Kelsey Mitchell and Stephanie Mavunga will stay teammates as they make their way to the pros.

It doesn’t happen all that often, but when it does, it’s usually something special. Back in 2016, Joey Bosa and Joshua Perry were drafted by the same NFL team, and now in 2018, Kelsey Mitchell and Stephanie Mavunga were both picked by the Indiana Fever in Thursday’s 2018 WNBA Draft.

Being able to make the transition to the next level, but still have someone you know by your side, is bound to make the move a bit easier. You have a built in roommate, someone who already knows your tendencies on the court, and an added layer of support during this life-changing process.

Mitchell was the Fever’s first-round pick, and the No. 2 overall prospect drafted, to the surprise of no one. It was pretty clear that South Carolina’s A’Ja Jackson would go first overall, but Mitchell was right behind her — a scoring machine who could add value to any team’s offense. When the first Buckeye was picked, Mavunga actually tweeted her support, welcoming Mitchell to her hometown — little did she know, she would be next.

Welcome to my hometown shortyyy . Ready to see you do great things on the next level . Happy for you ! ❤️ @Kelz_Hoop https://t.co/QTnaPkLk9Z

— Princess StephMav  (@SMavunga_23) April 12, 2018

Exactly one round later, the Indiana Fever added another Buckeye to their roster, and named Mavunga as their pick. Dubbed a double-double monster, Mavunga and Mitchell put on a clinic during the 2018 Big Ten Tournament, not only winning the overall title, but walking away with individual honors and First-Team designations.

Now, as they make the move to the WNBA, the duo that led the Buckeyes to a 28-7 season and a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, will continue their offensive assault at the professional level.

Mitchell will go down as one of the best collegiate players of all time (male or female), claiming 3,402 career points and having made more three pointers (497) than any other female in NCAA history. She finished her senior campaign with her fourth All-America honor — Ohio State’s first-ever player to do so — and took home the Dawn Staley Award, an honor given to the country’s top guard.

If record-setting players were what the Fever were after, they got it in spades between Mitchell and Mavunga. Mavunga finished her senior season averaging 16.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, making her the third Buckeye ever to average a double-double for an entire season -- better yet, this was her second season in a row averaging the feat. She may not have put up the type of points Mitchell has, but Mavunga is one of seven players to put up more than 1,700 points, 1,200 rebounds and 300 blocks in a career, and she also set an OSU single-season record with 385 rebounds in 2018.

Between Mitchel and Mavunga, they will give the Indiana Fever a chance to bounce back from their 9-25 record last season, in which they had the second worst offense in the league.

There are a handful of reasons that these picks were special. For the Ohio State women’s basketball program, it marked the first time in history that two players were picked in the same draft class, with Mitchell’s No. 2 overall pick tying for the highest Buckeye taken. For Mavunga, the Brownsburg, Ind. native will be playing a mere 20 minutes from where she grew up, and will also join her sister-in-law, Jeanette Pohlen-Mavunga, on the Fever roster.

If chemistry alone were enough to win championships, I’d go ahead and bet all my money on the Fever making a big postseason push at the end of the 2018-19 season.

The Buckeyes are hoping the spring game stirs the commitment pot.

It’s been quite the week for the Ohio State Buckeyes football program. Shoot, this week has even been huge for Ohio State’s basketball team as well—landing a top target, in-state five-star.

But back to football. With spring practice still at full go, there has been little down time. Not to mention, there’s been some pretty sweet ceremonies taking place at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center as 2017 Big Ten Championship rings have been delivered and yesterday’s special occasion of gold pants being dropped off to players as well. A perfect lead up to the annual spring game tomorrow, Ohio State is looking to not only impress the fans with their play and accolades, but the many recruits that plan to visit campus both officially and unofficially for Saturday’s scrimmage. While we sit and anxiously await the confirmation that the the spring game is still on, there could be good news in the air defeating any weather that heads toward Columbus if one of those top recruits on campus leaves as a Buckeye commit.

We’re still good, right?

Almost each and every recruiting cycle under Urban Meyer—as Buckeye head coach—we have seen at least one pledge from a St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) player. Off the top of everyone’s mind, you can certainly think of the Bosa brothers, but even besides those two there has been more to come north and suit up for Ohio State. A pipeline for the Buckeyes, this Florida (and national) powerhouse has been nothing short of amazing for Buckeye football recruiting—and this year is hoping to be no different. Safety prospect Jordan Battle is the one that comes to mind most when considering this year’s Aquinas “must have” prospect.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder can do it all in the secondary. Whether it’s in pass coverage or in run defense, Battle is a guy Ohio State and many others would obviously love to add to the fold in their 2019 class. Currently pegged as the No. 30 safety in the class, any evaluation— whether from coaches or scouts—has proved what Ohio State already knows: Battle can flat out play.

