Third time’s a charm? The Buckeyes are hoping so when they face Penn State tonight in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

Ohio State has defied expectations in Chris Holtmann’s first season in charge in Columbus, but the Buckeyes still have work to do. Ohio State enters the Big Ten Tournament as the two-seed, and they’ll try and exercise some demons tonight, as they’ll be facing a Penn State team that handed the Buckeyes two of their three conference losses this year. The winner of tonight’s third Quarterfinal at Madison Square Garden will move on to face the winner of the matchup between Rutgers and Purdue, which will tip-off 30 minutes after Ohio State and Penn State ends.

The Buckeyes were last in action a week ago, earning a thrilling 80-78 double overtime win against Indiana in Bloomington. Ohio State looked like they might be headed to their third loss in four games when Juwan Morgan scored with seven seconds left in double overtime to give the Hoosiers a 78-77, but C.J. Jackson quieted Assembly Hall with a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Ohio State a regular season sweep of Indiana.

Keita Bates-Diop capped off Ohio State’s regular season with another monster performance, scoring 24 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and blocking four shots. On Monday, Bates-Diop was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, becoming the sixth Buckeye to take home those honors, and first since Evan Turner in 2010. Bates-Diop was also named First Team All-Big Ten, an honor that last was earned by D’Angelo Russell in 2015.

Bates-Diop wasn’t the only Buckeye to be honored earlier this week, as Chris Holtmann was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, after posting a 24-7 record in his first year in Columbus. The former Butler coach truly did a remarkable job transforming an Ohio State team that was projected by many to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten this year. Holtmann was named Big South Coach of the Year in 2013 with Gardner-Webb, and last year was Big East Coach of the Year for the work he did with Butler.

Now the Buckeyes will face a Penn State team who was Ohio State’s kryptonite during the regular season. Ohio State and Penn State looked like they might be headed to overtime in their Jan. 25 meeting in Columbus, but Tony Carr’s three-pointer at the buzzer not only gave the Nittany Lions the win, but it also was Ohio State’s first conference loss of the year. Penn State didn’t need any late heroics a few weeks later, dominating the Buckeyes in State College 79-56.

Northwestern gave Penn State a challenge in their Second Round matchup on Thursday night, but the Nittany Lions took the lead for good with just over four minutes to go in the second half. Tony Carr hit six three-pointers in the victory, and scored a team-high 25 points in the win. Josh Reaves added 15 points for the Nittany Lions, while Shep Garner was the third Penn State player in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

The Nittany Lions are likely going to need a deep run in the Big Ten Tournament to get back into consideration for an NCAA Tournament bid. During the season, Penn State won six of seven contests, starting with the win over Ohio State in late January, but a three-game losing streak to close out the regular season could cost the Nittany Lions their first NCAA Tournament bid under head coach Patrick Chambers.

Numbers to know

.667

With a 26-13 all-time record in the Big Ten Tournament, Ohio State has the best all-time winning percentage since the tournament’s inception in 1998. The Buckeyes’ winning percentage would be even higher if their 2002 Big Ten Tournament run, where Ohio State won all three games they played, hadn’t been vacated. Michigan State sits just behind Ohio State, with their 28-15 record, which equates to a .651 winning percentage.

3-0

The Buckeyes have only entered the Big Ten Tournament as the two-seed on one other occasion, but Ohio State made the most of it, winning all three of their games in 2013. Ohio State defeated Nebraska 71-50 in their first game in Chicago, and followed the win over the Cornhuskers up with a 61-58 win over Michigan State, before taking home their last Big Ten Tournament title with a 50-43 win over Wisconsin. Point guard Aaron Craft was named MVP of the tournament.

56

With 15 points in the win over Indiana last week, Kam Williams became the 56th Buckeye to reach 1,000 points in his career. Following a three-game suspension, Williams struggled in his first two games back on the floor, scoring just six total points in losses to Penn State and Michigan. The senior found his scoring touch in the final two games, scoring 12 points against Rutgers, before his output against the Hoosiers. Williams now has 1,006 career points, which places him 55th in school history, and just one point from tying Chris Jent for 54th all-time.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

What more can be said about the sensational redshirt junior? With his 24 points, 14 rebound performance against Indiana, Bates-Diop registered his 12th double-double of the year, with Ohio State posting a 11-1 record in those games. Bates-Diop now sits 38th all-time on Ohio State’s scoring list with 1,195 points. Luke Witte is ahead of Bates-Diop in 37th with 1,211 points, and John Havlicek sits in 36th with 1,223 career points. Bates-Diop scored 25 points in the first meeting with Penn State, but struggled in the second matchup, scoring just 10 points.

