Don't give up on the Baby Bucks just yet.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ohio State exited the Big Ten Tournament in an unbecoming manner on Friday, wilting under Michigan State's might and falling 81-54, thereby ending any hopes of a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

But, the National Invitation Tournament is calling -- post-game, Thad Matta would not fully commit to the Buckeyes playing in the NIT, but it would be a shock not to see them participate -- and there is still progress to made. Presenting three reasons for optimism for the (likely) NIT-bound Ohio State Buckeyes:

Marc Loving has raised his game since Jae'Sean Tate's season-ending injury

Believe it. Loving, the most popular source of consternation among Ohio State fans, has played tremendously since Tate was ruled out for the season on Feb. 23 because of a shoulder injury. As indicated by Loving's per-game averages before and after Tate went down, the junior swingman has proved to be indispensable.

Points

Free-Throw Attempts

Pre-Tate Injury (23 games)

14.7

5.0

Post-Tate Injury (5 games)

19.6

9.6

Loving may be a lithe 6-7, but he is 6-7 nonetheless, and considering he owns the second-highest usage rate on the team behind JaQuan Lyle, Loving has the ball in his hands a lot. And whether he's shooting or driving, Loving typically towers over the opposition's wing players. Loving has put his height and improved handle to good use of late, creating contact in the paint and continuing to knock down his freebies at a high rate. (Loving shoots 79 percent from the foul line, the second-highest percentage on the team.)

The Buckeyes' lone upperclassman was asked about his uptick in production after Ohio State's win over Penn State on Thursday, and Loving credited an apparent shooting institution run by his coach.

"Coach Matta's shooting school. We do shooting school every day in practice," Loving said. "So just being able to knock down shots from good positions [that] JaQuan (Lyle) and A.J. (Harris) put me in."

Sweet-shooting Michigan State won't be playing in the NIT

The header is sarcastic, but the point is serious: the Spartans seem to bring out the worst in the Buckeyes. The average margin of defeat for the Scarlet and Gray in the two teams' three games over the past three weeks is just over 20 points, and frankly, the beatings have felt worse than that margin.

The Buckeyes are a solid defensive team -- out of 351 Division I teams, they rank 38th in KenPom.com's defensive efficiency rankings, 41st in opponents' field-goal percentage, and 82nd in scoring defense -- but there is one area Ohio State struggles with defensively: defending the 3-point line. The Buckeyes have allowed their opponents to shoot 34 percent from three this season (208th in the nation) and convert over six made triples per game (238th in the country).

Guess what Michigan State does better than any other team in the country? Fill it up from deep. The Spartans drain nearly 44 percent of their 3-point attempts, best in the country, and make just over nine triples per game. Bryn Forbes ranks first nationally in 3-point percentage (50.2) and sixth in 3-point field goals per game (3.4). Denzel Valentine isn't far behind Forbes, making almost 45 percent of his threes (13th nationally) and 3.3 triples per game (ninth in the country).

In three games against Ohio State, Michigan State canned 30 of its 61 (49.1 percent) 3-point attempts, with Valentine (12-of-23) and Forbes (11-of-23) leading the way.

The more the Buckeyes play, the better off they will be in the long run

This season was never about this season for Ohio State. The 2015-16 campaign was always about the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. If Matta had somehow managed to guide a team of nine underclassmen to the NCAA Tournament, Gene Smith would have been forced to erect a bronze statue of Matta outside of the Schottenstein Center over the offseason.

Still, Ohio State stands to play at least one more game. That means we get to see how Lyle responds from his nightmare outing (five turnovers, one assist, one smashed water bottle) against Michigan State on Friday. We get to see more of Mickey Mitchell, who has gone from riding the pine for most of the Big Ten season to averaging nearly 23 minutes per game after assuming Tate's spot in the starting lineup. We get to see more of the foul-prone (3.2 fouls per game) and block-prone (1.5 swats per game) Daniel Giddens. We get to see if Trevor Thompson can respond after only grabbing a single rebound opposite Michigan State's burly front line.