Where things get a little tricky, however, is this weekend.

STA Top247 S Jordan Battle no longer taking an official to Ohio State this weekend. There’s a chance he ends up at Miami’s spring game.

— Andrew Ivins (@Andrew_Ivins) April 12, 2018

Battle was slated to officially visit the Buckeyes this weekend for the spring game, and there’s thought that he may have even been on commitment watch while in Columbus. However, yesterday evening, news leaked that Battle would in fact not be coming to Ohio State after all. Instead, there’s rumors that he could be visiting Miami in place of the Buckeye visit. Before we get too worked up, there’s a few items to keep in mind.

The weather this weekend for the spring game may end in the result of a cancellation. With these early official visits, it would be a real shame for Battle to come all this way just to see a cancelled game. In fact, his change of plans may have been the result of a Ohio State staff suggestion. Secondly, he’s still a Buckeye target that remains nothing but sky-high on Ohio State. In fact, most in the recruiting scene have Battle pegged to OSU.

A crowded top group

While the Buckeyes are able to recruit nationally just as well as anyone in the country, there’s still a major priority to keep tabs on the best in-state kids. Keeping the borders locked up around the state from poaching programs is something Meyer and staff have said they’d like to do better. Well, 2019 provides that opportunity to put their money where their mouth is. One target they’d really like to keep home is Mentor, Ohio, native Noah Potter. The country’s 18th best defensive end and Ohio’s eighth best player has deep Ohio State ties— and one’s pretty obvious as his older brother, Micah, is a player on the Ohio State basketball roster.

A talented family to say the least, the younger Potter brother is also thought to easily be considered a Buckeye “lock” if there is such thing. A commitment timetable hasn’t been really something of discussion with Noah, but when you’re an in-state prospect, there’s always reason to believe a pledge in favor of the Bucks could come at any time. Yesterday though, in somewhat of a interesting article with Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.com, Potter was quoted as saying both Wisconsin and Florida have made their way into his top group of schools joining Penn State and, of course, Ohio State.

Now, while we don’t want to take anything away from Noah, and it’s true that his interest in those programs is there considering his words, but still, Ohio State is clearly the leader in everyone’s mind and most likely Noah’s as well. Again, respecting his interest in those schools may just be a formality, but Meyer, the coaching staff, and Buckeye Nation in general would be shocked if Potter went anywhere besides Ohio State to further his academic and athletic careers. A commitment is always a possibility and until then, guarantee this coaching staff will be doing all they can to secure it.

BP Home Brews

Am I missing something, or do we really not have a Home Brew thread here? If I missed it through my search, please feel free to merge.

Anyhow... Anyone do the home brew thing? It's be a long while since I've brewed. Got the itch to do so again a couple of months ago. Turns out that we're going to host a home brew party this weekend. Expect to get to fermentation on four batches.

Converted the four recipes from grain to extract as we'd never get through four batches in a day with grain. Of the four batches, we're popping two cherries, so going extract / partial mash will be helpful in bringing them along.

On tap, as it were, for the day are:
Blood Orange Gose
American Pale Ale
English Ale
Peanut Butter Brown Ale

The last one sounds very interesting. The guy who chose that recipe has had a Peanut Butter brown before and said it was really good. I'm going to hold judgment until I taste it.

The English Ale will be bottle conditioned. The rest we're going to keg. We'll force carbonate the Gose and American PA with CO2 and we're kicking around the idea of carbonating the Peanut Butter Brown with beer gas. I've got spare cylinders of both so we'll figure it out while the fermentation is happening.

So, anyone else brew? Love to hear what you've done / what you're up to.

One of the most well-rounded players in college basketball, Harper was considered a late third-round pick, but it didn’t pan out.

Despite being considered a late third-round pick for the 2018 WNBA Draft, former Ohio State guard Linnae Harper went undrafted on Thursday night. After playing her first two seasons of collegiate basketball at the University of Kentucky, Harper became an invaluable part of the Buckeyes’ success during her junior and senior seasons.

