It wasn’t pretty, but the basketball Buckeyes found a way to pick up their 20th win of the season.

It didn’t look good in the early going for the No. 17 Ohio State Buckeyes (20-5, 11-1) but in the end, they got the win against the Illinois Fighting Illini (15-12, 2-9), 75-67.

The Buckeyes trailed by as many as 15 points, but behind a scoring run sparked by Keita Bates-Diop in the first half, the Chris Holtmann coached squad picked up their 11th win in conference play, and 20th win on the campaign.

Bates-Diop had an electric first half, scoring 17 points. By the time the clock hit all zeros, KBD ended the game with a new career-high in scoring. He ended the game with 35 points and 13 rebounds. After today’s performance, the forward now has tallied 10 double-doubles on the season—and 16 for his career. Additionally, the Normal, Ill. native passed Carter Scott and Scoonie Penn on OSU’s all-time scoring list.

Even though Bates-Diop led the charge, Jae’Sean Tate followed second in scoring for OSU on the afternoon, scoring 11 points against the Illini.

Not to be lost in the shuffle, there was another double-double effort by a Buckeye. Freshman Kaleb Wesson put up 10 points and 10 boards to claim his first double-double.

Turnovers were a constant theme in the game. Illinois committed 11 of them, while Ohio State committed 15 dastardly TOs. Even though the visiting side led the points off turnover margin (16-10), the Buckeyes made up for it by out scoring the Illini 38-16 on paint points.

Here’s how this one went down:

In his first career start, Andre Wesson— due to Kam Williamsindefinite suspension— got off on the right track by slamming home a dunk to give the Buckeyes the opening basket. A good start for the Scarlet and Gray was met by the Illini answering back with a run; a 6-0 run behind two three-pointers from Michael Finke and Mark Alstork was how the Illini charged out to an early 8-4 lead with 17:52 left in the half.

Bates-Diop broke up the run with a jumper, followed up by Tate nailing a three of his own. On Illinois’ next possession, Leron Black made a rebuttal three, bringing the score to an 11-9 advantage to the visitors at the first media timeout.

Illinois was aggressive on the floor early, but quickly had two fouls to show for it; Ohio State on the other hand, went the first six minutes without committing an infraction. Staying out of foul trouble was mashed with a 2-minute scoring drought (as well as three turnovers in the same stretch).

Adding to the game was, well, the ability for the game to not happen. The shot clock malfunctioned, and caused a brief stoppage of play on the floor. A little break helped the Illini’s offensive efforts, as they bagged a couple of makes from Mark Alstork. Chris Holtmann burned a timeout to reset his team, as Ohio State trailed 21-13 with 12:30 remaining. Going into the timeout, Illinois had made four of their last five shots, and pushed out to their largest lead (8) of the game at this point.

Coming out of the timeout, Illinois continued to put points on the board. Five more unanswered points by the team from Champaign, Ill., cemented an 11-0 run. Alstork sparked the run, and crossed into double-digit scoring before being called to the bench with 10:51. With 9:21 left in the half, the Illini commanded a double-digit lead, 31-17.

Three-point shots weren’t falling for OSU in the first half. Bates-Diop clanked on a three, and after getting the offensive rebound, Andrew Dakich clanked a three-pointer, too. Ohio State was 1-for-7 from beyond the arc in the early going; Illinois was 4-of-7.

By the time the under-8 minute media timeout arrived with 7:04 left before halftime, both teams were struggling to get consistent scoring. The Illini were in the midst of a 3-minute scoring drought—which also included three turnovers in the same stretch of time. The Buckeyes couldn’t take advantage of the struggle, as they went over a minute and a half since their last basket, a Bates-Diop dunk at the 8:45 mark.

Play resumed with Illinois up 30-19, but things were about to shake up inside Value City Arena. Ohio State went on an 11-0 run, with Bates-Diop scoring all the points. Two free throws, a tip-in, a three-pointer and another dunk punctuated a nine-point KBD scoring drive after the media timeout. At this point, KBD was the leading scorer on the floor with 17 points.

With 5:19 left, Tate put up a layup, squaring the game at 30. That would be the score as the under-4 minute media timeout arrived with 3:30 remaining in the half. The Buckeyes had pulled back into the game, thanks to KBD scoring at will and the Illini going on a 6-plus minute scoring drought.

Back in action, Kaleb Wesson missed a jumper, but got the rebound and connected on a layup. It took a while, but the Buckeyes had the lead again, 32-30, with 3:12 in the half. Both teams would be without points for the next few possessions, but Wesson broke up the monotony with a couple of free throws at the :59 second mark.

At halftime, the score would be 34-30 in favor of the Buckeyes. Yes, Illinois had the same points they did at around the halfway point of the half. The Illini went the final 10:11 without a point, turned the ball over eight times on the same stretch, and missed nine straight shots, yet still only trailed by four points. Ohio State engineered the comeback behind a 21-2 run to close out the first half.

A made free throw by Bates-Diop, and a three-pointer by the Illini would start off the second half. Shortly after, a foul by Andre Wesson sent Kipper Nichols to the line, where he make both freebies. Right after that, KBD went back to his scoring ways, knocking down a two-pointer to pull the Buckeyes up 37-35, then followed that up with another slamma-jamma dunk. With that, the under-16 minute timeout arrived with the Buckeyes holding the lead, 39-35, with 15:40 left in regulation.

