A big time Buckeye target will suit up in the event next year.

Did you miss all the Ohio State Buckeyes recruiting news over the weekend by cleaning the house or sleeping? Don’t worry as Land-Grant Holy Land has your back.

Kick back and get caught up with some of the latest news involving the Buckeyes recruiting efforts:

Ohio State target picked for Under Armour game

Just a week after making it back to the Ohio State campus for an unofficial visit, four-star Cincinnati Anderson offensive guard Zeke Correll was in Cleveland to participate in the Under Armour camp on Sunday afternoon.

A big time prospect on and off the field, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound Correll was selected alongside Akron Archbishop Hoban offensive guard and current University of Michigan verbal commit Nolan Rumler to suit up in the 2019 Under Armour All-America Game next January.

Congrats to Nolan Rumler and Zeke Correll for earning the Golden Ticket and a spot in the @UAFootball All-America Game! #UAALLAMERICA #IWILL pic.twitter.com/zrCatNQu9B

— All-America Game (@AllAmericaGame) February 18, 2018

WOW! I had an AMAZING time competing and dominating today at the @AllAmericaGame UA Camp! I am extremely honored to receive an invite to the Under Armour All America Game in Orlando!!! #IWILL @steamboat_70 pic.twitter.com/nGL4F88tvy

— Zeke Correll (@zekecorrell) February 18, 2018

Thought as an Ohio State lean by some in the recruiting scene, Correll will have a tough college decision ahead of him. With over 20 scholarship offers on the table at the moment, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Michigan State, and Penn State are just some of the schools that would down right love to keep Zeke from calling Columbus his future stomping grounds.

When it comes to national rankings, Correll is pegged as the 10th offensive guard, and 282nd overall recruit in the class of 2019, according to the latest 247Sports Composite.

2019 OL talks recent OSU visit

Last weekend Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff played host to a number of the top prospects in the classes of 2019 and 2020.

One of the recruits to make his way to Columbus to spend time with the Buckeyes was three-star Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller offensive guard Zach Carpenter.

“My trip went really well.” The 2019 standout stated to Land-Grant Holy Land.

Of the things Carpenter had the chance to do while at Ohio State, having time to chat it up with Buckeyes offensive line coach Greg Studrawa definitely stood-out to Zach.

Thanks to @CoachStudOL and the staff at Ohio State for a great time today! #OhioState #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/4CHY3rYisI

— Zach Carpenter (@CZach23) February 10, 2018

“I have been to campus a few times over my sophomore and junior years, but I had not had the opportunity to spend time with Coach Stud until this past weekend. He texted me after the visit and said it would be great to have me up for spring practice. Overall things went well and it was a good visit.”

Although the Buckeye have yet to send out a scholarship to the 6-foot-5, 310-pound junior, Carpenter has locked in over a dozen offers from programs all around the country. Still weighing his college options out, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Pittsburgh, UCLA, Virginia and West Virginia are among the schools currently trying to add the lineman to their future roster.

Quick Hits

  • Three-star 2019 cornerback Joey Porter Jr., the son of former NFL standout Joey Porter, tells Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports that an offer from Ohio State would be a “game changer” in his recruitment. The Pennsylvania native holds offers from Pittsburgh, West Virginia, and many others.
  • Another top notch class of 2019 prospect has OSU among the programs sticking out for his pledge. According to Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts, Ohio State and Michigan are high up on the list of three-star inside linebacker Marcel Lewis of Chippewa Valley (MI).
  • 2020 Cincinnati Princeton outside linebacker Jaheim Thomas will visit the Ohio State University campus today. Rutgers, Bowling Green and Toledo have reportedly offered the 6-foot-4, 200-pound sophomore so far during the process.

Jea’Sean Tate led the way, and passed an all-time great in the process.

For the first time since late November, the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (22-7, 13-3) lost their second-straight game. Following the blowout defeat at the hands of the Penn State Nittany Lions on Thursday, the Buckeyes fell on the road to the No. 22 Michigan Wolverines (22-7, 11-5), 74-62, on the Maize and Blue’s Senior Day.

Before the game started, the Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy reported that OSU’s freshman big man Kaleb Wesson entered the gym in a walking boot. However, the former Mr. Ohio Basketball started the game, and looked no worse for ware on the floor.

