'06 NY DE McKenzie Mathews (Pitt signee, transfer to Div-II Bentley College)

Not being a *$#&, but can you expand on that a little bit as to why you think that. I looked at the available scholarships and who is coming in, it seems we have room for him IMO.

We took 3 DEs last year, plus Rose and Dublin (who is very similar to Matthews) this year: there's only so many players you can take at a position. Plus, we've already filled 14 spots and still have Small, Browning, McCarthy/Gibson, Olson, maybe Troutman and another WR/S (Gant/Johnson/Lyons) to come. It may not be impossible at this point, but the door is closing very fast for Matthews to become a Buckeye.

we took 3 DE's last year and have dublin & rose coming in this year. i think there are greater needs than taking a 3rd DE. if you look at it we have a limited # of schollies left to give this year and a number of quality players at positions of greater need vying for them. it may have been a case of first come-first serve between matthews and dublin.

If you look at the overall #'s, then yes we have room. But if you look at the D-Line recruits, we already have Larimore, Rose, and Dublin on board and are in great shape with Johnnie Troutman. Troutman will most likely grow into a DT, so that would give us Troutman and Larimore at DT and Rose and Dublin at DE. I don't think we are going to take 5 D-Lineman in this class, especially with the needs we have elsewhere. I think we were done with DE recruiting when Dublin verballed this week. With taking 3 DE's last year, I wouldn't expect them to take 3 again this year. Troutman is a David Patterson type guy (DE/DT), and it's because of that versatility that I think they would want him over Mathews.

Mathews also had some academic issues that needed to be cleaned up - maybe those are still affecting his recruitment, or maybe he simply lost interest in OSU in the mean time (or vice versa).

it's tough to imagine another reason that a kid went from singing Carmen, Ohio to not even considering OSU...
