Debate it: Can a Big Ten West team win the conference title in 2016?
Sean Merriman, BTN.com web editor via Big Ten Network

Michigan State and Ohio State have combined to win the last three Big Ten championships. Both the Spartans and Buckeyes are expected to be good again in 2016, and the emergence of Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines appear to make this year’s Big Ten season a three-team race. But what about the Big Ten West? Could a team like Iowa, Wisconsin or Nebraska dethrone the mighty East and bring home a conference championship this year? I asked that very question to BTN.com senior writer Tom Dienhart in this week’s segment of “Debate It.” Who do you agree with? Can

There will be plenty of Buckeyes competing in the summer edition of the NBA.

“D'Angelo Russell will be playing to get a little better, while other former Ohio State Buckeyes will be playing with eyes on a new job.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

The NBA offseason is in full swing, with free agency starting on Friday, July 1. After that frenzy is over, the NBA’s Summer League is set to start on July 8. This is typically when rookies, as well as players that might have been in the Developmental League or overseas get their chance to showcase their skills in hopes of making it to training camp with one of the 30 teams around the league. A handful of Buckeyes will be participating in the summer leagues in Orlando, Las Vegas, and Utah.

Along with the Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell, former Buckeyes participating include Shannon Scott, Sam Thompson, and Deshaun Thomas. Thompson and Thomas will be together with the Charlotte Hornets, and Scott will be playing with the Phoenix Suns. Thompson spent most of last season with the Grand Rapids Drive and the Delaware 87ers of the D-League, where he averaged 7.8 points per game. Thomas was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs back in 2013, but has not seen an NBA floor. He’s had a decent showing in the D-League with the Austin Spurs, averaging 14.7 points per game last season. Scott, like the two aforementioned former Bucks, has spent his time in the D-League, but with the Raptors, where he has shown flashes of success.

Along with the players mentioned above, we should be expected to hear from LaQuinton Ross, as well as Aaron Craft at some point before things tip off.

“The Cowboys plan to make rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott a workhorse.”

- Michael David Smith, ProFootballTalk

Simply put, big things are being expected out of Ezekiel Elliott this season. The expectations seem almost too high. Zeke is certainly a great player, but the NFL game is much different than college for a handful of reasons. With that said, Elliott is expected to have up to 300 carries this season, which would be just as much as any NFL running back. For reference, Adrian Peterson led the league last season with 327 carries. But if there’s anybody that can handle that workload while being effective on every play, it’s Elliott.

Now, how realistic is it that he will get the ball that many times? The Cowboys and those around the organization have had nothing but extremely high praise for the former Buckeye. And while it does have to be remembered that he’s a rookie, if they try to use him in a similar fashion they did DeMarco Murray, 300 might not be that unrealistic. When Murray had that monster 2014 campaign, he carried the ball 392 times. It’s possible that they might be more inclined to give him the ball more as a younger, fresher back. But don’t be surprised if they also ease him in early, before putting that load on his shoulders. Either way, we should expect a nice rookie year out of one of the best running backs in Ohio State history.

Four Buckeyes named Pre-Season All-Americans by Sporting News

It’s that time of year when we’re seeing pre-season award and All-American nominations, and just like last season, there are plenty of Buckeyes receiving honors. Today, Sporting News had four Ohio State players earning honors, with two landing on their first-team All-American list, and two on their second-team All-American list. The first team players included offensive guard Pat Elflein, and linebacker Raekwon McMillan. Both are considered NFL talents, and should have a big impact on the Buckeyes this season on their respective sides of the ball. Expect them to back up this nomination.

The second team players include quarterback J.T. Barrett, as well as punter Cameron Johnston. Barrett finished 5th in the Heisman Trophy voting his freshman year, and split much of last season with Cardale Jones, before finishing off the season strong. He could certainly work his way to a first-team spot by the end of the season. Johnston was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, and is undoubtedly one of the best punters in the nation. All in all, while this year’s team doesn’t have the same hype around them as last season, it should still be a damn good one in Columbus.

A BelieveLand product will be coming to the Buckeyes’ camp on July 22

Harris will be at Friday Night Lights

Big-time Ohio State wide receiver target Jaylen Harris (Cleveland, OH / Cleveland Heights) has confirmed that he will be at Friday Night Lights in July. Harris, a longtime Buckeye lean, holds 20 total offers and is a top ten player in the state of Ohio. Right now, Alabama and Michigan State seem like the biggest competition to land the four-star prospect, while a slew of other Big Ten programs are trying to make up ground.