Unlike the first half, the Illini didn’t go for long stretches without points. Nichols dropped another three-pointer into the basket and Black connected on a layup to counteract five KBD free throws that were made over the course of a couple of minutes. OSU still had the lead though, 45-42, with less than eight minutes off of the clock.

As Ohio State pulled up to a six-point lead, 50-44, with 10:22 left, the Illini got a boost via two critical three-pointers from Trent Frazier and Aaron Jordan. Shortly later, Alstork stole an inbound pass, hit a layup and got fouled. After completing the three-point play the old fashion way, the Illini recaptured the lead, 53-52. Another poked ball led to Mark Smith collecting the leather and driving it to the basket where he was fouled by KBD. He made both free throws, and pulled the visitors up 55-52 heading into an OSU timeout.

After getting back from the break, Holtmann gave the referees an earful, as Tate was called for a technical foul due to some extracurricular activities prior to the media timeout. The frustrations were compounded by the fact that Illinois was on a 9-0 run, while Ohio State committed four turnovers and scored zero points over a 2:17 period of time. Another timeout—this time the under-8 media one—arrived with the Illini up 56-52.

Tate was fouled and sent to the line, making both his free throws. On the other end, Frazier quickly answered with a two of his own—negating the free throws. Rinse and repeat on the next series of points: Kaleb Wesson making two freebies, followed by Frazier making another two-point shot.

C.J. Jackson, who had a quiet afternoon, came up big with a pair of made free throws after getting fouled by Alstork. Like the Frazier rebuttals, Alstork answered back with a jumper. Jackson, who missed his prior seven shots, made his first basket of the day to pull the Buckeyes within two, 62-60.

Alstork would make it a three-point led after splitting a pair of free throws. However, that lead quickly evaporated after KBD nailed a downtown shot to tie the game at 63-63 with 5:04 remaining.

The final media timeout at 3:50 remaining concluded with the score still tied at 63.

After getting subbed in after the timeout, Kaleb Wesson made an immediate impact: a made layup. The Buckeyes took the lead back with 3:39 left. The drama would only intensify as the Illini lost possession of the ball, leading to Alstork running into Jackson. Jackson went to the line for free shots, splitting them.

The three-point shot abandoned the Illini on the next possession, as Frazier couldn’t get the swish; on the other end, Dakich delivered a layup with KBD getting the assist. Another Frazier miss—this time a layup—led to Jackson putting in a layup. Ohio State led 70-63 with 1:41 remaining.

Jordan made a much needed Illini three to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to four. However, it was too little too late, as the Scarlet and Gray survived the scare—and now head into a showdown in West Lafayette, Ind.

Next up for the Ohio State Buckeyes are the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers. That game is set for Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on BTN.

An Early Look at the Class of 2019

At this point, Ohio State has almost 150 offers on the table, only a relatively small portion of which are OFFERS. Most of the threads in our data base consist of the obligatory "BLESSED / HONORED" tweet and nothing more, and there will be nothing more because there is no mutual interest between Ohio State and the alleged offeree. What I have done is weed out all those kids who have little or no interest in Ohio State (and vice versa) and focus on the handful of prospects who might really become Buckeyes this December, along with a few five star pipe dream types whom everyone in the country is chasing.

QUARTERBACKS

Grant Tisdale (Allen TX; 6'1" 190 lbs; #7 dual threat; #281 overall)

Tisdale is the current front runner to be the Buckeyes' quarterback signee for the recruiting class of 2019. However, Tisdale is a dual threat quarterback (think J.T. Barrett) and Ohio State seems to be transitioning to a more traditional passing attack with Dwayne Haskins under center and Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day at the controls. At the present time, Tisdale is 100% crystal balled to Ohio State (3 predictions) but he might not be a good fit in Ohio State's new look offense.

RUNNING BACKS

Sampson James (Avon IN; 6'1" 205 lbs; #8 running back; #126 overall)

Sampson James just had a very good week. First, Urban Meyer made a visit to see Sampson (January 25th), which is a very good sign that Ohio State is very interested. Then Sampson received a huge bump in the 247 composite rankings, from the #18 running back to #8, and from the #229 overall prospect to #126. Although Ohio State will continue to pursue some other highly-rated running backs such as Noah Cain and Devyn Ford (see below), there is a very good chance that Sampson James will be a member of the Buckeyes' class of 2019. There are currently three crystal ball predictions for Sampson, and all are to Ohio State.

Noah Cain (Bradenton FL IMG Academy; 5'11" 200 lbs; #3 running back; #26 overall)

Blue chip running back Noah Cain is high on Ohio State's wish list, and Ohio State is high on Noah Cain's. With that being said, it's always difficult to land a five-star recruit, especially one from down south. Currently, Ohio State is the crystal ball leader with a thin 38% to 31% edge over Texas, and with Miami, Oklahoma, and Louisiana State also garnering some early predictions. When five teams each have some action, it really means that all the crystal balls are cloudy. Don't expect an early decision here.