Having already been named to the SEC All-Defensive team, in her first season in Columbus, Harper was selected as the Big Ten’s Sixth Player of the year as a junior, and was a B1G All-Defensive Team and Second-Team All-Conference selection as a senior.

Why Linnae Harper should have been drafted

In her final season in Columbus, Harper averaged 14.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game (both of which were career highs), while shooting 46.7 percent from the field. The 5’8 Chicago native finished fourth in the Big Ten during her senior season with 13 double-doubles.

To put in perspective just how well-rounded of a player Harper is, in the 2017-18 campaign, she was one of only three players in the country to average more than 14.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game.

Clearly, someone will be getting a player that can contribute to their team in a number of impactful ways — but first, Harper will need an opportunity to extend her basketball career.

The Buckeyes’ double-double machine is ready to take her game to the next level.

Tonight, the Indiana Fever took former Ohio State forward Stephanie Mavunga in the second round of the 2018 WNBA Draft. Mavunga joins her Buckeye teammate Kelsey Mitchell, who was the first-round pick for Indiana earlier in the night. (These two together at the next level will be a game-changer for the Fever.)

The 6’3 native of Brownsburg, Ind. began her career as a member of the North Carolina Tar Heels, before transferring to OSU for her final two seasons. In all, Mavunga earned three all-conference honors— one in the ACC and two in the Big Ten—, including a first-team selection in both leagues.

In her final collegiate season, Mavunga finished third in the B1G in rebounds with 11 per game. Coupled with her 16.6 points per contest, Mavunga averaged a double-double for each of her two seasons as a Buckeye.

Her 19 double-doubles were second most in the Big Ten, and ninth-best nationally in 2017-18.

Why fans should be excited about Stephanie Mavunga

An academic All-Big Ten selection, Mavunga brings a toughness to the court that should be valuable on both ends of the floor in the WNBA. In addition to her impressive block total, Mavunga also finished third in the conference with 2.5 blocks per game last year.

As if her inside dominance wasn’t enough, Mavunga is also able to create her own shots, capitalizing on her size and athleticism. Her prowess on the block led her to a 63.2 shooting percentage during her senior campaign, the eighth-highest mark in the country.

Congratulations to Mavunga, and count everyone at LGHL new Fever fans.

One of OSU and the NCAA’s best basketball players of all-time is ready to take her game to the next level.

In Thursday’s WNBA Draft, the Indiana Fever used the night’s second overall selection to take one of the most decorated players in NCAA history, Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell. The 5’8 guard leaves Columbus with 29 OSU, Big Ten, and NCAA records, and sits as the second-highest scoring player in the history of women’s Division I basketball with a mind-blowing 3,402 points.

The three-time Big Ten Player of the Year, and the program’s only four-time All-American, contemplated entering the draft following her junior season, but now she will be asked to contribute to the team with the second-worst offense in the WNBA last year.

The Fever will tip off their season on May 19, as they host the Chicago Sky.

Why Kelsey Mitchell is a first round pick

In her senior season, Mitchell led the Buckeyes with 24.3 points per game, second only to Iowa’s Megan Gustafson in the B1G; the total was also good for third nationally. Mitchell also led the Buckeyes wth 4.2 assists per outing.

The top-guard prospect in this year’s draft class, Mitchell is also a scoring machine from behind the arc. During the Buckeyes’ NCAA Tournament run — despite being knocked out in the Round of 32 — the guard made 6-of-16 three-point attempts, capping off a career record of 91 straight games with a three.

“She made 40 percent of her 9.1 three-point attempts per game, which is otherworldly. In four seasons, she’s never attempted less than 8.8 attempts or shot worse than 37 percent. She’s the perfect guard fit for a changing WNBA that’s valuing shots from range more than ever.” — Matt Ellentuck, SB Nation

The Buckeye really does it all, and has the talent to succeed at the next level.

As Mitchell arrived at the Draft at Nike Headquarters in New York City on Thursday afternoon, she thanked Buckeye fans for supporting her throughout her career, and wished the best of luck to her teammates also hoping to hear their names called.

The Buckeyes and the Bison will meet later this year for the first time since 1986.

