Welcome to your tri-weekly dose of Ohio State recruiting news and notes! Heard Around the ‘Shoe will now be posted on Monday-Wednesday-Friday.

New Social Media Rules in Effect:

In case you hadn’t noticed or don’t follow recruiting, the way that coaches can interact with recruits on social media changed starting August 1st. Coaches can now re-tweet, like, share and repost anything from social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Coaches are still not able to comment on or tag a student athlete in posts on social media, so at least there is still that restriction. I follow quite a few prospects on Twitter, and the amount of re-tweeting done by coaches now fills my timeline with old posts and things I don’t need to see again and again. Lucky for us there is a way to turn off re-tweets from specific people as to not clutter the timeline. You can see below the new rules and how they effect coaches and their interactions with the student athlete before they sign a letter of intent and then after.

I for one agree with Landof10’s Jeremy Birmingham that this will soon get out of hand.

“Well, I was going to go to that school, but their coach didn’t RT me as much as this school did. That sealed the deal for me.” #Soon

August 22nd a Good Day for the Buckeyes?

The end of August is shaping up to be another banner few days of recruiting news for Ohio State as Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes are set to make their announcements. Lindsey had said earlier that he might change his date to an earlier time, but has since backed off that and posted this yesterday on twitter announcing his intentions to commit on the 22nd of August.

While he has 10 teams listed, it is likely a battle between Nebraska and Ohio State for this talented 4-star receiver out of Calabasas, California. Be prepared for some sort of video reveal on Bleacher Report, hopefully it is as cool as Emory Jones video from last week.

The continuing saga of Shaun Wade:

Possibly the most interesting story in Ohio State recruiting is the continuing drama of Shaun Wade. Wade has been committed to the Buckeyes for over a year now, and yet he continues to take visits to other schools and flirt with other programs across the country. Most recently it has been Michigan that has been on the radar for Wade, and he was rumored to be visiting for the big BBQ that is taking place this weekend, which is a huge recruiting tool for the Wolverines. It doesn’t look like Wade will be making the trip this weekend, but he will be getting up to Michigan for an official visit (October 1st) according to his father who spoke to Landof10.com. It was once thought that Alabama was the second team in the equation, but they have offered a few other defensive backs in the last couple of weeks, and maybe saw the writing on the wall that Wade wouldn’t end up in Tuscaloosa. Is Michigan a viable threat to Ohio State for Wade’s services? I don’t think so, but as we have seen in recruiting over the years, anything can happen.

#1 Athlete in New Jersey Announces Top 7:

2017 Athlete Markquese Bell out of New Jersey released his top 7 yesterday and the Buckeyes made the cut. The Buckeyes are probably not in a position to take a commitment from Bell if he wanted to, as they are putting all their chips in the basket of 5-star recruit Jeffrey Okudah from Texas.

Top 7

Bell says in the video above that he will visit Ohio State for the Michigan game on November 26th, and make his decision shortly after on December 1st. All signs are pointing at Rutgers for this one.

2018 Ratings Bump:

Two high profile recruits that the Buckeyes are pursing for the 2018 class got a bump from 4-star status to 5-star status in the recent release of the 247 sports recruiting rankings. Westerville, Ohio’s Jaelen Gill and Bellflower, California’s Jaiden Woodbey both got moved up to 5-star status. Gill is 100% projected to be a Buckeye by all the recruiting experts, and Woodbey who was trying to attend for Friday Night Lights and couldn’t make it, has 50% of his crystal balls to USC and 33% to Ohio State at this point. Woodbey is still trying to get to Columbus to visit, and getting him on campus would go a long way toward showing him what Ohio State has to offer.

New Offer Out for 2019:

One of the hottest names in 2019 is Devyn Ford, a class of 2019 running back out of Stafford, Virginia. Ohio State became his 19th offer yesterday, joining Virginia Tech, Clemson, Georgia and Michigan State among others.

#OhioState offers elite back Devyn Ford. https://t.co/Vfi732qq2Z @Mangano0073 @Bill_Kurelic @alexgleitman

— Ryan Bartow (@RyanBartow) August 2, 2016

Another 2018 name to keep and eye on:

Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada seems to be a hot bed of Ohio State recruiting right now. With the commitments of Haskell Garrett and Tate Martell already in the books, the Buckeyes are looking to lock up their current teammate and class of 2018 star linebacker Palaie Gaoteote. Gaoteote has 16 offers so far, and seems to be favoring the Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and USC Trojans as of right now. Yesterday he received another offer from TCU.

