We’ve seen this before.

We’re used to Ohio State being better at things than Michigan. Whether it’s on the gridiron, the basketball floor, or on the lacrosse field, the Buckeyes are just better.

Urban Meyer is a great recruiter, but his ability to stay a step above Michigan showed at The Opening, when Ohio State commits faced off against Michigan commits in a game of tug of war.

Of course, just as they had done plenty of times in numerous sports, the Buckeyes came out on top over the Wolverines. Because that’s what the Buckeyes do.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come in the future when it comes to match ups between the Buckeyes and Wolverines on the gridiron.

If it’s going to be anything like this, we like the Buckeyes’ chances.

After a great 2015 the Oklahoma Sooners have no where to go but up in 2016...right?

2015 marked a big year for the Oklahoma Sooners. With a regular season record of 11-1, the Sooners earned their first undisputed Big 12 Championship since 2010. Unfortunately, even this elite level of success couldn’t quite break an even worse streak: the Oklahoma Sooners have lost to at least one team from Texas every year since 2004.

In the mid to late 2000s, these losses came at the hands of Vince Young and Colt McCoy of the Texas Longhorns, as well as tough losses against Texas A&M and Von Miller. Perfectly understandable to lose to great teams and players like these, but when your coach is nicknamed ‘Big Game Bob’, two loss seasons are usually two losses too many.

Then a funny thing happened. Just as Oklahoma began to hit their stride again, winning the Big 12 title outright in 2010, TCU and Baylor emerged as new pains for Oklahoma, ready to unleash their hurry up offenses on the long-time conqueror of the Big 12.

2011 saw Baylor defeat the Sooners for the first time in 109 years, and 2012 saw Johnny Football and the Aggies embarrass Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. The two loss 2013 Sooners managed to score a massive win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, but regular season double digit losses to both Texas and Baylor still kept Coach Stoops a ways away from reclaiming his throne as ruler of the Big 12.

The 8-5 2014 Oklahoma Sooners were what finally caused Coach Stoops to say enough is enough. 8 out of 9 of Stoops assistants were replaced following the down year, with the major change being a switch to a more fast-paced spread offense. The man behind the switch? Lincoln Riley, a 31 year old offensive coordinator who had success at East Carolina in the same role, and has a background at Texas Tech as a walk-on quarterback who learned the ins and outs of the air raid offense under guru head coach Mike Leach.

And just like that, Oklahoma football was back! An 11-2 2015 season ended with a 20 point loss to Clemson in the Orange Bowl, but Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield gave the Sooners’ offense a major spark, and even finished fourth in the Heisman vote. More importantly, Oklahoma managed to roll through the Big 12, with only one slip up to Texas early in the season.

Looks like Ohio State is out of luck then huh? Vegas sure thinks so, as the opening point spread for Ohio State and Oklahoma’s September match-up saw Oklahoma favored by 9 points over the Buckeyes. 9 points.

Now, this 9 point spread (which was released during the middle of May) has since been decreased to 6.5, but this still seems a bit high considering Urban Meyer has never lost at Ohio State as an underdog, or on the road. Ohio State should absolutely be the underdog for their week three match-up in Norman, Oklahoma, but there are several reasons to believe that Oklahoma may not be the 2016 college football powerhouse that everyone is expecting, and that 6.5 points may still be a few too many.

Oklahoma had a great 2015 season, but they were helped by timely injuries

Oklahoma was a very popular national championship pick as late as December of last season, and you can definitely see why. Finishing the year ranked 4th in S&P+, not only was Oklahoma beating nearly everyone they played, but they were doing so in style.

The problem in hindsight wasn’t so much how they were winning, but who they were winning against. A crucial 30-29 November win at home over TCU could be seen as Oklahoma finally moving past one of their new Big 12 rivals, or you could notice that Trevon Boykin didn’t play due to injury, and TCU was actually just one missed two point conversion away from winning in Norman despite not having their Heisman contender at quarterback.