Ohio State will host Bucknell as part of its 2018-19 non-conference schedule, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 12, 2018

Ohio State’s 2018-19 non-conference schedule continues to take shape, as it was announced Thursday that the Buckeyes will be taking on Bucknell from the Patriot League. The Bison join Cincinnati, UCLA, and Youngstown State as opponents in Ohio State’s non-conference portion of their 2018-19 season. The matchup against Cincinnati in “The Queen City” will kick off Ohio State’s season this fall, while the contest against UCLA will be a part of the CBS Sports Classic in Chicago in December.

Bucknell finished the 2017-18 season 25-10, winning both the Patriot League regular season title and the conference tournament. Bucknell gave Michigan State all they could handle in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, with the Spartans squeaking out a 82-78 win. The Bison finished the year ranked 97th in KenPom rankings, but Bucknell will lose their three leading scorers.

The upcoming contest will mark just the second time Ohio State and Bucknell have squared off. The last meeting between the teams came in 1986, which Ohio State easily won 90-62. Ohio State last faced a Patriot League squad in the 2016-17, when the Buckeyes opened the season with a 78-68 win over Navy.

“A lot of things I won’t share with everyone else, what’s going on in-house, but I’ve been in worse situations where you don’t have one. So we’ve got to do right by the team and do right by the players.”

-Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer via Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group

There has only been one other instance during his time with Ohio State that Urban Meyer has had a decision to make at quarterback, and if this year is anything like 2015, don’t expect an answer on who will be starting for the Buckeyes anytime soon. In Saturday’s Spring Game, Meyer will get a chance to take one last look at Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, and Tate Martell before spring practice wraps up.

Meyer also had to choose between three quarterbacks back in 2015, a decision that was made a little easier when Braxton Miller announced he was moving to receiver. Unlike 2015, Meyer won’t have to decided between J.T. Barrett, who put Ohio State in position to make the College Football Playoff, and Cardale Jones, who took over for an injured Barrett and helped the Buckeyes secure the title.

The biggest question coming out of the Spring Game is what Ohio State is going to do with Joe Burrow. While Burrow is in the mix for the starting job, if it is evident he won’t be Ohio State’s next starting quarterback, Meyer has to decide whether to let Burrow know, so the quarterback can explore a possible graduate transfer.

Even with the urgency Burrow might feel to find out what his future might hold, Meyer is likely to keep things close to the vest. Dwayne Haskins is the favorite for the job, but it would help the Buckeyes to keep Burrow on the roster as insurance in case Haskins doesn’t perform as expected. Just be ready for a summer full of speculation about the quarterback position, as Saturday likely won’t provide a clear answer on how Ohio State is leaning.

“We focus on the now, we don’t focus on the future. As a mom, I would love to see Nick win a national championship because his brother got one. I want for him so bad. It was such an amazing experience for Joey. For Nick to have that, it would be my dream come true.”

-Cheryl Bosa, mother of Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa via Brad Crawford, Bucknuts

While it won’t be a big surprise if Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa declares for the NFL Draft after the 2018 season, his mother says it is too early to start talking about the draft, as there are still things her son has to accomplish in Columbus. The biggest prize still left for the talented pass rusher to win is a national title. Nick’s older brother Joey was a part of Ohio State’s 2014 title team, and their mother is hoping Nick can win his own CFP Championship.

Nick Bosa has already shown plenty of physical talent on the field to boost his draft stock, but what has been impressing defensive line coach Larry Johnson is Bosa’s leadership skills. Bosa has been leading by example, which has helped young talents like Chase Young and Jonathan Cooper steer clear of developing bad habits. Bosa is also setting the bar high for those around them, making his teammates step up their game.

Bosa will have even more time to shine this year, with a number of Buckeye defensive linemen from last year’s team having moved on to the pros. Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, and Jalyn Holmes are all waiting to hear their name called later this month at the NFL Draft. It won’t be a big surprise if next year at this time Bosa is readying himself to hear his name called much like his trio of former teammates are this year.

There is only one Buckeye competing for the 2018 Stanley Cup, and he’ll take the ice for Game 1 on Thursday.

Coming off statistically the worst season of his career, Ohio State Hockey alum Ryan Kesler is looking to turn it up at the right time for his Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks take on the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the 2018 NHL playoffs, with their first matchup set for Thursday, Apr. 12 at 10:30 p.m. ET (USA | Stream) in Anaheim.

Kesler, a 6’2 center, is coming off an off-season hip surgery that has sidelined and hampered him for part of the year. This comes after last season, when he reached his second All-Star game and was a finalist for the Selke Trophy as the best defensive-forward in the NHL. He clearly has the skills to succeed and lead his Ducks far in the playoffs, and just has to rediscover his game after the rocky regular season.