Devyn Ford (Stafford VA; 5'11" 185 lbs; #7 running back; #78 overall)

Devyn Ford is the third running back whom the Buckeyes are chasing early. At 185 pounds (and quite possibly less), Ford might be best suited for the Curtis Samuel role in Ohio State's offense. At the present time, the Buckeyes have no crystal balls in their favor, but Ohio State is listed as a "warmer" school in 247 Sport's data base along with Penn State (no crystal balls) and Virginia Tech (86% of crystal balls), with Clemson (14% of crystal balls), Oklahoma, and North Carolina also being in the mix.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Theo Wease, Jr. (Allen TX; 6'2" 180 lbs; #3 wide receiver; #29 overall)

Theo Wease, Jr. is one of those five-star talents that the Buckeye staff will pursue right to the bitter end. Although Ohio State had some early momentum (27% of crystal balls), all of the recent action has been on Texas A+M (55% of crystal balls), with Oklahoma also getting some consideration (18% of crystal balls). The success (or lack thereof) of Ohio State's new look passing attack should be a major factor here, as will the (presumed) official visit.

Garrett Wilson (Austin TX Lake Travis; 6'0" 178 lbs; #18 wide receiver; #91 overall)

Garrett Wilson is a high school teammate of 2018 Ohio State quarterback signee Matthew Baldwin, and he is also a native of Dublin, Ohio. Those two factors give Ohio State an early edge in what will likely be a difficult recruiting battle with the Texas Longhorns. The two schools have evenly split the ten current crystal balls, but Ohio State owns all of the most recent action. Wilson also has serious skills at cornerback.

David Bell (Indianapolis IN Warren Central; 6'2" 185 lbs; #12 wide receiver; #71 overall)

The Hoosier State rarely produces top-100 talent and most of those top prospects end up leaving the state. That's good news for the Buckeyes, who are pursuing the top two prospects in Indiana in wide receiver David Bell and running back Sampson James (see above). Ohio State currently holds seven of the eight crystal balls, with Steve Wiltfong casting his lot with Michigan. A few other Big Ten schools (Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State) might also end up being players, but things look good for the scarlet and grey so far.

Milton Wright (Louisville KY Christian Academy; 6'3" 190 lbs; #14 athlete; #134 overall)

Since the dynamic duo of Devin Smith and Michael Thomas led Ohio State to a national championship in 2014, the Buckeye coaching staff has been perpetually searching for the "next big thing" at wide receiver. Add Milton Wright to that ever-expanding list. Although listed as an "athlete" on 247 Sports, Wright will likely play wide receiver in college, and with a big frame and blazing speed he will likely succeed in that role. 247 Sports recruiting guru Steve Wiltfong just placed his crystal ball prediction on Ohio State, so you can probably put Milton Wright on commitment watch.

Jameson Williams (St. Louis MO Cardinal Ritter; 6'2" 160 lbs; #41 WR; #241 overall)

For the class of 2018, Ohio State signed two wide receivers from St. Louis (Kamryn Babb and Cameron Brown), so why not head back to the Gateway City for another one for the class of 2019? Four recent crystal balls have been cast for Jameson, and all four have him ending up at Ohio State. If things don't work out with the Buckeyes, then Sparty looks like a major player in this recruitment.

Trey Knox (Mufreesoboro TN Blackman; 6'4" 190 lbs; #33 wide receiver; #179 overall)

Knox is a high school teammate of 2018 Ohio State running back signee Master Teague and the Buckeyes are Trey's dream team, and these two factors make Ohio State the early crystal ball frontrunner (83%). However, there are a lot of very talented wide receivers on Ohio State's early board so it remains to be seen how seriously the staff will pursue Knox. Home state school
Tennessee is also in the mix (17% crystal balls) along with Clemson ("warmer" status) and Notre Dame (recent Junior Day visit).

Lance Wilhoite (Nashville TN Franklin Road Academy; 6'2" 165 lbs; #21 wide receiver; #117 overall)

During the Great Tennessee Tire Fire of 2017, Ohio State swooped into Rocky Top territory and signed offensive tackle Max Wray and running back Master Teague for the Class of 2018 and made serious progress with several 2019 recruits including Lance Wilhoite. Although Lance is 100% crystal balled to Tennessee (four predictions so far), Ohio State is the only school listed as "warmer" on his 247 Sports profile. If the Volunteers can regain some stability in 2018, then Wilhoite will probably end up in Knoxville. If the tires continue to smolder, then Columbus will be a very strong possibility.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN

Doug Nester (Huntington WV Spring Valley; 6'6" 290 lbs; #8 offensive tackle; #52 overall)

Doug Nester was the Buckeyes' first verbal commitment for the class of 2019 and he fills one of the team's few positions of need. Nester is just the second top-100 recruit (247 Composite) to hail from the State of West Virginia since wide receiver Brandon Barrett in the class of 2004.

Darnell Wright (Huntington WV Huntington; 6'6" 275 lbs; #3 offensive tackle; #19 overall)

The only other top-100 recruit (247 Composite) from West Virginia since 2004 is Doug Nester's fellow Huntington offensive tackle, Darnell Wright. In addition, Wright is the only five-star recruit from the Mountaineer State in the history of the 247 Composite that goes back to the year 2000. All five current crystal balls have Wright signing with Ohio State, although Alabama will probably be a player as well.

Devontae Dobbs (Belleville MI; 6'4" 270 lbs; #1 offensive tackle; #9 overall)

Devontae Dobbs is the top offensive tackle in the country, and at this early stage all of the crystal ball action is on Michigan State (91%, with 9% cloudy). Although the home state school is currently the overwhelming favorite, the reality is this - Michigan State rarely signs five-star recruits, home state or not. In fact, Michigan State has signed only four five-star recruits in the 20-year history of the 247 Composite, and the Spartans will have a difficult time landing Dobbs once the powerhouse programs start turning up the heat. And the current turmoil in East Lansing will not help Sparty's cause. The usual suspects - Ohio State, Alabama, and Clemson - will all make Dobbs a top priority.