Early on, both teams struggled to get their offenses going. Michigan came into the game leading the Big Ten, and ranking in the top-10 nationally, in points allowed per game. The team does it by minimizing opponents’ possessions and forcing turnovers. Heading into the first media timeout, the Bucks had already turned it over four times. At the under-16 break, the score was tied at eight.

Coming out of the break, Chris Holtmann mixed up the lineup with Kyle Young and Kam Williams getting on the floor. While the action was still a bit sloppy, it seemed to increase the intensity; highlighted by a scrum brought on by Michigan’s Moritz Wagner, that resulted in the third tie-up of the game.

This type of tough-nose game played to the strengths of Jae’Sean Tate, who had four points and four rebounds in the game’s first 12 minutes. Kaleb Wesson also seemed to be 100% as he was strong down low, picking up five points in the same time period.

The Wolverines started the game missing their first five three-point attempts, but Jordan Poole and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman both hit triples in the second half of the first 20 minutes, then Poole hit another step-back three, and was fouled in the act by former Michigan Man Andrew Dakich. Poole completed the four-point play to give the Wolverines their largest lead of the the game at 24-18.

As has been the case with many of the games in the past month, Big Ten Player of the Year front-runner Keita Bates-Diop opened the game fairly slowly, connecting on only one of his first six attempts from the field.

However, Tate put back a Young miss to end a Michigan 9-0 run, cutting the lead to 26-20 with just under 5:00 remaining before halftime. Bates-Diop drew a foul on a fancy up-and-under, but only made one of the two free-throws; making him 1-4 so far on the day from the stripe.

Despite his struggles, KBD was able to hit a well-guarded three-pointer with just seconds remaining in the half to cut the home-team’s lead to 33-28 heading into intermission. The triple got Bates-Diop to eight points, tied with Tate for the most for a Buckeye in the half. Tate also led all players with eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

Poole, who came off of the bench for Michigan, led all scorers with 12, having gone 3-4 from beyond the arc. The first half saw eight lead-changes and four ties, but it was the Wolverines that seemed to have the advantage through most of the first 20 minutes.

Both teams were shooting reasonably well— OSU was 11-27 (40.7%) and UM was 12-29 (41.4%)—, but the turnover battle was heavily slanted towards the Maize and Blue in the first half. While they had turned it over four times— though none in the last nine minutes of the half—, the Buckeyes had coughed it up nine times, leading directly to 13 points for Michigan.

With 18:29 left in the game, Tate picked up his ninth rebound of the game, moving him to 729 career rebounds, one better the the legendary Hall-of-Famer John Havlicek, for 10th all-time in Ohio State history.

After another scrum-turned-tie-up, Tate barreled through two defenders en route to an old-fashioned three-point play, cutting the Michigan lead to 36-34. The and-1 gave OSU a mini 6-0 run.

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) February 18, 2018

Still a six point Michigan advantage, 47-41, at the under-12 second half timeout, Wagner picked up his third personal foul, sending him to the bench. However, his back-up, Jon Teske, played well in his stead.

Bates-Diop’s first-half struggles continued, as he was 2-11 from the floor eight minutes into the second half. After getting a breather, KBD returned to the floor with OSU down 55-48, and after getting a reprieve from an over-turned out-of-bounds call, Bates-Diop hit a three-pointer, his first points of the second half.

From there, continued sloppy play by the Buckeyes allowed Michigan to extend the lead to 60-52 following another Poole triple. In addition to turnovers, missed free-throws were a major factor in the Buckeyes’ deficit. With 5:00 left in the game, they had hit only nine of their 17 attempts (52.9%).

Ohio State missed 10-straight attempts from the field, and went more than five minutes without a bucket since Bates-Diop’s three. In that time, the Wolverines extended their lead to nine, 62-53.

Back-to-back possessions for the Wolverines put the game out of reach. Abdur-Rahkman hit another three-pointer, and then after a KBD missed three attempt, Wagner got a cherry-picking and-1 to put Michigan up 68-55.

Ultimately, the tale of this game was told in two stats. Michigan held an 11-point advantage in points off turnovers, and the Buckeyes shot a miserable 47.4 percent (9-19) from the free-throw line, despite averaging 73.9 percent on the season.

