The early advanced stats projections love the Buckeyes next season.

Ohio State, based on the initial preseason advanced stats projections, is in prime position to challenge for another national title in 2018.

The Buckeyes have brought in the second-ranked class two years in a row and should only narrow the gap with Alabama for the most talented overall roster in the country in 2018 (though Georgia’s will be close as well). The talent base is, and has been, there for a title run.

Ohio State ranked No. 1 in the initial preseason S&P+ projections. Let’s break that ranking down:

  1. Recruiting impact. Making up ~25% of the overall projection, recruiting is captured by a two-year recruiting ranking that blends Rivals and 247’s ratings’ total points as well as their per-recruit averages. Ohio State ranks at the top of this list, thanks to insanely high per-recruit averages in each of the last two classes: .9459 and .9429, which were the best in the country in both years.
  2. Returning production. Accounting for a little over 50% of the S&P+ projection, returning production rankings are based not on returning starters, but on the actual on-field production of all returning players, starter or not. For example, although Jeffrey Okudah and Malik Harrison weren’t starters, their significant playing time in 2017 help the defense’s experience despite significant losses at their positions from the listed starters. The Buckeyes typically have low returning production ratings because of their high numbers of early entrants to the NFL. However, this lack of returning production is offset by recruiting at an extremely high level. Returning production seems to matter for defenses more than offenses, and far less for the offensive line than you might think. In fact, the metric with the highest correlation with future S&P+ performance is actually the percentage of returning passes defensed. Ohio State ranks 109th in defensive returning production and 84th in overall returning production... which is a little cause for concern, or at least uncertainty.
  3. Recent history. This is based on S&P+ rankings between the last two-to-five years and accounts for a little under 20% of the final projection. Ohio State ranks second here, with Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson dominating the advanced stats (and playoff championships) over the last five seasons. After those three, there’s a cluster of seven teams that are ranked within the same distance between top-ranked Alabama and Ohio State. Essentially, that means that Alabama’s in a class of its own, while any of those teams ranked between 4th and 10th likely at least challenged for the playoff fairly consistently during that 5-year span.
What does this mean?

Well, the exact mix of the three factors has changed, but this is the first time that Ohio State has been at the top of the initial S&P+ projections in a while. They’ve come close -- ranking behind Alabama last year and in 2015, but now Ohio State’s two-year recruiting (and Alabama’s slump in the 2018 class) likely put them over the edge.

These are obviously just projections, and they’re only the first set of projections, too — they will continue to be updated as rosters change until just before the season starts. But it’s a good sign that this could be the Buckeyes’ best opportunity to secure another championship.

The Buckeyes are one of 10 schools in Marcus Washington’s list.

Things are happening around the Ohio State football and basketball programs. Two days are already in the books for spring football, and the basketball teams (both men’s and women’s) are waiting to find out where they will go in the NCAA Tournament.

With all this going on, recruiting is still happening, too. For football, they made the top-10 list of a 2019 wide receiver, and sent out an offer to a tight end from the same class. On the hardwood, the Buckeyes might be in the mix for a former Arizona Wildcat commit.

A Stacked Top 10

Making the shortlist for a recruit is always a good thing. While you may not get every recruit, you at least know you’re still in the mix if you make their shortlist. On Wednesday afternoon, the Ohio State Buckeyes found out that they were indeed a finalist for ‘19 four-star wideout Marcus Washington. The St. Louis native unveiled his top list of schools via Twitter.

It’s a stacked race for the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder. Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Penn State, USC and Texas are just some of the schools that join OSU in the hunt for the No. 10 WR in the 2019 recruiting cycle.

This looks to be a wide open race, as only one crystal ball prediction has been submitted on 247sports—and that one is cloudy. If location is the biggest factor in the decision, then Missouri, Iowa State and OU may be the early favorites to land the No. 2 wideout in the state of Missouri.

