LGHL Ohio State reportedly signs non-binding agreement to play in the NIT

Ohio State reportedly signs non-binding agreement to play in the NIT

Will the Buckeyes play in the postseason? It could be trending that way.

Will Ohio State accept an NIT bid? We’re one step closer to knowing now.

Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch reports that Ohio State returned the paperwork needed for the Buckeyes to play in the NIT. From Jardy’s report:

Ohio State has returned a signed copy of the NIT postseason agreement for 2017, the NCAA confirmed to The Dispatch.

The agreement is sent to nearly all Division I men's basketball teams starting in late January. Teams that return a signed agreement can change their minds about playing in the NIT, but an NCAA spokesman said such decisions are rare.

Of course, “rare” doesn’t mean “never happens.” After all, as Jardy also pointed out, LSU decided to decline an NIT bid during the Ben Simmons season, even though they finished with a 19-14 record.

Last night, right after the Buckeyes lost to Rutgers, it wasn’t clear if the Buckeyes would accept a bid, if offered. Thad Matta told us that he didn’t know if the Buckeyes would take a bid, and the idea didn’t exactly excite many of the players we talked to.

But people can change their mind after having a night to sleep on it. We’ll see what Ohio State eventually decides to do. If they want another game (or more), at least their paperwork is in order.

LGHL Ted Ginn Jr. to sign with the New Orleans Saints, per report

The wide receiver is headed to an NFC South rival, but is joining several other Buckeyes.

Heading into the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, the Carolina Panthers decided not to re-sign wideout and special teams phenom Ted Ginn Jr. Instead, the Buckeye has agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints, according to Dianna Russini of ESPN.

Ginn will be joining several other Buckeyes in the Big Easy, and will a welcome addition to a wide receiver group that includes big guy Michael Thomas. The Saints wanted to add some new targets for quarterback Drew Brees, and the first man up was from an NFC South rival.

Initially pegged as a return specialist early in his career, the wideout has proven that he can have success on the offensive side of the ball thanks to his last few seasons with the Panthers. His first stint in Carolina was only for a year, before making a quick stop with the Arizona Cardinals on his way back to Carolina in 2015. Ginn signed a 2-year deal worth $4.2 million, including a $1.7 million signing bonus.

His new contract with the Panthers was justified in year one. During the team’s Super Bowl run, Ginn was having a career-high season, amassing 739 yards on 44 receptions for 36 first downs and 10 touchdowns. He followed that up with a 2016 season that included 752 yards on 52 receptions for 27 first downs and four touchdowns — Ginn also became one of the first players to claim an 85-plus yard touchdown reception, 85-plus yard punt return for a touchdown and 85-plus yard kick return for a touchdown.

For most of his career, Ginn has lived around the 50% mark for receptions on targets, but when he does make the grab he averages over 11-yards per catch. The Buckeye’s real draw is his speed. He never really fit the mold to be a team’s No. 1 receiver, but is perfect as a deep threat.

The early years of his career focused on the return game, with Ginn fielding both kicks and punts. Over the course of his 10 years in the NFL, Ginn has recorded a sensational 2,497 yards and four touchdowns on 238 punt returns, along with 6,842 yards and three touchdowns on 300 kick returns. He also scored on two different kick returns that were over 100 yards.

The Miami Dolphins’ first round draft pick (No. 9 overall) in 2007 out of Ohio State found a way to be productive on both offense and special teams throughout his career, and has definitely left a legacy of which he — and Buckeye Nation -- can be proud.

Ohio roots have Georgia linebacker interested in the Buckeyes

...when a player like Michael Harris (Tucker, Ga.) is eager to hear from you, it’s worth doing a little investigation. That’s what is happening now between the country’s 13th-ranked inside linebacker and Ohio State.

“I was raised in Ohio,” Harris told Land of 10. “I lived there my first couple years. I’ve been back a few summers and still have family up there. I was up there last summer.”

Harris has offers from Alabama, Auburn and Georgia among his top 15, but it’s rare to find a prospect from the South who views Ohio State the way he does. He has been talking to the Buckeyes and didn’t hold back when discussing what a potential offer would mean to him.

“I’m hearing from the boss man, coach Urban Meyer,” Harris said. “(Quarterbacks coach Ryan) Day, Mark Pantoni and (new linebackers coach Billy) Davis. We’ve talked about (a potential offer), but they want to know me better. One thing I don’t have is someone to drive me eight hours up there.

“I’ve always loved that school and always said I was going to go there. If my dreams come true, it just shows me that anything can happen if I put my mind to it. All the work that I’ve put in is for that offer to come. It would mean a lot to me.”

The Buckeyes are on the radar of an NFL standout’s son.

Samuel down to six

Ever since Urban Meyer’s arrival in Columbus, Ohio to become Ohio State’s head football coach, the Buckeyes have had plenty of success on the recruiting trail down in Florida. The most notable would be at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, where they have reeled in talents like Damon Arnette, Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa and Trevon Grimes in previous years.

On Wednesday, they got one step closer to being able to add another name to that group when 2018 cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. narrowed his 38 offers down to his Top five schools on Twitter. As expected, Ohio State did find their way on the list for the 5-foot-9, 166-pounder and their competition will be very tough in this recruitment. The top list also included Alabama, Florida State, LSU and Miami (FL).

— Asante Samuel Ⓜ️ (@godschild3_) March 9, 2017

For now, the Buckeyes will have some catching up to do. Well, so will the Crimson Tide, Tigers and Hurricanes. It was just late last month that Samuel spoke with 247Sports’ Chris Nee and told him that the Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles have a “big lead” for his services. As of Wednesday night, the Garnet and Gold hold 85 percent of Samuel’s 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions.

However, the good news is that Samuel is currently uncommitted and Ohio State has time to potentially throw a wrench into things — and attempt to make this battle much closer. First order of business is to get the four-star prospect in Columbus and on campus. If that doesn’t happen before summer, it may be too late for the Buckeyes.

With that being said, anything can happen in recruiting. Samuel is ranked as the No. 108 overall player in the 2018 recruiting class. Among cornerbacks, Samuel finds himself as the 14th highest graded one and is pegged as the 27th best player in the talented state of Florida.

Kinnard waits for Bucks

Back on National Signing Day for the 2017 class, Urban Meyer and Mark Pantoni touched on how the Buckeyes need to make Ohio more of a priority going forward. So far, the Buckeyes are doing that. They have a commitment from 2018 all purpose back Jaelen Gill of Westerville South (OH) and have offered eight others inside the state.

However, one they have not offered is ‘18 offensive tackle Darian Kinnard of St. Ignatius (OH). The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder does have offers from Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Purdue and UCLA. But it certainly, and definitely not shockingly, seems that the three-star prospect is waiting on that offer from the Scarlet and Gray to come.

“I don’t have an offer from Ohio State but they always stay in contact. I’d say the ones that stick out the most are Kentucky, Maryland and Ohio State,” Kinnard relayed to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong. It was also revealed by Wiltfong that the only campus Kinnard has been to yet is the Buckeyes’.

Obviously, it is a wait-and-see approach here in regards to whether or not Kinnard will get an offer from Ohio State. The good news for the Buckeyes is that the three-star prospect hasn’t gotten offers that force them to play their hand. However, UCLA is probably the top offer he has gotten and that just came about on Tuesday. We will see if that starts some crazy recruiting momentum for Kinnard and enables offers to start pouring in.