As for Baylor, the same Baylor that had beaten Oklahoma three of the last four seasons, Oklahoma gutted out a 44-34 victory on the road. Was Baylor missing their own starting quarterback and Heisman contender Seth Russell? Yes, but this year Oklahoma’s high powered offense was good enough to get the job done.

Injuries happen to every team, but it was awfully convenient for Oklahoma to survive their two toughest match-ups of the season thanks in large part to the single most important player on both teams being hurt. Which leads us to our next point...

The book may be written on how to slow down the Sooners’ offense

Last season saw three key players make the Oklahoma offense into the explosive unit it was. Quarterback Baker Mayfield, running back Samaje Perine, and wide receiver Sterling Shephard. While the prolific passing combo of Mayfield to Shephard was mostly executing at will, the Oklahoma offense struggled when the running game couldn’t get going.

Only four times in 2016 did Oklahoma’s offense score 31 points or less. On these four occasions the Sooners went 2-2, still prevailing against Tennessee in double overtime and against TCU in the before-mentioned late season match-up. The numbers for Perine:

SP%202015.jpg

While Perine still managed to gash TCU, we notice that three of his four worst yards per carry performances have come in Oklahoma’s worst offensive displays - by far. This offense wasn’t exactly taking it easy on anybody, as scores in the 50s and 60s are very common in the above image. This makes the fact that Perine’s struggles led to offense performances far below the Sooners’ 2015 average of 43.5 points per game.

Unfortunately for Ohio State, there is reason for concern regarding the lack of experience on the Buckeyes’ defensive line, and their early development and ability to stop the run in Norman could go a very long way in attempting to slow down the Oklahoma attack.

Returning Starters

Much has been made about Ohio State’s depleted roster. With a mere six starters returning, Ohio State needs to grow up fast to have a shot at taking down Oklahoma. However, there are some positives in the Ohio State returning starters, as it won’t be a complete offensive line overhaul (guard Billy Price and guard, now center, Pat Elflein return), and J.T Barrett is back to try to put together another Heisman caliber season.

Oklahoma’s offense brings back the big names in Mayfield and Perine, but the offensive line will need to replace both starting guards like Ohio State, and the receiving corps will need to prove that Sterling Shephard wasn’t completely responsible for much of the unit’s 2015 success.

Oklahoma’s defense returns the bulk of its defensive line and secondary, but replacing three linebackers (including stud Erik Striker) will not be easy. A play-action heavy offense like Ohio State’s puts a lot of pressure on linebackers to consistently make correct reads, and this will be even more difficult while trying to break in these new starters.

The Bottom Line

Oklahoma is looking at a very promising 2016 season. The consensus Big 12 favorite will likely be favored against nearly everyone on the schedule, and for good reason. Mayfield and Perine are both great players with their names already scattered across the Oklahoma record books, and Oklahoma brings back the majority of a top 20 defense.

Offseasons are long, and we tend to forget smaller aspects of the season in return for more broad conclusions. “Oklahoma won the Big 12”, replaces “Oklahoma won the Big 12 after both Baylor and TCU lost their Heisman contender quarterback.” Samaje Perine ran over everybody...except three of the better defenses he faced all season.

Should the young and inexperienced Buckeyes be underdogs on September 17 in Norman, Oklahoma? Absolutely, but Urban Meyer hasn’t lost to an opponent by more than a touchdown twice since 2010, and history has shown that Meyer has no trouble with getting an inexperienced roster up to speed quickly. So before you are willing to go all in on the Sooners in 2016, just make sure you’re positive that Oklahoma is back to their yearly dominance, and not just coming off one good year with the right circumstances.

Lewis, Elflein, McMillan and Price get the watch list honors

“Ohio State junior defensive standouts Tyquan Lewis and Raekwon McMillan have each been selected to the watch list of the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy... Pat Elflein, who has already graduated, and fourth-year junior Billy Price were each named today to the watch list for the Outland Trophy.”