The other stat that stands out is that despite the fact that Bates-Diop finished with 17 points, he was just 5-17 from the field and 4-8 from the line. For the Buckeyes to reach the heights that they seemed destined for just a week ago, KBD will need to come back rejuvenated in the last week of the regular season.

Tate finished with a Herculean 20 points and 15 rebounds. The two were the only Buckeyes in double-figured. Conversely, four Wolverines eclipsed 10 points, Abdur-Rahkman (17), Poole (15), Zavier Simpson (13), and Wagner (12).

The Ohio State Buckeyes will return to the Value City Arena for their final home game of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 20, as they take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The game will tip at 7:00 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

The Buckeyes look to bounce back from their loss Thursday as they head to Ann Arbor this afternoon.

Ohio State’s comeback win over Michigan back in December was unexpected at the time. It was the second conference game for the Buckeyes in a season full of scheduling quirks, and few had any gauge of how good Chris Holtmann’s squad actually was in his first year at the helm. It seemed like it was probably a fluke, and the 2-0 conference record that the Buckeyes carried for the rest of the month seemed likely to fall once Big Ten play started in earnest.

As it turns out, the win over Michigan in Columbus was not a fluke at all, but an indication of how good the Buckeyes truly would be this season. Now, eighth-ranked Ohio State looks to continue to improve its stellar conference record as it heads to Ann Arbor for its second matchup against the No. 22 Wolverines this season.

Despite the strong season up to this point, the Buckeyes seemed to fall apart in their most recent contest at Penn State on Thursday. The Nittany Lions doubled up on Ohio State in the second half and, despite a comeback that drew the Buckeyes within 16, Penn State ultimately pulled out a 79-56 win at home. Junior point guard C.J. Jackson led Ohio State in scoring with 13 points, while junior forward Keita Bates-Diop had 10 points and five rebounds. With the loss, the Buckeyes fell to 22-6 on the season, including 13-2 in conference play. Despite being tied with Michigan State atop the conference standings, Ohio State holds the tiebreaker over the Spartans after defeating them in Columbus in January and would have the edge in seeding in the conference tournament.

Michigan, meanwhile, is sitting at 21-7 on the year with a 10-5 conference record. The Wolverines are fifth in the conference standings, just behind a surprising Nebraska squad, with losses to Purdue (two), Northwestern, Nebraska and Ohio State. The Wolverines are winners of two straight, with their most recent victory coming Wednesday night over Iowa 74-59 in Ann Arbor. Senior guard Duncan Robinson led Michigan with 18 points on the night.

Michigan will be celebrating senior day during its last home game of the season this afternoon. Their remaining schedule includes road games at Penn State and Maryland next week prior to the Big Ten Tournament.

Jim Beilein is in his 11th season as head coach at Michigan, and has an overall record of 236-142 with a 109-87 conference mark. He has taken the Wolverines to the NCAA Tournament seven times, and is expected to make it eight this season. With their most recent win in December, Ohio State leads the all-time series with Michigan 97-76.

Numbers to know

13.3%

The Buckeyes’ three-point field goal percentage Thursday. Ohio State missed its first eight shots from three-point range against Penn State, and connected on just two the entire night. In his first game back after a three-game suspension, senior guard Kam Williams, who had previously led the Buckeyes in threes this season, missed all three of his shots from range. Comparatively, they allowed the Nittany Lions to shoot 45 percent from behind the arc. Both are a far cry from Ohio State’s average for the season. The Buckeyes, while not a prolific three-point shooting team, have connected on 35 percent of their shots from range this season, while allowing about the same from opponents. Though Michigan is not as strong from three-point range as Penn State, the Wolverines are still hitting greater than 36 percent from three.

63.5

How many points per game Michigan has allowed opponents this season on average. That’s best in the Big Ten and 10th nationally. Coincidentally, they’ve managed this mark despite poor field goal defense. The Wolverines allow opponents to shoot 44 percent from the floor and 35 percent from three. However, Michigan has had success in extending possessions, with the Wolverines averaging just 67 possessions per game, but getting nearly 1.1 points per on offense. By limiting the number of possessions, and being more efficient than their opponents on each one, the Wolverines have kept games tight and low-scoring. In fact, the Wolverines have won two games this year without scoring 60 points. Ohio State’s offense sputtered against Penn State, hitting its lowest point total of the season with 56. They will need to be far more efficient this afternoon against the Wolverines.

