The unenjoyable grind of 2015 is a thing of the past.

When Urban Meyer is inevitably inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the prelude to his acceptance speech will read similar to an introduction to Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones.

"You are in the presence of Urban Meyer, King of the Buckeye State, hoister of championship trophies, flipper of five-star athletes, breaker of That Team up North, and father of the zone read."

Just 14 years into his head coaching career, Meyer is already an all-timer. He’s won three national titles with two schools, boasts a staggering record of 154-27, and has coached generational talents such as Ezekiel Elliot and Tim Tebow.

With Meyer as your coach, top-5 recruiting classes feel like a birthright and 20-game win streaks are customary. But the ability to create a culture that permeates a program from the first-string quarterback to the walk-on long snapper could be Meyer’s finest quality.

Four to six, A to B. It’s an idiom that players and coaches toss around like footballs at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. When Meyer came to Ohio State in 2012, he felt that the team did not have a clear directive on every play, which led to overthinking and under-performing athletes. Meyer wants players to react on instinct and play fast, getting from point A to point B before the opposition in four to six seconds, the average time of a play in college football.

Nine Strong. Power of the Unit. These mottos reference another pillar of Meyer’s culture machine. You see, there are nine position groups on the football team. Each has to play at its maximum capacity for the Buckeyes to reach their ultimate goal.

Prior to the 2013 season, Meyer enacted his most known and celebrated mantra to date. The Chase. After watching Alabama steamroll Notre Dame in the 2013 BCS Championship Game from the sidelines, Meyer realized that his program was not even close to the championship-caliber level of the Crimson Tide. The Chase was on.

Two years and five days later, Meyer and the Buckeyes captured the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship, trouncing Oregon in the final game just a week after gashing Nick Saban’s defense in the Sugar Bowlsemifinal. As the Scarlet and Grey soaked in the moment amidst the confetti-littered sky of Jerry World, Meyer made an almost predictable proclamation.

"The Chase is complete," he told ESPN reporter Tom Rinaldi. "It’s done, it’s over."

But Meyer wasn’t finished at Ohio State. Neither was the core of the national championship team. With almost every key contributor returning, expectations were at an all-time high in Columbus.

Meyer knew what these expectations meant. In 2009 his Florida Gators returned essentially everyone from their 2008 national championship squad. As the Gators chased perfection, Meyer lost control of his health and his passion for coaching. His drive for a seemingly unattainable goal eventually drove him away from the sidelines in 2010, and he questioned if he would ever coach football again.

Ohio State entered the 2015 season as the AP's first ever unanimous top-ranked team. Almost unprecedented expectations surrounded the program. Meyer challenged his players to embrace the fact that they were the hunted in college football, and as such 2015 was decreed the year of The Grind. Unfortunately, this would become a self-fulfilling prophecy for the team and fans alike.

The undercurrent of the entire season was the debacle at quarterback, as Ohio State seemingly tried to prove the age-old saying, if you have two quarterbacks, you really have none. Cardale Jones never looked like the gunslinger who sliced through Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon in that memorable postseason run. The play calling also suffered as Meyer attempted to integrate new quarterbacks' coach Tim Beck in the booth as Ed Warinner called plays from the sideline while also coaching the offensive line. At times it seemed as if the staff was calling a J.T. Barrett-game for Jones, asking the hulking QB to play outside of his skill set in the option run game while never finding a down-field threat to capitalize on his patented 12-gauge arm.

The team seemed to regain its championship form when Barrett supplanted Jones before the Rutgers game, one of the few times the Scarlet and Grey clicked offensively all year en route to a 49-7 drubbing of the Scarlet Knights. But the feeling of dread would soon return to the program, as Barrett was suspended for a DUI during the ensuing bye week

You all know the story from here. All of the Buckeyes’ flaws were exposed on a soggy November afternoon in the Horseshoe, as the offense managed a meager 132 yards against Michigan State in a 17-14 loss on senior day. Warinner was promptly moved to the press box a week later and the offense immediately appeared light-years better. OSU smashed Michigan in Ann Arbor and outscored Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, looking every bit like the best college team in America. But it was too late.

No national championship. No playoff. No conference title. Not even a divisional crown. And as twelve members of the 2015 team heard their names called during the first four rounds of last spring’s NFL Draft, Ohio State fans couldn’t help but to think what if. It can be argued that last year’s team was the most talented in school history. It could also be argued that last year was the least fun one-loss season in the history of sport.