Ohio State spokesperson (via press releases)

You know football season is right around the corner when watch lists get released. Today, Tyquan Lewis and Raekwon McMillan found themselves on the watch list for the Nagurski Award.

For McMillan, it’s his second appearance on an award watch list. Earlier in the week, he was named to the Bednarik Award watch list. The Nagurski Award is given to the best defensive player in college football (and is voted on by the Football Writers Association of America) while the Bednarik award focuses on the best defensive player of the year.

Lewis found himself on the watch list after leading Ohio State in sacks (8.0) last season.

Pat Elflein, like McMillan, shows up on a second preseason list. Already listed as a candidate for the Rimington Trophy, the Pickerington, Ohio native is in early contention to be awarded the Outland Trophy, the award given to the best interior lineman.

Joining Elflein for the Outland Trophy watch list is Billy Price. Last season, Price was part of a Buckeye frontline that paved the way for an average of 245.2 rushing yards per game.

With the college football season just under 60 days away, we’ll see if these Buckeyes can live up to the preseason hype.

“Coach Matta is the best. Not just because he’s a phenomenal basketball coach, but because he cares about us when we’re here in college and he cares about how we’re doing even when we graduate. He still keeps in contact with a lot of us.”

– Adam Jardy, talking with former Buckeye Jon Diebler (Columbus Dispatch)

Jon Diebler is back in town. The former three-point sharpshooter talked with the Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy about running a camp for kids and delved into what Thad Matta means to past Buckeye players.

According to Jardy, Diebler’s brother, Jake, was the catalyst to how Jon got this camp up an running. Over 120 campers went under the tutelage of Dieber and a supporting cast of former Buckeye stars like Dallas Lauderdale and Evan Ravenal.

But, it was the camaraderie instilled by Thad Matta that brought the former Buckeyes back to Columbus summer-after-summer, according to Jardy’s account of Diebler.

Diebler was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, but has spent his professional career overseas playing in Europe.

While he never played in the NBA, Diebler will always be a legend at Ohio State for making it rain 3-pointers against Penn State.

“Clemson and Alabama are among the favorites to win it all in 2016, with Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, LSU and Notre Dame bringing up the next tier of contenders.”

Steven Lassan (Athlon Sports)

While watch lists were being cranked out, another batch of Bowl Projections came out into the world. This time, Steven Lassan at Athlon Sports made his predictions on where everyone was heading for the bowl season.

Ohio State, according to Lassan, is headed to the Fiesta Bowl Semifinal for a date with Florida State. In the Peach Bowl Semifinal, it would be a rematch of last season’s national championship with Clemson battling Alabama. However, Lassan has Florida State and Alabama playing for all the marbles in the CFP National Championship Game in Tampa, Fla. on Jan. 9.

Recently, SBNation ran a bowl game prediction, and had the Buckeyes going to the Rose Bowl to face Washington.

Even though these are just predictions, it’s a sigh of relief that people are picking the Buckeyes to show up in either a New Year’s Six Bowl or the College Football Playoffs. Ohio State returns just six starters, but have made enough noise to be considered a real threat to be in the national championship picture.

Dobbins set the best score amongst the best athletes in the country.

You may have heard of Nike's SPARQ Training score without fully understanding what it is. Considered the "SAT" for athletes -- and now used by the likes of the Browns to project NFL potential -- Nike measures performances of SPARQ grading speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness at each of their The Opening regionals and then at a combine at their large national The Opening finals.

On Friday, during the first day of this year’s main event, Ohio State represented in a big way.

