The Buckeyes have only lost two games this season in Big Ten play. Both belong to the Nittany Lions.

It was a rough night on the road for the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (22-6, 13-2), as they fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions (19-9, 9-6) in State College, Penn., 79-56.

The three-point shot was a big reason for Penn State’s victory at home. The Nittany Lions went 9-of-20 from beyond the arc, with guards Tony Carr and Shep Garner leading the way from downtown.

Guard Tony Carr led all players on the floor with 30 points, and went 4-of-8 from three-point range. Carr also had 5 rebounds on the night. Garner ended the game in double figures with 13 points. From three-point range, Garner went 4-of-7.

On the other end, Keita Bates-Diop scored 10 points for the Buckeyes on 4-of-11 shooting. KBD also brought in 5 rebounds.

C.J. Jackson put up 13 points for the OSU, with all but two points being scored in the second half. Jackson ended up leading the team’s scoring effort in Happy Valley.

Here’s how this one went down.

Penn State won the opening tip, but turned it over around the far-side wing. Ohio State took advantage of the turnover—leading to Kaleb Wesson nailing a mid-range jumper. The Nittany Lions would answer right back with a Lamar Stevens layup.

Play would stop a minute later as Wesson appeared to sprain his ankle. As the timeout ended, Wesson was seen going back to the locker room. Just before he departed, he hit another shot (a layup) to give the Bucks a 4-2 advantage.

OSU’s lead wouldn’t last for long, as the Nittany Lions went on a mini 6-0 run. Chippy play led to Jae’Sean Tate receiving a technical foul, as well as PSU head coach Patrick Chambers for arguing with the officials. Combined with a 4-minute scoring drought, the Buckeyes enabled a 12-2 PSU run, leading to the Scarlet and Gray’s early deficit, 17-8, with 12:38 left before intermission. Steals leading to dunks, and Carr pulling up from downtown were the catalysts for the Nittany Lions’ early runaway from the Bucks.

The Nittany Lions continued to find their rhythm from three. Garner, like Carr, unleashed a shot from basically the parking lot—with it hitting nothing but net. Penn State was 3-of-7 early from beyond the arc. Ohio State, however, couldn’t get the rim or net to be friendly from distance; OSU missed their first six shots from the land of three. As a matter of fact, field goal shooting all around was a struggle for Holtmann’s squad. They went 4-plus minutes without sinking a shot. Fortunately, that slump ended with a Bates-Diop layup. But alas, the damage was done. At the under-8 minute timeout, the home team had a 25-14 lead over the visiting Buckeyes.

Ohio State then got a little momentum. A double block of Stevens led to the Buckeyes getting a look from three—but they missed. However, PSU went cold. A 3-minute scoring drought mixed with an 0-from-5 field goal mark topped off with three turnovers during that timespan got the Buckeyes within nine, 25-16.

Unfortunately, though, the Bucks couldn’t make the most of the Nittany Lions’ woes. Josh Reaves and Stevens both connected on the long ball, and before long, Penn State had charged out to a 35-18 lead with under three minutes left before halftime. The Bryce Jordan Center was rocking, especially after Kaleb Wesson got his shot blocked, leading to a shot-clock violation.

The pace started causing problems for the Buckeyes. Andre Wesson got the ball poked loose by Stevens, who then flipped it to Jamari Wheeler for an easy layup. Ohio State couldn’t get out the hole they dug themselves into during the first half, mostly due to the shooting struggles. Going into the half, OSU missed seven straight shots—going nearly four minutes without making a field goal. Over the course of their final 11 shots in the half, the Buckeyes only made one, thanks to a Wesson layup with 3:56 remaining.

Right before the half, Reaves threw a full-court pass to Carr—who caught the ball just to the left of the basket. As two Buckeyes stumbled after reaching for the ball, Carr got off a shot. He made the shot, and Micah Potter, who was falling down, got called for a foul. That play pretty much summed up how the half was going for the Buckeyes. Carr knocked down the and-1, and a Christian Laettner-esque shot (a turnaround jumper after catching a three quarters court pass) from Potter clanked off the rim.

