Is it gonna be Dobbins? Weber? Williams? McCall?

“Running backs coach Tony Alford said he has enjoyed being in the midst of two 1,000-yard rushers and an upstart vying to be the main man in the fall.”

-Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

In 2016, Mike Weber was the freshman running back that all of Buckeye Nation was salivating over. Then, in 2017, that honor went to J.K. Dobbins, following a Weber injury kept him out early in the season. Then, even after Weber returned healthy, with the Buckeyes blowing out opponents for much of the fall, Antonio Williams had enough opportunities to prove that he was a viable option in the backfield as well.

There is also the case of the disappearance of Demario McCall, who showed tremendous explosion and creativity in 2016, but has become an afterthought due to injuries and a crowded RB room ever since. He is now officially considered either a wide-receiver or an H-back.

So, as Alford surveys his stable of backs as spring practice winds down, he has a ton of top-line options; but the question is, how do you know which option to use when?

“I think it’s just how we feel the flow of the game and how it’s going,” Alford said. As an example, Alford points to how last season’s game against Michigan State played out, with the more elusive Dobbins starting, but the more-physical Weber becoming the primary ball-carrier as the game progressed.

Now look, I am 100% on board with having as many complimentary, NFL-caliber backs on the roster as possible, but over the past few seasons— dating back to at least the bungling of the J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones QB battle— Urban Meyer and his coaching staff have not exactly shown an ability to properly divvy up the snaps for their top players (I’m still salty about how many times Ezekiel Elliott got the ball against MSU in 2015).

So, since neither Dobbins or Weber is likely to blow the other away before the season starts, and completely claim the job as his own, I am a bit concerned about how Alford, Meyer, and the two-headed offensive coordinator monster will spread things out, especially in the season’s biggest games.

I certainly don’t have the answer to what they should do, and I’m not completely sure that there is a correct answer, but this is one area where my confidence in the OSU coaching staff is lower than I would like it to be.

What do you think that OSU should do with the running backs when games begin in September? Let us know in the poll below.

“When Holtmann was hired by Ohio State last June, he talked about “closing borders” when it came to recruiting in state. The previous staff had struggled in recruiting, and specifically struggled recruiting the top talent in Ohio on a regular basis.”

-Bill Landis, cleveland.com

With the commitment of five-star power forward Alonzo Gaffney earlier today— and with all due respect to previous commitments—, Chris Holtmann has landed his first big-time recruit while at Ohio State. According to 247sports, Gaffney is Ohio State’s highest rated commit since D’Angelo Russell in 2014, and Ohio’s best player since Jared Sullinger in 2010.

When Holtmann was hired, athletic director Gene Smith made it very clear that the recent recruiting failures of previous head coach Thad Matta were the reason for the change, and Holtmann vowed to keep the best players in state; and with Gaffney, he’s begun to do that.

When paired with the recent commitment of Florida State transfer, C.J. Walker, the makeup of the 2019-2020 squad is starting to crystallize. Barring any unforeseen transfers or NBA declarations, joining these two recently announced pieces will be Kaleb Wesson, Micah Potter, Kyle Young, and incoming freshman Jaedon LeDee on the post; Andre Wesson, Musa Jallow, and 2018 recruit Justin Ahrens on the wing; and incoming freshmen Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington Jr. in the back court.

With that, Holtmann has two scholarship roster spots open for the 2019 recruiting class, both likely being saved for guards. If this mixture of players will be enough to allow the Buckeyes to compete with the nation’s top teams, is yet to be seen. But, after an abbreviated 2018 recruiting cycle, Buckeye fans should be very happy with how the new head coach has quickly been able to set the program up for an exciting future.

“The Ohio State Department of Athletics held the 51st-annual Scholar-Athlete Dinner Monday... to honor its student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments. At the event, a record 692 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes were recognized and a number of senior awards were given out.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Earlier this week, OSU recognized nearly 700 students that exemplify what it means to be a student-athlete at one of the preeminent public institutions of higher learning in this great country of ours.

Included in this select company are men’s basketball team members Andrew Dakich, Musa Jallow, Joey Lane, Micah Potter, Jae’Sean Tate, Kaleb Wesson, and more. From the women’s hoops team, Karlie Cronin, Asia Doss, Linnae Harper, Stephanie Mavunga, Kelsey Mitchell, and Makayla Waterman were amongst the honorees.

The football team was also represented by the likes of Tuf Borland, Nick Bosa, Baron Browning, Drue Chrisman, Jordan Fuller, Elijaah Goins, Dwayne Haskins, Justin Hilliard, Sam Hubbard, DreMont Jones, Demario McCall, Jeffrey Okudah, C.J. Saunders, and more.

To be deemed an OSU Scholar-Athlete, one must achieve a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA while participating in a varsity sport.