La Grange, TX four-star athlete/all-purpose back commit J.K. Dobbins stole the show, winning the SPARQ “national championship”, finishing with the best score in the entire country, a daunting 146.76. Major Ohio State target Buckeyes recruiting target S Jeffrey Okudah finished second, with a 142.56, while Buckeye RB target Cam Akers finished third overall with a score of 140.13. Ohio State could very well sign the three most athletic recruits in the country.

tBBC Making The List: Mark Coleman

Making The List: Mark Coleman
jcollingsworth

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

MC-150x150.jpg

For this week’s Making the List I have decided to have some fun. There are so many Buckeyes in a host of sports that have been great in the sport of which they participated that are deserving of recognition. Some of these great athletes slide from the notice they justifiably have earned behind some of the “bigger” names from the University in the Revenue Sports….

…. One of those names is wrestler Mark Coleman.

Mark was born in Fremont, Ohio back in the turbulent year of 1964. He grew up – in his own words: “a wiry kid” that loved wrestling. In the years that followed, in his pursuit, of the sport that he loved he would find himself at Miami University in Ohio where he would become a two-time Mid-American Conference Champion. In his Senior Year (1988) he would transfer to The Ohio State University where he would win the Big Ten Championship and the NCAA Division I Championship in the 190lbs Class.

His list of early accomplishments did not waver from those huge titles. In 1990 at the Pan American Championships Freestyle Wrestling in the 90kg he came in First Place. He would repeat in the 1991 Pan American Championship (First) but in the 100kg. Also in 1991 at the U.S.A. National Freestyle Wrestling Championships he would be the number One overall winner there as well (100kg). At the 1991 FILA World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in the 100kg he’d be the runner-up. And to top it all off – in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona Spain in the 100kg he would be 7th overall – in the World.

Following his amateur career, Coleman made the transition to the then-new sport of mixed martial arts, winning his first two tournaments in commanding fashion, including a win over the then 8-time Champion Don Frye at UFC 10 in 1996. He would become the first UFC Heavyweight Champion after submitting UFC Superfight Champion Dan Severn via ‘neck crank’ submission at UFC 12.

In his Title Defense he would coin the phrase ‘ground-and-pound’ which would become routine phrasing in the new and brutal sport. He would lose that Title Defense in UFC 14 to kick-boxer Maurice Smith. The loss was considered one of the biggest upsets in the UFC history at the time – primarily because of the way Coleman had dominated his opponents in all of his previous battles.

His nick-name would be ‘The Hammer’. He would earn this name by his method of fighting in which he would dominate relentlessly against his opposition, never yielding until they dropped or surrendered.
Between 1999 through 2006 ‘The Hammer’ took his fighting skills and act to Japan in the league known there as ‘Pride Fighting Championships’. Coleman would win the Championship of the Pride 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix with a defeat over Masaaki Satake, Akira Shoji, Kazuyuki Fujita, and Igor Vovchanchyn. ‘The Hammer’ was officially back.

He would return to the UFC in 2008 and last until 2010 before eventually retiring. Mark Coleman ‘The Hammer’ is a inductee of the UFC Hall of Fame.

There isn’t any question if Mark Coleman is deserving of our notice for Making the List, his dominance in wrestling in the year that he wrestled for The Ohio State University clearly places him automatically into that well-earned spot. When great wrestlers from our wondrous space in this universe are mentioned – how many of us recall Mark? Without any assumptions against the rest of you – I will confess that I did not. But Mark was indeed a great wrestler for The Ohio State University. And you know what is great here too? There was a Buckeye that ruled the UFC at a spell and wore their Heavyweight Championship belt. You have to agree – that’s cool, huh?

The post Making The List: Mark Coleman appeared first on The Buckeye Battle Cry: Ohio State News and Commentary.

tBBC Class of 2017 Ohio State Buckeyes Defensive Recruiting Overview

Class of 2017 Ohio State Buckeyes Defensive Recruiting Overview
Ben van Ooyen
via our good friends at Buckeye Battle Cry
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

0068471-lbpz-1280x720-150x150.jpg

The Buckeyes currently sit atop the rankings with the #1 class in America for 2017. With the remaining targets on the defensive side of the ball, this class seems to be closing in as the best class in the internet age of recruiting. Unfortunately (fortunately) an abundance of riches on the roster has left Ohio State with a limited number of scholarships available for 2017. If you read last week’s offensive overview, then you know I projected the Buckeyes will take 10 on that side of the ball. On defense, I’d wager they take between 10-12 guys. Here’s where I think the Buckeyes finish on the defensive side for 2017.