Kesler starred for Ohio State in 2002-2003 where he amassed 31 points for the season and was subsequently drafted No. 23 in the first round of the NHL draft by the Vancouver Canucks — the only current NHL Buckeye to be drafted in Round 1. Since his time as a Buckeye, Kesler has won a silver Olympic medal, been to 2 NHL All-Star games, won the U20 World Junior Cup Gold Medal, and in 2011 won the Selke Trophy.

The Livonia, MI native was a very consistent producer for Vancouver and for the past 4 seasons in Anaheim. On top of his production, he has been an assistant captain for both teams. At age 33 it’s unclear how much longer he has in the league, but one thing is for certain, he will go down as one of the best Buckeyes to play in the NHL.

The Buckeyes’ Kelsey Mitchell is a first-round lock, but Stephanie Mavunga might slide in there too.

The 2018 WNBA Draft will get underway on Thursday, April 12, with the first round starting at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2), followed by the second and third rounds at 8 p.m. ET (ESPNU). In their inaugural season, the Las Vegas Aces won the draft lottery for the first overall pick, followed by the Indiana Fever (No. 2) and the Chicago Sky (Nos. 3 and 4).

Ohio State finished a few rounds shy of their quest for a “home-court” Final Four trip, but the team did finish the 2017-18 as the Big Ten Tournament Champions and with a long list of records and honors among the group of talented women. Now, with the NCAA Tournament in the rearview, a couple of Buckeyes are finally making their way to play in the pros.

Expected to be one of the first players taken, although not expected to be the overall No. 1 pick, Kelsey Mitchell is among the elite prospects in this year’s draft class.

Mitchell could have made the move to the WNBA last season, but decided to return to play for the Buckeyes for her senior campaign. She didn’t reach her ultimate goal of an NCAA Championship, but did set an astounding 29 school, Big Ten, and national records (men’s and women’s) with her extra season in Columbus. (The full list of records she holds is absolutely incredible, and is definitely worth a glance.)

Mitchell isn’t the only Buckeye to get some first-round consideration with teammate Stephanie Mavunga drawing interest from team’s as well. The 6-foot-3 forward was a First Team All-Big Ten player for her performance during the 2017-18 season, which included averaging a double-double for the second straight year, with 16.6 points and 11.0 rebounds. She also was named a semifinalist for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year award.

Another Ohio State player who could hear her name called on Thursday (granted not likely during the first round) is 5-foot-7 guard Asia Doss. The Buckeye set several new career-bests during her senior season in Columbus, including 5-of-10 3-pointers made against Louisville, eight assists in the game against FGCU, and seven steals against Nebraska. Doss was a starter in all but five of the games played last season, and notched the third-most minutes played on the team.

While Mitchell being a first-round pick is a virtual lock, Mavunga sneaking into Round 1 would be a cool moment for the Buckeye and Ohio State women’s basketball as a whole. All three of the Buckeye prospects have the talent to go on and succeed at the next level, so everyone at LGHL wishes them luck.

Let’s preview the Spring Game, shall we?

As of right now, Ohio State’s Spring Game is still on for Saturday. Incoming weather might change that, but in the event that it doesn’t, there are some intriguing storylines that are going to play out as the Buckeyes take to Ohio Stadium for the first time in 2018.

The main one (obviously): Quarterback.

Urban Meyer recently said that none of Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, or Tate Martell has yet to separate from the pack, adding a different layer of intrigue to a position that had more or less been on lock the last two seasons with J.T. Barrett. Is he telling the truth, though?

On this episode of the Hangout in the Holyland, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn break down why they think Meyer’s playing coy about his QB situation, and what it means for the Spring Game. They also preview the game itself, and everything you need to be on the lookout for, including:

  • Who steps up at the available positions on the offensive line, and how the differences between Barrett and Haskins will affect them.
  • Picking who this year’s Michael Thomas (aka Spring Game Player of the Year) will be.
  • Uncertainty at tight end, and waiting for Jeremy Ruckert to get on campus.
  • What Tuf Borland’s injury means for the middle linebackers, and why this might be Justin Hilliard ’s last chance to make an impact.
  • Roles for Demario McCall, Keandre Jones, Shaun Wade, and more!

The guys also discuss why C.J. Walker’s commitment to the basketball team is a big deal, and the hilarious Herm Edwards saga at Arizona State.