As the smell of fresh cut grass and football fills the air, Ohio State fans count the days to the September 3rd opener against Bowling Green with guarded optimism. Sure, the Buckeyes return only six starters. But who thought Ezekiel Elliot would be better than Carlos Hyde when he took over running back duties in 2014? Why can’t Malik Hooker be better thanTyvis Powell at safety? He was a higher-ranked recruit, after all.

At quarterback there is no controversy, Barrett is the guy. In the booth there is clarity, with Warinner calling plays from up high from day one. There will still be pressure in Columbus, as is typical for any blue-blood program. But there won’t be an expectation to win every game by half a hundred points. And it won’t be disappointing if the young Bucks win tight games while displaying growing pains.

Meyer has dubbed this season the year of The Edge, which illustrates the line between being an average player and a great one. Ultimately, Ohio State’s ability to cross that line will determine whether this is a playoff-caliber team, or if this season will serve as a tune-up for a championship run in 2017.

Either way, the dark cloud of unreasonable expectations has faded in Central Ohio. The Buckeyes are no longer chasing perfection. The Grind is over, both literally and figuratively. It's OK to enjoy Ohio State football again.

Ohio State currently has 16 members in its recruiting class of 2017. The Buckeyes will likely have that class finish somewhere between 18 and 22 players when its all said and done, meaning they still have a little work to do before National Signing Day.

Back in February 2013, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and his coaching staff were able to sign 24 players in a recruiting class that was ranked second in the country by 247Sports. Of these 24 players, Ohio State only lost three to transfer or dismissal, meaning 21 players have either started for or contributed to Ohio State since 2013.

Part one dealt with the departed players. Part two will focus upon those players who have been contributors to Ohio State, with the caveat that some of these players may even emerge as starters by the conclusion of the 2016 season. Those players will be listed below, in the order that they committed to Ohio State.

Ohio State Recruiting – August Update

tg-150x150.jpg

We are less than three weeks away from kickoff for the Buckeye 2016 football season, but we are also less than a week away from two of the most awaited decisions in college football recruiting for the class of 2017. The Buckeyes have been recruiting at a level that has been unseen in Columbus or across the nation for that matter, and they look to continue that trend this month. Let’s take a look at the prospects that Ohio State are still chasing for the class of 2017 and put a prediction on where they will end up shall we?

Tyjon Lindsey – WR – Corona, CA – 4-Star – 5th Ranked WR

Tyjon Lindsey is set to make his decision public this month on the 22nd of August and it looks to be between the Buckeyes and the Cornhuskers with an outside chance of USC sneaking in. Lindsey has visited Nebraska a few times over the past few months, but his last visit was to Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights camp back in July where he got to work out with former teammate and Buckeye commit Tate Martell. The Buckeyes feel pretty confident heading into his decision date, and Zach Smith has been recruiting Lindsey hard to come in and play a role as the slot receiver in this offense. Right now the crystal balls are in favor of Lindsey selecting the Buckeyes on the 22nd, and I am right there with them.

My Take: Ohio State Buckeye

Trevon Grimes – WR – Ft. Lauderdale, FL – 5-Star – 3rd Ranked WR

Grimes has been a Buckeye lean since what seems like forever now, and it would be a huge surprise if he picks anyone else but Ohio State on August 24th. He attends St. Thomas Aquinas High School down in Florida, which has been home to the Bosa family and former Buckeye great Cris Carter has been known to roam the sidelines down there as well, so Ohio State is well represented. Grimes will make his decision between the Buckeyes, Alabama, Miami (FL), Florida, and Georiga.

My Take: Ohio State Buckeye

Cam Akers – RB – Clinton, MS – 5-Star – 2nd Ranked RB

Cam Akers has probably been on the top of Ohio State’s recruiting board since he decommitted from Alabama back in March. They already have one back in the fold in J.K. Dobbins, but adding a second is something that the coaching staff is trying to do as there will only be four backs on scholarship after this season and depth will become an issue. Akers visited and was supposed to return for Friday Night Lights, but was unable to make it, so getting him on campus this fall for an official will go a long way to securing a verbal from one of the most sought after backs in the country. However, it has been said that if Akers were to commit to the Buckeyes that J.K. Dobbins would start to look elsewhere, and while I would take Akers over Dobbins in this class, the Buckeyes really need to get two solid running backs to add to the depth chart.