Defensive End:

Right now, the Buckeyes lack a true defensive end commitment for 2017. However, they’re pursuing Chase Young, the #1 prospect in the state of Maryland. He would be a home run recruit on the defensive line which would add an immediate impact rusher. Unsurprisingly, the Terrapins seem to be the Buckeyes’ biggest competitors for Young’s services. He’s made several unofficial visits to College Park, so he’s quite familiar with the coaching staff and campus. Young visited the Buckeyes back in April, while he looks to make a return trip for Friday Night Lights on July 22nd. I expect the Buckeye coaching staff plus current commitments in attendance to give Young a lot of attention to try to woo him to Ohio State.

If the Buckeyes get Young, they’ll be one and done at defensive end, but if he decides to go elsewhere, keep an eye on Donovan Jeter and Joshua Paschal – two four-star recruits with offers from the Buckeyes. Jeter will probably stay in state with either Pitt or Penn State, while Paschal is split pretty evenly among Maryland, Kentucky, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

Final Say: Young

Defensive Tackle:

The Buckeyes currently have Jerron Cage and Haskell Garrett as commitments at defensive tackle. Both seem like solid commitments, but there have been worries about Cage going to play with his brother at Notre Dame and the possibility of Garrett staying closer to home in California. I don’t see either of those things happening, I believe both will sign on the dotted line for Ohio State next February.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are in the mix for quite a few of the nation’s top prospects at the defensive tackle position, including Marvin Wilson and Jay Tufele. Landing Wilson is a long shot since he currently holds crystal ball predictions to LSU, Texas, FSU, Baylor, and Alabama. He did visit Ohio State including them in his recently-released top 10. Utah’s top player Tufele has listed Ohio State at or near the top of his list for a while now, he’ll participate in The Opening this week alongside fellow Buckeye commits. I’m sure his fellow recruits will be in his ear about joining the best class in the country at Ohio State. Tufele also holds offers from Oregon, Michigan, and a plethora of other programs, so I don’t expect his recruitment to end any time soon.

Final Say: Cage, Garrett

Linebacker:

Ohio State already has two commitments from Brendon White and Antjuan Simmons, but linebacker is one position where I can see the Buckeyes adding one or two commitments if the right names want in. Baron Browning out of Kennedale, Texas, for instance, is a consensus five-star recruit that heavily favors the Buckeyes. He’s expected to be on campus for Friday Night Lights and will undoubtedly get the red carpet treatment from the coaching staff. While the crystal balls predict him staying at an in-state school – Texas, TCU, Baylor, or A&M – I think this is one the Buckeyes can steal from the state of Texas.

The Buckeyes probably wouldn’t refuse Dylan Moses, who recently listed Ohio State as one of his five official visits, or Anthony Hines, another top linebacker from the state of Texas. Hines visited Ohio State in June, but with over 90 offers, he can go pretty much anywhere in the country. He announced his top 10 at The Opening yesterday and the Buckeyes made the cut.

Final Say: White, Simmons, Browning

Cornerback:

Shaun Wade’s recruitment has been interesting to say the least. He claims he’s 100% committed to Ohio State, but he continues to flirt with other schools. Recently he announced he planned to visit arch-rival Michigan, which cannot make the coaching staff happy. He’s also been to Florida, Notre Dame, and USC since committing to Ohio State. At this point, it looks like we won’t know where his loyalties lie until signing day. Marcus Williamson is the other current commit in the class. He attends the IMG Academy down in Florida with a few other Buckeye commitments, and I expect that entire contingent to make its way north next year.