At halftime, Penn State had a commanding lead, 45-21, behind a 16-point outing from Carr. From three-point range, the Nittany Lions were shooting at 50 percent. Five-of-10 shots from distance went down, with Carr hitting two of them. On the other end, OSU shot zero percent from downtown, going 0-for-7. From all spots on the floor, the Buckeyes shot 29 percent (8-28), with Kaleb Wesson leading the team in points (7) and rebounds (5). Bates-Diop had four points and one rebound in the first half.

Right after halftime, PSU went back to well (aka the three-point shot). Stevens missed on the first shot, but on the second shot, they found what they were looking for: a make. Garner delivered a shot from the parking lot, lifting the Nittany Lions lead to 48-21. Garner wasn’t done yet, though. Two minutes after sinking his first three of the half, he did it again. Hip-hop artist Flava Flav, who is related to Garner, was up on his feet after seeing the three-point shots fall. After the second Garner three of the half went down, PSU was out to a 54-27 lead at the under-16 minute media timeout.

Ohio State was able to get an 8-0 run going after the media timeout. Layups from C.J. Jackson and Kyle Young helped get the run going. During the run, PSU went four minutes without a point—helping the Buckeyes claw their way back from a 20-plus point deficit. At the 17:49 mark of the second half, the Bucks were down 30; by the 12:05 mark, they were down 18, 55-37.

But, Garner found a way to put a roadblock on the Buckeyes’ comeback. The senior popped a three that rattled around the rim before going in. The Garner three put Penn State up 21, but a tipin from Young and another three from KBD got the visitors within 16, 58-42, by the time the media timeout came with 10:32 left in the half.

The Buckeyes chipped away at the Nittany Lions lead, but they couldn’t get within 10. The output from Carr, and PSU’s ability to sink the three-point shot were too much for the Scarlet and Gray to overcome on this night in State College.

Penn State taking down the No. 8 team in the land wasn’t the only upset on the night. Wisconsin took down No. 6 Purdue in Madison, Wisc., 57-53. With the loss, Purdue has now lost three in a row—with the Buckeyes starting the Boilermakers’ losing streak back on Feb. 7.

Up next for Ohio State will be the No. 22 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday. That game is slated to take place at 1 p.m. ET from the Chrysler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. CBS will broadcast the game.

Urban Meyer and Ohio State have been making a shift in the type of quarterback they’re recruiting

The Buckeye head coach has been bringing in more pro-style quarterbacks over the last few recruiting cycles.

“The signs have been there for a few years that coach Urban Meyer ideally would like to evolve his offense by adding more vertical passing elements.”

Austin Ward, Land of 10

Ohio State has had some incredibly productive quarterbacks since Urban Meyer took over, but the head coach is constantly on the lookout for the complete quarterback. While Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett won plenty of games during their time at Ohio State, the quarterback Meyer wants to replicate in recruiting is Cardale Jones.

Honestly though, what coach wouldn’t want a quarterback like Jones? A cannon for an arm and the ability to run over defenders when needed to. With the talent of running backs Ohio State brings in, Meyer is likely to focus on a quarterback who has a better handle on throwing the football than running it, but he does want a signal caller who can make plays with his legs when needed.

With the Buckeyes transitioning from Barrett to the likely new starter Dwayne Haskins, Meyer, Kevin Wilson, and Ryan Day will be looking to get their talented wide receivers more involved in the offense. Haskins won’t run the ball as much as Barrett did, and has a better arm, which should help the Ohio State offense evolve into more of a pro-style offense. Early enrollee Matthew Baldwin shares a lot of the same traits as Haskins, which means the Ohio State quarterback position should be in good hands for years to come.

“Obviously it’s a big deal to us, just from where we came from last year it’s a new place for us in the Big Ten. (Coach) has stressed that we have to play better than we did (last time) against Penn State. This game (Thursday) obviously means a lot for where we’ll finish up.”