My Take: Ohio State Buckeye

Jeffrey Okudah – S – Grand Prairie, Texas – 5-Star – 1st Ranked Safety

The Buckeyes are still looking to Texas to secure a key piece to the defensive future in Jeffrey Okudah. Okudah has made a couple of unofficial visits to the campus of Ohio State, and it is yet to be determined if he will make an official visit this fall. Okudah has 30+ scholarship offers from all over the nation, but has been favoring the Buckeyes for quite a while. Oklahoma has been the team that has come on strong of late, and have been making a big push to try and land Okudah. He visited Norman back in June, and this visit seemed to vault the Sooners into a neck and neck race with the Buckeyes for his services. It is always tough to pull kids from Texas, but with the likes of J.T. Barrett and Dontre Wilson hailing from the Longhorn State, and Tim Beck being a relentless recruiter in the state, I like the Buckeyes chances with this one.

My Take: Ohio State Buckeye

Baron Browning – LB – Kennedale, TX – 5-Star – 2nd Ranked OLB

Another 5-Star talent out of the state of Texas, Baron Browning would fill a nice need at linebacker for the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes currently have commitments from Antjuan Simmons and Brendan White at linebacker, but with Raekwon McMillian likely off to the NFL after this season, there could be a battle for playing time with not a lot of returning minutes coming back. Browning was thought to be at one time pretty much a done deal to the Buckeyes, but the home state Longhorns have come on strong recently and have made it a priority to keep the nations top linebacker at home. There are a few other guys that Texas is targeting, and receiving a commitment from one of them might help the cause of the Buckeyes gaining Browning’s commitment, and I don’t expect the Buckeyes to be in it for any other linebackers from this class.

My Take: Ohio State Buckeye

Jay Tufele – DT – South Jordan, UT – 4-Star – 3rd Ranked DT

The Buckeyes have had their issues over the past few years signing top flight defensive tackles, and they are hoping that this is the year that changes. Right now the Buckeyes have Jerron Cage and Haskell Garrett verbally committed and are hot on the pursuit of the third ranked defensive tackle in the country in Jay Tufele. Tufele listed Ohio State his leader back in May, and since then his recruitment has gone pretty silent. Oregon and Michigan seem to be the biggest threats to the Buckeyes landing quite possibly the top defensive tackle class in the country. Expect Tufele to take his officials this fall and get acquainted with the coaching staffs at each school before making his decision.

My Take: Ohio State Buckeye

Lamont Wade – CB – Clairton, PA – 4-Star – 6th Ranked CB

What once looked like a for sure bet to be included in the #1 class in America, Lamont Wade’s recruitment has taken a bit of a turn. While he attended Friday Night Lights, Amir Riep became the third defensive back in the class that same weekend joining Shaun Wade and Marcus Williamson. While Shaun Wade’s commitment has been less than 100% (even though he claims it is), the Buckeyes at this time do not have any more room in their class. If Shaun Wade were to change his recruitment and end up elsewhere, then things might be different for Lamont Wade. Because of the scholarship situation being so tight, this might have to be one of those times when the Buckeyes have to pass on an elite corner and hopefully end up not regretting it.

My Take: Pittsburgh Panthers

Darnay Holmes – DB – Calabasas, CA – 5-Star – 2nd Ranked DB

Again the numbers don’t bode well for Holmes, but if he were seriously interested in the Buckeyes I believe that he would be a take and worry about it later situation. He visited for Friday Night Lights and is scheduled to be back in November for an official visit as well. He holds 25 offers to date, and UCLA, Nebraska, Stanford and Michigan seem to be the biggest competitors for his services. It will be interesting to see if he does take his official visit in November and what the state of the Buckeye recruiting class looks like then.

My Take: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Jaylen Harris – WR – Cleveland, OH – 4-Star – 27th Ranked WR

We will find out shortly if there is room in the class of 2017 for Jaylen Harris as Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes are set to make thier choices next week. If either one of them were to pick someone other than Ohio State, then Jaylen Harris becomes a Buckeye in my opinion. However, as I have projected above I do not see that happening and I believe that will leave Harris on the outside looking in. Harris would have been a sure fire recruit in the Jim Tressel days, as he hails from Ohio, but the tides have turned with Urban Meyer going more national, and it looks like he will be a casualty because of it.

My Take: Tennessee Volunteers

Donovan Peoples-Jones – WR – Detroit, MI – 5-Star – 1st Ranked WR

At one point I thought there was an outside shot that the Buckeyes would be able to land Lindsey, Grimes and Peoples-Jones, but that has since gone by the wayside. The dwindling scholarship numbers plus the fact that Michigan has been all over Peoples-Jones leads me to believe that this one is all but over. As a matter of fact I am surprised that he has not already committed to the Wolverines, which lends a little bit of hope to all the other programs out there.