As for uncommitted prospects who may don the scarlet and gray next season, check out Darnay Holmes, Lamont Wade, and Amir Riep. Holmes is a teammate of another Buckeye recruit Tyjon Lindsey. Both players have taken multiple trips to Nebraska and seem to be very interested in what the Huskers are saying. Holmes is also crystal-balled to UCLA plus Stanford, both of which are close to home and viable options. He’s visiting for Friday Night Lights, the Buckeye coaching staff and recruits will try to work their magic, but I don’t see Holmes at OSU next season.

Lamont Wade will also be at Friday Night Lights, he was once thought to be a slam dunk to Ohio State. The Buckeyes still appear to be the team on top, but his home state schools of Penn State and Pittsburgh are becoming increasingly competitive for his services. If the Buckeyes have enough room and allow Wade to enroll early at his request, then I think he ends up a Buckeye. If not, then I think he is off to Happy Valley.

Amir Riep is yet another Friday Night Lights attendee but, he’ll make his college decision the day after – July 23rd. Rumor has it the decision is down to Michigan State and Ohio State, but lately it seems like this one has been trending away from the scarlet and gray. I still think Riep picks the Buckeyes in the end.

Final Say: S. Wade, Williamson, A. Riep

Safety:

The Buckeyes have Isaiah Pryor – another IMG Academy product – committed at safety for 2017. They’re also fighting hard for five-star and consensus #1 safety prospect Jeffrey Okudah out of Grand Prairie, Texas. Okudah has long named Ohio State as his top school, and he recently made a visit to the Buckeye state. Ohio State has an impressive 59% of the crystal balls for Okudah – when he makes his decision, the Buckeyes should be it.

Should Okudah decide to go elsewhere, consider Jaylen Kelly-Powell from Cass Tech in Michigan. If things fall through with Okudah, I think the Buckeyes will put all their eggs in Kelly-Powell’s basket, but the Wolverines will be tough to beat for him.

Final Say: Pryor, Okudah

Specialists:

Right now the Buckeyes have Blake Haubeil committed as the only specialist for the 2017 class. He’ll likely grey shirt so his eligibility begins after Sean Nuernberger’s ends next season.

Final Say: Haubeil

Taking into account Haubeil’s grey shirt, the Buckeyes have 11 commitments on the defensive side of the ball. That gives them 21 for the class of 2017. There could be another grey shirt or two in that bunch, but we’ll have to wait and see if those players stick around or go elsewhere a la Todd Sibley. Right now, the Buckeyes are 10 scholarships over the limit for 2017, with the potential to add another seven commitments. That means the Buckeyes need to find a way to get from 102 scholarship athletes down to the NCAA-mandated 85 between now and the start of fall camp in 2017. There should be a few early entrants to the NFL and some transfers, but that only gives us a little wiggle room. Getting down the rest of the way is a puzzle I’ll let Urban Meyer and company piece together.

Anthony Hines put the Buckeyes in his list of 10 schools

Bucks make the cut, yet again

The defensive side of the ball in the 2017 Ohio State recruiting class is easily at or near the top of the list in the entire country. Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell has to be licking his chops at what is coming in the near future. Yesterday, the good news for Ohio State trend continued as the nation's top ranked inside linebacker trimmed his list to a final ten schools out of an incredible ninety scholarship offers with the Buckeyes making the cut.

Anthony Hines (Plano, TX / Plano East) announced via his Twitter yesterday that he was down to ten schools that he is still considering before making a final college decision. Announcing the ten schools by video, Hines is still high on Oklahoma, Florida, UCLA, Texas and Auburn among others.

— Anthony Hines III® (@TheAntHines_Era) July 7, 2016

Schools that are currently leading the way for Hines via the 247sports crystal ball predictions are Oklahoma and the in-state Texas Longhorns, but after a June 10-12 visit to Ohio State, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes are still certainly in the mix for the top linebacker.