Ryan Jacoby (Mentor OH; 6'5" 265 lbs; unranked in 247 Composite)

Ryan Jacoby is a "sleeper" prospect at this early stage. He is a four-star according to 247 Sports (#30 offensive tackle, #234 overall, #8 in Ohio), but just a three-star according to Rivals (unranked at offensive tackle and overall, #21 in Ohio). All eleven crystal balls are currently on Ohio State, and Jacoby openly admits that Ohio State is at the top of his short list (a list that probably has just one school on it). If Jacoby has an OFFER, then he's in this class.

Michael Tarquin (Belleview FL; 6'5" 290 lbs; #30 offensive tackle; #263 overall)

With Doug Nester in the fold, Darnell Wright on the cusp, Ryan Jacoby being a local kid, and Devontae Dobbs worth chasing until Signing Day, Michael Tarquin might end up being the odd man out in the class of 2019. Right now, the Buckeyes are the favorite to land Tarquin (56% of the crystal balls), with Oklahoma ("warmer" status, recent Junior Day, recent in-home, but no crystal balls) being the other top choice.

Xavier Truss (Warwick RI Bishop Hendricken; 6'7" 325 lbs; unranked in 247 Composite)

Xavier Truss is a perfect example of Rivals southern bias. While 247 Sports has Truss as a four-star prospect, the #10 offensive tackle, and the #63 recruit overall, Rivals has the kid un-starred and un-ranked. Needless to say, Rivals is way out of line, as Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Oklahoma are all in hot pursuit of this massive tackle prospect. Since January 5th, Penn State has gained nine crystal balls and they are the unanimous favorite, which probably means that this recruiting battle will be over rather soon.

Harry Miller (Buford GA; 6'4 310 lbs; #11 offensive tackle; #64 overall)

Here's a new name that you need to know - Harry Miller, a huge offensive lineman from the State of Georgia. Although Miller is listed as a tackle prospect, with his size he might be better suited for the interior of the offensive line. Miller made an unofficial visit to Ohio State during the MLK long weekend (January 13th-15th), and since that visit Ohio State has garnered three crystal balls, including one from a UGa insider.

Zeke Correll (Cincinnati OH Anderson; 6'3" 270 lbs; #10 offensive guard; #286 overall)

Zeke Corell is one of the few interior offensive linemen that Ohio State is pursuing in the class of 2019. The Buckeyes currently have 88% of the crystal balls in their favor, and if the staff pushes for Correll they should get a commitment from him. If there is no room at the Buckeye Inn, then Notre Dame (the remaining 12% of crystal balls), Kentucky (family ties), Michigan State, and Penn State should be strong contenders for his services.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN

Zach Harrison (Lewis Center OH Olentangy; 6'5" 225 lbs; #2 weakside defensive end; #4 overall)

I've followed recruiting since the class of 1984, Chris Spielman's recruiting class. In fact, I began following recruiting because of Chris Spielman, the definition of a "can't miss" prospect - All American, national player of the year, Wheaties box, etc. Since 1984, there have been only a handful of "can't miss" prospects from Ohio - Robert Smith, Orlando Pace, Charles Woodson, Andy Katzenmoyer, Ted Ginn, Beanie Wells. It looks like defensive end Zach Harrison is the next "can't miss" prospect to hail from the Buckeye State. Harrison is a consensus 5-star prospect who already looks NFL ready. Ohio State is the early leader with all nine crystal balls going the Buckeyes' way so far.

Noah Potter (Mentor OH; 6'5" 250 lbs; #20 strongside defensive end; #232 overall)

Like his high school teammate Ryan Jacoby (see above), Noah Potter is all Buckeye. Right now, Ohio State has all fourteen crystal balls going its way and that's not likely to change any time soon. If Potter has an OFFER, then he's in this class. If not, then Penn State is probably a distant second on Potter's list of schools.

Ani Izuchukwu (Nashville TN Davidson Academy; 6'4" 230 lbs; #13 weakside end; #219 overall)

Ani Izuchukwu is another kid from Tennessee who is apparently avoiding the Knoxville Tire Fire and giving the Buckeyes a serious look. Alabama owns the lone crystal ball (from way back in June of 2017), and the Tide just received an unofficial visit from Izuchukwu on February 3rd. Izuchukwu has already been to Ohio State at least twice (FNL, Maryland game), and the Buckeyes will be very much in the mix if the staff makes a push for his services. And they very well might, as there has not been much buzz at the defensive end position so far in the class of 2019. EDIT: The day after Ani's unofficial visit to Alabama (February 4th), another crystal ball came in for The Tide. Maybe it's about time to scratch this name off the list....

Brandon Smith (Mineral VA Louisa County; 6'5" 215 lbs; #4 weakside defensive end; #35 overall)

Brandon Smith is a recruit whom the Buckeyes will chase until the bitter end, and they are definitely in chase mode right now. Penn State is the clear leader with 80% of the crystal balls, with Florida State earning the remaining 20% of the predictions. Ohio State (unofficial visit for Maryland game) is still in the mix, along with Notre Dame, Alabama, and just about everybody else in the country. One to watch, but not to get excited about at this point.

