The Buckeyes will face a long path if they want to earn the Big Ten’s auto-bid.

The Big Ten regular season is now in the books, and that means the Big Ten Tournament bracket is finally set.

Ohio State earned the 11 seed, which means they’ll need to play in the tournament’s opening game. They’ll face Rutgers, who finished last in the conference. But don’t let that fool you, the Scarlet Knights are significantly improved, and Ohio State only barely beat them earlier in the year, winning 70-64.

Should Ohio State win, they’ll face Northwestern, who grabbed the six seed (the Wildcats squeaked past Ohio State earlier in the year, 74-72), and then Maryland, who grabbed the three seed. The Terps beat Ohio State both times this season.

If the Buckeyes want to make the Big Dance, they’re going to need to win the whole dang Big Ten Tournament, which will be a tall order. But if they can beat Rutgers, which is no guarantee, they have a chance to pick up at least one more win, and solidify what could be a good NIT seed.

The full bracket can be found below. Ohio State will face Rutgers at 7:00 PM ET on Wednesday.

The Buckeyes overcame a comeback attempt by the Knights to stay undefeated on the season.

The 20th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men's lacrosse team narrowly escaped a comeback attempt by the Bellarmine Knights, winning their second game of the weekend 14-11 after leading by as many as seven goals. Ohio State faced Bellarmine in game two of the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Milwaukee, having defeated Marquette, the host team, Friday night by a score of 12-6.

Similar to Friday’s game against Marquette, the Buckeyes got off to a slow start on both sides of the ball, going down 2-0 early on in the first quarter as Bellarmine scored twice in 44 seconds. Ohio State came back by quarter’s end, however, on goals by freshman attackman Lukas Buckley, assisted by fellow freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire, and freshman midfielder Ryan Terefenko.

Junior attackman Colin Chell’s goal 1:13 into the third quarter gave the Buckeyes their first lead of the game--a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Buckley added his second goal of the game just 11 seconds later, with senior attackman Eric Fannell extending the Buckeyes’ lead to three on his first goal of the game with 12:30 remaining in the quarter. Though a Bellarmine goal closed the gap to two, Chell found the back of the net once again to maintain Ohio State’s advantage on a man-up situation. Leclaire added his first goal of the game before Chell earned his hat trick with his third score. Junior midfielder Bo Lori continued the Buckeyes’ run, scoring his first goal of the season midway through the quarter. Leclaire then scored his second goal of the game before Bellarmine finally found the back of the net, ending a five-goal run for the Buckeyes, who headed to the break leading 10-4.

Bellarmine, however, would not go down so easy, opening the third quarter with a goal to close the Buckeyes’ lead to five. Freshman attackman Nick Musci found the back of the net with 10:00 left in the third, but the Knights would score two more goals to close the gap. Senior attackman Austin Shanks added another goal for Ohio State to recover the Buckeyes’ five-point lead. Bellarmine scored once more before Fannell added his second goal of the game to close the third quarter with a 13-8 lead.

The Knights opened the fourth quarter with a goal, but senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh answered with what would be the Buckeyes’ last score of the game. Bellarmine would score twice more in the final quarter, but Ohio State would hold them off for the win.

Chell led the Buckeyes in scoring with three goals on the day, while Buckley, Fannell and Leclaire each had two. Fannell also had three assists, giving him a team-high, five-point performance on the day.

Junior goalie Matthew Smidt, in his second career start at Ohio State, had seven saves in 60 minutes. Shots on goal were 24-18 in favor of the Buckeyes, though the Knights had 10 saves to the Buckeyes’ seven.

Senior specialist Jake Withers split time with freshman Christian Feliziani, going a collective 22-for-28 on faceoff attempts for Ohio State. The Buckeyes also recovered 33 groundballs to Bellarmine’s 19, with Withers leading Ohio State’s effort with nine recoveries.

With the loss, Bellarmine falls to 1-4 on the season and heads home to face Mount St. Mary’s next week. Ohio State, meanwhile, improves to 6-0 on the year. Next up, the Buckeyes head back to Columbus to face Cleveland State.

The safety had to miss the workout portion of the NFL Combine, but he still interviewed with teams.

Ohio State interception-magnet Malik Hooker traveled to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine even though he was not able to participate in the drills due to a torn labrum and hernia. Despite only having one full season of experience, his natural instincts and penchant for snagging turnovers will make him a top pick in the draft.

The safety is already in discussion to be a first round draft pick in large part to a 2016 season that included 74 total tackles (43 solo) and seven interceptions — with three returned for a touchdown. He finished first in the Big Ten and NCAA for Pick-6’s and first in the Big Ten for interception return yards (181).