Since the beginning of this recruitment, Harris has held the Buckeyes at or near the top of his list. He hasn't given a verbal to Urban Meyer, but that doesn't seem like an issue. The 2017 class is setting up to be possibly the best in school history. There's always a chance that Harris pulls the trigger at camp in July, where he's surely going to receive the red carpet treatment. If he doesn't, Ohio State will keep having to work and extend the lead for the 6-foot-5 wide receiver from Cleveland Heights.

Another big-time prospect says he will be at #OhioState Friday Night Lights camp https://t.co/kM82yXwFgu

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) June 28, 2016

Harris is ranked No.5 in the state of Ohio and No.24 in the country at WR. Currently, Ohio State doesn’t have any WRs committed in the 2017 class – but a few are mulling over the idea of being a Buckeye.

Wade: We'll win Championships

Land-Grant Holy Land caught up with five-star cornerback Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Christian Academy) on Tuesday. In case you missed it, check out the full interview here and what he said about his expectations when he arrives in Columbus.

Wade is part of the loaded 2017 class, and has five-star recruit status. In a state rich with talent, he is considered the third best player in the Sunshine State and second best CB in the country.

Martell Back at it Again on Twitter

Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) has been the hype man/ recruiter for the Buckeyes since committing on June 12. When he isn’t recruiting for the Buckeyes, he’s trying to get his future teammates a few more followers on Twitter.

On Tuesday, the No.1 dual-threat QB for the 2017 class wanted Buckeye nation to give a Twitter follow to Brendon White (Powell, OH / Olentangy Liberty).

#BuckeyeNation go follow our
2017 OSU commit..... ⭕⭕⭕

• Brendon White(@therealestbw0)

— Tate Martell (@TheTateMartell) June 28, 2016

White, who committed to the Buckeyes back on Oct. 2, 2015, is listed at both the WR and safety position. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder is the No.2 ranked player out of Ohio – and one of the key people commits to the 2017 class.

If you’re wondering what White brings to the table, take a look at his tape.

This fall, @ohiostatefb commit, @therealestbw0, is looking to do more of this all over Columbus, Ohio. https://t.co/VP3WgigJoz #hudl

— Varsity Magazine (@VarsityMag2016) June 28, 2016

If White keeps playing like the way he is in his highlight reel, it won’t take him too long to get that blue and white checkmark next to his name.

DC Area Native has Ohio State as leader

Just when you thought the Buckeyes defense for the 2017 class couldn’t get any better, another top prospect could be added.

Chase Young (Hyattsville, MD / DeMatha) is a five-star weak side linebacker and is projected to be a 50/50 commit to either the Buckeyes or Maryland Terrapins, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions. However, the odds may not be at 50/50, as Young told 247Sports after attending a camp over the weekend that “you could say that” Ohio State was his leader at the moment.

Like Harris, Young will be at Friday Night Lights in July to show off what he can do. It will be only a matter of time until we know if Ohio State defensive guru Larry Johnson, who had an illustrious career as a high school football coach in Maryland, can lure the 6-foot-5, 225-pounder to the Buckeyes – and possibly make the greatest recruiting class ever assembled.

LGHL The top newcomer for Ohio State could be Nick Bosa

The top newcomer for Ohio State could be Nick Bosa

Among all the new talented freshman, the one with the most hype might just be defensive lineman Nick Bosa.

"He's playing. He had the knee injury, but he's well ahead of schedule. Looks fantastic, and he's a little ahead of his brother at this time."

- Urban Meyer via Brian Bennett, ESPN

Ohio State's class of 2016 leaves fans with plenty to be excited about. With names like Jonathon Cooper, Demario McCall, Austin Mack, Dwayne Haskins, Michael Jordan, and Binjimen Victor all suiting up in the scarlet and gray this fall, there will be a healthy helping of expectations around this group. But perhaps the top newcomer among this class is Nick Bosa, the five-star defensive end from Florida. Bosa, of course, is the younger brother of former Buckeye Joey Bosa. Ever since the recruitment started for the younger Bosa, there has been plenty of talk about how he could end up being even better than the current Bosa brother that's in the NFL. Whether that turns out to be the case or not, the excitement level is currently there.

Although Bosa suffered a knee injury during his senior year of high school that has sidelined him for some of the offseason while getting acclimated with Ohio State's system, there's definitely a chance that Bosa will still see plenty of action this fall. Even with both Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis likely locked in as the starters at defensive end, it could be a safe bet that Urban Meyer and his staff will make sure Bosa sees his fair share of the field. And if what Meyer says is true about Bosa being ahead of Joey at the same time, then Buckeye fans could be in for a treat this season and beyond.