In total, 35 schools made offers to Washington, with the latest offers coming from the Crimson Tide on Jan. 29, and Arkansas coming a handful of days later on Feb. 2. For what it’s worth, the Razorbacks didn’t make the cut for the Trinity Catholic star, but ‘Bama did.

As we get closer to the start of next season—and even into the season—expect the recruitment to really heat up amongst the 10 schools for Washington. Overall, he’s ranked by the 247sports composite as the No. 61 prospect in the class, so expect him to get a lot of attention from those schools. If any updates occur, we’ll have you covered here on Land-Grant Holy Land.

From Tucson to Columbus?

With a figurative smoke cloud over the Arizona basketball program, some recruits who committed to the program are looking elsewhere. One of those former commits is 2018 four-star point guard Brandon Williams.

Williams committed to the Wildcats on June 6, 2017, and signed his National Letter of Intent to Sean Miller’s team on Nov. 8, 2017. However, on March 2, he decided that he wanted to re-evaluate his choice on where to attend college.

DECISION MADE pic.twitter.com/tyiLscqFiG

— Brandon Williams (@TheeBWill) March 2, 2018

In the meantime, Oregon made him an offer on March 4, but it appears that Chris Holtmann’s program in Columbus may be very interested in the Californian.

Ohio State has reached out to former Arizona commit Brandon Williams, per source. Could take visit to OSU.

— Jake (@jakeweingarten) March 7, 2018

If the Buckeyes could land Williams, it would be huge. Currently, Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate are the two main scoring powers for the Scarlet and Gray. Both of them will be gone next season, so someone will need to step up. Williams could be that guy.

Four members are already in OSU’s 2018 recruiting glass, with two of them being classified as guards: Luther Muhammad as a shooting guard, and Duane Washington as a combo guard. A third guard would help give depth to the team, but right now, nothing is set in stone. Williams is ranked as the No. 31 overall prospect in the class, and is the seventh best PG.

The 247sports crystal ball has Oregon as a likely landing spot, with 25 percent of the vote. The other 75 percent belong to Arizona, but those predictions will likely be switched.

An offer not too far away from home

Urban Meyer has made an emphasis on recruiting from within Ohio. However, that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes aren’t stopping at the Ohio border. Wednesday night, four-star tight end Jaheel Billingsley (Chicago / Phillips Academy) announced that he got an offer from the reigning Cotton Bowl champions.

Truly honored and blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/wZt3Ai6Zam

— JahleelBillingsley (@JahleelKnowsss) March 8, 2018

The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder may be ranked as the No. 259 prospect in the 2019 class, but he’s the ninth best TE. Coming up on March 17, he’s expected to take an unofficial visit to the Michigan Wolverines, according to his profile page on 247sports. That shouldn’t be a huge worry, though, as the two predictions that’s been registered in his 247sports crystal ball point to him choosing Ohio State, the school that just made him an offer. Both those predictions were casted on March 7.

It appears that the OSU offer may have had a huge impact on his recruitment. While he already holds 20 offers, it’s a step in the right direction for the Buckeyes to land a TE in the 2019 class.

Holtmann needs to circle the wagons to avoid Big Dance disappointment.

“It’s a lot of reestablishing your habits, your system, the details of how you want to play offensively and defensively. Sunday is going to roll around here quicker than we think, but we’re trying to reestablish our habits. It’s almost like a training camp.”

-Chris Holtmann, via Ryan McGlade, 247Sports

I was one of the people that thought that the nearly week off between the Buckeyes’ final regular season game (a double-overtime win over Indiana) and the Big Ten Tournament would benefit the team, which had been struggling down the stretch in large part due to its lack of bench production throughout the season.

However, for the third time this season, OSU fell to Penn State in their only game in the B1G Tourney, giving the Buckeyes nearly two weeks to regroup before their eventual NCAA Tournament return. The last month of the regular season was a bit of a rollercoaster for the Buckeyes after their nearly flawless January. So, in order for Chris Holtmann’s squad to get back to playing its best basketball, the coach is going to put the team through their paces in preparation for the Big Dance.