Ohio State can worry about a return to Big Ten title contention and the NCAA Tournament next winter. This season, however long it extends, remains about the growth and development of the Baby Bucks.

The Buckeyes continue their dominance over the state of Michigan with the 6-5 victory over the Spartans after last weekend's sweep of Michigan

Getting hot in the last few games before the conference tournament is probably the best time to get hot when it's your only chance at getting to the NCAA tournament, and that's exactly what Ohio State is doing. The Buckeyes won their fourth straight conference game and fifth out of six with a 6-5 overtime victory over Michigan State last night.

The Buckeyes kept the momentum from their sweep last weekend of No. 6 Michigan with the victory and clinched fourth place in the Big Ten with the victory, giving the Bucks 28 points in conference with Michigan State in fifth with 19. OSU and Michigan State will meet again in the first round of the Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament on Thursday, March 17, at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

And if that game is anything like Friday's game between the two teams, we're in for a wild ride on St. Patrick's Day. Michigan State got things started with a goal at 7:46 from Ryan Keller. Shots were 14-11 in favor of the Buckeyes in that first period, but they just couldn't get one past Jake Hildebrand. The Spartans would take that 1-0 lead into intermission and this one, at the time, looked like it would be a defensive battle decided by the goaltending. It would not be.

The second period would be a giant pendulum shifting back and forth between the teams. David Gust tied it at one with his ninth of the year at just 2:38 of the second, with helpers going to Nick Schilkey and John Wiitala. MSU would go back on top at 5:35 with a goal from Mackenzie MacEachern, only to be followed by another OSU goal at 6:01 to tie it back up again. It was Luke Stork's sixth of the season, on a makeshift breakaway, from Dakota Joshua and Brendon Kearney. At 10:55, Michigan State decided they wanted their lead back and J.T. Stenglein provided the goal to make it so.

Naturally, Ohio State didn't like this too much, and Anthony Greco tied the game back up at three with his 12th of the year at 14:50 with assists from Josh Healey and Tommy Parran. Hildebrand was taken out by his own defenseman on the play and the routine shot from Greco found a way in. OSU would then get their first lead of the game on Gust's second of the game and tenth of the season at 16:05 and that 4-3 score would hold going into the second intermission. Drew Brevig and Kevin Miller recorded assists on Gust's second tally.

In the third period, Michigan State got sad about being behind for the first time and got a goal from Matt DeBlouw at 4:05 to cure their sadness and also tie the game. Ohio State was offended by this and Kearney scored his fourth of the year at 6:14 of the third to give OSU their lead back. Joshua and Stork were given the assists. Ohio State would carry that 5-4 lead for nearly as long as you could carry it without getting a regulation victory.

At 19:58 of the third period, with just 1.6 seconds left on the clock, Joe Cox decided we should get some free hockey. With the empty net and extra attacker, Cox found a way to get one past Christian Frey in net and sent the game to overtime. There was a pileup of humanity in front of the goal, but somehow the puck found its way in.

Frey stopped the four shots he faced in overtime, while Ohio State couldn't even get one until there were only 26 seconds left in overtime. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, that shot off the stick of Matt Weis found a way in and gave Ohio State the 6-5 overtime victory. It was Weis' 10th of the season, with the helpers going to Schilkey (of course) and Freddy Gerard.

Frey only stopped 29 out of 34 shots, for a poor .853 save percentage, but when the team scores like this, as long as the goaltending isn't horrific, the team's probably going to be fine. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, a team with a dearth of NHL talent probably can't score this much consistently for the rest of the season. Fortunately, they only have to keep it up for four more games to win the conference tournament in Saint Paul.

They'll hope to keep the offensive mushroom cloud in full effect when they play MSU on Saturday as a preview for the two teams meeting on St. Patrick's Day on Thursday in the conference tournament.