We will see how his recruitment continues to narrow down, but while at Nike's The Opening, Hines was seen wearing Ohio State gear which will easily excite Buckeye fans everywhere.

What does it take to play at Ohio State?

In recruiting, the 2017 class to most could not get any better, but with so many 4-star and 5-star prospects still very high on the Buckeyes, the top ranked class is bound to get an even higher boost. One thing that is for sure: Urban Meyer and Mark Pantoni are at the top of their game with this class.

People always ask...

Simply put...

Be the best

OSU can make Lindsey's dreams come true

If you're one of the select few elite athletes in high schools football, the premier camp to attend is Nike's The Opening. Currently going on in Eugene, Ore., Ohio State has a litter of current commits competing and several more targets in attendance. One 5-star target who needs no introduction, Tyjon Lindsey (Corona, CA / Centennial) is currently one of the select studs in Oregon.

We know Lindsey is high on the Buckeyes first and foremost. Former teammate and close personal friend Tate Martell has been all over Lindsey with the pro-Ohio State recruitment talks since his commitment in June. While things are definitely looking great for the Buckeyes in terms of Lindsey, while at The Opening, Tyjon took time to talk with scout.com and later reported on by Cleveland.com, Lindsey shows exactly why the Buckeyes are right at the top of his final schools.

To put it simply, Lindsey wants to win championships and play for a title contender at the next level and he knows that can happen at Ohio State. To see the full interview, use the link below.

Akers repping OSU in Oregon

Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton) continues to be the main guy Ohio State wants in their future backfield – and in their 2017 recruiting class. While it was reported just last week in this segment, Akers was starting to seriously trend toward Ohio State in the 247sports crystal ball predictions graph. The last six predictions being in favor of the Buckeyes certainly give the feel that Akers to Ohio State is becoming a serious storyline.

Yesterday, while in Oregon for Nike's The Opening, Akers was seen representing Ohio State as the Buckeye gear was seen upon Akers's arrival. Cam's recruitment still has a ways to go before anything is final, but as each day passes, the two schools of Ohio State and Ole Miss look to be the final two to really have a shot at the 5-star product with the Buckeyes looking to take the driver's seat for Akers.

Ezekiel Elliott sighting turns heads

There's hardly any downtime for a first round NFL Draft pick, but former Buckeye running back and legend Ezekiel Elliott has made his way to Oregon to visit for Nike's The Opening. As a former Opening alum, Elliott is the perfect example to these current Opening campers as to what can happen if you work as hard as possible at the next level and at every opportunity that is extended. While in Oregon yesterday, Elliott seemed to be the center of attention as countless recruits took time to spend with the future NFL stud.

Obviously great for Ohio State recruiting, Urban Meyer has to love his former star running back selling Ohio State to the country's best prospects.

Quick Hits:

  • Current 4-star Ohio State quarterback commit Danny Clark announced he will be in attendance for the July Ohio State Friday Night Lights camp.
  • Parkersburg High School 2017 running back Jaden Lacaria will be in attendance for Ohio State's Friday night Lights camp.
  • Mansfield, Ohio class of 2018 receiver Jornell Manns has been invited to Ohio State's Friday Night Lights camp.

Meyer is always ahead of the game.

“We’re going to try to get something where there’s a time those [scouts] can actually come in and they can work out the juniors. Because information is good.”

- Urban Meyer via Zac Jackson, ProFootballTalk

Urban Meyer has always seemed ahead of everybody else when it comes to just about anything in the world of football. Wednesday, he said that he’s working with coaching colleagues and the American Football Coaches Association on allowing potential early entries for future NFL drafts to work out for scouts and execs early without losing eligibility. This seems to somewhat parallel what the world of college basketball has done, by allowing players to declare for the draft and testing their stock without losing eligibility. Meyer being at the front of this movement makes sense, especially after the Buckeyes had nine players give up their remaining eligibility to enter this past NFL Draft.