9

How many days the Buckeyes have to play their final four regular season games before the Big Ten Tournament begins. Ohio State opened the stretch on the road with Penn State Thursday before heading to Ann Arbor for this afternoon’s matchup. In two days, they are scheduled to return to Columbus to face Rutgers in their final home game of the season. Then, in the regular season finale three days later, Ohio State heads to Bloomington to face Indiana for the second time this season. The conference as a whole faced a condensed schedule this season in order to accommodate the Big Ten Tournament’s earlier start date. The tournament is scheduled a week earlier than normal due to its location at Madison Square Garden, and the fact that the Big East Tournament is taking place the following week at the same venue. The good news for Ohio State is that they will have a longer rest period between the end of the Big Ten Tournament and the start of the NCAA Tournament. The bad news is that there is a limit to how well a tired team can play to have a strong showing in the conference tournament.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The redshirt junior forward had one of his worst games of the season against Penn State, but unlike in previous poor performances, no one else on the team was able to pick up the slack. Bates-Diop is averaging 19.6 points per game--now tied atop the Big Ten standings with Penn State’s Tony Carr after the latter’s 30-point performance on Thursday. However, Michigan is not discounting the Buckeyes’ leading scorer heading into this matchup.

“If Keita Bates-Diop had been (healthy) last year they’d have probably made the NCAA Tournament and been very good,” said Beilein.

While Thad Matta’s squad had some serious issues in his final season as head coach, there is a kernel of truth in Beilein’s words. Bates-Diop was a strong performer in his sophomore season, averaging double figures in scoring before sitting out most of his true junior season last year. In the few games he did play last season, Bates-Diop injected an offensive surge to a lackluster team. Now, he seems to be reaching his full potential, but he will need more performances like he had against Purdue, and less of what Thursday night had to offer.

C.J. Jackson

On a night when no one seemed able to find any sort of consistency on offense, only Jackson had any semblance of offensive firepower. Jackson had 13 points on 45.5 percent shooting. He’s been averaging 12.5 points per game this season, and leads the team with 4.1 assists per game. While turnovers were an issue for Jackson early on this season, he has cleaned it up in the last couple of weeks. He had two against Purdue and one each against Iowa and Penn State. Against a team like Michigan which limits possessions, Ohio State cannot afford to cough up the ball without getting to the basket. However, Jackson would be an advantage on the free throw line in a low-scoring affair. Along with Bates-Diop, Jackson is shooting greater than 80 percent from the stripe, and a tightly-contested game could come down to free throws.

Michigan

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman

The shooting guard is one of four seniors who will be recognized on senior day this afternoon at the Crisler Center. Abdur-Rahkman is the only member of the 2014 recruiting class who is still with the program. He has exceeded most expectations in his time in Ann Arbor after coming in as a two-star recruit in an otherwise highly-touted class. Instead of warming the bench, he has started three out of four seasons, showing progressive improvement each year. This season, Abdur-Rahkman is averaging 11.7 points per game, good for third on the team, but he has been picking it up over the last few games. Most recently against Iowa, he had 18. And while the senior’s 3.2 assists per game are not the highest on the team, his assist-to-turnover ratio of 6.0 is the best in the nation, and he has recorded just 15 turnovers the entire season.

Moritz Wagner

The power forward from Berlin has started each of the last two seasons in Ann Arbor, but almost left school for the NBA Draft following last season’s Sweet 16 run. His comeback has been good for Michigan, as Wagner is averaging a team-best 14.6 points and 7.3 boards per game. In the last outing against Ohio State, Wagner led his team in scoring with 14 points on the day. This season, Wagner has been the Wolverine’s best shooter, connecting on 53.3 percent of his shots from the field, including nearly 40 percent from three-point range. Unlike an Isaac Haas-type of player, Wagner is able to score both down low and from range. On a team that doesn’t have a lot of big men, Wagner presents a matchup problem for opponents.
