Ohio State’s 2014 NFL Draft class among some of the NFL’s elite

From a 2x All-Pro linebacker to a Super Bowl winning cornerback, this group of Buckeyes has stood out at the next level.

While not every draft class out of Ohio State goes on to have incredible success, several of the prospects from the 2014 NFL Draft class have gone on to claim All-Pro honors, Super Bowl championships, and some of the league’s top-dollar contracts.

With most of the players drafted that year playing on four-year, rookie deals, the 2017 season was important in figuring out what their next move would be career-wise. One Buckeye became one of the highest paid players at his position, and another went back to the Buckeye state during this year’s free agency shuffle.

Not every player picked in 2014 went on to be among the next generation of All-Pros, but a good number of the Buckeyes who made the transition to the league that year still have a lot of football ahead of them.

*No longer with this team

Top of the class

Andrew Norwell: The best story of this entire draft class is offensive guard Andrew Norwell going undrafted, signing with the Panthers, and then ending up as one of the highest paid players at his position in 2018. The top guard has been a player to watch for a couple seasons, but Carolina decided to use a second-round tender on the Buckeye in 2017 to keep him around at least one more season. When the team failed to tag him ahead of free agency, teams came calling — quickly.

One of many successful offensive linemen out of Ohio State, Norwell hasn’t missed a game since 2015 and was voted a First-Team All-Pro for his standout performance in 2017. Norwell is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and, with a five-year deal worth north of $66.5 million, is laughing at every team that overlooked him back in 2014.

Corey Linsley: Another Buckeye that was expected to hit the free agency market in 2018 was center Corey Linsley, but the Green Bay Packers weren’t about to lose one of their few consistencies on the offensive line. Protecting QB Aaron Rodgers is an important job, and one that the Packers trusted Linsley with, to the tune of $25.5 million over three years.

The Buckeye was an immediate starter for the team in 2014, and earned All-Rookie honors during his first year in the league. With the way that Green Bay likes to draft and retain talent, it seems safe to say that Linsley should have some job security unless he gets bitten by the injury bug over the next couple of years.

Ryan Shazier: The All-Pro linebacker was at the top of his game, playing on the fifth-year option that the Steelers picked up ahead of the 2017 season, and was among the elite at his position in just three years at the next level.

And then, in December 2017, Shazier went in for a tackle against the Bengals and suffered a back injury that left him motionless from the waist down after the play. His recovery from spinal stabilization surgery has been a slow, but successful process. The linebacker continued to be a source of inspiration for his team, and has since regained feeling and movement in his legs, but as of February wasn’t yet walking on his own without some support.

Shazier doesn’t just plan on walking again, he’s said that he intends on playing football again. And while that certainly won’t be in time for the 2018 season, he’ll get a taste of the sideline again during Ohio State’s Spring Game on April 14th, where the legendary Buckeye will act as Honorary Coach (alongside Malcolm Jenkins).

The Buckeye had certainly set the stage for a Hall of Fame career during his first four years in the league; claiming 207 total tackles, 25 defended passes, 14 forced turnovers, and 7.0 sacks. He was having a career-high season before his injury, and earned his second Pro Bowl invite. If anyone can make it back onto the field after a life-changing injury, my money is on Shazier being that guy all day long.

On the cusp of greatness

Bradley Roby: The cornerback out of Ohio State spent the early part of his career playing backup to a very loaded Denver Broncos’ secondary, that included the likes of Aqib Talib and Von Miller. He slowly earned playing time and before you know it, was picking off passes in big moments, just as he had in Columbus. The team decided to utilize the 5th-year option under Roby’s rookie contract, keeping him in Denver through the 2018 season.

Roby hasn’t missed a single game in his four NFL seasons, and among the 64 regular season games that he’s suited up for, was named a starter in 14 of them. So far in his NFL career, Roby has amassed 168 total tackles, 49 passes defended, six interceptions (two pick-6’s), five forced fumbles (one recovered for a TD), and 3.0 sacks -- not to mention, a Super Bowl Championship ring. The 2018 season could end up being Roby’s breakout year, with starter Aqib Talib no longer with the team, the Buckeye has a chance to take over the starting role.

Carlos Hyde: Things have not exactly gone swimmingly for Hyde thus far in the NFL, but if 2017 was any indication, it’ll be just a matter of time before El Guapo is a household name. Despite having lived through three head coaches in his four years in the league, Hyde was able to find some consistency last season under Kyle Shanahan, finishing the year with several career-highs.

The timing for his career-best performance was impeccable, heading into free agency following the 2017 season. Considered one of the top running backs available, Hyde eventually ended up signing a deal bringing him back to the Buckeye State, on a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns. In four years, the former Ohio State star has claimed 655 carries for 2,729 yards, along with 634 receiving yards, for 24 total touchdowns.