Ohio State guard C.J. Jackson via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

It isn’t that Ohio State played all that bad when they lost to Penn State on Jan. 25 in Columbus, the Nittany Lions were just shooting at another level three weeks ago. Not only did Penn State hit the first five three-pointers they attempted in the upset of the Buckeyes, but the Nittany Lions finished the game 11-of-14 from behind the three-point arc—with the final of those triples coming from Tony Carr as time expired to give Penn State the victory. The 82 points Ohio State gave up to Penn State in the loss were the most Ohio State has given up in a Big Ten game this year.

Avenging last month’s loss would certainly help Ohio State’s standing in the Big Ten. Currently the Buckeyes control their own destiny, but Michigan State and Purdue are ready to pounce should Ohio State falter down the stretch. If Ohio State wins out, they’ll earn their first outright regular season Big Ten title since 2010-11. Even if the Buckeyes lose one of their final four games and the Spartans and Boilermakers win the rest of their games, Ohio State can still at least claim a share of the Big Ten title.

“I think winningest programs always come down to the players. I’m very happy for the seniors. If anyone a couple years ago told them they would be part of a team with the most wins in Ohio State women’s hockey program, I don’t think they would have believed that.”

Ohio State women’s hockey associate head coach Peter Elander via Andrew Joseph, The Lantern

The Ohio State women’s hockey team has a chance to make some history this weekend, as they close out the regular season at home against Bemidji State. The Buckeyes currently have 20 wins on the season, which is tied with the 2006-07 team for the most in school history. Setting the school record for most wins in a season would be a nice treat for the four seniors who will be suiting up this weekend at home for the last time for the Buckeyes.

To reach the school record for wins, Ohio State will have to defeat a Bemidji State team who split a pair of games with Ohio State in Minnesota in November. The Buckeyes will at least have some momentum on their side, as they have won three of four games heading into this weekend’s matchups with the Beavers.

Currently Ohio State is sitting second in the WCHA, with Minnesota right behind them. A couple wins over Bemidji State could put some distance between the Buckeyes and the Golden Gophers ahead of the WCHA Tournament which starts next week. Ohio State has never made an NCAA Tournament, but if they finish the season strong they just might work themselves into the conversation for a bid.

For the Buckeyes to avenge their only Big Ten loss, they’ll have to hold PSU to under 79% from deep.

With wins against then-No 1. Michigan State and then-No. 3 Purdue, the first season for new Buckeye head coach Chris Holtmann has gone nearly perfectly... nearly. But for one banked three-pointer by Penn State’s Tony Carr, Ohio State could still be undefeated in conference play. After OSU’s Keita Bates-Diop hit an improbable three with five seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 79, Carr one-upped him and banked home the game winner as time expired.

OSU’s lone loss since two days before Christmas, saw five Buckeyes go for double-figures, but the rest of the team only contributed five additional points. On the other end of the floor, the Nittany Lions were unconscious from downtown, hitting 11 of their 14 attempts from behind the arc.

To see if Penn State could recreate the magic they had against the Buckeyes last month, we chatted with Tim Aydin of SB Nation’s Penn State blog, Black Shoe Diaries. You can read the Ohio State half of our conversation over on their site as well.

LGHL: Starting with the win in Columbus late last month, Penn State has won five of six, after going 3-5 over the previous eight. What has Pat Chambers and his stuff done to turn things around in Happy Valley?

BSD: The biggest boost to the team has been hands-down the return of Josh Reaves after an academic-related issue kept him away for most of January. Reaves is the team’s best defensive player and the best all-around player, as he is good for typically scoring in double-figures and garnering a couple of steals. He is also fearless when it comes to taking the ball to the rim, just ask Iowa.

LGHL: Penn State has five guys averaging in double-figures this season (including three sophomores), but after that, no one is above five points per game. If Ohio State can neutralize Tony Carr and Lamar Stevens, do the three double-digit sophomores and the bench players have enough to lead PSU to a victory?