Also at Monday’s event, the university recognized OSU’s Big Ten Medal of Honor finalists; “Irina Andrianova (pistol), Liz Li (swimming), Kelsey Mitchell (basketball), Monica Velazquez-Stiak (synchronized swimming) and Nikki Walts (soccer). For the men, the finalists are Drew Cheezum (rifle), Sean Melton (gymnastics), Kyle Snyder (wrestling), Nicolas Szerszen (volleyball) and Mikael Torpegaard (tennis).”

The winner of the award, which is given “to one male and one female student from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career,” will be announced on April 24.

If you want to support some of the incredible student-athletes in sports that don’t often get as much attention as football and basketball, there are a number of options on campus the rest of this week.

Ohio State has landed their best recruit in years.

To say it was a great day for Ohio State basketball would be a pretty massive understatement. For the first time since 2014, Ohio State has landed a five-star prospect, and for the first time since 2010, that five-star hails from the Buckeye State. Garfield Heights star Alonzo Gaffney is Ohio State’s next star, and another massive win for a coaching staff rapidly picking up Ws.

Gaffney, a 6’9, 190 pound power forward is ranked as the 18th best player in the country for 2019, the third best power forward, and the best player in Ohio, and while the rankings are great, he’s even better than they say. Gaffney is Ohio State’s highest ranked commit since D’Angelo Russell, and when you look at his film, it’s easy to see why.

It’s not bold at all to say that Gaffney will have just as big of an impact as a freshman as star rookies like Russell or Jared Sullinger, in fact, it may be fair to assume that he could be even better. Let’s take a look at why that is, and what he brings to Columbus.

On the court

The first thing that shows up on Gaffney’s film is just how long he is. He’s a legitimate 6-foot-9, and may be closer to 6-foot-10; and, with a wingspan easily longer than 7 feet, he’ll be one of the biggest players in the Big Ten as soon as he steps on campus. Gaffney certainly doesn’t just thrive because of his size however, and he has learned how to use his length as a bonus, rather than as his whole game.

That size is extremely beneficial to him defensively, where he spends entire games terrorizing opponents inside. When he’s on the floor, there are absolutely no easy layups, and while he isn’t a great perimeter defender, he’s as skilled of a shot-blocker as anyone in the class of 2019.

While his defense is solid, if not a bit one-dimensional, his offense is where Gaffney really shines. There’s not a shot past half court that Alonzo doesn’t like, and more often than not, he’ll knock those shots down. He’s great at getting to the hoop because of his solid dribbling and fantastic athleticism, and will almost never struggle to finish at the basket.

Shockingly enough, finishing at the hoop may not even be his best offensive asset by the time he’s done in Columbus. Gaffney has a beautiful shooting stroke from outside, and when he’s shooting with confidence, he’s extremely capable of being a sharpshooter. He’ll have to work through inconsistency issues shooting the ball, as many freshmen do, but when he’s on, he’s just as good at shooting as another former Buckeye wing: Keita Bates-Diop.

Gaffney has said that a big reason for his decision was the job that Chris Holtmann and his staff did in developing KBD, and if Gaffney becomes a more athletic version of the Big Ten Player of the Year, you won’t find an upset Buckeye fan in the country.

On the roster

Gaffney’s presence in 2019 will give Ohio State a ton of flexibility. Barring any unforeseen changes, Ohio State should have CJ Walker, Luther Muhammad, Justin Ahrens, Alonzo Gaffney, Kaleb Wesson, Andre Wesson, Musa Jallow, Kyle Young, Duane Washington, Jaedon Ledee, and Micah Potter all ready to play, along with at least one or two more 2019 recruits.

It’s not hard to envision a team with that much talent contending for a national title, especially if the classes of 2017 and 2018 can develop during the 2018-19 season, which many see as a rebuilding year. If that happens, and the Buckeyes come into the 2019 season fully loaded, the addition of Gaffney allows the coaching staff to deploy numerous situational lineups. Let’s take a look at what those could look like.

Starters: CJ Walker, Luther Muhammad, Musa Jallow, Alonzo Gaffney, Kaleb Wesson

I don’t expect to see Kaleb Wesson and Alonzo Gaffney of the floor together very often. That much size in the front court would be balanced out by a fairly small backcourt, but ultimately, Wesson’s inside the paint, interior-centered game takes away spacing from Gaffney that he needs to get to the hoop. This is probably the most talented lineup, but I don’t expect to see it a ton.

Small Ball: Duane Washington, Musa Jallow, Luther Muhammad, Jaedon LeDee, Alonzo Gaffney

Gaffney and LeDee are good enough interior defenders and and rebounders for this small lineup to work, specifically when Ohio State is looking to spread the floor. Good shooters in the backcourt make for a very dangerous group that could create comebacks.

