“Alex Grinch on Tuesday formally began working as the newest member of the Ohio State football coaching staff, and he did so with the preliminary agreement that he will make $800,000 the first year of a two-year deal, plus the requisite perks and possible bonuses.”

When word first began circulating that Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch might be joining Ohio State’s coaching staff, everything seemed to make sense. Grinch is a Central Ohio native, and played college football at Division III powerhouse Mount Union in his home state.

So, when the calendar turned to Jan. 9, 2018, and FBS programs were able to hire a 10th assistant for the first time, it was the perfect fit for Grinch to come home, and he did. The one thing that confused on-lookers was just how much money would Grinch be making in his new position.

Grinch reportedly made $600,000 in Pullman last year, so if he was going to leave a DI defensive coordinator position for a “to be announced” coaching spot, even if it was to come home, chances are that it would have to be worth his while, and apparently it is.

His reported $800,000 base salary is more than defensive coordinator Greg Schiano’s $700,000 and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson’s $650,000. With a salary like that, it seems fairly likely that Grinch will be given the “co-defensive coordinator” designation, and should Schiano get another head coaching opportunity elsewhere, Grinch should be in line to take over as the sole DC.

With Ryan Day as the co-coordinator on the offensive side of the ball, and Grinch assumably the same for defense, OSU has a pretty good set of young coaches who could move up if opportunities arise; perhaps one of them will even eventually succeed Urban Meyer as head coach.

When Sam Hubbard participated in November’s Senior Tackle festivities, it seemed pretty obvious to most that he would eventually forego his final year of collegiate eligibility and enter the NFL draft, which he did the day after the Cotton Bowl.

However, his draft stock likely jumped up significantly following his Cotton Bowl performance. With 2.5 sacks and another tackle for loss, Hubbard shot up to the first round in the New Years’ Day mock draft from SB Nation’s Dan Kader, coming in at No. 31 and going to the Patriots. We do know how Bill Belichick loves former Buckeyes.

However, as great as Hubbard’s performance was in Texas, he wasn’t the only Buckeye to make ESPN’s All-Bowl team as safety Damon Webb also earned a spot. Webb benefitted from Denzel Ward deciding not to play in the bowl game, and went on to have a stellar outing himself.

With a fumble recovery and an interception in the game, coupled with the best passer-rating-against of all draft-eligible safeties, Webb is being projected to go as high as Round 2, and as low as Round 5. If he is able to have a good combine and/or pro-day, he should be able to be another early-round DB pick out of Columbus.

In this amalgamation of “too-early” polls, the Buckeyes are coming in at a respectable No. 4, behind Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia. While there are still a ton of questions left unanswered—who will be the starting (and backup) quarterback, will any other players leave for the draft, etc.— No. 4 feels right.

Unless something changes, Ohio State will come into the 2018 season with one of, if not the, best duo of running backs in the country in J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber, a still ferocious defensive line, and a stable of young wide receivers who just so happened to look much better with Dwayne Haskins throwing the ball than J.T. Barrett in 2017.

With games against the Oregon State Beavers and TCU Horned Frogs in the first three weeks of the year, if the Buckeyes want to have a chance to get back into the College Football Playoff next year, they will need to answer these and many other questions right off the bat.

On this episode of the Hangout in the Holy Land, Matt Tamanini and Grant Freking dive into Ohio State basketball’s historic upset of the No. 1 Michigan State Spartans from Sunday. They discuss what first-year head coach Chris Holtmann is doing to get the most out of a team that no one (hosts included) expected much out of, and they talk about the impacts of a healthy Keita Bates-Diop and graduate transfer Andrew Dakich.


The pair also talk about why this year’s team is so much more enjoyable to watch than years past, and they look at the remainder of the Buckeyes’ schedule and predict how many wins the team will have as they enter the postseason.

Matt and Grant agree that with the Big Ten being a bit down this year, and OSU’s favorable schedule here on out, that while it might be optimistic to predict an NCAA berth—or even a B1G Tournament run— the evidence thus far this season indicates that both are completely possible.

Javontae Jean-Baptiste is is a top-25 OLB in the 2018 class.

The college football season has officially gone into hibernation. Alabama walked away with the national title; Ohio State walked away with a Cotton Bowl win and a No. 5 AP Poll ranking to end the 2017-18 season.

Just because the action on the field has taken a break doesn’t mean the recruiting world is doing the same. Visits and offers were doled out by the Buckeyes, as the Scarlet and Gray are back on the path of claiming the No. 1 recruiting class for 2018.

Can’t go wrong with linebackers


Back on Monday, linebacker Jerome Baker announced that he was forgoing a senior season at OSU, and was entering the NFL Draft. Baker was one of the premier LBs on the squad—and his absence leaves a spot for an up-and-comer.

While there are a few great selections in the fold already, it doesn’t hurt to start putting the building blocks together for what the future holds. On Tuesday, four-star LB Javontae Jean-Baptiste (Oradell, NJ/Bergen Catholic) announced on Twitter that he received an offer from Ohio State.


