Back in February, I told everyone about a joint venture my family’s race car team, and The Buckeye Battle Cry was doing for 2016.

Well we haven’t had the best weather this April here in Ohio so we’ve only been able to race a couple of times. One of those times was this past Friday night at 250 Speedway in Cadiz, Ohio. 250 Speedway is a 3/8 mile dirt track. Cadiz, Ohio is in the eastern part of Ohio very close to Wheeling, WV.

This past Friday night was their opening race night and our race team called Fat Guy Racing went down to the track for the first time. The #16 Buckeye Battle Cry sponsored Mod Lite driven by Allen Dillenger won the heat race and was poised to take the feature.

The featured started out bad as 2 Mod Lites collided on the backstretch causing both to flip in the air several times. The good part is both drivers walked way from the horrific crash.

That didn’t stop the #16 Mod Lite from going on and wining the Feature event in front of a packed crowd. The other 2 Fat Guy racing cars took 4th and 6th in the Feature which fellow Buckeye Battle Cry writer Ken Kohl said “Great! It sounds like the Buckeyes in this year’s NFL Draft; grabbing all the high spots :)”

It was an exciting weekend for all Buckeye fans and fans of The Buckeye Battle Cry. As Zeke Elliot, Joey Bosa, and Eli Apple was being drafted in the top 10, Fat Guy Racing and The Buckeye Battle Cry were taking all the top 10 spots in the Feature Event at 250 Speedway.

Congrats to all the Ohio State players who got drafted this weekend!

Till the next time…or race…Chill!

The Buckeyes end their season on a high note with a win over a ranked conference foe.

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team shocked the conference with a huge win over No. 16 Rutgers in Columbus in the team’s final game of the season. Despite key injuries in the midfield, the Buckeyes controlled the game more than the 12-10 final score would suggest.

Though Rutgers scored the first goal, the Scarlet Knights would only have the lead for just under two minutes in the first half, as the Buckeyes tied the game on a goal by attackman Ryan Hunter. Midfielder Johnny Pearson then scored his first goal of the day with 9:40 left in the first quarter to give Ohio State a lead that would not be relinquished. Attackmen J.T. Blubaugh and Colin Chell would tack on a pair of goals at the end of the quarter, but Rutgers would come back on a turnover by Ohio State with a score to close the deficit to two goals. The Buckeyes, however, would add another goal by attackman Austin Shanks to take a 5-2 lead to the second quarter.

With a dominant performance on faceoffs from midfielder Jake Withers, Rutgers did not win a single faceoff until the second quarter, giving the Buckeyes an edge in possession which they capitalized on with a goal by C``hell. Though the Scarlet Knights added two more goals early in the quarter, Pearson dropped two consecutive long-range goals on lengthy Ohio State possessions to give the Buckeyes an 8-4 halftime edge.

Despite winning the ensuing faceoff, Ohio State gave up a quick goal just 16 seconds into the third quarter. Rutgers began to find its footing on defense after the break, able to stop the Buckeyes more effectively on attack, but the Buckeyes would continue to control the faceoffs in the midfield, maintaining a 14-4 advantage through the third quarter. Pearson would answer with his fourth goal of the day to bring the score to 9-5, but with strong defensive performances on both sides, it would be nearly 10 minute scoring drought for both teams, which finally broke on a Rutgers goal with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter. Blubaugh then added his second goal of the game, but the Scarlet Knights would score with two seconds remaining in the quarter--the team’s first goal by an attackman in the game--to narrow the Buckeyes’ lead to three goals heading into the final quarter.

The two teams would trade goals throughout the fourth quarter, with Rutgers narrowing the Buckeyes’ lead to as little as two, but Ohio State’s attack managed to match the quick-score attack of Rutgers to hold them off. The Buckeyes controlled possession with a man-up situation with two minutes remaining in the game, and a save by goalie Tom Carey with 1:09 remaining effectively sealed the victory for Ohio State.

Pearson led the Buckeyes in scoring with four goals on the day, but both Blubaugh and Chell recorded hat tricks in the effort. Ohio State had 19 shots on goal to Rutgers’ 17, with Carey notching seven saves.

Having lost to Penn State, Ohio State will be shut out of the Big Ten Tournament next week, and will not make an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Buckeyes close out the 2016 season with a 7-8 overall record, going 2-3 in conference.

Ohio State's longtime strong safety is the latest Silver Bullet to be drafted.

