The Buckeyes once again opened the week hosting multiple recruits on campus—and one walked away with a scholarship offer.

Ohio State offers blue-chip 2020 TE

The Ohio State Buckeyes football team is gearing up for the biggest week of the Spring season with the annual Scarlet and Grey game set to take place this Saturday. The game will take place Saturday at noon and—just like in years past—a hefty list of recruits are scheduled to attend the game.

However, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff aren’t waiting until Saturday to get recruits on campus. Like seemingly every week this spring, Ohio State has hosted multiple recruits during practices and Monday was no different.

One of the recruits to attend practice yesterday was 2020 tight end recruit Michael Mayer (Alexandria, KY / Covington Catholic) who ended his visit receiving that coveted Ohio State scholarship offer.

Very excited and grateful to say I have received an offer from THE Ohio State University!‼️ ‼️ #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/RrKxOdwIV3

— Michael Mayer (@MMayer1001) April 9, 2018

The four-star TE has received plenty of attention from elite level college football programs already in his recruitment despite only having two seasons of high school football under his belt. Following the Ohio State offer on Monday, Mayer now has 12 scholarship offers from schools like Notre Dame, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Louisville, Michigan, Penn State, Purdue and Cincinnati.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Mayer is viewed as the No. 5 TE in his class by 247Sports and is the No. 226 prospect overall.

Ohio State makes the cut for 4-star ATH

Four-star athlete Ronnie Hickman (Wayne, NJ / DePaul Catholic) holds a reported 19 scholarship offers, but he announced a top group of Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Florida and Virginia Tech via his Twitter account Monday night.

Extremely Blessed and Thankful #TopSix pic.twitter.com/pe1a2C4V4p

— Ronnie Hickman (@asvprocket_) April 10, 2018

Hickman is the No. 13 ATH in the 2019 recruiting class and is the No. 122 overall recruit in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is also the No. 2 recruit from the state of New Jersey.

Standing at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Hickman plays both wide receiver and safety for DePaul Catholic. It is uncertain as to which position Ohio State is looking at him for, given that both Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano are both heavily involved in his recruitment. It is probably safe to assume they are looking at him to play defense.

Hickman last visited Ohio State in February but now that he has narrowed down his list of schools to six, expect him to begin scheduling official visits starting as early as this spring.

Currently, Ohio State hold 100-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions but both Rutgers and Penn State are thought to be gaining ground.

4-star Safety reps Ohio State

Ohio State has made four-star safety prospect Nick Cross (Hyattsville, MD / DeMatha Catholic) a priority this recruiting cycle and it appears the dedication is paying off.

Cross was one of a few prospects with an Ohio State offer to be invited to The Opening Finals after an impressive showing in the New Jersey regional camp on Sunday. But outside of his talent and instincts on the gridiron, what stood out most about his performance was his Ohio State Block “O” gloves.

#GOTOPEN✅ All Glory to God DM✈️Dallas. pic.twitter.com/ovgQmCnpsA

— Nick Cross (@Nick_Cross26) April 9, 2018

The 6-foot-1, 207-pound Cross is viewed as the No. 10 safety by the 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the No. 184 overall prospect in his class. However, if he continues to dominate his competition at national recruiting camps, those numbers could climb even higher.

Luke Stampini of 247Sports, attended the weekend’s event and listed Cross as the ‘alpha dog.’ According to Stampini, Cross recorded an insane 40-yard dash time of under 4.50 seconds and outshined all the other participants in one-on-one’s.

When speaking on Cross’ level of play, Stampini said, ‘‘The movement skills that Cross possesses helps in man coverage and the ability to make plays along the sideline when lining up as a free safety. From start to finish, Cross was the camp’s top overall performer.”

While Ohio State has to like where it stands in his recruitment, they aren’t the lone contender. Cross holds more than 30 offers from programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State

Helping in Ohio State’s efforts to pursue Cross is his relationship with his former teammate and current Buckeye defensive end Chase Young. If Ohio State is able to get Cross to commit, who reportedly wants to come to a decision before the start of his senior season, the DeMatha Catholic pipeline will be one of Ohio State’s strongest.

Need more proof that Cross is having one of the best offseasons in the 2019 recruiting class? He was also offered a chance to partake in this year’s U.S. Army All-American Game.

