Ohio State makes the cut for a pair of top 2019 prospects

The Buckeyes are still in the mix for two highly sought after recruits.

With it being St. Patrick Day weekend, you might’ve missed out on your Ohio State Buckeyes recruiting fix. Don’t fear, that’s why Land-Grant Holy Land is here.

Sit back and get caught up with some of the latest news from the world of Ohio State recruiting.

2019 OL names leaders

Ohio State already holds a verbal pledge from West Virginia offensive linemen Doug Nester and Ryan Jacoby of Mentor, Ohio—but that doesn’t mean other talented prospects aren’t thinking about blocking for the Buckeyes.

On Friday, four-star offensive tackle John Olmstead took to his Twitter page to drop his current leader list. Cutting things down from around 35 scholarship offers, the 6-foot-6, 290-pound New Jersey native is now considering 10 programs.

Making his new short list of possible destinations for the next level, Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Penn State, Rutgers, and Wisconsin are still options for Olmstead.

I am truly thankful to every school that has offered me a chance to continue my academic and athletic careers. It has been an honor to meet all of the coaches who recruited me. After many conversations with my family and much prayer, I will be considering these ten schools. pic.twitter.com/VWo7qGQvlP

— John Olmstead (@JOHNNYO_72) March 16, 2018

While some believe he’ll end up at Notre Dame when it’s all said and done, John had the following to say on why OSU is still among his options.

“It was awesome when I went out there for the Penn State game,” Olmstead told Rivals. “The atmosphere was crazy. The people are great there. I like coach Stud, and Schiano is a New Jersey guy. They coaches are great people and they’re in contact with me almost every other day. Our relationships are great.”

What’s next? Before the Buckeyes can shock the world and grab Olmstead from the Garden State, the Ohio State coaching staff will need to get him back on campus.

WR trims list

Olmstead wasn’t the only soon-to-be senior to name Ohio State among his top-10 programs.

Also having the Buckeyes as one of the schools sticking out in his recruitment was Mycah Pittman, a four-star wide receiver from Calabasas High School in California.

— mycah pittman '19 (@MycahPittman) March 18, 2018

Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, UCLA and Washington State are still in play for the son of former NFL running back Michael Pittman.

In the same boat as John Olmstead, Ohio State will have to get the 6-foot-0, 195-pound Pittman on campus before things really become serious—although the Buckeyes are looking to build a pipeline out west after recently signing wideout Chris Olave out of Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, Calif.

One of the most sought after playmakers in the country, Pittman is currently considered the ninth wide receiver and the 52nd overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The Buckeyes have now dropped three of their last four.

The 18th-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse team dropped its second-straight game Saturday as the Buckeyes fell to No. 6 Denver by a score of 12-7 in Colorado.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start on their home turf, winning the opening faceoff and scoring just 10 seconds into regulation. Not to be outdone, Ohio State controlled the ensuing faceoff and set up a two-minute offensive possession which ultimately led to a goal from senior midfielder John Kelly, assisted by sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire. Ohio State struck next to take the lead as freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi, assisted by senior midfielder Austin Seiple, capitalized on a Denver turnover. After trading possessions for most of the remainder of the first quarter, the Pioneers tied things up on an unassisted goal from Colin Rutan, but freshman midfielder Jackson Reid found the back of the net with 1:32 remaining in the quarter to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead heading into the second.

Ohio State extended its lead midway through the second on a shot from junior attackman Gale Thorpe, assisted by junior attackman Jack Jasinski. Denver countered, cutting the lead to one with four minutes remaining. Then, in an explosion of offense, Bugliosi scored his second goal of the game while Denver found the back of the net twice in the final two minutes to send the teams to the break tied five-all.

That offensive spurt from the Pioneers spurned a second-half comeback, as Denver scored seven more unanswered goals on a streak that extended through the fourth quarter, taking a 12-5 lead with under six to play in the game. Goals by senior defenseman Freddy Freibott and sophomore attackman Lukas Buckley stemmed the bleeding, but were not enough to comeback on the second-half surge from Denver.