Jowon Briggs (Cincinnati OH Walnut Hills; 6'3" 275 lbs; #5 defensive tackle; #75 overall)

Jowon Briggs appears to be the Buckeyes' top target at defensive tackle for the class of 2019, but Notre Dame is the early front runner (80% of crystal balls, including all of the most recent). It's still very early, of course, and if the Irish lose steam then Ohio State (20% of crystal balls), Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Alabama will be in hot pursuit.

Tyler Davis (Apopka FL Wekiva; 6'2" 261 lbs; #16 defensive tackle; #260 overall)

A name that you probably haven't heard much of is Tyler Davis, a defensive tackle prospect from Florida. Davis has already made two unofficial visits to Ohio State (FNL, MSU game) and his lone crystal ball (from December of 2017) is on Ohio State. Florida is also a school of interest, and Miami recently entered the ring with an offer (January 18th). With Ohio State having made very few defensive tackle offers to date, Davis might have a real shot to end up in the Buckeyes' class of 2019.

LINEBACKERS

Cade Stover (Mansfield OH Lexington; 6'4" 215 lbs; #8 outside linebacker; #112 overall)

I'm actually kind of surprised that Cade Stover hasn't committed to Ohio State yet (and in fact he may very be a longtime silent verbal). Stover is at the top of the Buckeyes' wish list and I fully expect him to be part of Ohio State's class of 2019. Thirteen crystal balls have been cast, and all of them are in favor of Ohio State. It's only a matter of time....

Kane Patterson (Nashville TN Christ Presbyterian Academy; 6'1" 212 lbs; #15 outside linebacker; #273 overall)

Kane Patterson is a fast-rising prospect from a small school (about a hundred kids per class) who has received four major offers in the past two weeks (Ohio State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Missouri). Although Kane's 247 Composite rankings are rather low, 247 Sport's own rankings place him as the #7 outside linebacker and #105 overall prospect in the country. If Patterson can somehow maintain his sleeper status for the next eleven months, then Ohio State looks to be in a good position to sign him. If as expected his recruitment continues to blow up, then a lot of southern schools will undoubtedly get involved. This could be one of the more interesting recruiting battles for the class of 2019.

Lance Dixon (West Bloomfield MI; 6'2" 195 lbs; #25 outside linebacker; #430 overall)

This looks to be a classic Big Ten East battle, with Michigan State (83% of crystal balls), Michigan (17% of crystal balls), Ohio State, and Penn State all being early favorites. Urban Meyer just made a visit to West Bloomfield (January 31st) and personally delivered an offer, so the Buckeyes are definitely interested. All of the crystal ball action occurred before the Buckeyes became involved, so it will be interesting to see if we get any "flips" to Ohio State in the upcoming weeks.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Daxton Hill (Tulsa OK Booker T. Washington; 6'1" 190 lbs; #2 safety; #24 overall)

Ohio State snagged a top-100 safety prospect from the State of Oklahoma in 2018 (Josh Proctor), and can they do it again in 2019? Normally, five-star prospects from Oklahoma end up signing with the Sooners, the Cowboys, or maybe the Longhorns, but the Buckeyes are a real player here. The OSU and the other OSU each own one crystal ball. The good news is that the Buckeyes' crystal ball was cast more recently (January 22nd) by the ultra-accurate (and BP alum) Greg Powers. There's obviously a long way to go, but Ohio State is in a very good position early on.

Lewis Cine (Everett MA; 6'2" 180 lbs; #3 safety; #36 overall)

Because Ohio State is #DBU, the Buckeyes will always get a look from top defensive back prospects. Lewis Cine is one of those guys. Right now, Ohio State is high on Cine's list, but Penn State (89% of crystal balls) is the prohibitive favorite with Michigan also hanging around (11% of crystal balls). Probably not much to see here for Buckeye fans.

Jaylen McCollough (Powder Springs GA Hillgrove; 6'1" 190 lbs; #4 safety; #73 overall)

Jaylen McCollough has Ohio State in his top-6, but that's largely just for show. Florida State owns all the early crystal balls (58%), while Alabama has all the most recent ones (42%). Unless something changes over the next few months (like a Spring Game visit), this recruiting battle is probably over so far as Ohio State is concerned.

Cam'Ron Kelly (Chesapeake VA Oscar Smith; 6'1" 190 lbs; #18 cornerback; #180 overall)

There's not a lot of recruiting buzz concerning Cam'Ron Kelly, and there have been just two crystal balls cast for him, one going to Clemson and the other going to Virginia. But Kelly is obviously interested in Ohio State, as he made an unofficial visit for the Penn State game (October 28th) and followed that up with another trip to Columbus this weekend (February 3rd). The Buckeyes like recruiting cornerbacks with size, so keep an eye on this kid going forward.

Marlin "MJ" Devonshire (Aliquippa PA; 5'11" 170 lbs; #43 cornerback; #480 overall)

MJ Devonshire does not possess ideal size for a cornerback and he's just a three-star prospect, so it's difficult to say whether he has an Ohio State offer or OFFER. The Buckeyes have some interest to be sure, and Devonshire made an unofficial visit to Ohio State in November. All three crystal balls are currently on West Virginia, and the Mountaineers will be in good shape if the Buckeyes slow play this recruit.