God Is Good! Excited to say that I have just received my 18th offer from Texas Christian University

Gaoteote is ranked as the #1 outside linebacker in the class of 2018, and the #1 overall prospect in the state of Nevada. I imagine that Martell and Garrett will be in his ear during this season trying to persuade him that donning the Scarlet and Grey is the way to go.

Larry-Johnson-150x150.jpg

Back in February, I took a look at arguably the strongest positional group for the 2016 Buckeyes. Things have not changed too much five months later as we are staring directly down the barrel of fall practice beginning. There were two major shake-ups which came out of the spring practices. First, Donovan Munger unfortunately had to end his playing career due to blood clots. The second major thing to come out of spring was the rise of Tracy Sprinkle. Let’s take a look at the projected starting lineups and the major players who will be wreaking havoc on the opposing quarterbacks.

It is pretty much a foregone conclusion junior Tyquan Lewis and sophomore Sam Hubbard will be the starters at defensive end for the Buckeyes. Living in the shadows of Bosa and Washington, the North Carolina native Lewis put up outstanding numbers in 2015. His stat line of 54 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and 8 sacks even surprised me as he just quietly went about his

Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis hope to meet in the backfield a lot in 2016.

business without much fanfare.

On the opposite side of the line, Hubbard will finally get a chance to show what he can do in a full-time position. Backing up Bosa last season, Hubbard managed 28 tackles, 8 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries which all showcased his wide-array of skills. After playing linebacker, tight end, and safety it appears Hubbard has finally found a home at defensive end.

As impressive as those two are, there are numerous players chomping at the bit to get their shot at some playing time at the defensive end position. There will certainly be no shortage of talent when Lewis or Hubbard take a breather. The first guy off the bench will be junior Jalyn Holmes who will once again play the primary back-up role to Lewis. In 2015, Holmes had 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble. Holmes is a guy who is constantly praised by the coaching staff but is at a very deep position which has hurt his playing time.

Outside of Holmes, you have three guys who will see a lot of playing time at defensive end and possibly defensive tackle in some cases. The first is redshirt freshman Rashod Berry who moved from tight end in the off-season. Berry exploded onto the scene during the spring game where he showcased his elite speed off of the edge. If Holmes and Berry weren’t scary enough as back-ups, the Buckeyes then have two five-star recruits coming in and already making an impression, Nick Bosa and Jonathon Cooper. I would not be surprised to see both of these guys get a lot of playing time this year in a variety of roles. As I predicted in February, I could also see Bosa moving inside and grabbing a starting job but that seems a little more unlikely after the spring game.

At defensive tackle, it appears like juniors Michael Hill and Tracy Sprinkle have a pretty tight grip on the starting jobs. Hill has spent the past two seasons moving his way up the depth chart

Sprinkle has made me a believer. (Image courtesy of 247Sports)

and has played well at every opportunity. At 305 pounds, Hill will be counted on to clog up the middle to allow the linebackers to roam freely.

Sprinkle is a guy that I was never overly impressed with for no apparent reason. I read over and over how Sprinkle was the guy to watch and that he would win the starting job but I was never a believer. That was until the spring game when Sprinkle was essentially doing whatever he wanted in the middle. He has got the size (6’3”, 293 lbs) and the athleticism to really make a difference with teams focusing so much on Hubbard and Lewis.

Sprinkle was not the only defensive tackle who caught my eye in the spring. Switching over from defensive end, redshirt freshmen Jashon Cornell and Dre’Mont Jones both had a tremendous spring games. Just like Sprinkle was able to do, Cornell and Jones were pretty unstoppable and made the interior offensive line look really bad on a few occasions. I don’t foresee either challenging Hill or Sprinkle for the starting job but they will receive a lot of playing time…especially on third and long.

Others who could possibly see time this year are sophomore defensive end Darius Slade, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Robert Landers, and true freshmen Malik Barrow. All three of these guys are very capable but are a little bit buried on the depth chart at the moment.