BSD: It’s highly unlikely. Case in point being the lone loss during this most recent six-game stretch at Michigan State, only Tone (28) and Lamar (18) reached double-figures scoring in that one, and PSU ultimately lost by eight. They will need at least three, preferably four, guys to hit double figures if they are going to pull off the improbable season sweep (Carr, Stevens, Reaves, and Watkins all scored in double figures in the first meeting between PSU and OSU).

Nazeer Bostick has been the lone reliable source for any bench scoring whatsoever, so that is why it all comes down to at least three of the starters needing to light it up.

LGHL: At 18-9 and some massive games down the stretch, Penn State likely controls its postseason destiny. With games against OSU, Purdue, Michigan, and a tough Nebraska team, what will the Nittany Lions have to do in order to survive that gauntlet and go dancing in March?

BSD: The team will have to bring their A-game every night. By that, I mean Tony Carr and Shep Garner need to be reliable from beyond the arc, Lamar Stevens needs to be a consistent source for scoring and rebounds, Mike Watkins has to be the rebounding, shot-blocking, and inside scoring threat that he’s proven himself to be at times this season, and Josh Reaves needs to continue to bring that energy and defensive tenacity that has helped spark PSU’s 5-1 record since his return to the court.

The lack of any consistent production off the bench makes the starters playing to their full potential that much more imperative; there cannot be any more off-nights from here on forward if this team is going to at least try to split these remaining games.

Realistically, PSU’s best bet at dancing in March is to go 2-2 in their remaining regular season games and then go on a deep run in the Big Ten tournament, probably all the way to the finals. This is how they were able to sneak into the Big Dance back in 2011 with Talor Battle leading the way.

LGHL: This season, Penn State hasn’t shot particularly well from beyond the arc. On the year, they are shooting just 36.3 percent. However, against Ohio State, they went 11-14 (78.6%). Since then, they have shot just 32.3 percent in five games. Was their barrage from deep in Columbus just a fluke, or was there something about OSU’s defense that allowed them to get that hot that they might be able to replicate?

BSD: Although I can safely predict Penn State will not shoot that well from behind the arc again, it may be a tad disingenuous to call their hot shooting a “fluke.” Even if the percentages haven’t been all that great, you can typically count on either Tony Carr or Shep Garner (or in the case of the first meeting between PSU and OSU, both) to be feeling it from downtown in any given game.

Without having watched a full replay of the game, perhaps OSU didn’t employ zone defense, which PSU has had trouble at times trying to figure out. Whatever defensive strategy was used in the first game though, I would be willing to bet they will scrap it for something different.

LGHL: What do you think will happen in the game?

BSD: Given that PSU will be coming into the game knowing they can still continuing playing their way onto the NCAA tournament bubble and subsequently, play their way into the tournament itself, expect the Lions to come out firing from the get-go. That being said, the Buckeyes’ improved bench production combined with the lack of reliable scoring off the bench for the Lions will ultimately put them over the top. Besides, there’s no way PSU shoots 11-for-14 from downtown again...right?

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes will travel to the Bryce Jordan Center to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

The final stretch of games for Ohio State's surprising regular season is arguably its toughest stretch of games for Chris Holtmann's first Buckeye team.

Ohio State is set to play three of its last four regular season games away from home, starting with a trip to State College, Pa. to take on Penn State, the only team to hand the Buckeyes a conference loss this season.

WHO WHERE WHEN TV
Penn State (18-9, 8-6) Bryce Jordan Center 8 p.m. BTN
The Nittany Lion fan base is planning a white-out of the Bryce Jordan Center in an effort to create a raucous atmosphere as the No. 8-ranked Buckeyes invade Happy Valley.

Holtmann said Wednesday that while having played in an intense environment at Purdue on Feb. 7 was beneficial, it doesn't necessarily mean the Buckeyes will play well again in front of a hostile crowd.