ATHLETES

Ronnie Hickman (Wayne NJ DePaul; 6'1" 209 lbs; #11 athlete; #107 overall)

Ronnie "The Rocket" Hickman is a true two-way player who may end up as a wide receiver or defensive back in college. At 209 pounds and likely still growing, I'll put my money on "safety". Hickman made an unofficial visit to Ohio State over the weekend (February 3rd), which was at least his fourth trip to Columbus. That's a very good sign. It's also a very good sign that four recruiting experts have cast crystal ball predictions for Hickman, and all four have him ending up at Ohio State. Penn State will also be a serious player, with Michigan and Notre Dame also somewhere in the mix.

Jashawn Sheffield (St. Simons Island GA Frederica Academy; 6'1" 178 lbs; #10 athlete; #56 overall)

When you are Ohio State, you get mentioned in just about every top-whatever recruit's top-whatever list. Jashawn Sheffield is no exception to that rule. Ohio State will get some love, some positive tweets, and probably a visit or two, but Florida State is Sheffield's "dream school" and all fifteen crystal balls are pointing toward Tallahassee. You do the math....

Jaylin Simpson (St. Simons Island GA Frederica Academy; 5'11" 165 lbs; #18 athlete; #228 overall)

Jaylin Simpson is a high school teammate of Jashawn Sheffield (see above) and there's a pretty good chance that he follows his buddy to Tallahassee. The crystal balls break down as follows: Florida State 44%; Ohio State 33%; Clemson 22%; with a 1% rounding error. For what it's worth, Simpson is generally being recruited as a cornerback but with his shiftiness he might be a good fit in Ohio State's H-back role.

_______________________________________________________________

To follow is a plausible Ohio State recruiting class of 2019, based on current crystal ball projections (along with an occasional bit of inside information). This is not necessarily who I think will end up at Ohio State, and it is definitely not my "dream team". There is a heavy emphasis on offensive linemen due to depth issues, and wide receivers due to performance issues.

As always, things change quickly in recruiting, and in recent years we've seen more and more strange recruitments with top prospects flipping and flopping all over the place (Emory Jones, Jaiden Woodbey, Brenton Cox) ... with look-at-me types "shocking the world!!!!" (Jackson Carman) ... with recruits emerging out of nowhere in the eleventh hour (Matthew Baldwin, Chris Olave) ... and with some kids actually sticking with unexpected commitments for months and months (Josh Proctor). Enjoy the ride!

The redshirt senior’s suspension comes from a violation of team rules.

Hours before the Ohio State Buckeyes were set to take on the Illinois FIghting Illini on the hardwood, an announcement came out that redshirt senior guard Kam Williams was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Chris Holtmann announced @OhioStateHoops senior guard Kam Williams has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

— Dan Wallenberg (@OSUADAthComm) February 4, 2018

The suspension is a blow to the Buckeyes’ on-court production and leadership. Williams is averaging 8.0 points per game, and tied a career-high in rebounds (6) against Indiana—Ohio State’s last opponent. Looking into the near future, Williams needs 28 more points to become the latest member of the 1,000-point club at OSU.

Amongst the team, Williams is the most senior of members when it comes to getting into the game. He’s played in 126 games, starting in 47 of them.

On the season, Ohio State is 19-5 (10-1), and takes on the Illini at the Value City Arena at noon. After Illinois, the Buckeyes are in a primetime showdown with No. 3 Purdue on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The Buckeyes allowed six goals on just 24 shots.

It was a tough Saturday night in Columbus, as the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes were doubled up on the scoresheet by the now 4-13-1-1 Michigan State Spartans.

This one was ugly pretty much from the get go as Michigan State scored three times in the first 19 and a half minutes. Ohio State got one back at 19:47 of the first, as Dakota Joshua found a puck in front of the Michigan State net on the power play and got the Buckeyes to within two goals.

A little momentum with 13 seconds left in the first sounds like a good thing right? How much worse could the second get? OSU outshot the Spartans 9-7 in the first and looked like they had settled the game down a bit with that late marker.

Well, it turns out it could get a lot worse and momentum is a fake construct made with available faulty heuristics. Michigan State outshot OSU 15-12 in the second and scored once at 11:20 to make it 4-1, and then again at 14:20 to make it 5-1. Not a banner night in net for Sean Romeo, who only stopped 12 shots on the night.

Ohio State did get one back at 14:58, with Matthew Weis scoring on a rush on the power play off the backhand. Ronnie Hein and Mason Jobst had the assists. Maaaaaybe this one would give Ohio State the momentum to start down the comeback trail. But alas, it did not.

They would score one to make it 5-3 early in the third as Hein sniped one in from the slot, again on the power play, at 6:02 of the third. Jobst and Weis had the assists. All three OSU goals came on the powerplay.

Michigan State would add another with 1:27 left in regulation to go up 6-3 and that’s where the score would mercifully lie. MSU, again a 10-17-1 overall team and 4-13-1-1 in conference, scored six goals at even strength against a top five team. Ohio State could only score with a Spartan in the box.

If Ohio State is going to have to rely on the powerplay to this degree in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments, exits will probably come fairly early. The last place team in the Big Ten should not score six even strength goals against you. What’s No. 2 Notre Dame going to do next week when OSU visits South Bend, Ind.?

Hopefully you can chalk this one up to Romeo having a rare off game and the team looking ahead to its biggest games of the season so far next weekend at Notre Dame. The team is still up six points on Wisconsin for the the second place position in the Big Ten standings, so all is far from lost. And it is just one game. But boy, with series with Notre Dame, Minnesota and Wisconsin coming up before the Big Ten tournament, you want to bank as many points as you can.