Bugliosi’s pair of goals led the Buckeyes in scoring, with six players scoring in all in the loss. Senior goalie Matthew Smidt, who split time with sophomore Josh Kirson Saturday, had six saves to Denver’s four. The Buckeyes had just 11 shots on goal on the day, while the Pioneers logged 19. Denver held a 28-23 advantage in ground balls on the day, and won 14-of-23 faceoffs.

Next up, the Buckeyes return home to face No. 4 Notre Dame before kicking off their five-game conference slate.

The 2018-2019 Rebuild

This was a discussion started on another board, where the question asked was "reload or rebuild?"

here was my much too long answer:

Who knows? this season some weren't sure we'd even make the NIT and we ended up beating Michigan, MSU, won at Purdue, finishing 15-3 and second in the B1G and then lost in the Round of 32 to a very good Gonzaga team.

that said, just going off what we can figure at the moment and looking at the players and trying to guess what's reasonable to expect from the guys coming back and the guys coming in... I mean, I have to say it's a rebuild.

I like CJ a lot and I think he gets unfairly maligned sometimes by the fanbase because he's not a pure PG. he really showed me something at the end of this game with how he was fighting and then hitting those FTs. no, he's not and will never be a pure PG. but I think he was a good lead guard for us and might be a really good one for us next season as a senior. that said, he has no identifiable/experienced help at the position next season. Dakich was a serviceable back-up and Tate often had games where he had more assists than CJ. I look at Washington and Muhammad's games and, yeah, we didn't have a complete backcourt this season and I don't think we do next season, either, unless Holtmann can get a grad transfer PG who can really play.

I am pretty undecided on Kaleb. I just question how much he can improve on the defensive end. Can he get to that place where he can play adequate D without fouling? He is an asset in terms of some of his skills, I especially like how he can pass out of the post. He's a mediocre rebounder and sometimes a poor finisher down on the block, a lot of it just having to do with his complete lack of athleticism. He's got good hands and some moves, though, so...? I think he really needs to continue working on getting in the best shape he can. I don't think he can become the impact post player we need him to be if he can't move well enough to defend without fouling and/or Holtmann has to keep subbing him out for defensive reasons. He had some good games this season but he was a pretty miserable liability in the Dance.

out of one of Jallow, Young, Andre... you figure at least one of those guys is going to step up and be a strong contributor next season. you hope.

Andre had a major role on this team. people keep questioning Holtmann on that but you do see a lot of the little things from Andre. when he's actually hitting his outside shot it's a whole other dimension for the team, unfortunately that was way too rare. despite not being fleet of foot he is one of our more versatile defenders. he grabs a few boards. he makes hustle plays. he is usually a plus on the plus/minus for the team and I think Holtmann paid attention to that and rewarded him with PT. I think a lot of it was based on D, especially when we were switching on screens, Andre is a piece that is very interchangeable. my concern with Andre is that we might already be at WYSIWYG with him. I don't think so, I think we will continue to see improvements with him in every aspect of his game, but I just don't know if there's enough room in his potential for them to be big enough improvements for him to become a great player for us.

Jallow has the highest potential. great athlete, amazing how he swooped in tonight to force that turnover. early in the season the first few games he started he seemed to have this awareness and was making things happen on both ends of the court and we were all stoked. and then his shot disappeared for like 90% of the rest of the season and he couldn't seem to make any sort of offensive plays or even grab a rebound. you want to believe that Jallow's handles and shooting will improve, or that maybe we will start using him to crash the boards, at least, but until those things happen it's really just a hope based on potential with him.

Young is a guy that really became last schollie off the bench as the season wound down. prospectively, he would be a stretch 4 in college. he had an outside shot in HS. we almost never saw that this season. he wasn't very aggressive about trying to score, but as early as next season that has to change and he has to be effective if he wants to carve out any kind of niche on this team. he is not going to log any more minutes as a post substitute with Ledee coming in, and I have seen nothing to make me think he can be a wing for us, so I think he really needs to claim that stretch 4 role. I am rooting for him but it does kind of feel that he might be in danger of remaining behind Andre and getting passed by Ledee next season as far as the forwards go.

