it’s the only move they (tcun) had. it’s the only thing they at their disposal to change things up and show something different on defense. there was literally nothing else, on either side of the ball they could adjust in terms of their gameplan.
so, basically, what their whole gameplan rested...
also… if we needed to tie up our tight ends and rb’s with line blocking support, it means that it would free up their lb’s to jam up out receivers on crossing routes.
i don’t know if that’s what they were actually doing. i’d have to rewatch (which i have no desire to).
i can imagine a conversation that would go something along the lines of, “what if martindale breaks his blitzing tendency?” to which the answer would be, “as long as he doesn’t bring extra pressure, maybe we can counter with trying to run?”
and even without blitzing, if i recall, the stats...
like i said in my post… the game seems to be an exception for him.
he still seems stuck back in the sisyphean trauma of the 2021 game. that seems to be his bill murray-esque ground hog’s day.
what i’m beginning to realize over the last few weeks, and especially the last few days, in this new cfp era, is that the answer to this question probably falls along generational lines.
i’d guess that that generational dividing line, for the most part, falls between those among the broader...
i have to keep reminding myself that day is still a relatively “green” head coach. i think he is learning… we can debate whether the head coaching job at ohio state is the best place for him to make mistakes and learn. but i think he’s still trying to figure out his identity.
and, with the...
the game didn’t hold any less importance for me this year than in years past. i don’t think that will change in the future, regardless of the cfp. the feelings are imbedded waaay too deep for any future circumstance to change them. there’s just too much history - from ecstatic highs to extreme...
if the score was flipped around would be talking about a hard-fought victory that flips the script over in the rivalry?
would we be saying "day finally put it together"?
balance is just a notion. it doesn't exist in reality. it's like averages... they only exist as a mathematical construct.
in reality you do whatever the f*** you need to do on any given play to get to the first down marker or beyond. that's it. you don't look at balance or any other analytics...
why? if you were a player in that game, knowing what you were capable of, but not being let loose by your coaches, to finally redeem your name an dignity and sense of self-worth, how would you react?
yeah, the players are making bank, but nowhere in the stratosphere that the coaches are making...
right now i'd be totally happy with having a guy who can coach the team toward beating ttun. nothing else matters... take that first step and the rest will take care of itself. how many times have these mofos ruined our whole season?
the question, then, is what would it take for you to feel like you've been "forced into the latter"? what isn't broken now that needs yet to break open for everyone to see?
i've been thinking about things along the same lines... questions of a kind of one-sided allegiance (one fan to players / coaches) and identity and thousands of hours invested for what?
what i've concluded is that, for me, in my bubble, it's just about the connection to a group of other...