Speechless! So thankful to say that I have received an invite to the 2019 Adidas All-American Game! #GoArmy pic.twitter.com/jnGjzi7oqa

  • Ohio State four-star quarterback target Sam Howell committed to Florida State over Ohio State and several others late Monday afternoon. Howell visited Ohio State in March with his dad but with the Buckeyes unable to identify a lone QB target in the 2019 class, Florida State was able to sway him. Look for the Buckeyes to zone in on four-star QB Grant Gunnell to close out the 2019 cycle.

No one knows what the cornerback is actually capable of.

“I think it’ll definitely give me confidence. You can go out there and play knowing your body feels good. I’m really interested to see how everything will pan out.”

-Ohio State cornerback Jeffrey Okudah, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

One of five, five-star recruits in the 2017 class at Ohio State, expectations were already high coming in for cornerback Jeffrey Okudah. Somehow, he managed to meet them and raise the bar even further for 2018. As a true freshman, he played in nine games for the Buckeyes, accumulating 17 tackles on the season. While the overall numbers aren’t extraordinary, consider that, by the end of the season, he played more snaps than starter Damon Arnette in the Cotton Bowl.

His breakout game came late in the regular season as Ohio State faced Illinois, when Okudah recorded four tackles in the Buckeyes’ blowout win. In the Cotton Bowl, he added four more solo tackles. Widely regarded as one of the most impressive newcomers on the team, players and coaches alike praised the freshman for his on-field contributions, which were impressive for a freshman who was learning a new system while getting up to speed on the college game.

However, what players and coaches saw last season could be just a fraction of what Okudah is capable of. Somehow, the cornerback managed to play two full seasons of high school football--seasons which earned him his five-star recruiting ranking and status as the nation’s top cornerback--as well as his freshman season in Columbus with a labrum injury. While it was a minor enough injury that Okudah was able to play through it, the Buckeyes decided that offseason surgery was the best option for their future star corner. Come September, Taver Johnson, who replaced Kerry Coombs as cornerbacks coach, plans on rotating a healthy Okudah with Arnette and Kendall Sheffield to keep his secondary fresh.

Though Okudah is sitting out spring practice, the high expectations that he has faced in his year in Columbus continue to increase. Now, however, he will be fully healthy as he takes them on.

“With Mitchell’s incredible three-point range (she shoots 40 percent from the field on nine attempts per game), handles and court awareness, she seems too good to pass up here.”

-Matt Ellentuck and Whitney Medworth, SBNation

With the WNBA Draft scheduled for this Thursday in New York City, all eyes are on the No. 2 overall pick. There is little doubt that the Las Vegas Aces, formerly the San Antonio Stars, will select South Carolina center/forward A’ja Wilson. Standing at 6-foot-5, Wilson will likely join last season’s No. 1 overall selection in Kelsey Plum, who was selected by the Stars in the 2017 draft. However, the drama will come with the second pick, held by the Indiana Fever. Most analysts figured that former Ohio State point guard Chelsea Mitchell was a lock on the spot--that is, until UConn’s Azura Stevens opted to forego her final season of eligibility with the Huskies and enter the draft. The 6-foot-6 forward transferred to UConn from Duke, playing just one season under Geno Auriemma.

Mitchell is still seen by many as the obvious choice. In four seasons in Columbus, she became one of the most highly-decorated Buckeyes in program history. She was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in each of her four years playing, as well as a three-time Big Ten Player of the Year. She holds 17 program records at Ohio State, eight conference records and four NCAA records, including most career three-point field goals (497). As a senior, she led the country in total points scored with 849, and ended her final season ranked second nationally in career points.

From the Fever’s perspective, Mitchell checks a lot of boxes for a team which has a lot of needs this offseason. Indiana traded away Briann January, considered the team’s best player, just a year after Tamika Catchings, who had been the Fever’s leading scorer, retired. Indiana also holds the No. 8 pick in the draft as a result of the January trade, with analysts projecting a selection of forward Monique Billings from UCLA. At forward, Billings could help to give the Fever the best of both worlds if they also nab Mitchell, but the appeal of a former UConn and Duke star certainly boosts the intrigue of how the first round will play out Thursday.

“As for how he fits into Ohio State’s plans moving forward, Walker will likely step in as the starting point guard in 2019-2020 with two years of eligibility remaining.”