My Take: Michigan Wolverines

Signs point to Lindsey heading back to Bishop Gorman

Lindsey back to Bishop Gorman?

Back in February of this year, 2017 wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey announced that he was transferring from Bishop Gorman (NV) and heading to Centennial (CA) to play his senior season. However, as of Wednesday, that looks like it will not be coming to fruition.

According to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times, Lindsey has not attended practice for the Huskies this week. Sondheimer also spoke with Centennial Head Coach Matt Logan, who stated that he expects the speedy wideout to head back to Bishop Gorman. Likewise for Raymond Brewer of the Las Vegas Sun, who wrote that Lindsey is back in Nevada and is attempting to come back to the Gaels.

What does this mean for Ohio State? Maybe in the grand scheme, not much. The Buckeyes already seemed to be the favorite to land the 5-foot-8, 180-pounder and an overwhelming percentage of predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball all but confirm that.

With that being said, it certainly won’t hurt to have 2017 quarterback Tate Martell, an Ohio State commit, delivering passes to you once again.

Lindsey is expected to make his collegiate choice next Monday on the 22nd. The schools in the running for the consensus top 5 WR include Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Oregon and Ohio State.

USA Today honors 5 future Bucks

USA Today released the 2016 American Family Insurance All-USA preseason team and future Buckeyes littered the list of prospects. On offense, ‘17 offensive tackle Josh Myers (Miamisburg, OH / Miamisburg) and ‘17 offensive guard Wyatt Davis (Bellflower, CA / St. John Bosco), Ohio State’s two highest rated pledges, made the list. Tate Martell, who was mentioned earlier, was named as an honorable mention.

On the defensive side, two soon-to-be Buckeye defensive backs received the honor of making the team. 2017 safety Isaiah Pryor from IMG Academy (FL) and ‘17 cornerback Shaun Wade from Trinity Christian Academy (FL) too the honors.

Lastly, for special teams, it was three-star ‘17 kicker Blake Haubeil from Christian (NY) who rounded out the list.

Ohio State lead all programs with the most verbal commitments to be named to the All-USA preseason team for the list. As mentioned above, five future Buckeyes were selected. The closest programs to that mark were the Crimson Tide of Alabama and Georgia – who both had three.

Other potential Buckeyes to be included on the list would be ‘17 RB Cam Akers, ‘17 LB Baron Browning, ‘17 RB Najee Harris (Alabama commit), ‘17 LB Anthony Hines, ‘17 CB Christian Holmes, ‘17 WR Trevon Grimes, ‘17 S Jeffrey Christian, and ‘17 WR Donovan Peoples-Jones.

LGHL Former Ohio State LB Ryan Shazier used his alopecia to become a better person and player

Former Ohio State LB Ryan Shazier used his alopecia to become a better person and player

Being able to laugh helped Shazier in the short and long term.

“[Ryan] Shazier doesn't know if hairlessness caters to the law of aerodynamics, but he laughed anyway. It was a laugh, after all, two decades in the making.

- Aditi Kinkhabwala, NFL.com

Ryan Shazier looks like any other football player when he’s in full uniform, helmet included. But when the helmet comes off, Shazier is notably hairless, outside of a clump under his chin. This is due to the alopecia Shazier was born with, an autoimmune disease that tackles hair follicles. Despite this, Shazier’s parents told him growing up that nothing was wrong with him, and to laugh off the detractors, and that’s exactly what he’s done. Shazier told Kinkhabwala, "That would make kids so mad," he says, smiling as he thinks back. "I used to laugh so much. Even still now, I laugh. I'm not sick, so why not?"

That good attitude that Shazier has kept has translated onto the football field. Kinkhabwala notes, “There's nary a groan after a three-hour training camp practice.” That’s something you want from a guy who is one of the key pieces of your defense. And Shazier is expected to make big strides this season, continuing a great lineage of Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers. Shazier is finally healthy after missing 11 games in two years, and is more than ready to go. He told Kinkhabwala, "Some people say I play too hard, but that's how I play. Troy played the same way," referencing the great Troy Polamalu. That’s a pretty good player to look up to in terms of style. Hopefully it leads to a career-year for the former Buckeye.

“At this point, the buzz around Thomas is so deafening that he is sure to be drafted too high in just about every fantasy league.”