LGHL J.T. Barrett is more likely to win the Heisman than you might think

J.T. Barrett is more likely to win the Heisman than you might think

Barrett's got the arm, the intelligence, the speed -- but where's the respect?

Every year it seems as though the imaginary Heisman trophy shifts hands about 10 times from August up until the actual Heisman ceremony in December. Last season, college football's most prestigious award was supposed to be TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin's to lose. Then it was Ezekiel Elliott, fresh off of his magical postseason momentum, who was deemed ready to continue the Ohio State 20 year running back for Heisman tradition. Then it was Leonard Fournette, Baker Mayfield, Christian McCaffrey, and finally it was Derrick Henry.

A lot goes into winning a Heisman Trophy. Numbers are important, but as we saw last season with Henry winning over McCaffrey, even record breaking numbers aren't enough sometimes. Team success is important, no one wants to vote for a loser, but Johnny Manziel and Robert Griffin III both managed to win the Heisman with two and three loss seasons respectively. Then there's this thing called a "Heisman moment" which also seems to be a bit of a requirement.

A good example of a "Heisman moment", is from Ohio State great Troy Smith. Basically, a "Heisman moment" must be a play that defies reason, and shows how the candidate is simply on another level than those around him. Smith's moment entailed him running around in the backfield before launching a heat seeking missile to Brian Robiskie to ice a victory over Penn State:

Far from an exact science, the selection of each season's Heisman winner has so many variables that attempting to guess the winner seven months in advance is borderline insane. However, this hasn't stopped Vegas from predicting the Heisman odds for the 2016 season, and I'm here to explain why J.T. Barrett is much closer to becoming Ohio State's next Heisman winner than you might think.

Reason No. 1: Dem digits

When J.T. Barrett is in control of the Buckeyes' offense, it is a sight to behold. The intelligence to consistently make the correct read in the option game, the accuracy to put the ball on a dime anywhere on the field, the running ability to make any team in America pay on the ground: J.T. Barrett is special.

JT_Stats.0.png

In Barrett's 2014 campaign, his numbers were good enough to place him fifth in the final Heisman ballot, and Barrett could have risen even higher if it wasn't for that ill-fated second down run against Michigan. 2015 saw Barrett's passing production dip dramatically thanks to the early season insistence on starting Cardale Jones and only using Barrett sparingly (and mostly in the red zone at that). However, Barrett's rushing production took a step forward from an already impressive 2014 season, and the Ohio State offense often looked its most lethal with Barrett running the hurry up option game against the likes of Michigan and Notre Dame.

For Barrett to have a shot to make it to New York, these passing numbers will need to go back to where they were during Barrett's freshman season. Cam Newton won a Heisman while passing for just 2,854 yards, and with Ohio State leaning towards a running back by committee approach at the moment, there's no reason to believe that Barrett won't put up some gaudy rushing statistics surpassing both his 2014 and 2015 totals.

Reason No. 2: Expectations

Currently Barrett has the fourth best Heisman odds at +1,000. This leaves Barrett behind current favorite, Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson (+300), incumbent finalist Christian McCaffrey (+400) and LSU running back Leonard Fournette (+400). While all three of these athletes are undoubtedly exceptional football players, expectations could prove to be their downfall.

For Deshaun Watson to win the Heisman, Clemson will seemingly have to garner a repeat playoff appearance, and Watson better look good while doing so. Life at the top of the mountain is nice, but it just takes one hiccup to question a player's Heisman credentials, and regaining this momentum is very difficult. Remember the expectations that each Ohio State quarterback faced prior to the 2014 season? That is what Watson faces this year, and anything less than perfection will be scrutinized.

Christina McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette find themselves in the awkward positions of trying to one up their already masterful performances from a season ago. McCaffrey managed to break the all-time single season total yardage record, while Fournette's 1,953 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns were breathtaking in their own right. Anything less than these gaudy totals will likely leave the worst "D" word of them all coming out of voter's mouths: disappointing.