-James Grega, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann managed to do a lot with a little in his first season at the helm in Columbus. After a good portion of his roster transferred in the transition surrounding Thad Matta’s departure, Holtmann leveraged a corps of veteran talent, along with a few crucial newcomers, to put together an unexpected NCAA Tournament run. However, Holtmann is steadily building his own recruitment machine that will help to “reload” his team in the future, especially with losses like forwards Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate. Though many of the benefits of this pipeline won’t be seen for years to come, the head coach is setting Ohio State basketball up for long-term success.

One of these pieces is Florida State transfer C.J. Walker, who could ultimately fill the true point guard spot which has been lacking in recent seasons at Ohio State. Walker won’t be eligible until the 2019-2020 season, but he will bring a level of veteran experience to a team which will feature many young players. Moreover, Walker was part of an Elite Eight team this season, and brings knowledge of what it is like to have a run in the NCAA Tournament. Walker, who averaged eight points per game as a sophomore with the Seminoles, has shown improvement in his game from year one to year two. His free throw shooting improved markedly, jumping to 73.2 percent from just 65.5 a year before, and bettered his defense on the other side of the court.

The transfer provides a good start to Holtmann’s 2019 recruiting class. Coincidentally, Walker, a former four-star recruit, was initially wooed by Holtmann while the latter was still at Butler. The incoming 2018 group is currently ranked No. 23 nationally, featuring two four-star recruits. By the time Walker sees the court, just two former Matta players--Andre Wesson and Micah Potter--will still be on the roster, and Walker will play a crucial veteran role on an overall young team.

Oooh, shiny.

Warning, Land-Grant Holy Land is about to become a jewelry blog, because, today, members of the 2017 Ohio State football team got their Big Ten Championship rings. And they are fancy!

☑️ Accountability
☑️ Big Ring

Thanks to @b_price54 for presenting the Buckeyes with their 2017 Big Ten Championship / Cotton Bowl rings -- fulfilling a promise he made to the team on Nov. 4, 2017.#GoBucks #Brotherhood pic.twitter.com/llw1MAeAu2

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 9, 2018

The massive rings feature what appears to be a ruby Block O in the center of a large, sunken face backed by dozens of sparkling diamonds. On the outside are more diamonds framing the center stones with the words “2017 Big Ten Champions” surrounding the vibrant red rock.

In the video above, former Buckeye captain Billy Price told his teammates that the rings were a symbol of their brotherhood, and the accountability that they held each other to throughout the season.

On the year, the Buckeyes went 7-1 in the conference regular season, and advanced to the B1G championship game, where they beat then-No. 4 Wisconsin 27-21 to claim the conference crown.

For last year’s fifth-year seniors, it marked their second Big Ten Championship ring, to go along with their National Championship ring, and five pairs of gold pants for going undefeated against Michigan during their time in Columbus.

It’s always a good day to be an Ohio State Buckeye, but when the bling comes in, it becomes a great day!

The Buckeyes brought a lot of top-level talent to Columbus, including a pair of 5-star talents.

Thanks to some new recruiting rules and calendar changes, recruiting has seen an increase in intensity for the nation’s top targets. Many times, “official visits” were saved for the fall and/or after the prep seasons for top recruits, but now it’s becoming more and more common for prospects to take their official visits sooner. Fortunately, Urban Meyer and his staff are pretty good at this whole recruiting thing, so when this past weekend saw literally a huge prospect visitor list, the impression the Ohio State Buckeyes made was once again second to none.

The never ending success the Buckeyes are seeing each cycle will easily continue if weekends like these continue—and that should be the case.

Hawaii 5(-star)-0

Of the tons of highly touted prospects on campus this weekend, there was one who certainly had the longest trek to Columbus. It also just so happens that this prospect may just be the one, when it’s all said and done, to be the highest rated prospect. Enter Hawaii native Faatui Tuitele and you have a player that literally any and everyone is wanting to add to their 2019 recruiting haul. Tuitele is currently ranked as the No. 2 defensive tackle in the country, the top overall prospect in Hawaii, and not to mention the 24th best player from any position for all of the 2019 cycle. Easily deserving of his five-star ranking, Tuitele was on campus to see the Buckeyes—and did not leave empty handed.

While on his visit, Ohio State was the latest to extend a scholarship offer. With Tuitele’s proximity to Columbus, it wasn’t a guarantee that he would be recruited heavily by the Buckeyes. Of course the talent is more than there, but again, the distance between the two can sometimes create a bit of a barrier. However, with his visit over the weekend, that proves that the mutual interest is more than there.

