 loss to Clayton Northmont, which was La Salle's first game without injured regular QB Tyler Sheehan (broken collarbone). Xenia has beaten Hamilton 48-0 and Piqua 26-14. Last week, Xenia's Stanten Hall rushed for 117 yards, two scores and had 280 all-purpose yards.

BOTTOM LINE: La Salle must be productive throwing the ball, or it could be another tough night.

La Salle 14, Xenia 7

La Salle held off a late Xenia drive, making a stand on the Lancers' 35-yard line before running out the clock.

Lancers running back Isaac Green had 20 carries for 74 yards.

La Salle quarterback Brian Jacobs took the first snap of the game and ran 79 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for the Lancers' 34-0 win over Louisville Butler Friday night.

Jacobs, a junior, finished with 110 yards rushing on 10 carries and 51 yards passing on five completions, including one for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

The Lancers, ranked No. 9 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, forced four turnovers and held Butler to 112 yards. Butler drove deep into La Salle territory in the first quarter but was halted on third-and-goal when senior linebacker Matt Flamm intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Elder at La Salle

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today at La Salle HS, 3091 North Bend Road.
RECORDS: Elder 2-2 (0-0 GCL-S), La Salle 3-1 (0-0).

WHAT TO WATCH: Elder allowed 471 total yards in last week's 34-17 home loss to Lakewood St. Edward. Offensively, Panthers QB Nick Zeiser accounted for 194 total yards. Elder must tighten up defensively, especially with La Salle QB Tyler Sheehan (Bowling Green recruit) returning. Sheehan broke a collarbone in the season opener. La Salle junior QB Brian Jacob has started in Sheehan's absence. Last week, Jacob rushed for 110 yards and one TD and threw for 51 yards and another TD in a 34-0 win at Louisville Butler.

BOTTOM LINE: La Salle has not beaten Elder since 1992. The Lancers believe they can break through this time, but Elder holds the psychological edge of 12 straight wins in this series.

Tyler Sheehan stood in the pouring rain at midfield, more than happy to take countless postgame slaps on his shoulder pads.

The La Salle senior quarterback returned from his much-publicized broken collarbone Friday night, and led the Lancers to a resounding 40-20 rout of Greater Catholic League South rival Elder.

Sheehan completed 11-of-18 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed six times for 77 yards and another score. Rain started falling late in the game, but La Salle was pretty much in control after building a 20-13 halftime lead.

La Salle senior wide receiver Mike Reed caught 10 of Sheehan's passes for 230 yards himself and scored four touchdowns (three receiving, one rushing).

It was La Salle's first win over Elder since 1992, as the city's No. 6-ranked Lancers beat No. 5 Elder before a standing-room crowd of about 7,500 at La Salle. La Salle students raced out of their end zone seats and mobbed their players afterward, notably Sheehan.

"All I heard was people saying, 'He's not coming back, he's not coming back,' '' Sheehan said. "I wanted to prove I could do it. Nobody thought we could beat Elder, but we knew we could."

Sheehan, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior who has committed to Bowling Green, is rated by most scouts as the top senior quarterback in Cincinnati.
Sheehan broke his collarbone in a 35-7 win over Sycamore in a season opener Aug. 27. Sheehan threw for 152 yards and four touchdowns in that game, and had missed three straight games before returning to the lineup Friday. He had been projected to miss as much as eight games, but only missed three with aggressive rehabilitation.

Sheehan and Reed, the two offensive stars, were also quick to credit La Salle's defense. La Salle held Elder to just 56 yards rushing, while the Lancers rushed for 205 yards.

"It's the best feeling in the world to finally beat Elder," Reed said. "We came in with a lot of confidence. This one was won by everyone, from the guys that started down to the guys who didn't play. We were all ready."

Overall, La Salle (4-1, 1-0 GCL-S) held a 443-341 edge in total yards as the Lancers generally had their way in the trenches.

"They just played better," Elder coach Doug Ramsey said. "They caught the ball, they ran it, they blocked, they tackled. We've just got to get better."
La Salle coach Tom Grippa, who beat La Salle many times himself as Elder coach himself from 1987-96, got his first win over the Panthers in three years as Lancers coach.

"Look at that," Grippa said, as La Salle students stormed onto the field afterward. "We don't get to do that much here. I've won some games in my time, so the people I'm happiest for our students and our alumni."

Of Sheehan, Grippa said, "Number 7 is pretty good, isn't he? He makes a difference."

Elder senior quarterback Nick Zeiser was himself outstanding, completing 16-of-26 throws for 227 yards and three touchdowns (two to Jake McQuaide). But La Salle generally played mistake-free football.

La Salle at Moeller

WHEN/WHERE: 2 p.m. Saturday at Lockland Stadium, 249 West Forrer Avenue.

RECORDS: La Salle 4-1 (1-0 GCL-S), Moeller 4-1 (0-0).

WHAT TO WATCH: La Salle comes off a 40-20 rout of Elder. Quarterback Tyler Sheehan threw three TD passes and ran for another, with WR Mike Reed catching three TD throws and scoring another on a 5-yard run. La Salle's defense got five combined sacks from Ben Martin and Vince Harris. Moeller comes off a 47-7 win over Henderson County (Ky.). Junior Ryan Morris replaced senior Pat Redwine at QB last week, and Redwine caught five passes as a receiver. Morris (sprained ankle) is probable, with sophomore Ross Oltorik in the wings.

BOTTOM LINE: Moeller is 39-3 all-time against La Salle. The Lancers are riding high, but Moeller is always tough for La Salle.