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior will look to close out his Ohio State career with deep runs in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. In the win over Indiana, Tate tied a career-high with six assists, while adding 12 points and five rebounds. Earlier this week, Tate was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the coaches, while the media named Tate Big Ten Honorable Mention. The Pickerington native is on the brink of moving into Ohio State’s Top 20 all-time in scoring, sitting 15 points from tying Jerry Francis for 20th all-time.

Penn State

Tony Carr

With a strong close to the regular season, the sophomore moved ahead of Keita Bates-Diop for the Big Ten scoring lead. Carr finished the regular season averaging 19.9 points per game. Including Thursday night’s 25 point performance, Carr has now scored at least 20 points in four of his last five games, with the only game he didn’t hit that marking coming against Purdue, where he finished with 19 points. Carr is a threat from behind the arc, as he hit four three-pointers in each of the two previous meetings with Ohio State this year.

Lamar Stevens

If Mike Watkins isn’t able to play tonight, Penn State is going to need a big game out of the sophomore forward. Stevens struggled in the win over Northwestern last night, hitting just two of his 12 shot attempts. The Buckeyes can’t expect those struggles to last long though, as last night’s performance was just the fourth time since the beginning of December in which Stevens failed to reach double figures in scoring.

The Buckeyes dish out a whopping six offers on Thursday!

We are about to embark on an event that does nothing short of boasting how well Ohio State’s football program not only recruits, but also how well it develops you. The NFL Combine taking place over the course of the next few days will feature 11 invited Ohio State Buckeye players. If you’re wondering, that’s literally an entire offensive or defensive side of the ball in terms of amount of guys that have been asked to take part in the festivities.

A huge recruiting tool to say the least, future college prospects watching this Combine will have the ability to once again see firsthand at what you have in front of you if you select Ohio State and work your tail off while you’re on campus. An obvious asset for the coaching staff, there’s no doubt Meyer will use this Combine to continue pitching why Ohio State is the place to be if you have dreams of an NFL future. As always, it’s safe to say the times for Ohio State football recruiting are incredible. Even a four-star in-state prospect in Ryan Jacoby decided to commit yesterday. As they say, the rich tend to get richer.

For the Buckeyes though, they stay rich.

Stockpiling positions of importance

In the 2018 recruiting cycle, Ohio State landed the top tight end in the country when they were able to sign Jeremy Ruckert. A much needed position for the Buckeyes, the tight end spot has began to increase in need and in production with Kevin Wilson’s expertise being in command of the offense along with Ryan Day. With that desire to add more of a tight end pass-catching presence in the offense, more Jeremy Ruckerts are going to be needed in Columbus to suit up for Ohio State. Fortunately, when you have Wilson’s track record pedigree of coaching elite tight ends, that shouldn’t be too hard to accomplish.

Yesterday may have been another step in that direction.

Via his Twitter account, Luke Deal, a 2019 Greenwood, South Carolina native, announced that his latest scholarship offer came from the likes of Ohio State. A large prospect to say the least, at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Deal is a kid that when he enters the field, you take notice. Add his ability to his size and you have the 19th best tight end prospect in the 2019 class as well as the sixth best player in South Carolina. With double digit offers from schools such as Michigan, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Auburn, and most recently, Ohio State, you can see why Deal has become a priority for a number of top programs.

Blessed to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University ️ #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/pS5zZD2RSk

— Luke Deal (@lukedeal5) March 1, 2018

Obviously, the South Carolina residence has ties to Clemson and there’s no surprise why Clemson is thought to be the clear leader his his recruitment. With Ohio State now entering the race though along with many other top programs, it’s true that a list of schools will be on his mind and not just Clemson. Certainly there’s no love lost in regards to Ohio State and Clemson’s relationship, but if Meyer and the Buckeyes want in on this prep star, they’ll certainly have to battle the Tigers yet again.