- Mike Triplett, ESPN

Despite the above sentence possibly seeming like a knock on Thomas, it’s surely not. The hype growing around Michael Thomas is far, especially when you consider who is throwing the ball to him in future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. He’s a physical receiver who has come up with some great mentors around him, including his uncle Keyshawn Johnson. The quarterback situation at Ohio State last year surely had an effect on him, but there’s no questioning Thomas’ talent.

So if you’re drafting in fantasy and Thomas is within reach, he’s not a bad pick. Triplett says that Thomas’ red-zone targets should be fairly high, while still able to make big plays down the field. Triplett also says that he’s gotten the trust of head coach Sean Payton, which a great thing considering he’s one of the best coaches in the game.

“Mangold was our top-ranked center in five of the 10 years he bestrode the position like a colossus, playing nearly 11,000 snaps over that period.”

- Neil Hornsby, Pro Football Focus

Pro Football Focus and Neil Hornsby have released their all-decade team, with the best players from 2006-2015. Their center, is none other than former Ohio State Buckeye Nick Mangold, who has clearly been one of the best in the league since he came in with the New York Jets.

Hornsby goes as far as to say, “If we had the Dwight Stephenson Award (given to the best player in football over the course of one season, regardless of position) from PFF’s inception, I maintain Nick Mangold would have won it on more than one occasion.” That’s pretty high praise for a guy who isn’t playing a skill position, and when you take into account some of the great players that have played across the NFL in the past decade.

“Ohio State Buckeyes: No. 10”

- Dane Brugler, CBS Sports

CBS Sports is doing a countdown of the most NFL talent-rich programs, and the Ohio State Buckeyes came in at No. 10 on their list. The Buckeyes have had 140 picks in the NFL Draft since 1994, which is the most in college football according to Brugler. They’ve had 57 picks in the past 10 years, and 30 in the past five. The 2016 NFL Draft was notably great for the Buckeyes, who had 12 players selected in the draft, with five of them going in the first round, and 10 in the first three rounds.

Tyvis Powell, Jalin Marshall, and Chase Farris were all players who signed deals as undrafted free agents. It was truly a testament to how great Urban Meyer and his staff have been recruiting since his arrival in 2012. Brugler highlights the most likely draftees next year, including Sam Hubbard, Raekwon McMillan, Pat Elflein, Gareon Conley, Tyquan Lewis, Billy Price, as well as J.T. Barrett. He also lists seven other draft-eligible prospects. Depending on how Ohio State’s season goes, it could be another very lucrative draft for the Buckeyes in 2017.

To this point, 20 year old Kyle Snyder has enjoyed success in the two main avenues of American wrestling: freestyle (think international and Olympics) and folkstyle (high school and college). The wildest ride by far has been in folkstyle.

Kyle’s older brother Stephen was a two time Maryland state high school champ who went on to a stellar career at West Point. His younger brother Kevin had been accepted to wrestle at the Naval Academy until those pesky and exacting military physical admission requirements (vision, etc) got in the way. This fall he will join Kyle on the Ohio State wrestling team.

Kyle is a double whammy tweener in the sense that he is a full 97kg freestyler, meaning he has to work hard to get to his freestyle weight of 213.4 pounds, and even harder to get to the collegiate weight of 197 pounds.

This stretch presents a common problem. In both freestyle and college, 197 pounds and 97kg represent the last refuge before a wrestler is forced into the huge void between those weights and the last, heaviest weights: 285 pounds in college and 125kg (275 pounds) in freestyle. The heavy weight divisions are such that it is very difficult for a wrestler to be successful at less than about 6’3″ in height, because it is that length which can really take on the muscle mass necessary to compete with the top tier guys who have packed as much strength as they can into 275-285 pounds.

So what you have at 197 or 213.4 pounds are all the guys shorter than 6’3″ (which is going to be a much more competitive number than the guys at 6’3″ or taller) packing all the power and muscle on they can to avoid making the huge leap in class. In this sense, it really is a muscle man mauler of a weight class.

As a true collegiate freshman coming off two consecutive trips to the junior world finals, Kyle was certainly ready to compete at a high level for Ohio State. His first early test came at the December, 2014 Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas against Missouri sophomore J’Den Cox who eight months earlier had won an NCAA title by hanging on to avoid a last second takedown in the finals by Ohio State’s Nick Heflin.

Snyder lost a close one to Cox, an old nemesis, but not so much because of any difference in talent. Indeed, a lack of experience at the collegiate level seemed more at issue, something that would occur again in Kyle’s other regular season loss as a freshman.