"I think it helps. I think in many ways, we have more matchup issues with Penn State than anybody in the league. Every team is kind of different. The Purdue game was great to play in that environment, and to be able to win that," Holtmann said. "To sneak that one out when it didn't look good, was encouraging, but I don't think you can say, 'We responded well to adversity this game, so it's guaranteed we are going to do it the next time,' because that is not the case. We are going to have to go out and prove it again."

OPPONENT BREAKDOWN
Since defeating Ohio State on Tony Carr's buzzer-beating heave from just inside of half court on Jan. 25, the Nittany Lions have won four of their last five games, with the lone loss coming to Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.

Carr is pushing Ohio State's Keita Bates-Diop for the Big Ten scoring title, and a second win against the Buckeyes could very well get Penn State into the NCAA Tournament, as the Nittany Lions sit firmly on the bubble and in sixth place in the conference.

The Nittany Lions, much like the Buckeyes, get the majority of their scoring from their starting five, as all five starters average 10 or more points per game. One of those starters is Josh Reaves, who missed a portion of the season for academic reasons. He returned for Penn State's victory over Ohio State, in which he scored 10 points off the bench, before returning to the starting lineup against the Spartans.

Holtmann said he believes the Nittany Lions are a team that could be even higher in the Big Ten standings if Reaves would have been available for the entire season.

PENN STATE'S PROJECTED STARTING FIVE
PLAYER POS HT WT MIN PPG RPG APG SPG BPG
TONY CARR G 6-5 204 34.2 19.3 4.5 4.9 0.9 0.1
LAMAR STEVENS F 6-8 226 32.1 15.7 6.2 1.8 0.7 1.0
MIKE WATKINS F 6-9 254 28.0 13.0 9.7 0.7 1.0 2.6
JOSH REAVES G 6-4 210 29.7 10.9 4.7 3.3 2.3 0.7

"I really think if Josh Reaves had been available for their other Big Ten games, we would be looking at a team right now that would be one, two or three in the league with as good as they are and the pieces they have around them," Holtmann said. "I think they are really talented and play well together. I think (Reaves) adds a whole different element to them because he plays his role at such a high level."

Reaves has proven his versatility all season, as a long, athletic guard that can rebound the basketball as well as provide immediate scoring. He averages nearly five rebounds per game while also shooting the ball at a 52.5 percent clip from the floor, and leads the Big Ten in steals per game, swiping 2.3 per contest.

Penn State, of course, would not be where it is at this point in the season without Carr, who Holtmann described as a potential first-round NBA draft pick. Carr ranks in the top five of the Big Ten in both scoring (19.3 ppg) and assists (4.9 apg) while shooting 46.2 percent from behind the three-point arc.

His backcourt mate, Shep Garner, is also one of the league's premier three-point shooters. The senior has connected on 41 percent of his long balls this season and has buried 73 shots from behind the arc this season. The Nittany Lions connected on a school-record 78.6 percent of their three-point shots against Ohio State in the first meeting between the two schools, as both Garner and Carr hit on 4-of-5 attempts from deep.

Inside, Penn State features one of the leagues best shot-blockers in Mike Watkins, who swats 2.5 shots per game. Fellow frontcourt player Lamar Stevens gave Ohio State problems inside in the first matchup, getting to the free throw line nine times, finishing with 15 points in the win over the Buckeyes.

BUCKEYE BREAKDOWN
Ohio State received a piece of good news Wednesday when Holtmann announced that veteran guard Kam Williams would return from suspension and be available to play against the Nittany Lions. However, what his role will be moving forward is unknown.

Holtmann said Wednesday that Williams will have to earn back his role with the Buckeyes, whatever that might be, as the regular season winds down.

"We had conversations and meetings that I will leave private. He has fulfilled those. I don't know that I can be certain on what it will look like in terms of his role, because obviously we have played well in this last stretch," Holtmann said Wednesday. "He will have to earn his way back to whatever role gives our team the best chance of winning."

RELATED Keita Bates-Diop Finally Getting The National Attention He Deserves

In Williams' absence, sophomore forward Andre Wesson has stepped into the starting role and has performed admirably. Wesson scored just two points in his first career start against Illinois, but then exploded for a career-high 13 points – including a crucial banked-in three-pointer – in a 64-63 upset victory over Purdue on Feb. 7.