Tyvis Powell will take his big-play game to the Seattle Seahawks as un UDFA, according to multiple reports. Powell was projected to get drafted by many experts, but he slipped despite a productive career at Ohio State. It didn't take long before he found a home with one of the best franchises in the NFL, though.

At Ohio State, Powell appeared in 42 games from 2013-15 and started every game over the past two seasons. Powell's career statistics don't jump off the page, but the redshirt junior often inserted himself into the limelight in some of the Buckeyes' most prominent games during his career, with those moments including the game-sealing interception of a two-point attempt at Michigan in 2013 and the game-ending interception against Alabama in the 2015 Sugar Bowl. Powell was also named the Defensive MVP of the 2015 College Football Playoff title game after notching a game-best nine tackles.

The 6'3, 211-pound Powell had a solid but unspectacular showing at the NFL Combine, confirming his status as a mid-round pick. While Powell's ball skills are evident, his ability to hold up in the run game was a concern for evaluators. Unfortunately for Powell, his skill set seems to put him between a pure free safety and a pure strong safety.

The Buckeye finds an NFL home after going undrafted.

The New York Jets have signed halfback/wide receiver Jalin Marshall after he went undrafted. After a relatively short, yet successful, career at Ohio State, Marshall was a surprise addition to this year's draft class.

In his two seasons with the Buckeyes, Marshall recorded 976 yards for 12 touchdowns -- and another touchdown from a punt return. The young receiver holds himself to a high standard, and once spent an entire day fielding footballs in the snow following a game with a couple of drops.

A highly touted high school dual-threat quarterback, was transitioned to wide receiver when he got to Ohio State. He redshirted his freshman season in 2013, but found playing time during the 2014 national championship run -- scoring four touchdowns in one game against Indiana -- and finished the year with Freshman All-American honors.

Marshall had a good combine performance, where he ran a 4.60 40-yard dash and was a top performer in his position group in the 20-yard shuttle with 4.13 seconds. He wanted to prove that he didn't come out of college too soon, and spoke to the media at the combine about why he made the right decision, " belong in the NFL and can play among the best of the best."

While he might not get a chance to contribute to his new offense right away, he'll prove to be a solid special teamer, and with some coaching, find a longterm role.

usa-today-9048582.0.jpg

After starting in all 13 games en route to the Buckeyes Fiesta Bowl win, Chase Farris gets his chance to play football at the next level.

After helping pave the way for Ohio State to lead the Big Ten in rushing yards per game last season, Chase Farris is taking his offensive line skills to the Detroit Lions, according to Ryan Ginn. The Elyria, Ohio native was instrumental in helping fellow Buckeye and NFL Draftee Ezekiel Elliott rush past the likes of Virginia Tech, Indiana, Michigan and Notre Dame this past season.

The 6'5", 310-pounder ran the 40-yard dash at Ohio State's Pro Day and clocked in at 5.17 seconds. Additionally, Farris showed off his vertical (26.5 inches), broad jump (8 feet, 6 inches), 3-cone drill (7.85 seconds) and bench press (22 reps at 225 pounds) in front of the record amount of scouts.

Analysts listed Farris' strengths as having a compact frame and strength in his hands. On the weakness side, Farris was said to have weak pass protection at tackle. That seems to take a back seat now, as he has found a home on an NFL roster. Some places had Farris as an undrafted free agent, but here is, another Buckeye off the board.

Farris began his time as a Buckeye on the defensive line, but moved to o-line – playing seven games in his freshman year (2012). In his sophomore year, Farris battled Taylor Decker for the right tackle spot, before being moved back to defense after Tommy Schutt got injured. His junior year saw the most action as a non-starter, as Farris saw action in 270 plays across the Buckeyes' national championship season.

A graduate of Ohio State in May 2015 with a degree in sports industry, Farris has done some charity work, too. Farris spent time in Costa Rica as part of the "Soles 4 Souls" initiative – a program that distributes shoes to those in need.

Following an impressive First Round showing on Thursday, the NFL teams also held Buckeye players in high regard over the weekend. Friday’s Rounds 2 & 3 went well with two Buckeyes drafted. So did Saturday’s Rounds 4-7, with XX Buckeyes chosen.. Let’s take a look of “Who, When, Where, Why” from Friday’s and Saturday’s activities.