I don't know what to say about Potter. I just don't. He is more athletic and moves better than Kaleb, and yet he's not much better on D. Sometimes he hits a shot or two or slams down a dunk with authority and you're like, "Oh, okay, Micah!" Then he goes 3 or 4 games as a non-factor. Sometimes he doesn't play. I think there is such a huge lack of consistency with him in any fashion that Holtmann probably doesn't feel confident about what to do with him. He will be a junior next season. If he can find that consistency, I think he becomes a major factor. If he doesn't, he probably has a role virtually identical to the one he played this season.

I am not going to go in-depth on the freshmen because I have already shared plenty of opinions on them but who can really say at what level they will contribute in their first college season. That and any grad transfer we could potentially get is probably eating into a freshman's PT first.

I will say, Muhammad is a guy I am very confident in because where our defense started to falter as the season wound down is exactly where a guy like Muhammad will come in, day one, and improve the team. He is an elite perimeter defender and I believe he will start based on that. Even if we get some grad transfer PG good enough to push CJ to off-guard, then I think we play three guards with Muhammad the third. Washington and Ahrens represent investments in our future offense but we might not see much of the returns next season. Ledee will be a nice Swiss Army knife in the frontcourt and could help replace some of the loads of rebounding we're losing between KBD and Tate, but I don't see him being a prolific scorer, and I think scoring is going to be HARD for this team next season.

right now based on the guys we can expect to have, I think our 2-deep looks like this:

PG - CJ Jackson, Duane Washington
SG - Luther Muhammad, Duane Washington
F - Musa Jallow, Justin Ahrens
F - Andre Wesson, Jaedon Ledee
PF - Kaleb Wesson, Micah Potter

Potentially Young beats out Ledee for those forward minutes behind Andre. But Ledee is a high-level rebounder in HS and if that translates at all to college, we might need him more, unless Young is hitting corner 3s for us.

there is also a very real possibility that Ledee becomes a major factor for us in the post for defensive and rebounding reasons. if he plays more minutes there as Kaleb relief or alternate, then that frees up some space for Young's role, too (while taking time from Potter's).

but yeah, I look at that roster and, man alive, I am scurred about the offense. I see a ton of potential for them as a defensive unit but the offensive prospects just look ugly. I know we're gonna be looking at grad transfers but I really think it's not smart to expect a ton out of a grad transfer, especially if they're bumping up from a mid-major. you don't have to look much farther than Anthony Lee, or Jaaron Simmons at UM, or Mark Alstork at Illinois, etc...

Eulogizing the most exciting season of Buckeye basketball in years.

Ohio State’s dream season has ended at the hands of Gonzaga, 90-84. As soon as the NCAA bracket was announced last Sunday, this result was penciled in by almost anyone that thought Ohio State would avoid the upset bid from South Dakota State. Ohio State was the underdog against a team with far more depth, tournament experience, and honestly, talent. That’s nothing new for Ohio State, they’ve been dealing with that all season long.

Is the loss disappointing? Of course it is. If it wasn’t for a terrible start, bricked layups, and some (extremely) rough officiating, Ohio State probably pulls the upset, and continues their dream run. Sadly, that bad start can’t be erased, and despite an incredible effort, the Buckeyes just didn’t have enough to knock off Gonzaga. While the loss is disappointing, and while I certainly spent plenty of time yelling at my TV this season as Ohio State played (a sentiment I’m sure many can relate to), this loss shouldn’t take away at all from what this team accomplished.

Ohio State, as I’m sure you know by now, was projected as the 11th best team in the Big Ten coming into the season. Dead in the water in early June— without a coach, a direction, or an entire recruiting class— as the 2015 recruiting class finished their evacuation with the loss of Jaquan Lyle. On June 9th, former Butler head coach Chris Holtmann was hired as the head coach, and given five months to put together a team. After adding Kyle Young, Musa Jallow, and most importantly (somehow) Andrew Dakich, the Buckeyes were ready to “suffer” through what was an obvious rebuilding year.