And then we have J.T. Barrett. While Barrett faced a similar Watson-esque view on his Heisman chances last season, this year Barrett can return to his 2014 role of lovable underdog. The Buckeyes are being projected to be ranked outside of the top 10 for the 2016 season, meaning Barrett will have more room to climb than any other top candidate. A big win at Oklahoma in week two could be just the type of jump start that Barrett's campaign needs. Then Barrett would have the chance to put up some gaudy statistics against the rest of Ohio State's non-conference schedule and middling Big Ten opponents.

The bottom line

While the 2016 season may not look like the perfect storm for Ohio State's title chances, it may just be the perfect combination of low expectations and missing talent for J.T. Barrett to thrive. If you thought Ohio State leaned too much on Barrett's running ability last season, just try subtracting the best running back in the country and see what that does to Barrett's number of carries. And while the receiving talent is unproven after having three starters leave for the NFL, Barrett functioned best in 2014 when the goal of the offense was simply to move the ball down the field, when getting specific players a predetermined amount of touches was an afterthought.

J.T. Barrett isn't exactly being disrespected by being tabbed as the player fourth most likely to win the Heisman, but then again, there is no reason for the large gap between third place (Fournette) and Barrett. Barrett's credentials and ability make him a top flight Heisman contender, and if Ohio State's talent around Barrett grows up faster than expected (like in 2014), don't be shocked to see Barrett strutting across the stage in New York come December.

The Buckeyes had their chances, but just couldn't capitalize.

The struggles for Ohio State baseball continued on Friday night in Las Vegas. The Buckeyes fell 5-2 to UNLV in a game where the bats just couldn't come through when the team needed it most. It was the third straight loss for the scarlet and gray, who are now 6-5-1 on the season.

Ohio State had opportunities throughout the night, putting runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but failed to take advantage. The Buckeyes left twelve runners on base on the night.

The Rebels used one big inning to pull out the victory, getting to Ohio State starter Tanner Tully for all five of their runs in the fourth.

UNLV starter D.J. Myers worked around trouble all game, allowing only two runs on four hits in six innings. The righty struck out a career-high eight batters.

After threatening in the first two innings but failing to cash in, Ohio State drew first blood in the top of the third. Ronnie Dawson ripped a ball into the gap in right-center that UNLV center fielder Cody Howard somehow tracked down but couldn't haul in, allowing Dawson to make it to second. After the junior left fielder stole third, Nick Sergakis sent a ground ball to the right side of the infield to score the run.

Tully breezed through the first three innings, but the Rebels got to him in the bottom of the fourth in a big way. Payton Squier led things off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. Justin Jones followed that with an RBI double to tie the game.

After a wild pitch and a walk to Vince Taormina put runners on the corners, Tully gave up back to back doubles to Andrew Yazdanbakhsh and Nick Rodriguez. An error by Zach Ratcliff at first on a grounder off the bat of Howard allowed the fifth run of the inning to cross the plate.

Tully worked seven innings in this one, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. The Elkhart, Indiana native struck out seven and walked two in his first loss of the season.

Dawson did get one back in the top of the fifth when he crushed his second home run of the season, a towering shot over the wall in right-center. But Ohio State simply couldn't get a hit when it was needed.

The Rebels got three innings of shutout relief out of Larry Quaney and Ben Wright to close out the win.

The two squads will play the second game of the four-game series on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. ET. Adam Niemeyer will be on the bump for the Buckeyes against UNLV's Dean Kremer. Live streaming of the game can be found here.