Who: Michael Thomas

When: 2nd Round, 16th Pick

Where: New Orleans

Why: Despite having the most prolific passer in the league last season, the Saints had only two receivers in the top 54 at that position, and one of them in no longer with the team. This benefits everyone; Drew Brees gets a very good receiver and Michael Thomas has a very good QB looking to “distribute” the ball..

Who: Vonn Bell

When: 2nd Round, 30th Pick

Where: New Orleans

Why: Live by the pass, die by the pass. As mentioned above, New Orleans had the most prolific pass offense in the league last year. It also had the 2nd worst pass defense in the league. No mystery why Vonn Bell is brought on board.

Who: Adolphus Washington

When: 3rd Round, 17th Pick

Where: Buffalo Bills

Why: The Bills defense went from “great” in 2014 to “abysmal” in 2015, particularly in the realm of sacking the quarterback. A-Wash can provide an inside burst that was lacking last year. I doubt that Adolphus starts, initially, but I can see him in the DT rotation with Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams. Although “only” 32 years old, Williams is oldest player on Bills roster. AWash may rotate into the starting lineup if all goes well.

Who: Braxton Miller

When: 3rd Round, 22nd Pick

Where: Houston Texans

Why: The Texans had a productive year from Deandre Hopkins (ranked #3 in league) and that’s about it at WR. They need to bring in help at WR for new QB Brock Osweiler. Brax seems to be their “slot guy”. Wouldn’t he be something to cover if you’re a linebacker, or even a safety? Have fun.

Who: Nick Vannett

When: 3rd Round, 31st Pick

Where: Seattle Seahawks

Why: The Seahawks now have 6 tight ends on their roster. Other than Jimmy Graham, it looks like the others are either receivers’ or ‘blockers’. Graham had 48 receptions last season. The next TE had 17 receptions. Nick will get his chance to catch for Russell Wilson and block for whoever is carrying the ball. Who knows, Chuck may have him over as a dinner guest.

Who: Joshua Perry

When: 4th Round, 4th Pick

Where: San Diego Chargers

Why: The Chargers were in the bottom half of total yards allowed last season. It gets worse; there were 5th worst in yards allowed per play, so their opponents were fairly efficient against them. Joshua should bring some inside “enforcement” as well as lateral range to the Chargers. Of course, he’ll be teaming, again, with Buckeye Joey Bosa.

Who: Cardale Jones

When: 4th Round, 41st Pick

Where: Buffalo Bills

Why: The Bills have two QB’s on their roster; Last year’s starter Tyrod Taylor and former #1 pick EJ Manual. Tyrod was somewhat effective as a starter, but there is doubt if he is the long term answer. EJ is probably a functional back-up. His problem was that he was drafted too high, which created expectations that he in no way could fulfill. With Cardale going in 4th round, time has been bought for his development. Plus, his strong arm will be an asset on throwing in late season Lake Erie winds.

It seems that Jalin Marshall and Tyvis Powell will need to hook on as undrafted free agents. Maybe this wasn’t a good yer for them to declare…

What say you?

Jones is ready to make his mark in the league with a bit of a chip on his shoulder.

It came a year later than some expected, but Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones had his name called in the NFL Draft. The Bills took Jones with the No. 139 pick in the fourth round. Jones' arm strength, along with his other numerous pro football intangibles makes him an easy pick, and somebody who could develop into a formidable NFL quarterback.

Jones really burst onto the scene late in 2014, after he came in to lead the Buckeyes when J.T. Barrett fell to injury against the Michigan Wolverines. Jones would end up leading the Buckeyes to three of the biggest wins in school history, and the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship.

He really impressed at the NFL Combine with his throwing ability, but had his visit cut short after tweaking his hamstring running the 40-yard dash. Regardless, teams were still interested in Jones, and his skills were attractive to many, despite having just a handful of experience in games as a Buckeye.

Jones didn't put up the biggest numbers, but he possesses the body and skills of a pro-quarterback. Along with having a cannon for an arm, he has a great touch to go along with it, and can drop in a pass where it needs to be. Under the right leadership, Jones should be able to develop his skills at the next level.

Every year, it seems, there are several made-for-TV moments during the NFL draft. The 2016 event is no different, and there was a very cool Big Ten, in particular Ohio State, moment Saturday. San Diego had first-round pick Joey Bosa, the No. 3 selection Friday night, to be exact, announce the team’s fourth-round selection from team headquarters. That was cool in its own right, but the fact the pick was former Ohio State defensive player Joshua Perry made it even more special. Watch Bosa announce the Perry pick in the video above.