The options are endless with what the Buckeyes will be able to do on the defensive line. The coaching staff has stated over and over again their desire to rotate 10-12 guys up-front and they should be able to do that this year. The four starters are set in my opinion but Bosa will play a huge role coming off the bench at a variety of different positions this year. These guys will be the key to the Buckeyes hopes in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Buckeyes sent an offer to elite 2019 RB Devyn Ford.

As we slowly start to advance through August, fall camp continues to inch closer and closer. Along with preparing for the start of the season, the coaching staff is looking to stay on top of the recruiting world for not just the class of 2017, but for all classes that follow as well.

An elite offer to an elite player

A new offer went out to 2019 running back Devyn Ford (Stafford, VA / North Stafford) on Tuesday. Ford has not yet been evaluated by the major recruiting sites (because of his age), but his 19 total offers indicate that he'll be one of the tops at his position when the ranking do get released.

#OhioState offers elite 2019 @NSWolverines RB Devyn Ford @_dbatman_ https://t.co/RiQ8Ib5cta @RyanGinnBSB @BillBankGreene @BrianDohnScout

— Michael Clark (@MClarkScout) August 2, 2016

At 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, Ford possesses great speed and has plenty of time to continue to mature physically. Right now, Virginia Tech seems like the early favorite, with a slew of southern schools also occupying the top of his list. Currently, that list means just about nothing considering his age and all the visits that will be set up in the future. Urban Meyer has plenty of time to get the Buckeyes into a position to make a run for the elite Ford. This is a recruitment that should last his entire high school career and won't be one for the faint of heart.

Expect Ford to make lots of visits, as he's sure to be one of the best players in his class. Just watch his highlight reel.

In the chase

To 2018 news, current target Derrik Allen (Marietta, GA / Lassiter) has made it apparent that Ohio State and Georgia are the two schools pursuing him the hardest. Allen, a five-star cornerback, is rated the No.2 player at his position and No.21 overall in his class.

5-star CB Derrik Allen feels Ohio State and Georgia are pursuing him the hardest: https://t.co/QGCdU2MD5X pic.twitter.com/39OQaJHgQz

— Jeff Sentell (@jeffsentell) August 3, 2016

Allen has elite cornerback size at 6-foot-1 and also holds 31 total offers. Allen does not have a favorite at this point, but this is another case of where this recruitment could go the distance.

Currently, the two projections on the 247Sports Crystal Ball have Allen staying in the Peach State.

With so much time between now and National Signing Day for the 2018 class, a lot can change. Every school in America will be vying for the services of Allen over the next couple of years. Ohio State has fared well in the state of Georgia since Urban Meyer arrived and they will look to continue that trend.

Two of Ohio State's biggest stars are getting the recognition they deserve.

"First team: Center - Pat Elflein, Linebacker - Raekwon McMillan"

- Sports Illustrated

The preseason accolades keeping on coming for the leaders of the 2016 Ohio State Buckeyes. Center Pat Elflein and middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan have been mentioned on most of the award lists possible at their position and have now been named to Sports Illustrated's preseason All-America team. The duo were the only Buckeyes to make the list. Elflein was an All-American last season at guard but shifting over to center doesn't seem to have hurt his prospects in that regard. Should he lead Ohio State's offensive line again this season, Elflein could be looking at a very respectable draft pick and another appearance on the finalized version of the All-America team.

McMillan, meanwhile, enters his junior season in Columbus. The former five-star linebacker has already started to live up to the hype when Ohio State was recruiting him, seeing plenty of action as a true freshman and then last season as a starter in his own right. McMillan led the team in tackles last season and will look to do the same as he prepares for a professional career of his own. With a team so young on both sides of the ball, players like Elflein and McMillan are invaluable, especially in critical moments during games which the Buckeyes are sure to find themselves in this year.

"Not only will Elliott be the Cowboys' most impactful rookie, he very well could be the NFL's, too."

- Cameron DaSilva, FOX Sports

Cameron DaSilva of FOX Sports took the liberty of predicting which rookies would have the most impact in their first years for each team in the NFL. Ohio State's rookies represented well, as four of the Buckeyes drafted were named to the list. The first (and most obvious) was Ezekiel Elliott, playing for the Dallas Cowboys. With already building excitement by having the top jersey sales at NFL shop, Elliott is expected to be a centerpiece for the Cowboys offense this season and is even being taken high in fantasy football drafts with the potential to be great from day one. And with an offensive line that large and powerful, how could you not be excited for No. 15?