"New Year's Six bowls: Rose Bowl - Ohio State vs. Washington"

- Jason Kirk, SB Nation

Jason Kirk of SB Nation broke down his projections for the full 2016 bowl lineup and where teams would be slotted this season. For Ohio State, Kirk lists the Buckeyes as heading to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl as a part of the New Year's Six bowl games. In 2015, Ohio State was in the same lineup but in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. This time, Kirk has the Buckeyes facing off against the Washington Huskies which could end up being a very favorable matchup for Urban Meyer's team. Among the other notable games, for the College Football Playoff, Kirk listed LSU, Clemson, Michigan, and TCU. He has LSU and Clemson facing off in the national championship game.

For Big Ten teams, Kirk has Wisconsin facing Stanford in the Foster Farms bowl, Nebraska and Florida in the Outback bowl, Penn State and Ole Miss in the Citrus bowl, Iowa and South Carolina in the Music City bowl, Pitt and Minnesota in the Pinstripe bowl, Maryland and Western Kentucky in the Heart of Dallas bowl, Michigan State and UCLA in the Holiday bowl, Northwestern and Mississippi State in the Independence bowl, and Indiana and Syracuse in the Quick Lane bowl.

"Last year, the Big Ten finished the season with six teams ranked in the final AP Top 25: Ohio State (4), Michigan State (6), Iowa (9), Michigan (12), Wisconsin (21) and Northwestern (23)."

- Jesse Temple via Brian Bennett, ESPN

Speaking of the Big Ten, the good folks at ESPN gave their thoughts on how many teams would be ranked in the top 25 at the end of the 2016 season. With the over-under set at 5.5, and the teams that were ranked at the end of last season listed above, they took a look at how the Big Ten might stack up this year. Jesse Temple makes a good point that four of the above teams - Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa, and Michigan - might be considered locks this season to finish in the top 25. But after that it becomes a little murky with Wisconsin facing a tough schedule that includes its first six league games against Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Nebraska and Northwestern. Temple also mentions that five losses likely knocks the Badgers out of the top 25, and I would have to agree.

Now, Bennett does mention that whichever team finishes second in the West division will likely have a pretty good record, and it could be either Northwestern or Wisconsin. Even with that tough schedule, it does provide the chance for the Badgers to get big wins over hypothetical top teams and show off its tough schedule. Northwestern had 10 wins last season and Bennett doesn't see the Wildcats getting that many this season, but does say they could reach about eight wins. Again, good points by both sides, and for me personally, I think the Wildcats definitely have a good shot at finishing in the top 25.

Five-star cornerback Shaun Wade isn’t backing down from a little competition.

Ohio State added one of the crown jewels of their super loaded 2017 recruiting class, five-star corner Shaun Wade, this past January.

Wade knows the ‘17 class could be one for the ages, but he’s not worried about the expectations, the aggregate star rankings, or anything like that:

That “really means nothing,” Wade said. “"We’re just all going to go into class and compete against each other and just win championships. I hope all of us get to make it to the league," he said. "That’d be a big thing for Ohio State."

Though Wade reiterated his commitment to OSU is solid, he’s performing his due diligence and at the behest of his parents, taking a few precursory visits, just in case something unexpected happens and he and the Buckeyes cool on their current arrangement.

Wade mentioned Alabama and Notre Dame as “plan Bs”, despite his insistence that he expects to be a Buckeye when everything’s said and done on National Signing Day 2017. He’s expected to take visits to check out USC and UCLA, though OSU faithful shouldn’t start to feel nervous yet.

Be sure to visit and like Land-Grant Holy Land on Facebook for more updates like these throughout the summer camp circuit.

RIP Buddy Ryan

The architect of one of the great defenses of all-time, the 1986 Bears 46 defense, and former HC of the Eagles and Cardinals, Buddy Ryan passed away yesterday at 82. He was one of the great characters in NFL history. His 30 for 30 episode was one of the better, more heartfelt ones they have done, IMO.

Former NFL head coach and influential defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan has died, agent James Solano confirmed Tuesday. He was 82.

Ryan, who coached in the NFL for 26 seasons, was known for building some of football's top defenses behind a relentlessness that focused on creating havoc on the field.

He was on the defensive staff of the Super Bowl-winning New York Jets in Super Bowl III in the 1968 season. The Chicago Bears carried Ryan off the field next to coach Mike Ditka after Ryan's vaunted "46 defense" helped the Bears destroy the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.