Ohio State has a showdown with Purdue on the horizon, but first they’ll close out a four-game home stand against Illinois.

Before heading to West Lafayette, Ill. to take on Big Ten leaders Purdue on Wednesday night, Ohio State has one last hurdle to clear, as they’ll host Illinois today at Value City Arena. The game against the Fighting Illini will close out a four-game home stand for the Buckeyes, which has seen them defeat Nebraska and Indiana, with a loss at the buzzer to Penn State sandwiched in between.

After suffering their first Big Ten loss of the season last Thursday, Ohio State didn’t take long to get back to their winning ways, easily handling Indiana, 71-56, on Tuesday night. The Buckeyes jumped out to a nine-point lead by the first television timeout, and didn’t look back; not letting the Hoosiers within double digits the rest of the way. The victory gave Ohio State wins in Columbus over Michigan, Michigan State, and Indiana in the same season for the first time since 2011.

The Buckeyes got solid contributions from all of their starters on Tuesday, with four of the five reaching double figures in the scoring column. The only starter that didn’t reach double digits was Kam Williams, but he just barely missed hitting that mark, finishing with nine points. Jae’Sean Tate paced Ohio State with 16 points, while Kaleb Wesson added 14.

After struggling with bench production lately, Ohio State received a welcome surprise with the effort they got from Micah Potter on Tuesday night. After scoring 13 points off the bench against Northwestern last month, Potter has been quiet of late, scoring just six points over the three games leading into Tuesday night’s game. Against the Hoosiers, Potter scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds. If the Buckeyes are able to get more performances from Potter off of the bench like they did against Northwestern and Indiana, Ohio State will be an even tougher out in March.

Ohio State will now turn their attention to Illinois, who has played the Buckeyes tough over the last few years. In their only meeting last season, Illinois defeated Ohio State 75-70 in Champaign, Ill. While the Buckeyes won both games against the Fighting Illini in the 2015-16 season, those meetings were decided by a combined seven points. Ohio State currently trails Illinois 71-102 in the all-time series, but at least the Buckeyes have posted a 44-41 record in Columbus.

Despite Illinois currently sitting near the bottom of the Big Ten standings, Ohio State can’t afford to be caught looking ahead to their matchup with Purdue on Wednesday night. The Fighting Illini have been playing better basketball of late, winning their last two games.

Last time out, Illinois easily defeated Rutgers 91-60 on Tuesday night. The Fighting Illini started to pull away from Rutgers in the middle of the first half, building a 41-22 lead by halftime. The second half saw more of the same, as Kipper Nichols led Illinois with 19 points, and Trent Frazier added 17 in the blowout victory. Prior to Tuesday night’s game, Illinois squeaked by Indiana 73-71 last Wednesday to earn their first conference victory of the season.

This will be new Illinois head coach Brad Underwood’s first meeting with Ohio State. After Illinois moved on from former Ohio State assistant John Groce following last season, the Fighting Illini turned to Underwood. Last season he led Oklahoma State to the NCAA Tournament in his only year with the school, and prior to coming to Stillwater, Underwood amassed a 89-14 record in three seasons with Stephen F. Austin, with NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his three seasons.

A lot of Illinois struggles this year can be attributed to the turnover in their roster. After reaching the quarterfinals of the NIT last year, Illinois has had to replace eight players who either graduated or transferred. The Fighting Illini have seen 48.7% of their minutes this year played by newcomers, and 39.9% of their points have come from new players. Illinois is starting to come together of late, which is why they could give Ohio State some problems today.

Numbers to know

20

If Ohio State defeats Illinois today, it will give Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes their 20th win of the season. Holtmann has reached 20 wins in each of his last four seasons as head coach. When Holtmann records his 20th win this year, he’ll become the third first-year Ohio State head coach to reach 20 wins, joining Gary Williams and Thad Matta.

25

In the win over Indiana on Tuesday night, both Andre and Kaleb Wesson were credited with an assist, giving Ohio State seven players with at least 25 assists on the season. The last time Ohio State had seven players record at least 25 assists during the year was during the 2011-12 season. C.J. Jackson leads the Buckeyes with 103 assists, while Jae’Sean Tate, Andrew Dakich, Keita Bates-Diop, and Musa Jallow are the other Buckeyes who have recorded 25 assists so far this year.

24.5

Illinois is forcing opponents into turnovers on 24.5% of their possessions this year, which is third in the NCAA. The Fighting Illini are forcing 18.5 turnovers per game, which leads the Big Ten. After forcing at least 17 turnovers in a game in just five of 35 games last year, the Fighting Illini have reached that mark in 13 games this year. On Tuesday night, Illinois forced Rutgers into 25 turnovers, marking the fourth time this year in which the Fighting Illini have forced their opponents into at least 25 turnovers in a game.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

It was quite a night on Tuesday for the senior, who was making his 100th start for the Buckeyes. The Pickerington product didn’t disappoint in his milestone start, scoring a team-high 16 points. Tate also grabbed six rebounds, giving him 702 for his career, making him the 14th Buckeye to record 700 career rebounds. Tate is just five points away from passing Larry Bolden for 24th on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list.