Jean-Baptiste is considered by the 247sports composite as the 313th best prospect in the 2018 class, the 21st best outside linebacker, and seventh best recruit in the state of New Jersey. Currently, his 247sports profile page has 24 offers listed, with some name brand schools such as Nebraska and Virginia Tech in the mix.

According to 247sports, Jean-Baptiste is scheduled to make an official visit with Ohio State on Jan. 19. A week prior (Jan. 12), the Garden State prospect is scheduled for an official visit with Nebraska. On Tuesday, however, Jean-Baptiste took an official visit to Texas A&M, a program who went out and got national championship winner Jimbo Fisher to be their head coach.

While the Bucks’ offer carries weight—considering the recruit comes within the Big Ten footprint—there is stiff competition. Virginia Tech currently is predicted as a favorite to land the LB, with 55 percent of the 247sports Crystal Ball leaning toward the Hokies getting the prospect.

Can the Hokies fend off the reigning Cotton Bowl champs for Jean-Baptiste? Or can Scott Frost bring the New Jersey native to Lincoln, NE to help jumpstart the new regime on the linebacker front? It’ll all look a lot clearer in the next couple weeks.

301 to the 614?


When Jim Tressel was head coach, he recruited down in Southern Maryland. Fun fact: current assistant head coach/defensive line guru Larry Johnson had a successful stint as high school football head coach in Maryland.

Fast forward to now, and the Urban Meyer era has gone back to the Maryland well for another star of tomorrow. Four-star offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, who was selected to the U.S. Army All-American bowl, has a visit date scheduled with Ohio State for Jan. 20. He made the announcement on Twitter.


Walker comes from North Point High School in Waldorf, MD, and holds 27 offers, according to 247sports. Naturally, the typical geographic rivals are fighting for Walker, too. Penn State is currently seen as a favorite, commanding 94 percent of the crystal ball predictions at 247sports. Just like Jean-Baptiste, the Hokies have made an offer to Walker, and actually had an official visit with him back on Dec. 15.

Back in 2011, North Point HS alum Conner Crowell signed with Ohio State. Will Walker do the same? We’ll find out where he’s headed on Feb. 7.

The 2017 college football season officially ended last night, which means it's officially time to look forward to next year. It's early, but things are looking good for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State basketball has been far from the minds of top collegiate teams and fans alike over the last few years, and for good reason: The Buckeyes simply weren’t getting the job done anymore. Now, with the help from a blowout win over No. 1 Michigan State, it might signal that Ohio State is back. First-year head coach Chris Holtmann helped guide the Buckeyes to a much better record thus far than in Thad Matta’s past few seasons and with a healthy squad featuring Kieta Bates-Diop, things are looking up. If you ask any of the players on Ohio State’s roster, they knew this was possible and are excited at the chance of potentially making the NCAA Tournament once again.

Of course, there’s still roughly two months to go before all of that’s decided, but a strong start from the Buckeyes has certainly helped their chances. Having to only play the Spartans once is helpful, but Ohio State will still have to do some work in the Big Ten. Should they also make a decent run in the Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes would have a great chance to make the Big Dance. But, the signature win of the season couldn’t have been better than over Tom Izzo’s squad.

Even the biggest Ohio State fans still like to keep an eye on Alabama, as much as it can pain them to watch the success that the Crimson Tide have. With that said, eyes were certain to be glued as Nick Saban led his team to another national championship Monday night against Georgia. Perhaps the biggest moment in the game came at halftime, when Saban made the risky decision to bench his starting quarterback Jalen Hurts in favor of a true freshman, Tua Tagovailoa. Hurts, after all, had come a Clemson drive away from winning the national championship last season, and has been 25-2 as a starter for the Crimson Tide over the past two seasons.

But Saban went with what he thought was right, and the ability to throw downfield consistently helped change the game in the second half as the Tide erased a 13-point deficit and ended up winning in overtime on a deep TD throw from Tagovailoa.

The question for Buckeye fans, is if Urban Meyer had been in that position against Georgia, would he have made the call to replace J.T. Barrett (another running quarterback with an impeccable starting record) for Dwayne Haskins? I think most Ohio State fans would say no, he wouldn’t. But it’s an interesting thought nonetheless.

With another classic national championship game in the books, Chris Low of ESPN broke down his top 10 national championship games in college football history. Ohio State’s win over the Miami Hurricanes in the 2002-03 national championship game came in ranked third on his list. The double overtime game where the Buckeyes were 11.5-point underdogs was an instant classic and will always be remembered in Ohio State history. The Hurricanes were riding a 34-game win streak and were winners of the previous national title.

Craig Krenzel, Maurice Clarett, and the Ohio State defense pounded back and forth with Miami until the fireworks started going for the Buckeyes. One of the biggest moments of the game was a pass interference call at the end of the first overtime that helped Ohio State stay alive in the contest until Clarett had the go-ahead touchdown.