For the most part though, Kyle dominated in the regular season, riding to a B1G tourney final match-up in Columbus against Morgan McIntosh of Penn State. McIntosh, a fireplug of a strongman just seemed like a hard match-up for Snyder. The resulting close win by McIntosh sent Snyder to the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis as a four seed.

A four seed meant Snyder would have to meet up with Cox in the semi-finals, but this time Snyder prevailed in a close but convincing win, sending him to the finals against Kyven Gadsen of Iowa State.

The Buckeyes had clinched its first national championship in the medal round that preceded the championship bouts. When 184 pound Kenny Courts took fifth place in his magical tournament run, Ohio State put enough points between itself and the field that it did not matter what happened from there on.

The 2015 tournament was dominated by the fact that Buckeye Logan Stieber was shooting to become only the fourth NCAA wrestler to win four national titles. Thus the order was set so that Stieber’s 141 match would be last. Given that Buckeye 125 pounder Nathan Tomasello had also streaked to the finals, the coronation of Ohio State as team champion would be highlighted with Buckeyes going for three titles in the last five matches, starting with Kyle’s 197 pound title bout.

Kyle emerged from the smokey tunnel and bounded on stage confident he would be the next four time NCAA winner, starting then. Snyder thrives on lightning quick ankle attacks. Although everyone in the world knows they are coming, his strength, mobility and trigger points are such that they cannot be stopped.

And so it was with Gadsen–Kyle got in quickly but had some trouble pulling in the powerful Gadsen’s leg, so to gain leverage, Kyle stood up, bringing Gadsen with him. Whether out of exuberance or simply bad luck, Kyle found himself upright in an uprotected position. Gadsen caught caught Snyder’s leg at the same time he had an under/over shoulder lock. Like spinning the wheel on a large boat, Gadsen easily tripped Snyder, spun him to his back and quickly administered a mind-numbing fall.

Snyder, stunned, accepted Gadsen’s handshake, put is head down and exited past a speechless Buckeye coach Ross Thatcher. While Tomasello and Stieber would go on to win titles and the team would revel in its historic moment, Snyder could not escape is own crushing, dream shattering defeat.

The course of events would erase the pain as the months unfolded. Although eligible to compete in the junior worlds, Snyder elected to go in the senior division, making history as he won the US Open and US Team Trials. He then shocked the world by winning a world team title in September, 2015.

The Ohio State coaches had no trouble suggesting to Kyle that he redshirt from Ohio State to concentrate solely on the Olympics, meaning Ohio State would try to defend its NCAA title without the volume of points that surely would come from a runner-up from 2015.

I ran into Coach Ryan at the US Open in Las Vegas in December, 2015. Because of the Olympic schedule the Open was being held before the end of the collegiate season so that the Olympic Trials could take place to provide a decent gap between the start of the Olympics.

Coach Ryan held a secret. With the success of Tomasello and Buckeye brothers Bo and Micah Jordan, Ryan knew things could be looking up, especially if Hunter Stieber could return from his elbow injuries. He revealed he was planning to pull the redshirt of freshman sensation Myles Martin (a prescient move–Martin himself would stun wrestling fans by winning a national title a few months later).

But Ryan was not done. He smiled as I tried to guess what else he had in mind. Kyle Snyder had bigger fish to fry, and besides, he could not get down to 197 pounds in March to compete at 213.4 at the Olympic Trials the next month. That would crazy. I nearly swallowed my tongue when Ryan whispered Kyle was coming back at 285! Kyle Snyder is awesome, but a 213 pound wrestler competing at 285 is kind of like a 125 pounder competing at 174. No $%&0 way man!

But that is what Snyder did. He won a few regular season matches and then breezed through the B1G brackets to face Michigan’s highly successful Adam Coon. At 6’5″ Coon was an NCAA runner-up the year before. In the B1G finals, Snyder simply took the taller Coon down with ankle picks time and time again to head to the NCAA championships in Madison Square Garden as a B1G champion.

What could have been a better script? The most iconic arena in America. The youngest world champion in US history, potentially facing two time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina State. Nearly as tall as Coon but twice as strong. As good as Snyder obviously is, not many really gave him a chance against Gwiz.

The two breezed to the finals, and in recognition of the magnitude of the event, a heavyweight match was set up as the true ultimate finale. In what many believe is the greatest collegiate heavyweight match of all time, Snyder seemed overpowered at first. He was able to get to Gwiz’ legs with ease, but the hulking Wolfpack defending champ would easily muscle out.