GOD I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL!! I am very BLESSED and HONORED to announce that I have received an offer from THE Ohio State University! #R2X #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/8lh2nBvAUF

— FAATUI TUITELE (@tuitele87) April 7, 2018

Like many Hawaii natives, Tuitele is also on the USC Trojans’ radar so much in fact that they may be the early leader, but with nearly 40 offers, Faatui will surely do his share of looking around and seeing what school best suits him on and off the field. While it’s still impressive that Tuitele did visit Columbus this weekend, the true test is to see whether or not Ohio State will earn one of his five official visits. If so, then it’s safe to say the Buckeyes have more than just a puncher’s chance at landing yet another elite defensive line prospect from an entirely different region than what they are used to.

Virginia’s finest heads to OSU

Once again, the Buckeyes welcomed a top player from ‘19 to campus and hoped to make more than just a great impression. Virginia native Brandon Smith, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound inside linebacker made the trek to see what Ohio State had to offer.

Smith checks in as the top inside linebacker for the 2019 class as well as the top prospect from Virginia. While we’re at it, Brandon is even in the top 20 in the country regardless of position for the 2019 cycle. With depth at the position always a necessity, Meyer and position coach Billy Davis are really hoping this weekend was a step in the right direction, as many right now currently believe Penn State is the early favorite to land his services. With Florida State and Penn State holding the only 247sports crystal ball prediction votes, the Buckeyes are ready to change that.

Great visit today!! Thank you so much!!@OSUCoachMeyer @CoachBillDavis @OSUCoachSchiano @markpantoni....#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/eobhdaSPFp

— Brandon Smith (@brand0n_smith12) April 6, 2018

The Buckeyes have just as good of a chance as anyone to make up ground, too, because their success in Virginia recruiting has been very, very positive. In many cycles of Meyer’s Ohio State tenure, the staff has gone into the state and poached a top Virginia player, but 2019 would only make Meyer that much happier. If Brandon Smith is reciprocating that interest, the Buckeyes will continue to roll out the red carpet and look to bring Smith back to campus for either an unofficial or official visit. If that does indeed occur, then the Buckeyes are a legitimate contender for this five-star talent.

Two is better than one

In the 2018 recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes were able to head south on more than one occasion, but specifically in this instance to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to poach a top running back in Master Teague, who has since already enrolled and begun his career in the Scarlet and Gray. In 2019, Ohio State may try to double-dip at Blackman High School due to their current class having another highly ranked prospect Ohio State would love to bring north to join former teammate Mater Teague.

OH-IO pic.twitter.com/bHdHE227JW

— Trey Knox Snag Crew CEO (@Fbu1Tk) April 6, 2018

Trey Knox, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound wide receiver was able to visit Ohio State over the weekend and saw exactly why his former teammate chose to be a Buckeye. Knox had a great time on his visit and the Ohio State staff is loving where they sit for the No. 29 receiver in the 2019 class.

As it stands right now, the Buckeyes are thought to be the clear-cut favorite and it may not come as a surprise to many because Knox has made his interest in Ohio State very open. The crystal ball predictions even favor the Buckeyes, and while that is not the only measure of accuracy, the two parties are building on their relationship and the hope to land Trey for 2019’s class is becoming more and more possible as time goes on.

Quick Hits:

The former FSU guard will have to sit for a year, before having two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Ohio State Buckeyes basketball program picked up a commitment on Sunday as former Florida State guard CJ Walker announced via Twitter that he will join Chris Holtmann’s program.

The Indianapolis native was originally recruited by Holtmann during his time at Butler, but after two years in Tallahassee, Walker decided to come back to the midwest after an official visit over the weekend.

The 6-foot-1 guard started 34 games during his sophomore year and averaged eight points, 2.4 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. He shot 41.2 percent from the floor during this most recent season, including 35.5 percent from behind the arc.

Walker will need to sit out the 2018-19 season, but will have two years of eligibility remaining when he is able to take to the court for the Buckeyes. Though he won’t be able to suit up for OSU next season, having an experienced guard on the roster when the current crop of young players begins to come of age has been a huge point of emphasis for Holtmann this offseason.

C.J. Jackson will be the only contributing senior on Ohio State’s roster this coming campaign, and having Walker ready to replace him in the backcourt is a bonus for the Buckeyes.

Despite the commitment, Holtmann and company might not yet be done when it comes to recruiting transfers. With the exodus of nearly all of the team’s 2017-18 leadership, the Buckeyes are still hopeful to find a graduate transfer who can provide some stability beginning this fall.
