'06 IN PF Jamil Tucker (Virginia Verbal)

I'd love to bring in Tucker...

- #14 PF in the country
- He is a good PF whose stock is rising (for those that don't know, we need a 4 to round out the Thad 5)
- Lance Thomas/Thaddeus Young are still longshots and are much riskier to wait on than taking a solid PF like tucker
- It would be good to bring in at least one player who wouldn't be good enough to go pro after a year or two... so that Matta doesn't have to rebuild quite as quickly
- another Spiece AAU star 07 #1 SG Eric Gordon has been waivering thinking he would not be able to see the floor at OSU... but assuming Cook goes pro in 07 it would be helpful to have yet another Spiece star to try and lure Gordon on board.

Luke Harangody and Jamil Tucker could be part of a basketball power at Ohio State, and Tucker said the decision of other star players to join that school could impact his selection.

The Indianapolis Star reported Lawrence North teammates Greg Oden — the USA Today National Player of the Year — and Mike Conley were planning to verbally commit to Ohio State.

The pair of players, who have won two straight Class 4A state championships, will make an official announcement on Wednesday.

Tucker said Oden’s and Conley’s decision has put Ohio State at the top of his list.

“It helps, knowing they’ll be there. It makes it easier going there. And I still do want to go there,” said Tucker, who plays with Oden and Conley on their Spiece Indy Heat AAU team and was offered a scholarship by the Buckeyes.

Harangody didn’t feel as strongly about Oden’s and Conley’s choice, but said Ohio State could become a national power.

“That really has no effect on my decision, but I wouldn’t mind playing with those guys,” Harangody said. “We talked about going to Ohio State together and about coach (Thad) Matta’s vision, but I don’t think it will have any effect on my decision.”

Harangody, the Post-Tribune Player of the Year after averaging 23.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game as a junior, said he did not know when he would make a final decision. Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame and Northwestern have offered scholarships to the 6-foot-7 center.

West Side coach John Boyd said he hopes Tucker will choose a school by the end of July. Indiana, Arizona, San Jose State, USC and Miami are among the several schools that have offered a scholarship to Tucker, a 6-9 guard/forward who averaged 18.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg and 4.7 apg for the regional-champion Cougars. Tucker said Purdue is not on his list of schools.

“(Regarding Ohio State), there were some things on the table a while ago, but he’s got a number of schools looking at him now,” Boyd said. “He and his family are going to come to a decision.”
Oden, a center, is the only other junior besides LeBron James to win the National Player of the Year award, while Conley is considered one of the nation’s top point guards. Oden had been considered a possible No. 1 pick in the NBA draft until the implementation a league rule change last week requiring players to be at least one year out of high school to be drafted.

I am under the impression that he still does have an offer...

FWIW, Scout doesn't even show us as a school of interest for Tucker.
That really doesn't suprise me......

The more I look at Tucker, the more I like his game when you think of how he would fit in with Oden, Cook, Lighty and Conley. Every great team has that one player who sacrifices for the good of the team and I can envision Tucker being the type of player who is a great defender and does the little things that don't make it into the stat sheet but that fans and coaches love.

I think if Matta wants Tucker......Tucker will verbal. Only time will tell and I really think the hold up is Thaddeus Young, we have a chance.....

Grad or bn44820, pardon me if this is off-topic and feel free to delete if it is, but how would you compare Tucker's game to say Lance Thomas and Thaddeus Young? Also, we're obviously in great shape with Tucker filling our power forward need, but how highly are Thomas and Young regarding OSU right now in their recruitng process and in what order would you rank the three of them? Finally, if we do take Tucker does that mean Raymar Morgan is out of the picture for being in this class? Thanks.

Tucker is a great player in his own right, but Young is the cream of the crop at PF position. Tucker is just starting to come on, his stock has risen and he had made a lot of progress and improvement in his game.

Its hard to say how high Thomas and Young have the Bucks right now, I know if we can get a visit out of Young, I think we have a shot.

If Tucker joins the class, that shuts the door on Morgan who I consider a very good player.

No Offer

Columbus Dispatch

With the commitments by juniors Greg Oden and Mike Conley to the Ohio State basketball class of 2006 this week, things are going so well for the Buckeyes that they might not have room for all the highly rated stars who want to join them.

One of the forwards the Buckeyes have been recruiting, 6-foot-9 Jamil Tucker of Gary, Ind., is ranked No. 78 in the nation by Recruiting Services Consensus Index.

Conley said he spent time with Tucker at a recent all-star game and knows how much he likes Ohio State.

"I’m not sure he’s been offered (and) that’s the only thing that would make him not come," Conley said. "I think he’s really sold on Ohio State."

It looks from this article that Tucker does not have an offer from Ohio State.

This is the stuff that really hasn't sunk in for me yet.

The #78 rated player in the country - a kid who is rated in the same general range as the best we have recruited in the past five years - might not merit an offer.