Ding Ding, Round 2

Let’s keep with the trend right here at the tight end spot. The Buckeyes kept their momentum going when they made their second tight end position offer of the day when they became the latest to do so for Jackson Lowe. Another giant at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Lowe hails from Cartersville, Ga., where everyone knows football is king. The 14th best at his position and a very high three-star prospect, Lowe is another guy that is thought to be a Clemson lean. Somewhat ironic to see two similar sized tight ends considering the same school, but when you’re in that area, Clemson as well as others will almost always be in the mix.

Blessed to have received an offer from the ⭕️hio State University pic.twitter.com/YaHvkpal7P

— Big Baby (@jacksonlowee) March 2, 2018

Lowe has other offers under his belt as well from Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Auburn, and nearly 20 more, so it’s not off to think that the three-star ranking will most likely change in his favor when the updated rankings come out.

We’ll keep it locked in on Lowe as well, but look for at least the Buckeye staff to insist on him visiting campus before Ohio State becomes a real player for his services.

Safety battle in enemy territory

Newly named co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch will certainly flourish in his new role at Ohio State. Not only helping call the defense, but coaching the safety position as well, Grinch’s success at Washington State was incredible, but with Ohio State talent, he’s almost bound to continue his high level coaching abilities. With the track record the Buckeyes have too in the defensive secondary, players will obviously want to come play for Grinch and Ohio State.

It’s an honor to receive an offer from Ohio State University ⚪@ChadSimmons_ @JohnGarcia_Jr @Yellowhammer247 @sam5k @justamom48XOS @teebridges14 @Marcilyn7 @OSUCoachMeyer pic.twitter.com/OLzGQ8ftvr

— #11Bridges (@TrikwezeB_2) March 1, 2018

Yesterday, Ohio State made it’s way South into non-conference enemy territory when they offered Trikweze Bridges, a Lanett, Ala., native. A four-star prospect, Bridges is the 17th best 2019 safety, according to 247sports, as well as the 11th best player in Alabama for his class. At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Bridges has the frame to certainly be a run-stopping safety, but has the speed to keep up with top-tier receivers. While many would think this is easily an Alabama commit in the making, it’s still important to note that he does hold other offers from the likes of LSU, Florida State, Oregon, and now Ohio State. An impressive résumé nonetheless, Bridges will be one to keep an eye on in the future. The Buckeyes are keyed in already on some top safety’s closer to Columbus, but anything can happen in the recruiting world.

Quick Hits:

  • Three-star cornerback Shyheim Battle (Rocky Mount, North Carolina) was offered by Ohio State. Has current offers from Clemson, Duke, Boston College, and NC State among others.
  • 2019 running back Knowledge McDaniel (Bradenton, Florida) announced via his Twitter account Ohio State was the latest to offer a scholarship. McDaniel holds offers from Ole Miss, Kentucky, South Carolina and Pittsburgh.
  • Tight end prospect Jude Wolfe, (Bellflower, California) was also offered yesterday by the Buckeyes. The three-star 2019 product also has offers from Notre Dame, Alabama, Arizona State, USC, and more—with USC thought to be the clear leader.

The Buckeye made it through three reps on the bench press before his injury.

UPDATE: Albert Breer is reporting that it is a torn pec for the Buckeye, which will be confirmed by an MRI. This should end his time in Indy, but we’ll have to wait and see what kind of recovery time table he’s looking at.

Ohio State C Billy Price is believed to have a torn pec, per sources, and is waiting on an MRI to confirm. It happened on his third rep during the bench press at combine today.

— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) March 2, 2018

Regarded as one of the top offensive line prospects, Ohio State’s Billy Price adds to his draft stock with his experience and success at center as well. The Buckeyes have rotated a lineman to center over the past few seasons, and Price is just the latest three-year guard to make the move and excel at his new position.