His athleticism spans more than just football. Hooker could have played division I basketball coming out of high school, but chose the football path instead. His dual training translates onto the field with loose hips and quick feet.

Media Interviews

The main focus of Hooker’s meetings with teams and the media focused around his injury and the recovery. He was asked how the injury affected his the end of the season, to which he admitted having played through it against Clemson.

“The injury happened Nov. 26 in the game against The Team Up North. When that happened, I didn’t really notice it until after the game. After the game, I couldn’t really walk, I was limping. In practice that week, I wasn’t able to run as well and I just kept playing through it. I played the Clemson game with the injury as well.”

Unlike other players around college football, Hooker never considered out of the bowl game to prevent any further injury. Even being a top NFL prospect didn’t affect the safety’s mentality about competing with his teammates.

“Before even looking into my future, there’s just so much that you put into a program like that. So for me to automatically say I’m not playing because I’m a top 10 pick or whatever the scenario may be, I feel like it’s not fair to Ohio State and the guys I worked with because I was there in the offseason working hard with them, I was there in the rough part of the program, so I feel like it was what I had to do.”

Even with some attrition in the defensive backfield, Hooker isn’t worried about the future of the Buckeye secondary. He believes that the Buckeyes don’t rebuild, they reload, and the group of guys ready to step into the starting roles are just as prepared as the guys walking away.

“It’s not like you’re not good enough, just Ohio State, it’s a major division 1 college, the competition here is crazy, so the guys in line next, they’re just waiting for their opportunity and I feel like they’re going to shine when the opportunity is given to them.”

Hooker spoke a lot about how much the coaching staff at Ohio State helped develop him as both a player and a young man. He credits them for supporting him through his initial homesickness when moving to Columbus and pushed him physically further than he knew he was capable.

Workout Results

Having just had surgery less than two months ago, Hooker is foregoing the workout portion of the combine, and will miss Ohio State’s Pro Day as well. He does expect to be back in time for rookie camp, which is about all that will matter to teams.

The linebacker is selling more than just his talent at the NFL Combine.

Raekwon McMillan is ready to continue the rich tradition of successful NFL linebackers out of Ohio State, following in the footsteps of Darron Lee, Ryan Shazier and John James Laurinatis. The Buckeye is just as focused on the work he does off the field, which will be a big draw for teams needing to clean up their reputation.

After enrolling early so he could participate in spring practice with the Buckeyes, the linebacker took snaps in all 15 games his freshman season — sometimes even seeing more playing time than the starter. McMillan finished his Ohio State career with 275 total tackles (136 solo), 10 passes defended, 6.0 sacks, along with two forced fumbles and an interception.

He won the Butkus Award for best linebacker in college and was named a finalist for the award after his sophomore campaign. McMillan also earned second-team All Big Ten honors in 2015 and second team All-American and first-team All Big Ten selection in 2016.

Media Interviews

The Buckeye spoke to the media ahead of his on-field workout, and he was asked how he’s selling himself — and his athleticism — to teams.

“I’m a captain at Ohio State. Everything we did on defense came through me and I can do the same thing for their program. I’ll never give you a reason to let me go from their team and I’ll always be a leader, never a follower.”

He was a very vocal leader for the Silver Bullets at Ohio State, and a big part of that is positioning his teammates ahead of the snap. This quality is critical if in an NFL defense, and McMillan was asked about his comfort level with that aspect of the game.

“Very comfortable. I did it the last three years at Ohio State with a very complex defense but yet simple at the same time with two different coaches on the back end. So I’m very comfortable with it. Coach Schiano brought a more NFL mentality. Coach Ash was a more conservative college football coach.”

He was also asked about the next man up at middle linebacker for the Buckeyes. While he didn’t know which young player would try and fill his shoes as the starter, he did have some high praise for incoming freshman Barron Browning.

“I recruited Barron. Every time he came on a visit he stayed with me. We talked a lot. I pretty much got him to come there... I think he was a little bit better than me coming out. a little faster, a little more agile.”

A pair of eighth inning runs for the Buckeyes proved to be decisive in the Tar Heel state.

The first road series of the season for the Ohio State baseball team is in the books, and thanks to a 7-6 win over Campbell on Sunday afternoon, the Buckeyes claimed the rubber match.

An eighth inning RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Tre’ Gantt followed by an run-scoring single by senior co-captain Jalen Washington proved to be the decisive runs for Ohio State. Gantt was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while sophomore catcher Jacob Barnwell went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the winning effort.

