20 days in May

Monday, May 01, 2006
Nobody does high school spring football quite like Florida.
Beginning today, coaches have 20 days this month to conduct practices, scrimmages and games. For the players, thankfully those first three days are limited to practice drills in shorts.

</td></tr></tbody></table> <!--begintext--> New names with talent and ambition will emerge. Depth charts will be formed — and many will have second thoughts about spending their May in the blazing sun.
Those practice fields will be packed again today — but minus some of the big names from the past.
Palm Beach Post offensive player of the year Emanuel Cook won't be there, but teammate Alex Wood will be running and sweating.
Pahokee quarterback Robert Love is gone, but Atlantic's Chivas Jones, a transfer from Tennessee, may make them all soon forget.
And of course, Glades Central will be on the field, led by budding superstar Deonte Thompson, one of the nation's top prospects.
You'll be hearing all about them in the fall, but here's a quick look at some of the next big names to remember:
Deonte Thompson, Glades Central
By now, Glades Central's speedy wide receiver, Deonte Thompson, is used to the hype that surrounds him.
Last season, he was the only junior selected for The Palm Beach Post's pre-season Super 11. Now the buzz has gone national, as Thompson already is rated as one of the top wide receiver recruits in the country.
Thompson, listed at 6 feet, 190 pounds, said he is excited for his final season of high school football — and the recruiting process — and now only wants to be able to get back on the field.
Thompson, who has clocked consistent 4.28 times in the 40-yard dash at combines, strained his right hamstring during track season and had to sit out of the Raiders' final meets, including Saturday's state meet in Jacksonville. Thompson was there as a relay alternate, and watched Union County's C.J. Spiller, the state's top running back recruit last season, win the 100 and 200 meters, races Thompson was favored to win before his injury.
As the recruiting battle for Thompson begins in earnest this month — he said he already has offers from at least 20 schools, including Southern California, Notre Dame, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State — the receiver said he will carry with him an important lesson learned while relegated to the sidelines.
"Nothing is guaranteed," Thompson said. "I can learn a lot from this year. I've just got to get healthy and stay healthy."