Defense: Luther Muhammad, Musa Jallow, Andre Wesson, Jaedon LeDee, Alonzo Gaffney

Another smaller lineup, but this group has a ton of athleticism, length, and defensive ability. Three great wing defenders, a dominant inside presence, and a lockdown guard defender in Muhammad makes this a great lineup against dangerous offenses.

Shooting: Duane Washington, Luther Muhammad, Justin Ahrens, Alonzo Gaffney, Micah Potter

All five players on the floor can shoot the ball from outside, and while they may struggle on defense, it’s almost impossible to guard five great shooters like this.

Bully ball: Luther Muhhamad, Andre Wesson, Alonzo Gaffney, Kyle Young, Kaleb Wesson

Not very practical, but against a team without much shooting, but a ton of size (think Kentucky 2017), this lineup can do some serious damage inside. All five players are very capable at getting to the hoop and playing physically, and could serve as a steadying force if the outside shots aren’t falling.

With all of these possibilities, and many more, it’s hard to not be excited about what Ohio State will look like in 2019. No matter what Chris Holtmann and his staff decide to do, now is the time to jump on the Buckeye bandwagon, because it’s about to leave the station.

usa_today_10414706.0.jpg

The Buckeye DT is still young enough to garner a long-term deal. But will he get the kind of money he thinks he deserves?

In 2016, former Ohio State DT Johnathan Hankins was one-half of the NFL’s fiercest interior lineman duos, alongside Damon Harrison. With the New York Giants — the team that drafted Hankins in 2013 — having already opened their wallets to retain Harrison in 2016, the team had to choose between a big-money deal for Jason Pierre-Paul or Hankins. They chose JPP, and Hankins was on his way out in early-2017.

Every year, there are a handful of storylines and players that make up most of the free agency frenzy, and following the 2016 season, Hankins was that guy. A top defensive tackle, and young enough to still garner a big-money, long-term deal, he ended up signing with the Indianapolis Colts on a three-year contract, worth $27 million. Hankins had a decent first season in Indy, notching 44 total tackles and 2.0 sacks in his 15 games played.

The team surprisingly released the Buckeye during free agency in 2018, after playing just one year on his new deal. With a new head coach taking over the team, and a new defensive scheme being implemented, Hankins was no longer the hot commodity that he was just a year prior. Since his release, Hankins hasn’t really drummed up the same kind of interest that he did during last year’s offseason.

Why isn’t Hankins as highly sought after in 2018?

Part of the concern with signing Hankins last offseason was his price tag. Originally asking for more than $10 million per year, the DT settled for just shy of that when he signed with the Colts. Just a year later, his asking price is just a little lower, around $8 million per season. That’s still a hefty cost for someone who finished the 2015 season on IR and has battled injuries throughout his career.

Since his release, he’s taken a visit with the New York Jets, but some argue that isn’t a good scheme fit for Hankins and isn’t a likely destination for the Buckeye. Some teams that would provide a better schematic landing have already brought in guys, lessening their need for a big-money player — like the Tennessee Titans, who signed Bennie Logan on Monday.

The Colts certainly didn’t do Hankins any favors either, releasing him a couple days after the opening of free agency. Teams didn’t know he’d be available and some had already moved forward with signing other high-demand players. Once cap space becomes a concern, teams start tightening their wallets, meaning a tougher time for Hankins as he looks for a new roster spot.

The Buckeye has met with Washington as well, but is rumored to want a multi-year deal, which the NFC East team may not be willing to offer. There’s also been some buzz that the Detroit Lions could be an interesting landing spot for the lineman.

Chris Holtmann is keeping one of the top targets in-state.

The Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team just received the biggest commitment of the young Chris Holtmann-era, as Ohio’s top-rated player Alonzo Gaffney has officially decided to stay in-state for his collegiate career.

— (@alonzo_gaffney) April 10, 2018

The physically imposing 6’9 power forward is currently wrapping up his junior year at Cleveland’s Garfield Heights High School. 247 Sports has him as the 18th best player in the 2019 class, and the third-best power forward nationally.

Before choosing to stay at home with the Buckeyes, he had offers from Michigan State, North Carolina, Louisville, Georgetown, Kansas, and many others.

Gaffney is a long wing, with a fantastic ability to get to the rim and score. His size also allows him to be a lockdown defender, making him a valuable addition to the roster on both ends of the floor.

Weighing in at just 190 pounds, he has some room to bulk up, and he will want to continue working on his outside shot in order to round out his game, but this is a major addition to the OSU program.

With the recent commitment of Florida State transfer, CJ Walker, Holtmann is well on his way to remaking the Ohio State roster to fit his vision of the program.