Holtmann said he doesn't anticipate making a change to his starting lineup ahead of the Penn State matchup, but wouldn't rule out a last-minute change either, stating he was curious to see how Ohio State's final practice before the game went.

"Both guys have strengths that they bring. The reality is, it's hard to play 10 or 11 guys right now. Most teams are playing eight or nine guys, so minutes get trimmed a little bit," Holtmann said. "Kam returning will affect some guys' minutes potentially, but it could also affect his minutes. He is going to have to understand that."

While Williams' minutes could be impacted, the likelihood is that C.J. Jackson will continue to play an integral role for Ohio State down the stretch. Jackson, who left Ohio State's win over Iowa early with cramping issues, is expected to be full-go for the Buckeyes against the Nittany Lions on Thursday night.

RELATED Joey Lane, Ohio State Walk-Ons Earning Late Game Minutes With Hard Work in Practice

Jackson said he has confidence in Wesson to continue to produce in his starting role, adding Wesson's presence gives Ohio State added help defensively.

"I think it balances us more on the defensive end. Andre is good at making shots which helps us a lot," Jackson said. "Defensively, we guard a little bit better with him, Keita, Jae'Sean Tate being able to switch a lot of screens that we have to go through. Defensively, it stabilizes us a little bit more."

That added defensive boost could prove critical for Ohio State, as Penn State's 82 points scored on the Buckeyes in the first meeting were the most points Holtmann's squad has allowed all season to a conference opponent.

HOW IT ALL PLAYS OUT
While Penn State is playing at home and beat Ohio State once already this season, it is probably unrealistic to think that the Nittany Lions are going to shoot 11-for-14 from behind the arc again, even at home.

On the other side, Ohio State is coming off a four-day break. Prior to playing the Nittany Lions the first time, the Buckeyes had played five games in a 12-day stretch, and appeared to be playing with tired legs.

The Nittany Lions have tremendous talent and are one more signature win away from becoming an NCAA Tournament team this season. A win over Ohio State could put them into the Big Dance. But the Buckeyes are playing their best basketball of the season, and have fresh legs.

Prediction: Ohio State 81, Penn State 77

Ohio State will be looking to avenge their lone conference loss so far this season, as they travel to State College to take on Penn State.

Ohio State has just one blemish on their Big Ten record this year, which came last month against Penn State in Columbus. Tonight the Buckeyes travel to State College to try and earn some payback against the Nittany Lions, who have won five of their last six games, and are trying to bolster their case for an NCAA Tournament bid.

On January 25th, Ohio State and Penn State squared off in one of the more entertaining Big Ten games this season. The Nittany Lions came out of the gates hot, hitting the first five three-pointers they attempted, jumping out to a double-digit lead on Ohio State early. The Buckeyes regrouped quickly to head into halftime with a 38-37 lead over the Nittany Lions.

Penn State again found their groove in the second half, and with just under seven minutes remaining held a 69-57 lead. Again, Ohio State was able to claw their way back into the game, and a Keita Bates-Diop three-pointer with five seconds left tied the game at 79. While the Buckeye faithful thought this game would be heading into overtime, Tony Carr had other ideas, burying a three-pointer at the buzzer to hand Ohio State their first Big Ten loss of the season.

At least Ohio State didn’t let the loss to the Nittany Lions affect them too much, and have won four games in a row since falling to Penn State. Last time out the Buckeyes beat Iowa 82-64, giving Ohio State their second win this year over the Hawkeyes. Kaleb Wesson led the way for Ohio State with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Keita Bates-Diop and C.J. Jackson each added 14 points in the victory.