Michigan State arrived in Indy as the hottest team in the Big Ten. And, the Spartans show no signs of cooling off. Tonight’s 81-54 demolition of No. 7 Ohio State was impressive. It was the third time Michigan State had beaten Ohio State since Feb. 24. Tom Izzo’s squad looks to be peaking at just the right time. MSU will play the winner of No. 3 Maryland-No. 11 Nebraska on Saturday for the right to play for the Big Ten tourney title. The Buckeyes’ season ends with a thud. This was a case where a fresher, better team beat its undermanned opponent for the third time in two and a half weeks. Michigan State’s win 81-54 moved them to (27-5, 15-5) for the season and set them up for a Saturday game against the winner of the Maryland vs Nebraska game. Ohio State (20-13, 11-8) has ended this portion of the season. The 54 points by Ohio State set a seaon low in scoring output. It was that kind of game. The Buckeyes now await where they play in the post post-season.

Here is a very brief, pictorial summary of the game.

Ohio State's NCAA Tournament dreams are kaput after the Spartans vanquished the Buckeyes for the third time this season.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The third time most certainly was not the charm for Ohio State against Michigan State.

The Spartans (27-5) handled the Buckeyes (20-13) 81-54 in Friday's Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, depositing Thad Matta's squad for the third time in 18 days to move on to play the victor of No. 11 Nebraska (16-17) and No. 3 Maryland (24-7) in Saturday's second semifinal at 3:30 p.m. It's the second straight season Michigan State has knocked Ohio State out of the Big Ten Tournament in the quarterfinal round.

In pursuit of their eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, the quality win-lacking Buckeyes needed a victory over the Spartans to move back onto the bubble, but Michigan State's second-half surge was too much to overcome.Barring a miracle, Ohio State will play in its first National Invitational Tournament since winning the NIT to cap off its 2007-08 campaign. Prior to Friday's game, Big Apple Buckets projected the Buckeyes to garner a No. 3 seed -- and therefore, at least one home game -- in the NIT.

Michigan State sprinted out to an 11-5 advantage at the under-16 timeout, delivering the game's most riveting moment of the early going on a double alley-oop that culminated with a powerful jam by Deyonta Davis. Matta, who noted after Thursday's game that the reduction in timeouts per half from five to four this season has impacted his coaching style, looked as if he might signal for time following Davis' jam, but decided against doing so.

Over the next few minutes, Valentine began to assert himself, drilling back-to-back triples to push the Spartans' lead to 17-7, the latter a late-in-the-shot-clock back-breaker.

Michigan State was ahead 25-18 at the under-8 timeout, and upped that advantage to 32-21 on the first possession out of the timeout on another three by Valentine.

JaQuan Lyle, struggling to get anything going after a superb all-around effort vs. Penn State on Thursday, scored the Buckeyes' final two buckets prior to the timeout. That came after Lyle lost Bryn Forbes -- one of the best shooters in the country -- in a transition sequence that ended with a Spartan dunk. Lyle then turned the ball over and sounded off on teammate Daniel Giddens after an apparent mix-up. After a few words from Marc Loving, Lyle scored Ohio State's next four points before acquiring his second foul with 2:24 left in the half. After sitting on the bench, Lyle slammed a water bottle onto the ground, causing an on-court delay.

A.J. Harris replaced Lyle and had a hand in the Buckeyes' final two field goals before half, assisting on a layup to Trevor Thompson and sinking a jumper with under a minute left.

At halftime, Ohio State trailed 33-26 despite six turnovers and going 0-for-4 from 3-point land and 4-of-7 from the free-throw stripe. Michigan State cooled off from its hot start from beyond the arc and converted four of its 14 triples through intermission. Valentine led all scorers with 14 points at half. Lyle paced the Buckeyes with seven points.

It was abundantly clear that the two teams were intimately familiar with one another. Michigan State walled off the paint, forcing plenty of contested mid-range jump shots from Ohio State, which had attempted 60 free throws over its past two games. The Buckeyes did a solid job of communicating in transition and limited the Spartans to just two fast break points.

Ohio State could not have started off any worse in the second half, yielding 9-0 run capped by consecutive 3-pointers from Valentine and Eron Harris, the latter an open triple from the corner on a play that began with a bad pass turnover from Lyle. Matta called timeout, but the lead only grew, and the Spartans widened their lead to 51-32 with 13:37 remaining the second half.