Jack Mewhort: Despite a host of injuries throughout his four-year NFL career, Mewhort has been a big part of the Indianapolis Colts’ offensive line, and his absence was felt whenever he was sidelined. The Buckeye was considered a top guard prospect during this year’s free agency, but the Colts ended up getting Mewhort to re-sign with the struggling organization. His one-year deal protects the team from committing to someone who has had the extensive injury history that Mewhort has, but also will allow the OG to demand more money in 2019 if he is able to stay healthy this upcoming season.

Fizzled out

Christian Bryant: Drafted in the final round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the then-St. Louis Rams, Bryant finally saw playing time in his second year in the league, suiting up for nine games that season. He didn’t really stand out in his few opportunities, and was waived just before the 2016 season. The Arizona Cardinals picked him up as a practice squad addition, and spent a short part of the season promoting Bryant to the active roster and then waiving him — on repeat. He spent a small portion of the 2017 offseason signed to the Cleveland Browns, but didn’t end up making an active roster for the remainder of the year — and he still remains unsigned.

Corey “Philly” Brown: The Ohio State receiver didn’t get drafted, but did end up on a Carolina Panthers team that featured QB Cam Newton. Brown spent three years with the Panthers, claiming just over 1,000 receiving yards and seven TDs over those three seasons. He showed hints of potential his rookie season, recording a punt return for a touchdown, but failed to make any real contributions on offense. When Brown became a free agent ahead of the 2017 season, the Panthers chose not to re-sign him, and the Buckeye was instead headed to Buffalo — he didn’t end up making the final roster, and spent last season watching his colleagues from his TV at home.

C.J. Barnett: After falling off the draft boards, Barnett ended up signing with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent. Originally inking a three-year deal, the Buckeye didn’t end up making the final roster and was cut during the preseason. He didn’t seem to find another team willing to develop him, and his short-lived NFL career came to a close.

This is the third in a five-part series, evaluating the draft classes out of Ohio State from 2012-2016, in reverse order.

With the loss, the Buckeyes fall under .500 for the first time this season.

In yet another narrow loss, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team continued its skid, falling 13-10 to No. 5 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 5-6, including 0-2 in Big Ten play.

Things remained close throughout the first half, with the Blue Jays biggest lead coming in the opening minutes as they pulled ahead 2-0. A goal by freshman midfielder Jackson Reid, on a feed from fellow freshman Justin Inacio, narrowed the gap to just one with 10 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Another unassisted goal put the Blue Jays back up two, but the Buckeyes closed the first with two straight scores from sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire, assisted by sophomore defenseman Jeff Henrick, and freshman attackman Colby Smith, assisted by Reid on a man-up opportunity.

With the score tied at three-all entering the second, Johns Hopkins pulled ahead with two goals early in the quarter--including one on a man-up opportunity. Not to be outdone, freshman midfielder Omari DeBerry scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from senior midfielder Austin Seiple. DeBerry then returned the favor, feeding to Reid for Reid’s second goal of the day to send the teams to the break tied five-all.

The Buckeyes stayed close through most of the third. After a Blue Jays goal to open the quarter, Seiple found the back of the net himself for his second goal of the season, assisted by freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi. Johns Hopkins bounced back with a goal on a man-up opportunity before tacking on one more score with 6:58 left in the quarter. Less than a minute later, Leclaire scored unassisted to close Hopkins’ lead to one.

Unfortunately, that was when things fell apart for the Buckeyes, as the Blue Jays scored three unanswered goals on a streak that went into the fourth quarter. The four-goal deficit was the greatest that Ohio State faced all day. Finally, junior attackman Jack Jasinski slowed things down with an unassisted goal to put the Buckeyes back in it with 8:30 remaining in regulation. Another goal by Hopkins extended the lead, but a score from sophomore midfielder Ryan Terefenko and one more from Leclaire pulled the game seemingly within reach with 2:23 remaining. However, the Buckeyes couldn’t find the back of the net again, and one last Blue Jays goal proved to be the nail in the coffin for Ohio State.

Leclaire’s three goals led the Buckeyes, with seven players scoring in all. Johns Hopkins held a 35-30 advantage in overall shots on the day, but the Buckeyes outlasted on faceoffs, winning 19-of-27, and collecting 31 ground balls to the Blue Jays’ 26. Sophomore goalie Josh Kirson had six saves for Ohio State, while Hopkins stopped 11.

Next up, the Buckeyes head back to Columbus for a Saturday match against Michigan.