While I still subscribe to the idea that the rest should give the Buckeyes fresher legs for the tournament— and that PSU is just an oddly awful matchup for Ohio State— it’s clear that rest isn’t going to be the only thing that the Buckeyes need to maximize their chances for success in the postseason.

When Holtmann got to Columbus, he said that he would be starting work with his new team with the basics, and now it seems like that is where he will return. Without an opponent to prepare for, the Buckeyes will try to reestablish the philosophies and schemes that they want to rely on when they get back into action.

While the numbers don’t look demonstrably different from January to February, there was undeniably a difference in the cohesion that the team played with, especially on defense. The guards will need to be able to find ways to minimize opponents’ three-point opportunities, especially if playing a less-talented, mid-major in the early rounds.

And Big Ten Player of the Year Keita Bates-Diop will have to be able to reassert himself after being less than reliable for large portions of February. If Holtmann can get his team playing the way they were when they went almost undefeated int he first month of the year, they should have a good shot at advancing to the tourney’s second weekend, no matter who they end up paired with.

“[...] expect sophomore Jeffrey Okudah to step up and seize a valuable role. No player received more love from his teammates based on the way he improved toward the end of the 2017 campaign.”

-Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

As Ohio State’s spring football practices kick off this week, obviously all eyes are going to be on who gets what snaps under center and in what order. However, as Ginn points out in his article, there are more players than just Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, and Tate Martell to be focused on.

The cornerbacks will be of special interest this camp, as new coach Taver Johnson looks to replace Denzel Ward. While the Buckeyes will have Damon Arnette and Kendall Sheffield returning after been listed as co-starters opposite Ward last season, a lot of attention has been give to Jeffrey Okudah, because of how well he played on special teams and in reserve duty last year. Former CB coach Kerry Coombs rotated players freely in and out of the secondary during his tenure. So, assuming Johnson does the same, Okudah has the opportunity to at least be the next man up, if not take one of the starting spots outright.

Either way, the entire secondary will be fairly young for the first time in a while. In recent seasons, while players have had to wait their turn to get into the starting lineup, they were experienced, veteran players when they did finally get their opportunities. However, this year, the Buckeyes likely won’t have a single senior in the mix, with a number of sophomores taking important snaps.

They also could get contributions from true freshmen Tyreke Johnson and Sevyn Banks, both of whom have already enrolled at OSU, and are participating in spring practices.

“The top five quarterbacks in this category are well-rounded, highly sought after passers, so it’s easy to assume they can’t move. That isn’t the case. Barrett carried the football often at Ohio State, and is a proficient at reading blocks.”

-Chris Trapasso, CBSSports.com

So, Trapasso wasn’t exactly enamored with the NFL Combine performance of J.T. Barrett. In his article, he ranked the top-six quarterbacks in the following categories; short/intermediate accuracy, processing, pocket movement, decision-making, passing under pressure, deep accuracy, arm strength, mobility, and scheme fits (West Coast, Air Coryell, Spread/RPO).

The only time that the most decorated QB in Ohio State and Big Ten history made any list was in the mobility category, and that was in the sixth spot. Now, I have no illusions that Barrett will end up being a Hall of Fame NFL signal-caller, but I do think that he has a chance to be a solid career-backup who gets a spot start here and there.

Anyone who’s watched him play over the last four years at OSU knows that he isn’t exactly the most physically-gifted athlete to ever play the position; so, him not blowing people away at the combine isn’t much of a shock.

However, there is a winning quality that is unmistakable in his game when you watch the film (despite the obvious issues that show up as well), and I think that leadership and tenacity will likely be what ends up getting him a spot on a team.

If not, he’ll likely be on the coaching staff at OSU, Texas, or Cincinnati sooner rather than later.

STICK TO SPORTS