After coming out on top in the final two games against the Camels, the Buckeyes now stand at 5-6 through the first three weeks of play.

Seth Kinker earned the win in relief, despite yielding a run in two innings of work. Yianni Pavlopoulos, back in his closer role after starting the first two weekends, picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Sophomore Ryan Feltner was on the bump to start for the Buckeyes, looking to leave his rocky first two starts behind him. The right-hander tossed five quality innings, but unraveled in the sixth, and took a no-decision. In all, Feltner allowed five runs, four of them earned, on eight hits, walking two and striking out five.

Campbell sent freshman Ryan Kirk to the mound, who had also been knocked around in the season’s early going. The righty had an afternoon to forget, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. Kirk walked three, struck out two, uncorked a wild pitch, and was the recipient of two passed balls. He didn’t factor into the decision on account of his teammates mounting a comeback to tie the game after he had departed.

Ohio State drew first blood, scoring a pair of runs in the second without netting a hit. Zach Ratcliff walked, Tyler Cowles was by a pitch, and Dominic Canzone drew a free pass as well to load the bases. Kirk was then the victim of a passed ball and a wild pitch on back-to-back pitches with Barnwell at the plate, allowing Ratcliff and Cowles to score.

With Canzone now standing on third, Barnwell sent a slow chopper to short, and the Camels’ Adam Wyse couldn’t make the play. It went as an infield single, and pushed the Buckeye advantage to 3-0.

But Ohio State wasn’t finished. Gantt followed with a single to right-center and Washington walked to load the bases once more. Noah McGowan dug in at the plate and watched as a second pitch of the inning glanced off the glove of Campbell catcher Zach Minnick and went to the backstop. Barnwell trotted home with the Buckeyes’ fourth run.

Campbell got one back in the bottom of the frame thanks to a miscue in the field by Ohio State. Jeff Hahs and Matt Barefoot had consecutive one-out singles, putting two on base. Minnick then sent what looked like a tailor-made double play ball to Washington at short, but the Buckeye senior booted it, loading the bases. An RBI groundout by Christian Jones followed, and the score was 4-1.

A second run came an inning later when Feltner walked Wyse and gave up a two-out double to right-center to Jimmy Monaghan, cutting the Camels’ deficit to just two after three innings.

A response run came when Ohio State got its own two-out hitting going in the top of the fourth. Barnwell doubled down the line in left field and Gantt followed by ripping his second single of the game to make it 5-2. Kirk’s day was done at that point, with Campbell head coach Justin Haire going to redshirt junior Harry Thomas out of the bullpen.

Feltner ran into trouble in the home half of the sixth, though, yielding singles to Cole Hallum and Monaghan and walking Hahs to load the bases with nobody out. The Hudson, Ohio native fought back, getting Barefoot to pop out to short right and striking out Minnick looking with a fastball painted on the outside corner of the plate at the knees.

An escape was within reach, but with a full count, Jones smacked a double into the right field corner that cleared the bases and knotted the game up at five. Trenton Davis struck out to end the inning, but the damage was done and the Buckeyes found themselves in a whole new ballgame.

Thomas cruised for a couple of innings, but nearly gave the lead right back to Ohio State. McGowan led off the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a fly ball to right by Ratcliff. The go-ahead run 90 feet from home, the Camels intentionally walked Bo Coolen to put runners on the corners with one out. That strategy paid dividends, as Brady Cherry grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

In the eighth, a Cowles single, a throwing error by Thomas on a bunt by Canzone, and a bunt single by Barnwell loaded the bases with nobody out and set the table for Gantt and Washington to bring the winning runs plateward.

Kinker yielded a solo homer to Barefoot with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but worked around a two-on, two-out situation to send the game to the final frame with the Buckeyes up 7-6. Pavlopoulos faced the heart of Campbell’s order in the ninth, and set them down in order on just 11 pitches.

Next up for Ohio State is a another trip down south for a three-game weekend series against Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers next Friday through Sunday. The Buckeyes will take part in the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida the following Tuesday and Wednesday before finally returning to Columbus for the home opener at Bill Davis Stadium in two weekends.

MotS&G B1G Championship Round Thoughts for Ohio St. Wrestlers

B1G Championship Round Thoughts for Ohio St. Wrestlers
Garth
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Ohio State heads into this afternoon’s B1G Wrestling Championship Finals with a once commanding lead.

You can find a complete breakdown of the math here.

