Did we really just lose a big time recruit to Rutgers?
Let me say that again, Rutgers?
Hometown team or not...Rutgers??????????

They must have done a great job on selling him on the idea of being the cornerstone of this recruiting class which is being billed as the first great recruiting class in recent memory as Schiano is trying to capitalize on this past season. One thing I can never fault a kid for is staying home. What blows me away is the sheer number of kids this year who point blank told the staff they wanted to be Buckeyes and then have changed their minds as we approach NLOID. That to me is the most troubling part...I can think of 6 kids off the top of my head who planned on being Buckeyes who will likely be signing elsewhere.

in your opinion, how much of this is due to the staff dropping the ball, tressel's approach (not to force; let them evaluate), and just normal decision changes?

part of it comes with the territory which is why the staff doesn't sweat this stuff 1/100th as much as we Internet recruitniks do. part of it also has to do with the OSU philosophy that the best players down the road come from kids that want to be Buckeyes and want to buy into the team philosophy. kids that want to announce at the AA game? those kids by their very nature are in conflict with the JT approach to recruiting. so will I ever expect to have a big celebration during the AA game? probably not. but is this a sign that JT can't recruit or JT can't close. I don't believe it is at all.

Initially I admit I did not like the approach of encouraging kids look around prior to becoming Bucks but now I do as "the proof is in the pudding". If AD or BM or anybody's heart is at Rutgers, Tennesee, or wherever I would not want them to feel forced into becoming a Buck just because your coach could be a good car salesman. As far as the proof, we have kids that want to represent tOSU and we have less transfers, less off and on field issues, less egos, and less discontent. Does it still dissapoint me that we lose certain kids, it does but it goes with the Tressel and current Buckeye philosophy. Not all kids want to go to places that they are expected to fall in line!

But, it still blows my mind we couldn't close on a 5-star recruit when we were up against Rutgers.

Distance is the #1 factor so this should blow anyone's mind...

What blows my mind, again, is the sheer number of kids who are given the fact by JT and the staff, are allowed to make a decision with no pressure, tell the staff they want to be Buckeyes, and the sucumb to the tactics of other coaches who tend to either negatively recruit or sell a bill of goods.

Bottomline is this: Davis did commit to tOSU. That is why tOSU stopped O-Line recruiting. Davis and Malcolm Jenkins did talk about his verbal. Davis gave everyone every indication that he would be going to tOSU, right up until he stepped off the plane in S.A... Maybe there is something in the water they serve down there, because we have had awful luck with guys we were leading for or that were committed before they got down there...

Yep we had 4 Buckeyes that stepped off the plane in Davis, Martin, Wright, and Clifford. Within a couple of days, we now only have Clifford and can hopefully hold on to Wright. OSU22 and the rest of the posters here have been dead on but a couple of recruits changed their minds last minute and there is nothing that can be done about it.