Following in the footsteps of Pat Elflein before him, Price not only switched positions on the line, but also won the Rimington Trophy for being the best center in college football. For the first time in Rimington Trophy history, the same program won the award in back-to-back years, thanks to Elflein in 2016 and Price in 2017. Price is just the sixth Buckeye to ever win the award, and was also named Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace offensive lineman of the year, and earned unanimous All-American honors in 2017.

A leader on the field and in the locker room, the two-time captain also finished his collegiate career setting the record for starts (55) and consecutive starts (55) as a Buckeye — surpassing the former record (50) set by Luke Fickell from 1993-96. Price also tied Elflein and Tyquan Lewis for the school record for games played (55), meaning the NFL prospect had never played a game for Ohio State that he didn’t start — which is absolutely incredible.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Freaky strength and explosiveness. Expected to crush the bench press at the Combine. Plays with excellent snap to punch quickness. Lands hands under shoulders and snatches pads gaining control of the man across from him. Core strength and contact balance is a plus. Has redirect power to wipe out gap shooter and recover from early losses. Terrific bend and flexibility in hips unleash his drive blocking power. Works from consistently leveraged position. Generates push against bigger players. Considered highly intelligent by scouting community. Operational in space or in a phone booth. Keeps hands inside the frame in pass pro. Pass sets with wide base and strong anchor. Starting experience as both center and guard. Mean streak will not be an issue.

WEAKNESSES: Has had consistent tape where impatience gets him in trouble. Lunges out to find shade defenders causing him to over-set and lose balance. Early lunging may be a muscle memory concern. Lack of length makes it tough for him to sustain. Could be more static on second level climb so backs can set up his blocks. Can improve re-setting hands against longer defensive tackles. Feet need to follow hands more consistently on redirects rather than leaning. Feet begin to deaden in his mirror allowing athletic rushers to challenge him with counters. Needs to improve footwork to go with his brute force. Can be a challenging personality to deal with according to scouts.
Player schedule

  • Day 1 (Tuesday, Feb. 27): Travel, registration, hospital pre-exam, orientation, interviews
  • Day 2 (Wednesday, Feb. 28): Measurements, medical exams, interviews
  • Day 3 (Thursday, Mar. 1): Psychological testing, NFLPA meeting, media, bench press
  • Day 4 (Friday, Mar. 2): On-field workout and position drills
Measurements

  • Height: 6-3 6/8”
  • Weight: 305 lbs
  • Hand size: 9 6/8”
  • Arm length: 32”
  • Wingspan: 75 2/8”
Workout Results

Price’s first event on Thursday was the bench press, and he didn’t get very far into the workout before seemingly injuring his chest and having to stop after just a couple reps. We’ll see how this affects his media availability and whether he’ll perform any of the other drills this weekend.

Staying sharp between the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments will be a challenge for Ohio State
Brett Ludwiczak

The nearly two-week break will help Ohio State recharge their batteries, but could make them rusty for the Big Dance.

“We definitely can’t take too much time during these breaks because other teams are still playing. We just have to physically stay fit, and mentally [sharp] more important than anything because at this point, we’re in as much shape as we’re going to get in for the season.”

-Ohio State guard C.J. Jackson via Nicholas Piotrowicz, The Toledo Blade

With the Big Ten having to shift their conference tournament to a week earlier than normal— so that they could play at Madison Square Garden— Ohio State will have about two weeks off in between the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. The break could be a gift or a curse for the Buckeyes.

The time off should help an Ohio State team that has struggled with depth all year long, and hopefully give the Buckeyes some fresh legs heading into the NCAA Tournament. The downside of having so much time off is that Ohio State will need to find ways to stay sharp and focused for the Big Dance.

Head coach Chris Holtmann does have a plan on how to handle the conference tournament being earlier than normal. When Holtmann was at Gardner-Webb, they had an early conference tournament, but that squad only went to the CIT and not the NCAA Tournament. Holtmann also picked former Butler head coach Brad Stevens’ brain about how to handle the break, as Stevens coached Butler when they were in the Horizon League, which had a considerable amount of time in between their conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

If Ohio State is able to handle the long break with a deep NCAA Tournament run, it would be the capper on an incredible first season for Holtmann with the Buckeyes. After being projected to finish in the bottom third of the Big Ten, Ohio State defied expectations to head into the Big Ten Tournament as the second seed. Now the Buckeyes will face their biggest challenge, as the pressure will be ramped up to a level that they didn’t see in the regular season.