The team and coaches had other plans. Despite a slow start, with bad losses to Clemson, North Carolina, and Gonzaga, the Buckeyes started to gel, and flashed their potential in an incredible come-from-behind win against Michigan. As the team continued to tear through the Big Ten, in a run that included an extremely satisfying blowout win over then-N0. 1 Michigan State, both the team, and Keita Bates-Diop began picking up serious national attention, and deservedly so.

As usual, with teams that lack depth, the Buckeyes struggled late in the season, dropping games to Penn State (x3) and Michigan, as they licked their wounds heading into the NCAA tournament. Stop and think about that for a second though. Ohio State, led by the best player in the Big Ten, was headed to the NCAA tournament. After hiring their coach in the middle of June. After playing a former Michigan walk-on significant minutes all season. After all the turmoil, and struggle, Ohio State managed to make the tournament as a five-seed. They managed to be good enough to disappoint with a loss to a really damn good team. That’s an absolute miracle.

Like I said, Ohio State fans have plenty of reason to be upset with this loss. It’s the end to an incredible run, and it was a game that Ohio State would probably win four out of five times. But, Ohio State fans have absolutely no reason to hang their heads after this loss. The players on the team have absolutely nothing to ashamed of.

Ohio State fought to the bitter end, just like they did for the entire season. Down ten with a minute left, they fought, and clawed, and scrapped for anything they could get, and showed absolutely no signs of giving in. Musa Jallow launched himself after a loose ball. Jae’sean Tate played with more intensity than anyone else in the country, just like he has for four years. The entire team gave their full effort, and should be extremely proud of what they accomplished.

The final score wasn’t what they wanted. The final game of this dream season came far too soon. But, this team deserves to be remembered for everything that they did for this program, this university, this fan base, and for the entire state of Ohio. You won’t find a team in the country with more heart than the one from Columbus, and for that, they deserve more love and support than they’ll ever receive.

Keita Bates-Diop is one of the most natural scorers I’ve ever seen don a Buckeye uniform. If this was his last game (as it should be), he lived up to the lofty expectations, just as he did all season long. He was a constant scoring threat, and a calming figure on a team that lived off of chaos.

Kam Williams finally got the hero moment that he deserved in the penultimate game of his Ohio State career. After playing second fiddle to Marc Loving, or D’Angelo Russell, or Keita Bates-Diop for his entire career, Kam single-handedly won the game for Ohio State against South Dakota State, and did so in the only way he knows how: with extremely ill-advised reverse layups, fadeaway threes, and a general disregard of all logic and reason.

Tate fouled out on a terrible call, and deserved the chance to finish his final game as a Buckeye on the court with his teammates. It’s a travesty that he had to watch the end from the bench. If there’s been one bright spot for Ohio State the past four years, it’s been Jae’sean Tate. He’s not flashy, he’s not a freak athlete, he’s not going to ever be an NBA star, but he gave everything he had for four seasons, and he’s as important to his team as any other player in the nation.

Last, but certainly not least, Andrew Dakich. Dakich, the podcast expert and transfer from Michigan, has been an inexplicable fan-favorite for the entire season, and while he’s not Aaron Craft, as announcers wanted him to be, Dakich played just as hard as the rosy-cheeked Buckeye legend all season long, scrapping for steals, rebounds, and converting the ugliest layups I’ve ever seen. I’ve never cheered louder at a sporting even than I did when he drained a three against Michigan to lock up the win. Andrew Dakich will go down in Ohio State history as a legitimate contributor, and that rules.

It’s extremely difficult to put a cap on the eulogy of a season that no one saw coming. The end of this season is as painful as any loss Ohio State has experienced in the last decade, in any sport, and to see this run end is heartbreaking. But, I think I speak for all of Buckeye Nation when I say this: thank you, Keita, Jae’sean, Kam, and Andrew. Thank you to the entire team. You made us all proud to be Buckeye basketball fans. The future is extremely bright in Columbus. Enjoy the ride.