Keita Bates-Diop

Bates-Diop continued his stellar season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the victory over Indiana. The double-double was the 15th of Bates-Diop’s career, and the ninth that he has recorded this year. Ohio State is 14-1 when Bates-Diop records a double-double, with the only loss coming earlier this season in the PK80 Classic against Butler. One of Bates-Diop’s double-doubles came back in 2016 against Illinois, where he scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the 68-63 win in overtime over the Fighting Illini.

Illinois

Leron Black

On a roster that is full of newcomers, Black is one of the few returning starters. After starting 27 of 31 games last year, Black has started every game except for one this season. The redshirt junior is leading Illinois in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game, and is one of just two Fighting Illini players averaging double figures in scoring. The forward is also Illinois’ leading rebounder this year, as he is averaging 5.2 rebounds per game.

Trent Frazier

The future of Illinois basketball shows some promise with the ball in Frazier’s hand. After spending the first half of the season coming off of the bench, Frazier started his first game in early January against Michigan, scoring eight points. Since then Frazier has been tremendous, reaching double figures in each of the six games. The freshman’s best game came in the loss to Iowa, where he hit seven three-pointers on his way to 27 points. In Tuesday’s win over Rutgers, Frazier hit five triples and finished with 17 points.

The Buckeyes improve to 1-0 on the season.

The No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team opened up their 2018 season with a 13-6 win over Cleveland State Saturday in Cleveland, moving to 1-0 on the young season.

Christian Feliziani won the opening faceoff for the Buckeyes, but a forced turnover by Cleveland State gave Vikings the ball on attack. A quick ensuing goal by Gideon Brockenbrough put Cleveland State up 1-0 early.

Feliziani won the ensuing faceoff, with sophomore midfielder Ryan Terefenko taking the ball down on attack for the Buckeyes. Cleveland State goalie Caleb Espinoza saved sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire’s first shot of the season, but a quick turnover from the Vikings gave Ohio State the ball back. Freshman attackman Colby Smith took advantage in his first collegiate game, finding the back of the net on a long goal assisted by junior defenseman Matt Borges.

Back at midfield, Feliziani won his third-straight faceoff. After trading possessions, Cleveland State was called for slashing, giving Ohio State their first man-up opportunity of the season. Leclaire capitalized seconds later, putting Ohio State up 2-1 with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter.

Ohio State won the ensuing faceoff, but a turnover by goalie Matthew Smidt gave Cleveland State’s Michael Wilson a quick goal to tie things back up.

After the goal, freshman Justin Inacio, the No. 7 recruit in the nation last season, replaced Feliziani on the circle, winning his first collegiate faceoff and giving senior John Kelly a quick goal.

A Cleveland State penalty gave the Buckeyes their second man-up opportunity heading into the second quarter. Senior attackman Colin Chell took advantage, coming from behind the net and diving for his first goal of the season to put the Buckeyes up 4-2.

Inacio won the ensuing faceoff, giving Ohio State the ball on attack. After trading turnovers, Kelly scored his second goal of the game, putting Ohio State up 5-2 midway through the quarter. The Vikings finally won their first faceoff on the following attempt, and ultimately scored on a Wilson goal, narrowing Ohio State’s lead to two.

Feliziani came back in at the circle, but lost the faceoff to Cleveland State. The Buckeyes survived a man-down opportunity after a penalty on junior midfielder Logan Maccani, but gave up a goal just before the half to take a 5-4 advantage to the break.

Inacio won the opening faceoff of the second half on a violation by Cleveland State, leading to an unassisted goal by junior attackman Jack Jasinski to put the Buckeyes back up by two early in the third. The freshman won the next faceoff, but an errant shot by Jasinski gave the Vikings the ball. After a turnover, the Buckeyes gained the ball back, setting up on offense and setting up Leclaire for his secong goal of the day.

Cleveland State came right back, winning the ensuing faceoff and immediately scoring to keep the gap to two. Feliziani came back in at midfield and gave the Buckeyes the ball on attack. After settling into a nearly two-minute possession, freshman midfielder Jackson Reid found the back of the net on a feed from Leclaire for his first collegiate goal. Senior attackman Hank Bethke continued to pile on, adding a goal of his own midway through the quarter to put the Buckeyes up 9-5. Leclaire added on his third goal of the day, assisted by Terefenko in transition, to put Ohio State up by five with 5:22 remaining in the third.

Cleveland State closed the gap to four after a goal on a long possession from Nick Wendel. The Vikings won the ensuing faceoff, but the Buckeyes got the ball back on a turnover. However, Kelly made up for it with his third goal of the day with 1:07 left in the quarter, assisted by Chell.

Ohio State maintained possession early in the fourth quarter, even being penalized for a shot clock violation, before Kelly found the back of the net once again for his fourth goal of the day. Bethke added his second score shortly thereafter, giving the Buckeyes a 13-6 advantage with 3:54 remaining in the quarter-- a score that would hold for the rest of the game.

Kelly led the team with four goals on the day, followed by Leclaire (3) and Bethke (2). In all, seven Buckeyes scored against the Vikings.

The Buckeyes held a 40-19 shot advantage on the day. Smidt had seven saves to Espinoza’s nine. Ohio State held a 16-6 advantage in faceoffs, and picked up 36 groundballs to Cleveland State’s 18. Senior defenseman Freddy Friebott, Reid and Terefenko each collected four groundballs on the day.

Next up, Ohio State is scheduled to face Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 10 at noon in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