“The deeper teams this time of the year, they are a little more difficult to prepare for. Hopefully we’ll have some guys step up.”

-Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

There’s no denying that Ohio State didn’t look like the same team in their final four games of the year when they lost to Penn State and Michigan, and needed double overtime to defeat Indiana in the regular season finale. Depth was a concern coming into the season for the Buckeyes, with a number of players from the past few years transferring out of the program. A shorter bench could be the undoing of Ohio State in the Big Ten or NCAA Tournament.

If the Buckeyes have designs on winning this weekend’s Big Ten Tournament, they’ll need to win three games in three days. At least Ohio State has a little experience playing a number of games in a short span, as in November they played three games in four days out in Portland at the PK80 Classic. A lot more will be on the line this weekend in New York City, with the Buckeyes battling to impress the selection committee to earn as high of a seed as possible for the NCAA Tournament in two weeks.

With the attention Keita Bates-Diop will draw, Ohio State is going to need a few players to step up if they want to make a deep run in either of their postseason tourneys. A lot has been asked of Bates-Diop this year, and it looks like the heavy load might be catching up to him. In his last five games, the redshirt junior is averaging just 14.2 points per game, after averaging 21.4 points per game in his first 13 conference games. At least Bates-Diop will have some time off after the Big Ten Tournament to recharge his batteries before heading into the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s kinda difficult cause as much as you want to have a great performance at the Big Ten’s it’s important. But the endgame is the NCAA tournament. So, we can’t dial back our training too much to peak for Big Ten’s because we still have twelve days until NCAA’s start.”

This weekend, Ohio State will get a big test ahead of wrestling’s NCAA Tournament, which will take place in just under two weeks, as they head to East Lansing for the Big Ten Tournament. The conference championship tournament will feature 11 teams ranked inside the top 25. The Buckeyes finished the regular season as the second-ranked squad in the country, but they still have plenty of unfinished business.

While there are plenty of storylines heading into this weekend for the Buckeyes, the biggest one is whether or not Kyle Snyder will get to avenge his lone loss of the season. On Feb. 11th, Snyder lost his first match in three years to Michigan’s Adam Coon. It’s very likely that Snyder and Coon’s paths will cross to determine the Big Ten heavyweight champ.

Aside from Snyder, there are a number of other Buckeyes to keep an eye on. Joey McKenna comes into the Big Ten Tournament as the top seed in the 141-pound class, while Kollin Moore sits atop the 197-pound class. Ohio State has a trio of wrestlers ranked second heading into the tournament, with Luke Pletcher at 133 pounds, Bo Jordan at 174 pounds, and Myles Martin at 184 pounds.

Head coach Tom Ryan believes we haven’t seen the best from his team yet, and this weekend would be the perfect time for his wrestlers to show what they have to offer. Not only would bringing home a conference title be quite the accomplishment against this competition, but it would build plenty of momentum for a potential national title run.

But the Buckeye is also the second-shortest quarterback to compete.

Quarterback hand size is a BIG deal at the NFL Combine, and people make way too much about a quarter-of-an-inch difference between prospects. Regardless, with the players undergoing their measurements on Thursday, Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett can rest a little easier sitting among the top of the class.

Barrett’s hands measured 9 7/8”, good to tie (with UCLA’s Josh Rosen) for third biggest among the quarterbacks competing at the Combine. Sitting in the No. 1 spot was Wyoming’s Josh Allen (10 1/8”) and Nebraska’s Tanner Lee (10”) was second.

Hand size isn’t everything though, and unfortunately, the Buckeye’s other measurements aren’t doing him any favors. An oft-repeated storyline around the NFL Draft is about a quarterback’s height. You would think that the narrative would have been squashed given the success of shorter QBs like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson, but it has not. Barrett should definitely use those two as examples during his interviews with teams, as he measured as the second-shortest passer at the combine -- taller than only Baker Mayfield. (Hey, at least Barrett could best the Sooner one more time.)

What does all this mean? Probably not much, but scouts seem to really care about these things.