Also, Buckeye men’s lacrosse looks to bounce back from their 0-1 Big Ten start

“I thought somebody was chasing him with a knife or something,” Johnson said. “Yeah, I heard he was fast, but then I actually went and watched him.”

-Ohio State secondary coach Taver Johnson, via Austin Ward, Land of 10

It’s not really surprising to hear a football player is fast, but the visual you get from Taver Johnson’s quote in Ward’s article is certainly something. So, who is this player with outstanding speed? Cornerback Kendall Sheffield.

The junior spent his offseason competing for the men’s track & field team, and not only had a solid season on the way to a team Big Ten Championship, but also set a new school record for the 60-yard dash, at 6.63 seconds — besting a record that stood for 23 years. Despite training for track being a completely different monster than prepping for football, the dual-effort has already seemed to impress during spring practices, where he’s back in the cornerback room and making receivers pay.

“I definitely think he’s able to show how much of a freak athlete he is with the track times and then coming back and having a really good performance this spring,” fellow cornerback Jeffrey Okudah said, according to Ward’s article. “He’s had about 10 forced fumbles. When the receivers see him coming around, they all brace for impact.”

Sheffield seems like he’s always been a Buckeye, but he didn’t get to Columbus until after a short stint at Alabama and then a stop at the JUCO level. He took a bit to get into a rhythm during the 2017 season — his first as a Buckeye — but he could end up being the next Ohio State DB taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, if this spring is any indication of what he’ll bring to the field this fall.

“After Saturday’s result, the Buckeyes (5-5, 0-1 Big Ten) will look to put an end to their losing streak of four games and must now make their way to Baltimore to confront No. 5 Johns Hopkins (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten).”

-Joe Thompson, The Lantern

Ohio State men’s lacrosse opened Big Ten play last weekend against Penn State, and lost in an astounding 12-4 defeat. The Buckeyes are hoping to have more success Saturday against John’s Hopkins, when the team hits the road for their first Big Ten away game of the year.

After starting the season 5-4 in non-conference play, the Buckeyes need to bounce back quickly if they plan on making a run in the conference or to even get into the postseason. It’ll be a tough matchup for the Buckeyes, but if they are able to best the Blue Jays, the team should have a good amount of confidence and momentum to continue their conference run.

“I think we’ve always matched up well with Hopkins. We’ve always given each other trouble, I’d say,” redshirt senior midfielder John Kelly said, according to Thompson’s article in The Lantern. “I feel good about how we match up with them this year and we’re going to have to sit down and play good defense. We’re going to have to make sure we control the ball on offense, take good opportunities — not just any opportunities we see.”

Kelly also noted that the team would need to play tougher than they had been, and more specifically to give every play their total effort — a tough lesson learned in the eight-goal beating by the Nittany Lions. It certainly won’t be an easy win, but it’s a very important one as Ohio State gets into the meat of their schedule.

Ohio State vs. John’s Hopkins will get underway on Saturday, April 7 at Noon ET on ESPNU.

“Coming off a pair of Big Ten victories last weekend, No. 23/24 Ohio State is back on the road to face Rutgers in a three-game series at the RU Softball Complex...”

-Ohio State Athletics

After spending most of the early part of the season on the road, the Buckeyes are away from home again after claiming their first Big Ten series of the season last weekend against Wisconsin. The softball team has so far struggled in conference play, sitting at 2-4 as they get ready to face Rutgers, but continue to inch up the national rankings with their 21-8 overall record.

Ohio State is 11-1 all-time against Rutgers, and last season in particular really demolished the Scarlet Knights. Not only did the Buckeyes claim all three wins of the series, but each game was also called by run-rule — Ohio State outscored Rutgers, 32-3. (Yikes.) The Scarlet Knights haven’t quite elevated their game that much since last season, and currently hold a 17-16 record (2-2 in Big Ten play), but they did claim their series over Penn State last weekend, 2-1.

On the season, the Scarlet Knights are hitting .256 with 20 home runs and 25 doubles. The lead batter for Rutgers is Rebecca Hall, who currently holds a .385 batting average, along with 45 hits, 32 RBIs, 23 runs and six home runs. By comparison, the Buckeyes have a clear offensive advantage, ranking No. 2 in the Big Ten in home runs (33), No. 3 in earned run average (2.40), and No. 4 in slugging percentage (.446).

The Buckeyes shouldn’t have too much trouble coming out of this weekend’s slate of games 3-0 against the Scarlet Knights, but they’ll face Penn State shortly thereafter (Wednesday, April 11) which could be a bit more challenging.

“It’s not floating,” Schiano said with a smile. “That just kind of sounds like you just walk around. … I can go help whatever position is needed. I’m kind of the roamer. Whatever is needed, I’m kind of the spare.”

