'05 OH ATH Alex Daniels (Minnesota signee, transfer to Cincinnati)

Nevada says there's reason to keep hope alive! That's all we can do. Tell me, if he's 100% Minnesota then why visit OSU yesterday? Why take OSU calls? Why not ask OSU not to call anymore? If you think "burning bridges" is the answer, then I've got some ocean front property for ya' in Arizona. I think Nevada's words over on Bucknuts were "still in play." Let's save the doom and gloom for Gwaltney and Ashley  Go Bucks.

Daniels having a change of heart, and Wilson committing, would would make the recruiting world look very right to me. Beating Michigan, and looking great in a bowl game made the season look right. This is somehow like growing up in Cleveland and not wanting to play for the Browns.

Hey, Einstein, it's not Bucknuts' word we're listening to, but the words of Daniels himself. He said he's honoring his promise to meet with OSU coaches and nothing more. Period. Done. Finito. End of story. He will not be a Buckeye.

Now, let's see that Arizone oceanfront property you got there, Marconi...

Linebacker Alex Daniels recently stopped in at Ohio State to talk with OSU coaches, but the meeting was just to clear the air. Daniels says that Minnesota will be his college destination.

Linebacker Alex Daniels of Columbus (Oh.) Brookhaven made a commitment to Minnesota earlier in January, but a recent visit to talk with Ohio State coaches caused a bit of a stir. Alex, however, is firm in his commitment to the Gophers.

"Yeah, I went over and talked to (the OSU staff)," he said. "Everything's cool. I really did just want to go over and clear the air about everything.

"I just wanted them to understand why I made the decision I made, and I wanted to make sure we understood each other. Everything's cool... I had a good relationship with those guys, and I wanted to keep it."

Daniels already has his plans laid out for getting things going at Minnesota.

"I'm going up to Minnesota. I'll be a Will linebacker," he said. "I'm going up early, as soon as school's out. I'm going to come back to play the all-star games and then go back to school."

Daniels also emphasized that his choice was about what he felt was best for him.

"This has nothing to do with Ohio State," he said. "This is just a better fit for me personally. I really like those guys over there."

“I always get asked about position changes. Typically this time of year there aren’t many, but there are two that I will mention. Freshman D.J. Burris is a player we recruited to be an offensive lineman, but I’ve decided to start him out on defense. I’ve talked long and hard about not having the depth at running back we’ve all become accustomed to around here, so yesterday I moved Alex Daniels to running back. We have to get creative because we still want to run the football.

Daniels moves from defense to ease depth concern in backfield

DAVE CAMPBELL

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - In the early stages of fall practice, there are many areas of uncertainty on the Minnesota football team.
One of those is in the backfield, where the early departures of Laurence Maroney and Gary Russell - both 1,000-yard rushers last year - have created a concern about depth.
Amir Pinnix begins the season as the featured runner, but he missed most of the spring session because of an ankle injury. Redshirt freshman Jay Thomas has not completely recovered from offseason knee surgery, and junior college transfer Brylee Callender is still raw. Justin Valentine is the returning fullback, and he might be given some snaps at tailback as well.
"We'll have to see how they can collectively do as a group to pick up where we've performed the last couple of years," coach Glen Mason said.
Though the Gophers still believe they'll be able to run the ball effectively, even without All-Americans and four-year starters Greg Eslinger and Mark Setterstrom blocking in front, the lack of proven, durable backs is clearly one issue that Mason is facing this fall.
That's why he moved sophomore linebacker Alex Daniels across the ball. Daniels, a 6-foot-3, 260-pounder from Ohio who was a highly ranked recruit, was in line to start at the middle spot. Now, he's behind Valentine at fullback.
"We have to get creative because we still want to run the football," Mason said.
Daniels didn't suit up this spring because of a broken arm and missed valuable practice time. That's another reason why the switch made sense to Mason.
"I'm going to see if we can get him on the field and utilize his talent. ... Unless I try, I don't know," the coach said.

260-pounder in mix as Gophers search for a No. 1 tailback
Tuesday, August 15, 2006
FROM WIRE REPORTS

With less than three weeks remaining until the season opener, Minnesota still doesn’t have a No. 1 running back, coaches said after watching the first scrimmage of fall camp.
"I don’t think right now there is a No. 1," Gophers assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mitch Browning said. "If we were to start today, I think it would be a toss-up. The next two weeks there will be a lot to tell."
Browning offered no names when asked which players are in the mix for playing time.
"Right now, it’s probably, really I’m not in position to say," Browning said. "We’ve got to get two guys ready. We’ve got to get that narrowed down because we can’t get three or four or five guys ready to play."
Coaches and players continue to rave about sophomore Alex Daniels, who was moved to tailback from linebacker. Daniels is 260 pounds and runs hard, but he’s still learning the offense.
"Alex Daniels is running the hardest, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing," Gophers quarterback Bryan Cupito said. "He sometimes surprises me because he runs it up in there so hard. But he doesn’t know what he’s doing yet. I don’t think he’s just going to pick it up overnight either. I don’t know. We have to find someone."
Browning said, "There’s no question (Daniels) can help us there. Is he ready to play a game? No. Is he going to be Laurence Maroney or Gary Russell? No. But he can help us."
Junior Amir Pinnix was expected to take the starting job after Maroney turned pro and Russell flunked out of school. Pinnix said he thinks he has performed well in camp, but he brushed aside questions of whether he believes he should be No. 1.
"I leave that stuff to the coaches," he said. "The only thing I can do is go out there every day and try to perform to the best of my ability."