Also making the list were Michael Thomas in New Orleans (over Vonn Bell), Braxton Miller in Houston (over Will Fuller), and Taylor Decker in Detroit. Thomas has been reportedly having a fantastic camp for the Saints and has been one of the top performers during the offseason. Miller figures to touch the ball a fair share this season simply because of his versatility with the ability to carry the ball and also make catches which might give him a slight edge over Will Fuller out of Notre Dame. Decker looks like he'll be playing some right tackle this season but could eventually move over to left tackle where he's more comfortable down the line but will still have a huge impact on protecting Matthew Stafford for the Lions.

"You're not going to win ever rep. ... That humbles you. You will be humbled. It's fun, though. I love it."

- Darron Lee via Randy Lange, NewYorkJets.com

Another one of the rookie Ohio State players making the transition to the NFL is linebacker Darron Lee. Lee passed on coming back to Columbus for another season after making his mark on the program by helping the Buckeyes get a national championship and Fiesta Bowl win. Now, playing with the New York Jets, Lee is trying his best to get his mind up to speed, where his body has already caught up. As Lee mentions in the article, the practice grind is a marathon and not a sprint. Although Lee has shown to have good instincts and has the physicality to succeed on this level, the mental part is taking some more getting used to.

A freshman All-American in 2014 followed by a second-team All-American honor, Lee is smart enough of a football player to not be slowed down for long. The Jets have been pleased overall with their first-round pick, and have praised Lee's attitude and general lack of ego. Always a team player, Lee is set up for success in the NFL and should be fun to watch as the years progress.

The AP confirmed what Buckeye Nation already knew…The Ohio State University is the best team ever according to a collection of the previous 1,103 polls taking place over 80 years. According to the AP they determined this by a simple process:

To determine the all-time Top 25, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points).”

The result is the Buckeyes receiving a total of 1,112 points. Amazingly, over the 80 year period, the AP found the Buckeyes were not ranked at least once in only three seasons which is pretty cool.

Interestingly, the Buckeyes week three opponent, Oklahoma, was ranked second with 1,055 points. Two other Big Ten teams cracked the top 10; Nebraska at six (901 points) and Michigan at seven (894 points).

Amazingly, the SEC only had two teams in the top ten but undoubtedly their other twelve teams could collectively beat every other team at any time during the 80 year period.

This is awesome: The Associated Press, which operates the longest-running college football poll, published a top 25 Tuesday that ranks the nation’s best programs over the last 80 years (1936). No. 1? It’s Ohio State, the program that has been ranked in the poll for more weeks than any other team (852), including the most at No. 1 (105). Michigan (No. 7), Michigan State (No. 19), Wisconsin (No. 24) and Iowa (No. 25) also land on the list, as do current Big Ten members Nebraska (No. 6) and Penn State (No. 12), both of which experienced their best years pre-Big

That’s some honor for the program Woody, Jim Tressel, and Urban Meyer all had hands in.

While Michigan fans rallied around getting a basketball player on their football jerseys Tuesday, Buckeye faithful had a bit more to be excited about.

In the first ever Associated Press all-time Top 25, the Ohio State Buckeyes came out number one. The AP tabulated more than 1,100 weekly polls from over 80 years. The end result is based on total poll appearances, the number of times ranked No. 1 and AP national championships.

Joining the Buckeyes in the Top 5 are their opponents this fall, Oklahoma, at No. 2, Notre Dame at three, defending national champions Alabama at No. 4, and USC at No. 5. Michigan checked in 7th with Penn State 12th, Michigan State 19th, Wisconsin 24th, and Iowa 25th.

Now known as The AP Top 25, the power rankings originated with 20 teams, then was reduced to 10 teams from 1961 to 1967. The poll expanded back to 20 then later grew again to the 25 teams we’re accustomed to prior to the 1989 season.

Though no longer part of the formula that determines College Football’s primarily recognized national champion, the AP poll still awards its own national championship trophy as its done since the 30s. A panel of 61 voters make up the current Top 25 participants with 2016’s inaugural poll set to be released Sunday, Aug. 21.
