Former Ohio State coach Thad Matta reportedly discussing Georgia job, per report

After a year off, Matta could take over a team that went 18-15 this season.

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, the winningest men’s basketball coach in Ohio State history might be resurfacing after a year away from the game. Thad Matta is reportedly close to beginning discussions with the University of Georgia for its recently vacated head coaching position.

Former Ohio State HC Thad Matta is a serious candidate for the vacancy at Georgia, per multiple sources. Discussions between both sides could begin as early as today.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) March 11, 2018

Thad Matta spent 13 seasons as the head coach in Columbus, amassing an impressive 337-123 (.733) record, including one trip to the National Championship Game, two Final Four appearances, and (not for nothing) an NIT Tournament title. It wasn’t until his final season for the Buckeyes that Matta had his only campaign as a head coach in which he recorded fewer than 20 wins. That streak includes a season at Butler and three at Xavier.

Matta has also recently been linked to the head coaching positions at Ole Miss and Pittsburgh.

Mark Fox and Georgia parted ways over the weekend, ending his nine-year run in Athens. Fox went 163-133 (.551) in his time with the Bulldogs, getting bounced in the round of 64 in both of his NCAA Tournament appearances.

According to our friends at Dawg Sports, there are a number of interesting candidates to replace Fox, including Matta, former Indiana coach Tom Creen, Iowa State’s Steve Prohm, and more.

Less than nine months ago, Matta was fired by OSU athletic director Gene Smith, in part, because the recruiting standards that had led Matta to win five Big Ten titles were not being met. While it has rarely ever been said publicly, many assume that this decline in recruiting was due in part to Matta’s well-chronicled back issues.

However, having been able to relax and recuperate for a full season, the still-excitable, 50-year-old Matta could be what UGA needs to kickstart a program that has been an also-ran in the SEC for decades.

If, and when, Matta finds a new program to lead, we wish him the best of luck— except for if they ever face the Buckeyes.

These heather red shirts with white lettering come in unisex sizes small through 3XL (Men should size up; women should size down). And, get this, these shirts are only $25 apiece! I know, right?

The women’s team advanced to their first-ever Frozen Four, while the men’s team is off to the Big Ten Championship Game

There’s a saying: Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.

On Saturday, both the Ohio State Buckeyes women’s and men’s programs weren’t just lucky, they were good, too.

Actually, they were really really good.

The women’s hockey team, which is 24-10-4 on the year, found themselves as one of the eight programs that had a shot at winning the national championship in women’s hockey. On Saturday, in the quarterfinals stage, OSU faced Boston College—and shut them out, 2-0. Junior defenseman Lauren Boyle netted the first goal of the match in the second period, which was also the program’s first-ever goal in the NCAA Tournament.

Redshirt junior goaltender Kassidy Sauvé strung together 38 saves to shutout the Golden Eagles in their own backyard in Chestnut Hill, Mass., leading the Buckeyes into a matchup with No. 1 overall seed Clarkson next weekend in Minneapolis.

Not too long after the women’s team punched their ticket for another hockey game, the men’s program took to the ice, literally, down the road from campus. Their Big Ten Tournament semifinal contest with the Michigan Wolverines took place at Nationwide Arena, the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The men’s program never trailed in the game, but made things dramatic down the stretch. OSU, who came into the game as the No. 6 team in the land, held off the No. 11 Wolverines, 3-2, with the help of a game-winning goal off the stick of Matthew Weis in overtime.

Weis’s winner sends the Scarlet and Gray into the Big Ten Championship Game against No.1-seed Notre Dame next Saturday night in South Bend, Ind.

If you want to expand the hockey-success bubble in Columbus even more, the Blue Jackets are on a roll, too—even though they didn’t play on Saturday. The CBJ are in the midst of a four-game winning streak, and get back on the ice on Monday against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Buckeyes have now dropped two of their last three.

The No. 14 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Towson Saturday, falling 7-6 in their third overtime matchup in their last four games.

The game was a rematch of last year’s Final Four match in the NCAA Tournament, when the No.3-seeded Buckeyes emerged victorious to move on to the finals against Maryland.

For the second-straight game, the Buckeyes fell down early as Towson went up 3-0 in the first quarter. It took more than 13 minutes of play for Ohio State to finally begin chipping away at the Tigers’ lead. Junior attackman Jack Jasinski finally scored an unassisted goal to close the first quarter with the Buckeyes down 3-1.

Senior midfielder John Kelly scored 10 minutes into the second quarter to spark the Ohio State attack. Senior attackman Colin Chell then took advantage of a man-up opportunity, scoring on an assist from freshman midfielder Jackson Reid to tie things at three-all. Then, with 33 seconds left in the half, sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire found the back of the net to give the Buckeyes their first lead of the game heading into the break.