Over the years Penn State has played the Buckeyes tough in State College, with Ohio State posting just a 13-8 record on the Nittany Lions’ home floor. Last year the Buckeyes needed a bucket from Jae’Sean Tate late in the game to secure a 71-70 win over Penn State. Three of the last four meetings between the schools in State College have been decided by 10 points or less. The last Ohio State loss on the road to Penn State came in 2014, with the Nittany Lions beating the Buckeyes 65-63 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

With just a 13-8 record coming into the first matchup between the schools a few weeks ago, it looked like this might be another season where Penn State missed the NCAA Tournament. Beginning with the win over the Buckeyes, Penn State has won five of their last six games, and the only loss during that span coming from Michigan State in East Lansing. After tonight’s game against Ohio State, Penn State still has games against Purdue, Michigan, and Nebraska left, and a positive record in their last four games could be the difference between earning an NCAA Tournament bid, or being on the outside looking in.

In their most recent game, it looked like Penn State might be in for a tough fight against Illinois after 20 minutes, with the Nittany Lions heading into the halftime break with just a 37-36 lead over the Fighting Illini in Champaign. Penn State put the clamps on Illinois defensively in the second half, holding Brad Underwood’s young squad to just 16 points in the final 20 minutes, giving the Nittany Lions a 74-52 win. All five Penn State starters scored in double figures, with Shep Garner recording a team-high 16 points in the victory.

As if Ohio State didn’t have their hands full trying to deal with Patrick Chambers’ upstart Penn State squad that is hungry for the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid since 2011, but the Buckeyes will also have to deal with a raucous crowd. Penn State is trying to organize a “whiteout” for tonight’s game, so there is no doubt the Nittany Lion faithful will be even more vocal than normal as they try to power their team to a second upset of Ohio State this season.

Numbers to know

30.5

Keita Bates-Diop is currently second in the country with a 30.5 PAR (points + assists + rebounds). The only Division I player who has a higher PAR is Oklahoma’s Trae Young, who is averaging a 42.4 PAR. Bates-Diop’s PAR is currently the third-highest in Ohio State school history. Evan Turner averaged a 35.5 PAR during the 2009-10 season, while Michael Redd averaged a 31.4 PAR during the 1997-98 season.

10

With their 18-point win over Iowa on Saturday, Ohio State secured their eight Big Ten win of 10 points or more this year. Prior to this season, Ohio State has just eight Big Ten victories of 10 points of more in their previous 40 conference games. Overall, Ohio State has 15 wins of 10 points or more this season.

78.6

Penn State’s three-point shooting against Ohio State in the last meeting between the school was incredible. Not only did the Nittany Lions drain their first five three-pointers of the game, but they only missed three of the 14 three-pointers they attempted in the game. The 78.6% the Nittany Lions shot from behind the arc was a single-game record for Penn State, and is the second-highest in Division I this year, only trailing the 80% Evansville shot against Bowling Green in early December.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior continues to move his way up the Ohio State all-time scoring list, and is knocking on the door of the Top-20. Tate currently has 1,436 career points, which is tied with Paul Ebert for 23rd in school history. The Pickerington native is six points away from passing Bill Hosket for 22nd and 19 points away from passing David Lighty for 21st. Tate recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds in January’s loss to Penn State, giving him his third double-double this year.

Kam Williams

After missing the last three games to suspension, it was announced yesterday that Kam Williams would be eligible to return for tonight’s game. The return of Williams will give a veteran presence to an Ohio State team that has been asking more of Andre Wesson, Musa Jallow, and Kyle Young in Williams’ absence. The senior is getting close to becoming the 56th Buckeye to record 1,000 points in his career, as he is currently sitting at 972 career points.

Penn State

Tony Carr

While Keita Bates-Diop is sitting on top of the Big Ten in scoring, Tony Carr isn’t sitting far behind the Ohio State junior, as the Penn State guard is averaging 19.2 points per game this year. Carr was outstanding in the first meeting this year between the school, finishing with 28 points and the game-winning three-pointer as time expired. In Penn State’s last game, Carr scored 15 points, dished out six assists, and pulled down six rebounds in the win over Illinois.

