Stafon Johnson is one of the top prospects from the West Coast. This running back prospect from LA talks about recruiting, his running style and his favorite schools.

One of the elite running back prospects in the country is Stafon Johnson from Los Angeles (Calif.) Dorsey High School. Johnson, 6-0 and 195 pounds, rushed for 1,879 yards (209 rushes) and scored 18 touchdowns. Meanwhile he is sitting on two dozen scholarship offers from some very impressive programs from coast to coast. But for now he is concentrated on track not football.
“I am in the middle of the track season,” said Johnson. “I am running the 100, 4 x 400 and 4 x 100. My best 100 is 10.78 (electronic). After track I will get back into lifting weights, jumping rope and just getting ready for the season. I am planning on camping this summer at USC and Cal. As for some other camps I am just not sure yet.”
What makes Johnson so special as a running back? Ask him and he’ll tell you it’s variety of things.
”I have good vision, speed and power. I guess you could say that I am a cross between a power guy and a speed guy. I also have a little wiggle to my game because I wasn’t always big. I had to have moves but I needed that more then.
“I also play safety. Last season I started the last two games and got 17 tackles and three interceptions. This season I hope to play both ways.”
As far as his college destination goes Johnson now says he is open where as before Southern Cal was his early leader.
“At the top it is a tight squeeze between a lot of schools. I need to sit down and think about it and I am really looking forward to the process.
”Southern Cal is a school with back-to-back titles. They have great history especially at the running back position and all those Heisman trophies. USC is running back university. Coach (Pete) Carroll is a great guy and he is all business and a great coach. If I want to make it to the next level than USC is a great place for me. They have a great coaching staff with a great spirit.
“Cal. is an up and coming school. Coach (Jeff) Tedford is a different type of guy and I like him and his staff. They have made something out of nothing. Plus, my buddy DeSean Jackson is there and some other friends.
“With UCLA it all about Coach (Eric) Bienemy. We have a great bond and so do the players with him. I mean they love him.
”Tennessee is just something different to me. They are not close but that’s OK. I am looking at some schools that are far away. But Tennessee is a national team that I am not sure about but they intrigue me. There is something about them.
”Miami is just like USC. They have great running backs in the NFL. They have so many prospects in the league. I have done my home work and they have so many first-rounders over the past ten years or so.
“I really like Urban Meyer at Florida. I also like coach Drayton. They are far away from home but that’s not a problem. I can also get a great education at Florida. Plus, Josh Portis is a California guy doing well there. “Michigan is another school with great running back tradition. That’s a school that loves to run the football. If I have to pick a school that I could see myself playing at Michigan would be one of them. I mean all the schools I have mentioned I could see myself playing there.”

Stafon Johnson of Los Angeles (CA) Dorsey is known for his electrifying runs from the tailback position, but put him on defense and he becomes a headhunter, ready to put the hammer on whoever has the football. Because he could play and excel at the next level on either side of the ball, the 6-0, 195-pounder has offers pouring in every day from the nation's elite Division I football programs.

By Don Hoekwater Columnist/Photographer
Date: May 13, 2005
Whether playing offense or defense, running back/safety Stafon Johnson of Dorsey High School in Los Angeles just wants to be on the field. With offers from big-time college football programs all over the country, will anyone be able to lure him away from Southern California? GoBlueWolverine Magazine spoke recently with Johnson to find out.

Claiming more offers than he can count, including Michigan, running back/safety Stafon Johnson lists a top five of USC, Cal, Tennessee, Miami, and Florida. Does any one stand out? "USC would have to be my favorite," Johnson said. "But that doesn't mean I'm not open to looking at other schools. I'll be going to the USC camp at the end of June."
Are the Wolverines in the mix? "I like Michigan a lot," he said. "Coach (Ron English) is a great guy and Michigan has a history of having great running backs." As a junior, the 6-foot-0, 195-pound Johnson racked up 1,879 yards on 209 carries and scored 18 touchdowns. "I played two games on defense last season," he said. "I had 18 tackles and three interceptions,"
Right now he is in the middle of track season, where he runs the 100-meters, the 4X401 and 4X400. "My best time in the 100 is 10.81," he said. "I'm the third leg on the relay teams."
Dorsey is home to some major Division 1-A talent this season. Along with Stafon Johnson, linebacker Mark Johnson has also been offered by Michigan. Offensive guard Jovon Hayes claims an offer from the Wolverines as well. Do these three talk about going to school together? "We talk about it, but each one of us is going to do what's best for us," Stafon said.
Looking for a career in the motion picture industry, Johnson said he wants to major in music engineering. He reports a 2.9 grade-point-average along with a 890 on the SAT, which he said he plans to retake.
Ed. note: Where Johnson is somewhat of a longshot for Michigan, remember that he said to Scout.com's Jamie Newburg this week: “Michigan is another school with great running back tradition. That’s a school that loves to run the football. If I have to pick a school that I could see myself playing at Michigan would be one of them. I mean all the schools I have mentioned I could see myself playing there.”