The Buckeyes, playing without the injured Jae'Sean Tate -- who provides around-the-clock energy -- began to look fatigued at about this time in the game, with the Michigan State run fueled by transition buckets from Lourawls Nairns, Matt Costello, and an uncontested mid-range jumper from Valentine. At the under-8 timeout, Ohio State had trimmed its deficit -- which had ballooned to 20 points on two occasions -- to 61-47, with Kam Williams and Giddens providing some needed offense. However, Michigan State recovered quickly, bumping the margin to 73-47 at the final media timeout.

3 things we learned

1. Ohio State failing to qualify for the NCAA Tournament is no shock. Entering Friday's game, of the 10 players to net the most minutes for the Buckeyes in 2015-16, four were sophomores and five were freshmen. Loving, the team's lone junior, sophomore Jae'Sean Tate (who has missed team's past five games and is out for the season), and redshirt sophomore Kam Williams were the lone returnees from the 2014-15 team to average at least double-digit minutes per game a year ago. This was an incredibly young team that could have folded in mid-January when it lost three road games by a combined 71 points over a four-game stretch, but instead rallied to win six of its last eight games coming into Friday's tilt, finding its stride in February and March like a typical Matta outfit.

2. The Buckeyes looked a little fatigued. While Ohio State did finish its regular-season slate strong, its final three league contests were two bruising games against Michigan State and another opposite Iowa. Friday, Matta's very young crew was playing its second game in as many days. Factor in Tate's absence, the Buckeyes' bubble status, and the physically and mentally grinding nature of going up against the Spartans, and it was not surprising to see Ohio State's halfcourt defense slowly allow more open looks.

3. Michigan State is the top team in the country. The Spartans failed to win the Big Ten regular-season title, are No. 2 in the Associated Press poll, and No. 3 in the KenPom.com rankings, but they have the author's vote as the top team in the nation. Valentine is unguardable in the college game, and with Costello, Forbes, and Harris around him, Michigan State is quite possibly on its way to its third straight Big Ten Tournament championship game, a record fifth Big Ten Tournament title, and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes and the Spartans face off again, this time in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Ohio State was able to pull out the victory Thursday night against Penn State to advance to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, where they will face a Michigan State Spartans team that has already beat them twice this season. The two teams have played each other six times in the B1G Tournament, splitting the series 3-3. The Spartans however, are 2-0 in the quarterfinal round against the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes will look for repeat performances from Marc Loving and JaQuan Lyle, who carried the load for Thad Matta's team against the Nittany Lions. The two combined for a total of 46 of the 79 Buckeye points. A hot game from Keita Bates-Diop and/or Kam Williams could be just the thing to carry the Buckeyes over the top, and keeping their extremely slim NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

Michigan State is strictly playing for seeding. Carried by Naismith Player of the Year candidate Denzel Valentine and legendary head coach Tom Izzo, the Spartans are hoping to win out to secure their No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. With a plethora of weapons in Bryn Forbes, Matt Costello, Gavin Schilling, Deyonta Davis, and others, the Spartans are set up perfectly for a deep tournament run. The Buckeyes have a tall task Friday night, to say the least.

Ezekiel Elliott, Cardale Jones, and more entered Friday's showcase with something to prove.

"[NFL Media analyst Daniel] Jeremiah said Friday on NFL Network that there are at least 13 future NFL players participating at [Ohio State's] pro day."

- Dan Parr, NFL.com

Ohio State doesn't do anything important without commensurate fanfare. Friday morning's pro day, in which the team's NFL hopefuls showcased their stuff in an environment more friendly than the NFL Combine, was no exception. More than a dozen former Buckeyes ran drills, gave interviews, and seized their final chances to impress scouts, GMs, and head coaches before April's NFL Draft.