-Ohio State DC Greg Schiano, via Austin Ward, Land of 10

Things have been anything but quiet for Greg Schiano since the end of the 2017 season. From taking (then losing) a new head coaching gig, to passing on another shot on an NFL coaching staff, nothing really panned out and — thankfully for the Buckeyes — Schiano is staying in Columbus at least through 2018.

Players have listed a host of different benefits to working with Schiano, be it having a better understanding of what it takes to transition to the NFL, or adopting a better tackling technique. But another perk to Schiano being on staff is his versatility in being able to jump into different position group drills and help where he can.

“There are always repercussions that you don’t see, and the other thing it allows me to do is I get to jump around from meeting room to meeting room. I like to be able to see everything.”

As Ward notes in his article, the former NFL head coach didn’t want to be called a “floater” with the implication being that he’s just wandering around the facility, but rather be known as the “roamer”. Not that the title matters in any capacity, but Schiano being able to fill in certain pieces throughout Ohio State’s defense is one of the reasons that he was so highly coveted following last season — and why he’ll be another hot commodity on the coaching carousel next offseason.

See what the South Carolina native has to say about the Buckeyes, and much more.

Just a few months removed from signing one of the top overall 2018 classes in the country, and well on their way to doing the same in 2019, Urban Meyer and crew are still finding time to keep their eyes on some of the most talented prospects the class of 2020 has to offer.

Playing host to many highly sought after sophomore prospects on campus this spring, one of the recruits to grace the Ohio State Buckeyes with his presence was four-star defensive tackle Alex Huntley.

“The OSU visit was awesome. I saw practice, got to meet some coaches, toured the school, stadium and did the photo shoot. What really stood out was the traditions and history at OSU. It’s really special. Also meeting coach Meyer and coach Johnson was was huge. I really like Coach Johnson and think there’s so much I can learn from him,” said the 6-foot-4, 295-pound standout from Columbia, South Carolina to Land-Grant Holy Land soon after ending his trip to Columbus earlier this week.

Had an amazing time at Ohio State Thanks for an awesome visit @markpantoni @R2X_Rushmen1 @OhioStateFB @OSUCoachMeyer pic.twitter.com/R50gTQfrVD

— Alex Huntley (@alexhuntley_) April 4, 2018

Having a chance to sit down and talk with coach Meyer and Johnson, Huntley walked away from the Ohio State campus highly impressed with what the staff had to say about his potential to be a leader on the defensive front for the Buckeyes.

“Coach Johnson said he likes the havoc I wreak up front and sees me as a 3Tech. He knows so much about defense and I know I would learn a lot and grow tremendously as a player under him. Of course meeting Coach Meyer was incredible. He’s a legend. I’m coming back in the summer for camp and will be able to put some work in with Coach Johnson.”

Currently holding scholarships from the likes of South Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, Georgia State and Michigan, Huntley has yet to earn a chance to suit up for Ohio State, but holds the Buckeyes in very high regards when it comes to his recruitment.

“When I think of Ohio State, I think of tradition, honor and quality,” said Huntley. “They’re a powerhouse. Also now I think about the rivalry with the “team up north”. OSU is definitely up there on my list for sure.”

Ohio State isn’t the only program sticking out for the Hammond School sophomore standout. His hometown Gamecocks, and Bulldogs of Georgia also have Huntley’s attention before he heads out on the camp circuit to impress other top notch schools with his talents.

“South Carolina stands out. Coach Muschamp is great and he and coach Thompson know so much about a strong defense. They’ve really made me feel like if I work hard, I’d have a chance to play early. Georgia is also standing out and I really respect Coach Scott and the Georgia d-line. Georgia is also a camp I will attend this Summer. I’m going to check out a few other schools over the summer.”

Summer camps aren’t the only thing on his mind. While he still has quite a bit of time before he signs on the dotted line, Alex is also starting to give thought into what he’s looking for in program on and off the football field.

“Some of the things that are important to me are the relationships with the coaches and teammates, the facilities and fan base. I’m not sure about a major yet but I’m interested in economics and maybe sports management.”

A stud on the line for Hammond all season long, Huntley, the fourth defensive tackle and 100th overall prospect in the class of 2020, per 247Sports, finished his sophomore campaign for the SkyHawks with over 60 total tackles, and seven quarterback sacks to help pace his squad to an undefeated 12-0 season, and a SCISA Class 3A championship title.

Will Huntley end up lining up for the Buckeyes in the future? Only time will tell, but from the sound of things he should definitely be one class of 2020 prospect all Buckeye fans should keep an eye on going forward.