As the match wound down to its final 30 seconds Snyder trailed by 2 points. At this point, the one physical advantage Snyder had–conditioning was starting to emerge. But Snyder knew if he took Gwiz down to soon, he would not have the strength to hold on. Think about that–a wrestler in need of points at the end of the match, waited until the final seconds to strike. Such is the confidence and skill of Snyder who proceeded to do just that to send the match into overtime.

In overtime, Snyder was able to get to Gwiazdowski’s legs, but this time Gwiz was without the energy to work his way out. When a torso flip failed, Gwiz gave into reality, relaxed his grip and surrendered the match losing sudden death points to Snyder.

Nearby is an instant Ohio State classic photo. In it are Snyder and Gwiz as the winning takedown is given. Coach Thatcher can be seen leaping into the rafters. And there is Coach Ryan, pointing and running in youthful and unbounded joy. While Coach Ryan has witnessed exhilarating highs, he has also felt the devastating lows life can deliver.

When Kyle Snyder committed to come to Ohio State he wanted to put a smile on his coach’s face. You can be sure this picture embraces all he could have wanted to achieve in college as his coach expresses the indescribable high Kyle’s enormous talent has brought.

Need a BBQ Baby Back Ribs Recipe

So it's Wednesday today, I'm making Ribs for buddies of mine on Friday after work. I'm cooking on a gas grill (yes, I know what the pundits say), but that's what I have and that's what I'm using.

I need a good recipe for a rub and a sauce( I actually like sweet baby rays) or whatever you can give me and directions. I seriously have never tried ribs on the grill (shameful) but it's my house they are coming to so game on. There are three of us eating.

I've read to pre cook in the oven, don't pre cook, indirect, cook 2 hours, 4 hours. there is so much confusing, crazy info was hoping my BP contingent has some good recipes I can use.

I'm praying...... a thousand blessings in advance to you!!!

How would the conference be different now if realignment broke a different way?

If there’s been one constant story for this offseason, beyond silly Harbaugh controversies, it’s been Big 12 expansion and realignment. Will they add two teams? Four teams? Which ones? Will TV force the conference to disintegrate? Balloon? It’s already made schools create promotional materials to brag about video games, or mail meat to other university administrators.

If there is one thing an even cursory look at college football history tells us, it’s that there’s nothing new under the sun. People have been hollering about recruiting violations and improper benefits since Chicago’s Big Ten Team was, well, Chicago. They’ve fret over technical innovations ruining the game of football since the forward pass. And the Big 12 has worried about the outsized influence of Texas and TV revenue since before there was even a Big 12.

Sports Illustrated’s Joan Niesen put together a thoughtful and interesting oral history of the Big 12 conference that is worth a read for anybody who is interested in conference realignment, the future of the Big 12, and the business aspects of this weird, wonderful sports.

But this isn’t just a story about the Big 12. The early 1990s brought on another era of college football realignment. As former Iowa State coach Jim Walden adds in the story, “At that time, hell, everything was changing. It was a fruit basket turnover in college football. Good god.” Florida State joined the ACC. Arkansas bolted the SWC for the SEC. Penn State joined the Big Ten.

And amidst all this chaos, the Big Ten could have gotten even bigger. It’s worth a reminder: the Big Ten could have grabbed Texas. Or others!

Here’s former Kansas State university president Jon Wefald:

Notre Dame was being wooed by the Big Ten. The Big Ten was saying, we might be going for Kansas or Missouri. They even had overtures to Texas. My worry was that Texas would join the Pac-10. Texas is a great school. Academically, it's the best in the Big 12.

Kansas and Missouri, of course, were names bandied about during the Big Ten’s most recent raid of the Big 12, when they added Nebraska. They’re both midwestern, they’re both AAU institutions, and intuitively, they make some sense. But Texas is something else entirely.

Lest anybody think that this speculation is from a source that wouldn’t know, Bill Cunningham, former University of Texas president and chancellor, also added that “The Big Ten, our timing was a little wrong for them. They would have liked to have Texas.”

Elsewhere in the article, even Iowa State — which hey, is also in the AAU — was mentioned as a possible Big Ten expansion candidate, a name that you basically never hear about now.

Sure, Texas isn’t geographically close to any Big Ten institution from the 1990s, but it isn’t hard to see the hypothetical appeal. The conference wasn’t the punching bag it became in the national press in the late 2000s, and academically, it would have been a strong fit for the AAU, research-focused school. A Big Ten with Texas, fresh off the heels of grabbing Penn State, could have made the Big Ten potentially an even more massive player in the sport.