Mike Watkins

The battle on the block between Watkins and Kaleb Wesson should be fun to watch tonight. The Penn State sophomore is averaging nearly a double-double this year, with 12.9 points per game, and 9.5 rebounds per game. Watkins has recorded 12 double-doubles this year, with seven of those coming in conference games. Watkins has pulled down at least 15 rebounds in four Big Ten games this year, with his season-high coming against Rutgers, when he grabbed 19 rebounds.

Can the Buckeyes get the No. 2 pro-style QB in the 2019 recruiting cycle?

Wednesday was a good day for the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff. Most of the key coaches on staff received pay bumps—with Greg Schiano and Ryan Day entering the land of $1 million salaries.

Even though it was Valentine’s Day, the recruiting world didn’t stop to smell the roses. A recruit that Schiano and Day have been chasing will make his college decision known before the start of the upcoming season, and an OSU commit got an offer from Penn State.

But the biggest piece of news was the one that broke late on Tuesday night—and the college football world felt the reverberations of it by Wednesday morning.

A familiar story

In early May 2016, Tate Martell was committed to Texas A&M before decommitting from the program in the middle of the night. While Martell eventually went to Ohio State, his story might be repeating again—but with a different main character.

On Wednesday’s edition of our recruiting roundup, Patrick Mayhorn wrote about Grant Gunnell (Houston, TX / St. Pius X) getting an offer from the Buckeyes. The 2019 QB was an Aggies commit when he made the OSU offer announcement on Twitter just after midday Monday. But by Tuesday night, he decided that he may have committed too early to the program—one that he’s had since June 2017.

Thank you for everything Aggieland. pic.twitter.com/BDafr4rPer

— Grant Gunnell (@grantgunnell7) February 14, 2018

As things stand, Grunnell is a four-star prospect, and is the No. 2 pro-style QB in the 2019 class. Over 30 offers have made it to his inbox, with Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and Notre Dame listed as some of the schools that want the Houston native.

On the 247sports crystal ball, the Aggies were the leader in the clubhouse with 67 percent (10 of 15) of the predictions. But, behind A&M were the LSU Tigers with two predictions. Even more interesting, the latest prediction, which came in on Feb. 13, has Gunnell staying in Big 12 country and playing football at another OSU—this one being Oklahoma State.

Things are still shaping up in Gunnell’s recruitment, but with the recent history of a the Buckeyes snagging a blue-chip Aggie QB commit, one can only wonder how this thing will conclude.

Where is he going?

While there isn’t a date, three-star safety Tyler Rudolph (Waterbury, CT / St. Thomas More) let the world know via Twitter that he will be committed to a school by the start of the season.

I’ll be committed by the start of the season

— TR (@Tylerrudolph01) February 15, 2018

The Buckeyes made an offer to Rudolph back on Feb. 2, but according to the 247sports crystal ball, all nine of the predictions for the No. 37 safety in the 2019 class have him suiting up for James Franklin’s Penn State Nittany Lions program.

According to his profile page on 247sports, Schiano and Day were the key recruiters for him. Being a kid from the Northeast, it’s only natural that a portion of the schools that sent offers come from that part of the country. Connecticut, Boston College, Rutgers and Pittsburgh are just some of the schools from that region that have made offers to him; additionally, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Michigan are in the hunt, too.

Speaking of Penn State

With things shaping up for PSU to snag Rudolph, they are also throwing their hat into the ring for an OSU commit.

Doug Nester (Huntington, WV / Spring Valley) is a four-star offensive tackle that’s been committed to the Buckeyes since August 2017. However, that didn’t stop the Nittany Lions from making an offer to the 2019 prospect.

Honored to announce that I have received an offer from Penn State University #WeAre ⚪pic.twitter.com/MgyBz6KxU1

— Doug Nester (@Freshie74) February 14, 2018

Nester is currently ranked as the No. 51 prospect and No. 8 OT in his class. Over 15 schools have made offers, with Alabama and Florida being just two of the marquee SEC programs that have reached out.

We’ll keep you posted if anything happens with Nester on the recruiting trail.