Meyer says the current process isn’t great, and he’s right. Many juniors look to go to the NFL, and the league takes a hard look at a lot of those guys, but the evaluations can’t be thorough without a player losing his eligibility. Meyer told PFT’s Zac Jackson, “[The players] are getting their information somewhere, so why not get it from the experts — the scouts, the general managers, people who have the right information? They’re getting it from agents and they’re getting it from wannabes, and that’s not good information.” If you talk to any of Meyer’s past players, they will tell you he’s not only helped them grow in every way, but that he also wants what is best for them. This is yet another example of such.

“For the fifth straight year [Urban Meyer] teamed up with fellow Ashtabula native Dean Hood, [...] on a three-hour camp for youth up through the eighth grade.”

- Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Camps have been a big discussion in the world of college football this season, but this camp was one that was for fun more than anything, and involved Urban Meyer getting the youth involved. Along with Dean Hood, former Eastern Kentucky head football coach, the two had a three-hour camp that was held at the Spire Institute. It also sounded like Meyer preferred this camp over the satellite camps. He told Tim May that he worries about the staff burning out, and added, “At some point when do you get to watch your kids play baseball? I know what I’m going to do, I’m going to watch my kid play baseball. I want our coaches to do that.”

Meyer added that he felt that camps were a must for schools outside of the Power Five. Hood added to the benefits it had for schools like his, in the fact that other schools were doing camps on their campus, so they didn’t have to travel as much and could even get to the point where they don’t have to travel. The long-term positives and negatives of satellite camps still seem to be working themselves out, and it will be interesting to see how schools handle them moving forward considering their respective situations.

“[Noah Spence] was outstanding. It was one season but it couldn’t have gone any better.”

- Dean Hood, Eastern Kentucky head coach, via Zack Jackson, ProFootballTalk

Dean Hood recalls to PFT’s Zac Jackson that Urban Meyer came to him about Noah Spence, saying that he needed a second chance and would make the most of it. Knowing Meyer, Hood immediately took him up on it since he had never come to him with such a situation before, and it’s turned out pretty well for all that have been involved. Spence was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 39th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and could end up having a great NFL career after almost losing it.

Hood’s remarks on Spence couldn’t have been more reassuring, saying, “Every scout that asked about him, I said Noah has a work ethic that was [outstanding],” Hood told Jackson. “He has a competitive rage that’s coachable. I’ve been around some kids that have that rage, that edge, but it wasn’t controllable. But Noah liked coaching. He handled everything. I think he’ll be successful.” It’s great to see the former Buckeye finding success and overcoming his obstacles, some of which many people are unable to overcome.

On this day 12 years ago, @OhioStateHoops introduced Thad Matta.

Here's a fun soundbite to celebrate. #ELE https://t.co/j0kDTpCYQ2

— Brent Yarina (@BTNBrentYarina) July 7, 2016

It’s been 12 years to the day that Thad Matta became the Ohio State head coach, and Big Ten Networks’ Brent Yarina shared this gem from one of his better postgame pressers.

Matta has given the Buckeyes over 300 wins in his tenure at the school (320 to be exact), and has won at least 20 games in every season. While things haven’t been the best for the basketball Bucks the past two seasons, there’s not many coaches who you’d rather have on your team than Matta.

Ohio State senior punter Cameron Johnston has been named to the Ray Guy award watch list.

To no surprise, Ohio State Buckeyes punter Cameron Johnston has been named to the Ray Guy award watch list. The award is given out to the best punter in the nation. He was named to the preseason watch list last season, and has been a semifinalist for the past two seasons.

Perhaps this could be the year that Johnston takes home the hardware. He’s been great in his time with the Bucks. The team has led the Big Ten in net punting for the past three years, and he led the conference in punting in 2013 and 2014 in averages, and finished second last season. He stands at third all-time in school history with a career average of 44.3 yards per punt.