It’s fun to try and imagine the alternate history that would have sprung from this. Maryland and Rutgers are almost certainly not in the conference. Does Nebraska join? Does the Big Ten go to 14 and add other more western programs, like Missouri and Kansas? Would this have been enough to pry Notre Dame? Does the Big Ten Network ever get created? What would happen to the rest of the SWC or the Big Eight? If nothing else, the makeup of what we consider the “Power 5” would almost certainly be different had Texas joined the Big Ten back in the early 1990s.

The fundamentals behind what made Texas a potentially attractive property for the Big Ten haven’t changed that much, even if the financials of the television industry are different. It will be interesting to see if the conference decides to take another swing at the Longhorns once this current Big 12 television contract is over, especially if the Big 12 doesn’t end up expanding after all.

It’s a fun alternate history to think about, and there’s some solid proof that it wasn’t as crazy of an idea as it sounds.

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

Texas LB Sets Decision Date

One of the bigger targets left for the class of 2017 might be Texas linebacker Baron Browning. The Buckeyes have Antjuan Simmons and Branden White already committed at the position, but the Buckeyes are always looking to add depth, and when a 5-Star wants to join the class it is hard to say no. Recently however, Browning has been spotted on Texas’s campus, and he has a strong relationship with current Longhorn Malik Jefferson.

Browning has over 40 offers to date, but this one seems to be down to the Buckeyes and the Longhorns with Baylor, TCU and others still in consideration. Browning is making his college choice known right after Thanksgiving, and the Buckeyes are hoping they can get him back on campus before then for an official visit to try and strengthen their chances on landing this prized recruit. Browning has one visit set up to Alabama on November 26th, which is right before his decision date.

USA Today All-American Team is Buckeye Heavy

USA Today has released their All-American teams for both offense and defense, and the Buckeyes are well represented in both commitments and potential commitments on both sides of the ball.

Current Commitments:

Wyatt Davis – OT – Bellflower, CA

Blake Haubeil – K – Buffalo, NY

Josh Myers – OT – Miamisburg, OH

Isaiah Pryor – DB – Brandeton, FL

Shaun Wade – DB – Jacksonville, FL

Tate Martell – QB – Las Vegas, NV (Honorable Mention)

Buckeye Targets:

Trevon Grimes – WR – Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Donovan Peoples-Jones – WR – Detroit, MI

Cam Akers – RB – Clinton, MI

Baron Browning – LB – Kennedale, TX

Anthony Hines – LB – Plano, TX

Darnay Holmes – DB – Calabasas, CA

Jeffrey Okudah – DB – Grand Prairie, TX

Marvin Wilson – DL – Bellaire, TX

The Buckeyes have 5 commitments on both sides of the ball, and the rest of the Big Ten has 2 total: Dylan McCaffrey, QB for Michigan and Louis Acceus, LB for Michigan State. The Buckeyes remain in solid position for Grimes who decides next week, and are the leaders so far for Akers, Browning and Okudah. The Buckeyes continue to recruit at a pace unseen in Ohio State history, and seem to continue to distance themselves from the rest of the Big Ten.

Other Commitments and their Ohio State Impact

A couple of schools picked up commitments over the past week that could impact other players who are considering Ohio State. Tennessee picked up a commitment from 4-Star Ty Chandler on Monday. Tennessee is one of the schools that was high on Cam Akers list of potential suitors, so with them getting a verbal from Chandler, that might trim the list down for Akers. Although the Buckeyes already have a running back committed to the class of 2017 (JK Dobbins) as well, so it might not have as big of an impact as we think. Akers is a 5-Star kid, who decommitted from Alabama and has been a top recruiting priority for the Buckeyes. Akers still has Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State as schools he is high on, with no decision date set yet.

Penn State also picked up a big commitment this week in 2018 TE Pat Freirmuth out of Massachusetts. The Nittany Lions were the supposed leaders for the #1 TE in the nation Zack Kuntz from Pennsylvania, so will this commitment have any effect on him? It is really too early to say, as the class of 2018 can make so many changes between today and February of 2018. Will James Franklin still be the head coach at Penn State next year?

Kuntz camped at Ohio State last month during Friday Night Lights and holds a Buckeye offer. The Buckeyes are going after almost all of the top 2018 TE prospects as they have decided to skip recruiting that position this year after landing three of them last recruiting cycle. I expect the Buckeyes to take two tight ends in the 2018 class and I would expect them to put on a full-court press on Kuntz now that they have something to use against Penn State (not that we would ever negatively recruit).