SCORING UPDATE: HEADING INTO FINALS BUCKEYES LEAD BY 7. Two titles and a Pletcher 3rd means Penn State would need to be almost perfect or score a lot of pins to make a run. A Bo Jordan win is a near OSU clincher.

As for Iowa, I believe the Pletcher win has virtually eliminated them. Any one Ohio State title surely would.

So watch out for Nathan Tomasello at 133 and Bo Jordan at 174. If those two win, the first sole B1G Championship in living memory will return to Ohio State (Ohio State and Iowa tied for the 2015 title).

So let me offer this thought: Kyle Snyder is so insanely talented he is hardly a collegiate story at times, which is painful to say. The conclusion in the previous paragraph just assumes Snyder will win the 285 title. In this, the best conference wrestling championship in the land, Snyder has hardly needed to break a sweat. But get this: he wrestles at his Olympic Gold medal weight of 213.4 pounds in freestyle. So he dominates while being dramatically undersized at 285.

After a bye in the first round Snyder won by a 26-9 tech fall in the quarters against Razohnn Gross of Rutgers. In the semis, he won by a mere 14-7. While that might sound pedestrian, the only way fourth seeded Michael Kroells (Minnesota) scored was by Snyder letting him up after taking him down seven times.

Snyder faces a very worthy Connor Medbery of Wisconsin in the finals. Second seeded Medbery has earned the right not to be taken for granted. But still. I feel like I am going out of my way to put some drama in this. Poor Kyle. All he does is blow away everyone he faces. The spectacular has become common place. An historic champion is taken for granted because there is no apparent drama. At this point, all you can do is sit back and watch a future legend go to work.

That’s not nothing.

OK, so what about the matches?

Nathan Tomasello has not faced third seeded Cory Clark of Iowa since his move up to 133. An anticipated dual meet-up did not happen when Clark was held out of the lineup. Tomasello has seemingly struggled, eking out a two point and a one point win. But on the other hand, especially against talented Stevan Micic of Michigan, when Tomasello needed to bring the juice he did.

Even if struggling, look for Nathan to capture his third B1G title.

At 149, Micah Jordan finds there is no rest for the wicked. After his spirited upset of Iowa’s Brandon Sorenson, he jumps into the flames to face the uber fierce Zain Retherford of Penn State. As a freshman, Retherford was the only wreslter to beat Logan Stieber in his last two years. Last year, after taking off 2015, Retherford jumped up in weight to win the NCAA title at 149.

A driven and punishing wrestler, Retherford has not been seriously touched in two years. Jordan did hang tough with him awhile in their dual. But Retherford eventually got enough back points to pull away for a major win. If Jordan can stay off his back, perhaps he has a chance, but this is one prohibitively in the Penn State column. Ohio wrestling fans will revel in an historic upset if Micah can reverse the script.

At 174, one seed Bo Jordan faces Mark Hall, an unbelievably talented Penn State freshman. The two have not met previously. As noted, a Jordan win would seemingly put the match out of Penn State’s reach.

At 184, Myles Martin, riding the high of another wild win against Bo Nickal, faces off with Sammie Brooks of Iowa. This one goes either way. Brooks pulled away from Myles late in their dual. But as with last year, Myles is charging when it counts.

At 197, Kollin Moore goes against Brett Pfarr of Minnesota. Pfarr won a close one a few weeks ago, but again, this one could go either way.

Finally, Luke Pletcher prevailed in his consolation match, thus setting up a third place bout against Colton McCrystal of Nebraska. This match up of 4 (McCrystal) and 5 seeds is a redo from yesterday which Pletcher won in a close one.

So there are several matches that can go either way. If OSU just holds its own, the title should be finally their’s–all to themselves.

But Coach Ryan has been there before. In 2009, he stood under the stands in St. Louis with a firm grasp on an NCAA title. He watched Iowa creep up and eventually claim a miraculous win. So he is not counting on anything.

Allowing himself to feel a little better after Pletcher’s consolation semi win an hour ago, that sinking feeling set in again. Penn State’s Vincenzo Joseph turned in a late consolation semi pin at 165 to bring Penn State back by 5-1/2 points. That was followed by a Nickal win, a McCutcheon win and a Nevills pin at heavy. A 23 point lead had dwindled to four.

Fortunately a thunderous pin by Jose Rodriguez in the seventh place match started to level out the bonus points. Now with seven Ohio State wrestlers going for a potential 25 placement points in the final matches (to 16 for Penn State), the feeling is, just “win our share.” If the Buckeyes can just break even on the close ones, that seven point cushion should be a mountain for Penn State to climb. We will know soon.