The pro day was vitally important for some of the team's biggest names: Cardale Jones, Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, and Braxton Miller. Jones didn't throw at the combine as a result of a hamstring injury. Elliott struggled more than anticipated with his hands, considered one of his best attributes as an all-around back. Bosa's combine made him look a little stiff, and Miller's 40-yard dash time was, at 4.5, something of a disappointment for the speedster.

That changed on Friday. Jones struggled with some overthrows, but got to show off his massive arm and soft touch, which will be a boon to his draft stock. Elliott was so sharp catching the ball that he even reeled one in while talking on the phone, using just one hand -- all while being guarded by Urban Meyer. Bosa, a guaranteed first-rounder, is trying to move his name even further up the board, and his pro day performance didn't hurt. Meanwhile, perhaps aided by some team-friendly stopwatches, Miller recorded a 4.3 40 time, which is more in line with what people expected of him.

Of course, even the Buckeyes who did impress at the combine wouldn't pass up a chance to improve their stock even further. WalterFootball.com's Tony Pauline spoke with a handful of anonymous insiders in attendance, who had high praise for some Ohio State standouts:

"Best workout of the day. Ran faster than I expected, ran terrific routes and caught the ball really well. Much better receiver than people give him credit for."
-on WR Michael Thomas, via Pauline

"Dynamic athlete and a good-looking football player. In the right system with proper coaching, he has Pro Bowl potential."
-on OLB Darron Lee, via Pauline

"He's going to be under-drafted. Should be a top-75 pick but may last until the fourth round. Does everything very well, but not the glamour-boy field-stretcher everyone wants today."
-on TE Nick Vannett, via Pauline
"If the team signed him, it would be hard to argue that the Steelers don't have the best offensive line in football."

- Bryan DeArdo, 247Sports.com, on Taylor Decker

While pro day events are hardly designed to highlight the skill sets of offensive linemen, they still have a chance to put their value on display during their interviews with NFL personnel. One player who really stood out during that part of the process was O-line stalwart Taylor Decker, whose decorated career in Columbus featured a national title and the prestige associated with blocking for Ezekiel Elliott, who -- despite being an otherworldly talent -- didn't do it all by himself.

Decker met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and while just about any franchise would be thrilled to have him -- including both teams from this year's Super Bowl -- the prospect of Decker in black and gold is an intimidating one. The Steelers develop O-line talent better than just about anyone, and lining Decker up next to the likes of David DeCastro and Maurkice Pouncey would certainly help Ben Roethlisberger sleep better at night.

The Steelers have been incredibly Buckeye-friendly in the last decade, giving contracts to players like Santonio Holmes, Mike Adams, Cam Heyward, and Ryan Shazier. Pittsburgh reportedly also met with Eli Apple and Vonn Bell during the event, and it's easy to see one or two Ohio State players from this draft class slotting right into the Steelers' lineup. (For what it's worth, I've also written before about the Buckeye who I think would be most beneficial to Mike Tomlin's team in the long term: Cardale Jones.)

"If they shoot 68% or whatever they shot against us five days ago, we're probably in trouble."

- Thad Matta on Michigan State, via Joe Rexrode, Detroit Free Press

While Ohio State football stole the headlines Friday morning, tonight's results on the hardwood will be of even more immediate consequence for Buckeye sports. Thad Matta's seventh-seeded squad will take on Michigan State for the third time in as many weeks, with the Buckeyes desperately needing an upset win to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

That's a pretty tall order. The Spartans have barely let the Buckeyes even make a game of things this season, losing by 19 and 15 points during their two contests in 2016. When Matta focused on shutting down Denzel Valentine in the first matchup, Bryn Forbes lit the scoreboard up from deep. When the Buckeyes tried to close off the long ball in the second game, Valentine worked Ohio State inside like an expert boxer. The Spartans can hurt teams in so many ways-- precision passing, deep shooting, powerful inside presence -- that it's going to take a confluence of small miracles for the Buckeyes to pull the upset here.