Junior attackman Gale Thorpe scored the lone goal of the third quarter, putting the Buckeyes up two with 15 minutes to play. Unfortunately for Ohio State, Towson finally found their attack again, scoring two goals in 15 seconds early in the quarter after going scoreless for more than two quarters. With the game tied at five-all, Jasinski connected on his second goal of the game to put the Buckeyes up one with 3:31 remaining, but a penalty on Ohio State gave the Tigers a man-up opportunity which they converted to tie things up once again and send the teams to overtime.

Ohio State won the opening faceoff of the four-minute overtime period, but was not able to convert after a more than two-minute possession. A turnover gave the ball back to Towson, and a goal by the Tigers with just seven seconds left sealed the win for the opposition.

Jasinski’s two goals led the Buckeyes in scoring, with five players scoring in all. Senior goalie Matthew Smidt had just three saves on the day, while Towson managed 16. Overall shots were 22-10 in favor of Ohio State, and the Buckeyes had 25 ground balls to Towson’s 20 on the day. The Buckeyes also held an advantage on faceoffs, going 11-for-17 on the afternoon.

Next up, Ohio State heads to Denver to face No. 4 Denver in their toughest test of the year thus far.

The Buckeyes survive the Wolverines at Nationwide Arena—and advance to their first Big Ten title game since 2014.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are one win away from their first Big Ten Tournament title, as they took down No. 11 Michigan, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday night in Nationwide Arena—just down the road from the OSU campus. They’ll take on No. 5 (and Big Ten regular season champion) Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., next weekend.

We’ll get to that one, but before being able to take on the Irish, the Buckeyes had to survive No. 11 and surging Michigan. OSU hadn’t lost to UM once this season coming into this weekend, but the Wolverines had risen to No. 11 in the country and No. 3 in the Big Ten. It wouldn’t be easy even for the No. 6 Buckeyes.

This one would go back and forth from the first period on, with Ohio State never trailing for a second in this one—but never leading by more than one goal either. They’d still outshot Michigan despite never trailing, 35-31, but could never quite break it open.

Michigan came out firing, outshooting the Buckeyes 7-2 at one point in the first, but couldn’t break through Sean Romeo’s brick wall in net. They’d be outshot 33-24 over the rest of the game.

If Romeo’s efforts in net were the one consistency throughout this year, Gordi Myer’s offense was the opposite of that. He was one of the few Buckeyes without a goal all season, despite playing in 34 games coming into tonight.

So naturally, Myer scored the opener in this one.

With the Buckeyes on the powerplay after a Cooper Marody hooking penalty, Myer took a shot from the uncovered point, with a screen in front, and it somehow took a complicated path past Michigan goalie Hayden Lavigne and into the back of the net. Matt Miller and Dakota Joshua had the helpers on the goal at 16:02 of the first.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) March 11, 2018

The second period would also have a single goal scored in it, but if you’ve been reading so far, you know that Ohio State never lead by two goals in this one. So naturally, it was Michigan that scored to tie the game back up at one apiece.

Marody redeemed himself after taking the penalty leading to Myer’s goal and tied the game up at 11:16 of the second. And that’d be all the scoring in the period. Both teams had a powerplay opportunity in the second, but neither could convert. So onto the third tied at one. Not horrifying at all.

But on its fourth powerplay opportunity of the game, Ohio State took their lead back. Dakota Joshua batted the puck out of the air and into the back of the net past Lavigne off a John Wiitala shot. Matt Miller had the secondary assist.

GOAL! Joshua put the Buckeyes up 2-1 with his 14th goal of the season. OSU's second power play of the night. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/lHWYIyScQa

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) March 11, 2018

Michigan would tie it back up at 7:27 though, on a powerplay of their own. Janik Moser was sent off for hooking and Michigan tied it back up just seven seconds into the powerplay, on a second goal by Marody. Not ideal.

And that’d be it for regulation. Ohio State and Michigan going to overtime in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals with the right to face regular season Big Ten champion Notre Dame next weekend. The stakes were not small here.

Ohio State apparently didn’t mind the moment at all as Matthew Weis ended it just 32 seconds into overtime.

Weis got free on a breakout with Tanner Laczynski, as he found an open spot on the left faceoff circle. Tanner sent the pass across the ice and Weis sent the Buckeyes to the conference championship game.

That overtime went about as well as you could’ve possibly hoped. Michigan didn’t lead for a second in this one and that held as overtime ended with Weis’ 12th of the year.

And so we move onto the Big Ten championship game on St. Patrick’s Day at Notre Dame. Boy would it be fun to pull an upset in that one.
